This video is so fantastic, I can't begin to tell you how informative it is for someone who's trying to bring a product to market and is going round in circles looking at sheet acrylics and spacers. Thank you for taking the time to make it.
Happy to help! Glad you liked it. You can upload your part for free, get a free quote and get advice from our sales engineers. They can tell you exactly what you need. No need to go round in circles ;) www.hubs.com
I read a while ago that someone made bushes for his 3d printer from UHMWPE, wich is much cheaper than teflon, and he was extremely happy with the result. Vesconite is a plastic developed in South Africa in 1958 and has very high weight bearing and low friction properties, Delrin is a Polyoxymethylene that was developed much later.
Thank you so much for putting this together. For a while I was only considering metal materials for a design I'm working on and then realized there's gotta be better, lighter plastic alternatives and needed a breakdown just like this to supplement my research. So thank you!!
Thanks or your video which is informative and clear. I want to select among pom ,peek, Teflon. The part is immersed in 70c of water for a long time and it contact with a rotating shift. The part will be injection molding. Could accept tolerance +/-0.1mm. It is a rectangular in shape ,will be inserted to core for 2nd molding. Mold temperature 130c. Plastic which cover onto the part meld temperature is 320c.
Changzhou Yongbang Plastic Industry Co., Ltd is headquartered in China. We mainly provides the production and processing of PEEK rods, boards, pipes , Plastic Bushings and seals. We have a large stock for a long time. The price is low and the delivery time is short. We look forward to your cooperation. Thank you.
Thanks for the tips... I live in Brazil and I would like a tip, thanks which polymer among these or even uhmw w Teflon if I scrape on the asphalt will resist the most without wasting money, which has the greatest resistance to abrasion... For me this information is very important. Obrigado
Hey! thanks for your question. ABS is commonly used for electronics enclosure, as it’s relatively easy to work with material that has good mechanical properties for regular applications. ABS/PC mixes are sometimes used in Injection Molding as they have better properties, sometimes even with an addition of flame retardant depending on the application, but that’s generally for much higher quantities. We see an increasing number of people using PEEK for electronics casings for similar parts right from the start if they work only in CNC and low volumes, yet still, want excellent temperature and mechanical properties. Hope that helps!

this was an excellent video, thank you for creating it. Which if the materials would be the closest in characteristics to 6061 aluminum (aircraft grade)? I was thinking of rifle stocks as a target application hence it should be stiff and non-brittle and not contract / expand within a reasonable band of temperatures (say -30 to +50 Celsius)
Delrin would work but it's soft. It will scratch easily. It's also pretty heavy but that probably doesn't matter. It's slippery too so you should probably machine a hatch pattern into it.
Very nice video. The conclusion at the end is awesome. For these plastic material, can we say that CNC and 3D printing are for prototype and the injection molding is for mass production?
If only Delrin wouldn't be such a chemical resistant material it would be my immediate choice for my scale model projects but you can neither ( practically ) glue or paint it so yea... Mechanical parts use only ;(

In future episodes: Trying to figure out why our scanner isn't working.
Thanks for the video, some great info!

how the fuck does such a good video dont have decent number of likes.!!
amazing explanation.
You'd need a thot in the thumbnail for that
What would you typically use for an electronics enclosure? Like, let's say an industrial controller shell.

Can all of these materials be painted?

Yes you could say that but CNC machining is used for very large production runs obviously.
can Carbon fiber part replace by POM material,

what about hpde and uhmw plastics for cnc machining?
Is there a way I could get the ABS surface finish ruler?
Ha, that's just a little gimmick we have at the office. So, unfortunately not but we appreciate your interest :)
Is peak food grade?
