- A comparison between the Novation Circuit Rhythm and Akai MPC One. They're two very different standalone samplers / grooveboxes, and that's exactly why I figured it would be helpful to compare them.

IMPORTANT: I filmed this before the MPC 2.10 update got released, so they've now added even more ways to shape sounds and *multiple* new synth plugins. It might be a bit before I can carve out the time to properly cover the update, but I'm really excited about it.
We'll be waiting for your 2.10 update review 🙌😁
mpc's are now also compatible with class compliant audio interfaces. expanding your i/o up to 32 ins/outs
Thanks for talking about drawbacks for low vision people. Most folks don't even think about how the disabled would use these devices.
I’ve tried maschine mk2, mpc live, touch, one, 1000,500, 2000xl, sp404, sp404sx, sp202, digitakt, op-1, circuit, circuit tracks, and rhythm. I don’t own all of those now just the notations and op-1. I might sell the tracks or original circuit. The circuits are fantastic because they are portable and easy to learn. I realized that learning my daw was a better option than learning a mpc. The op-1 is so portable it’s ridiculous. Digitakt is fantastic in its simplicity and simultaneous depth. It only suffers because of the buttons and lack of battery power. All the Mpcs are complex and capable machines but they require a lot of time. I spend my time learning my daw when I’m in the studio. In my living room I use a circuit. On a trip or at the park I use the op-1. It’s nice to focus on making music rather than learning the equipment
The Circuits are wonderful gateway devices. I'm forever thankful to Novation for creating such thoughtful workflows and helping me get into this stuff.
Maschine user. This MPC One has morphed into a MONSTER. That update leveled the playing field. The Novation has always been something I’ve flirted with but it’s limitations have always held me back from a purchase. The portability is what draws me. It’s definitely up next just need to touch it first. Great vid per usual 😎✊🏾
I appreciate this a lot, I’ve narrowed it down to these two choices , and your video helped me a lot. Killing it, Mr Miller!
Before buying my MPC, I remember reading that it only had 8 Audio Tracks, and I like to record guitars and vocals in my tracks...But with the way the MPC is, and how I only tend to record guitar, vocal, etc parts in like 4 or 8 bars at a time, maybe 16 at the most.. the amount of tracks is virtually unlimited for me. I haven't even recorded in the area for the 8 audio tracks. Recording with the Looper and assigning them to pads is not only easy, but even breeds more creativity with manipulation opportunities.
got myself an mpc live 2 still preordered rhythm for switching workflow from time to time
thanks for content!
waiting for more rhythm videos
Much appreciated! Helped my decision making process. 😊
Great video Gabe! I appreciate this. I've been in the MPC world for a long time and it's pretty incredible as far as functionality, can't really beat it but the way you describe the the workflow on the circuit really sounds amazing! Looking forward to getting mine soon.
Thanks for the video! It would be awesome to see a video about live performance on the MPC One!
At first glance the Novation Circuit is ticking all the boxes!
"Welcome to Ba...."
Team Circuit!! I do see myself getting an MPC one, but for now I’m happy with my tracks and rhythm. Best song writing tools on the market.
I think its crazy so few devices (or softwares!) support performance (live) slicing. Btw. I got mpc last week also because of your first video. I was avoiding it because i didnt want to work with a screen but ur first video showed u can do alot with buttons. It might be the best device for me after all, having tried some others. So far im really liking it and it fits the way my brain works.
Greetings, thank for for all the very informative videos, it’s bee a lot of help.
I’m new to stand-alone gear and after researching for a month or more, ams still confused with all the options.
What I am looking for:
1. Stand-alone, do not ever need a computer (I only have and use iPad, I do use garage band and another mastering app)
2. Minimal and simplistic foot print.
3. No screen preference but not deal breaker.
4. Ability to live sample into a live song creation using bass guitar, and/or keys, and vinyl.
5. Ability to switch “scenes” at the press of a button.
6. Ability to connect MIDI keyboard
7. Some level of synth manipulations but not overly complex.
Stand alone that I’ve liked the sound of most in demos: Digitone, MPC one, some of the Roland 101 but some Roland also sounds a little….video game-like to me. Love the MPC hip hop style sounds but also like the more ambient type beats.
Notations are super tempting but I have not liked all of the sounds I’ve on them, some are really good though, like the more ambient electronic sounding stuff which is the direction I want to go next. I was thinking maybe the best solution is one of the notations combined with something else? Longer samples is pretty important so that I can record a 8-16 measure song form and then layer things, similar to a looper pedal only I would walk over and press a button and then play on my instrument. I wonder how the notation (either rhythm or tracks), would pair up with the Roland 101 for doing what I want.
Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the great videos!

Nice video, I find my original circuit is a nice compliment for the MPC. I won't be ditching my Novation voices. So, both great. Whatever feels good, do it.
As always, thanks for your videos! I have a question for you. If you had to pick one between the a new circuit tracks, and a used MPC One (considering the new update), as your only groovebox, which one would you pick?
Akai force 😂
You're pretty much on point here. MPC has so many things going on, it would be hard to fly around on it like you would the Circuit. The touchscreen doesn't really help either since you can't rely on muscle memory like you would buttons. Still, I love the MPC one and the recent updates are great, especially the drum program updates like drum effects, pitch envelope and randomisation pages.
Regarding live performance, I think the MPC is better at sequencing gear and finishing tracks. It would be hard to use it on it's own to do a full live set. I would say the mute tracks and mute groups, xy pad are great tools to do live sets with
An external midi controller mapped to mutes is a must for the MPC IMHO.
@@monsirto yeah i want to buy a midi controller. Just need to see whether settings can be saved or do i need to set it up each time
@@J-Hz Will all save once mapped out. Easy to do from The MPC. Heaps of you tube tutorials too. Have fun!
@@monsirto Which one would you recommend? Novation Launch control XL? Faderfox? I know i had a Behringer BCR2000 that i tried with my mpc one and it worked, but it was too big and wasn't bus powered so I sold it. I'm after something with a relatively small footprint
@@J-Hz The entry level Novation, Korg and Akai products are all good. There is a Korg Micro Mixer that gets very good reviews.
I love you. ❤️
Thumbs up! 👍
I have the circuit rhythm. For me cause I know the tracks this is ideal. With enough vsts and such its limitations doesn’t bother me. Also the sampling isn’t horribly bad. It kinda reminds me of how people would just collect sounds. That being said mpc one could be a future thing.
I think the reason people hate their DAWs is that they just cant be arsed to get off the sofa. As soon as someone markets the perfect sofa workstation with an integrated drinks holder, I'm there.
Excellent video as usual. Seems to me the closes thing to the Rhythm is The Digitakt. And as in the case of MPC one is twice the price. This may be blasphemy but I sure wish I had bought the MPC one instead of Digitakt, it just has so much more to offer and it doesn't take years to get updates.
MPC One would be dope if I wasn't heavily invested into the Maschine ecosystem. Thus I got a Rhythm for making beats on the go!
I unpacked my live2Retro today, after lying in the corner since July first and my first impression was.. “where have you been all the time?”
Update: 2.10 is driving me nuts, too many bugs. I am thinking of switching back to Maschine Plus.
Great video for people new to samplers. The Circuit is perfect at its price point and loads more fun than the MPC (to create full song length drum and bass tracks for instance) but if you want a studio in a box obviously the MPC (or super expensive Maschine Standalone) is the way to go. I'd say there's definite room for a more powerful/expensive Circuit sampler offering straight ahead time stretching, polyphony, and including a couple of the killer Circuit Tracks features such as the amazing scale functionality and polyphonic control of external sound sources. But let's face it the multitracker and sequencing on the MPC could have been loads more user-friendly. Maschine is just easier, but the price is just ridiculous. As a complete non-sequitur a Circuit-based multitrack recorder would also be amazing so I never have to deal with the Verselab or the like. Nothing beats the circuit workflow. It's super clever, super fast, and super musical. EDIT: oh yeah and that super circuit sampler would also need some sort of equivalente to the 16-levels thing which is just super musical and needed.
I think this was a good feature comparison video that gets into the technical side of what the devices are capable of. However, I feel it didn't quite touch on the philosophical differences and how that might influence your creative process.
What are you planning on doing with the device? Is the goal to replace a DAW, sketch out song ideas, perform live, or a combination of those things? Without having owned either of the two devices, I'd say that the MPC is geared more towards those who are looking to build complete songs outside of a computer DAW. It's much more capable and robust in that sense. The Circuit, on the other hand, seems more geared towards idea generation and quickly jamming out a new beat as quickly as possible, but where you're more likely to want to rebuild it from scratch in a DAW once you've got a solid song sketch laid out. I realize you can of course make a proper song on the Circuit too, but it just feels too limited compared to the MPC.
So basically, what part of the creative process are you looking to optimize with the hardware? If it's idea generation, I'd say go with something like the Circuit, or Digitakt or Model:Samples, depending on your budget. But if it's to intentionally step away from the computer for a much greater part of the song creation process, and you're less interested in in-the-moment improvisation, then the Akai MPC One seems to offer the best "DAW-less" bang for the buck than any of the competition out there today.
Ive now recieved my circuit rhythm and Im using like an mpc basically. Since ive never been really able to afford mpc's with a wife and 3 kids, I have always worked with limited gear and love the challenge of limited gear and making it do/ sound like something much more expensive. With tht being said, the rhythm is capable of full beats and im loving its compactness. I feel like I have ab mpc with the Rhythm for half the price!
@@bbailey0625 Thanks so Much for your input. I think l will stay with the Circuit Rhythm. Like you I had other responsibilities in family life. So now the year have pass me by. I could afford the MPC now but like you economically Circuit Rhythm makes Sense . Okay Bye🤔🤜🤛✌🏽🙏
@@homie4resh980 no prob!
@@bbailey0625 the mpc One is the price of 2 circuits...you could afford it. Be honest.
+ you feel like you have an mpc...but you dont. Not even close. AGAIN. Try to be Honest
I had the mpc one, but I could not figure out how to assign the sounds to different midi channels, it was very very frustrating so I returned it. I bought the circuit rhythm today, I hope that I don't have the same problem with it like I had the mpc..
love the 4:23 sound
hi I would like to buy deep and house sounds for my circuit tracks where I find them?
Thanks for mentioning the sight impairment for mpc
Im in that group and touch screens are j pain i.E. Keyboard for typing D:
I have a tracks and am likely getting a rhythm also. Ive debated getting an mpc, but i feel like at thst point, I'd just rather use my daw. The circuits are just so immediate and smooth to sequence.
The Mpc one does seem like an absolute beast tho
Hey Gabe, I'm a beginner who wants to make synthwave. What would be the best groovebox? Cheers
I'm not Gabe, but I recommend the mc101. It's got over a thousand built in Roland sounds many of which scream 80s retrowave and vaporwave, and it's very beginner friendly.
Where did you get the idea that using battery packs would Risk the health of the MPC? If its providin the right amount of wattage and correct voltage...then...why would it be a problem?
Now that you can get gently used MPC One live or regular for under $500, I am not sure if there is much to compare. Circuit is tempting if you have impared vision, but Novation needs to make a circuit pro or something for better quality sounds.
The circuits are easily portable rough and ready devices, ideal for sketching and good enough for semi improvised live sets.
But the MPC One gives you the features of a Circuit Tracks plus a Circuit Rhythm and much more, so it’s better value for money by a long way. A pity it doesn’t have the better Maschine workflow though. Maybe NI will surprise us with a “Maschine+ One” ? They must surely see the MPC One as a threat to their world…
Performance on mpc you forgot to show clips?
PLEASE make a video comparing MC-707 vs MPC One 🙏🏼 I have 707 + mpc1000 and I'm considering replacing both with MPC One/Live but I'm not sure if the workflow issues would be worth it.
It might be a while if I do decide to make one, but in the meantime, this video compares a bunch of more expensive grooveboxes, including those two:
ua-cam.com/video/5N-Kb5lu3GU/v-deo.html
Miss my Korg EMX 1. Nothing compares imo.
"VW Golf not quite as good as a Porsche 911" shocker. As unfair as it is to pit a consumer groovebox up against a professional workstation, you did a good and fair job explaining the key differences. I'd say that Korg's Electribe S2 is more in line with the price, workflow, feature set and capabilities of the Rhythm and the Rhythm comes off a lot better in that match-up.
Yeah the difference is the point! They're seemingly similar at a first glance, but super different once you dig into them, which is what I wanted to help people see. It's a great example of the general trend I've seen... More cost means more features but also more complexity.
Why the bias against the Maschine+ you call it a Monster compared to the MPC one? Its overall 3cm wider and 3cm deeper (thats roughly 1.2inch). Weight is about the same and heigt as well. Or did you call it a monster for it's capabilities ;-). I use the M+ on a powerbank most of the time and enjoy its portability very much.
No bias against it, I actually really enjoyed it when I had a unit on loan. I don't think it gives nearly as many features for the cost, but I still prefer the workflow.
slightly pointless to compare these two Gabe... rewind... you made your point:) as always!
I've been wanting something I can use to compose and finish songs on, not really something for live performance. So I've been looking at things like the MPC One, Akai Force, and Synthstrom Deluge. The Circuits look fun, but aren't really in the category I need. And the MPC seems awesome for sample / chop / drum purposes, but I'm not a huge fan of the pattern-based structure it uses with hard partitions between song sections. Am hoping for more of an Ableton-like "clips on a timeline" workflow. So that mostly narrows it down to Akai Force or Synthstrom Deluge. Maybe someday I'll actually get one. :P
Actually the Circuit workflow has been compared to Ableton's clips and is considered the hardware no-screen equivalent. But yeah for composing a full song the Circuits are not quite there due to memory and polyphony limitations yet (unless they make a Circuit multitracker which would just be awesome). You can make a drum and bass rhythm track and even sample some chords on the Circuit Tracks no problem though. Any sort of extended vocal track would eat up the memory. You could use one pack per song but you'd still be seriously pushing it and would have to seriously loop vocals. That 3 minutes is gonna go fast even for a song based on loops and samples.
Sounds like a Maschine Mk3 is what you’re looking for, if you don’t mind staying attached to a laptop. It’s what I use for composing and songwriting. Maschine+ is just too expensive and doesn’t have the same access to VSTs.
@@hvhvgitaar I guess I forgot to update the post, but I eventually got an Akai Force, and it's exactly what I was hoping for. I wanted something Ableton-like but standalone and Linux-friendly, and it's both. With a bit of light modding, it can run all sorts of custom stuff, like the midi remapper daemon I wrote a couple years ago for my notebook.
I'm still barely scratching the surface, but if you're curious how I'm doing with it, I've already got a couple Force-based songs up on my channel. The Falafel Song was what I made the day the Force arrived, and the most recent at the moment is Lazy River.
I'm loving the workflow, which is unusual in that it feels less like work and more like flow, so songs come together really quickly. Just record clips, maybe tweak them a bit, then play them into an arrangement... and voila, it's a song. Then I can do a quick render, and rsync the files to my computer over wifi.
The Circuit is a bit more immediate and wonderfully portable, but the MPC is just night and day more feature-packed, better sounding, and more capable of producing full songs rather than grooves. If the One had a battery it would be god tier.
Yeah I've thought about getting an MPC Live for the battery. I still might at some point. You can definitely make full songs on the Rhythm if you're willing to jam it out, but it's definitely more doable to make really polished stuff on the MPC.
@@GabeMillerMusic I ended up getting a used Live for $700 back in May because it was impossible to get the One in stores and they jacked up the price $100. Overall I'm happy, but its practically twice the size of the One and less portable despite the battery. Also it has open vents that seem really easy to get dirt and pollen in if used outside. Definitely not beach-ready!
XTpower XT20000QC3 and there you go.
@@va941 buyer beware. Like Gabe said in the vid, external batteries for the MPC One risk significantly reducing its life expectancy
@@sugarhigh4242 how so?...what does Gabe and youself base that on?...what does the mpc care where it is drawing its power from?
Which one is the newest mpc one or mpc +
The MPC One + is newer. It doesn't add that much, so if you get a good deal on the original MPC One, I'd say go for it.
I never got into the new MPCs so I can't speak to that. I primarily use a Digitakt. It's my favorite thing. And I had never used any Circuit before I got the Rhythm. But I can confirm that it's surprisingly intuitive, especially for something without a screen. It's also smaller and sturdier than I had assumed. I really like it so far. I think if I had to make a comparison, what it reminds me a lot of is the PO33, which I think is a great little sampler.
The best thing to compare the Circuit Rhythm to is the Roland SP 404 sx or a, (both are screen-less (ish with the SP 404) samplers )
Nah, I think the PO 33 is the better comparison but that might just be down to personal use. From where I'm sitting, the PO 33 has a more usable sequencer and can also handle samples in a slice mode or a keyboard mode. On the 404 you need to slice samples by putting pieces on different pads and you can't play samples chromatically or properly pitch them at all. The 404 can also sample in stereo and isn't limited to 220 seconds of total sample time like you are on the Circuit Rhythm. I guess both the 404 and the Rhythm can act as fx processors but the grid fx remind me more of the punch in fx...except as far as I know you can't sequence them. I have owned an SP 404. I own a Circuit Rhythm. I have my issues with it. But I prefer it to the 404. I think it's cool but not for me. I've also got a Digitakt which is another 8 track mono sampling drum machine. But what it reminds me of most is the PO 33.
Honestly guys save some extra cash and get the MPC one , the circuit is so underpowered for the money , you could get and old mpc 500 for way less and it’s more powerful and portable , the circuit has for me become hipster crap, I still own the OG circuit but I don’t use it for the sounds ,I use it as a sequencer for my semi modular synths , I paid 450.00 uk for my MPC one , sold a novation mininova and a few volcas to fund it , best music decision I’ve ever made, all my music is made on the MPC one now , check my channel for a lot of music created on the MPC one , it’s a no brainier , get the MPC one, don’t waste your money on the circuit unless you think it makes you look cool using it in a coffee shop ha ha
Vs?
It seems much easier to get results with circuit, whereas MPC needs fiddling to get to the final result.
Weird that you don't do comparrising against roland mv1
It's definitely something I thought about, but I had the MV-1 on loan and didn't have time to film anything before I had to send it back. The main thing, though, is just the fact that the Rhythm is newer and I wanted to try to cover as many aspects of it as possible while it's still fresh in people's minds.
Here are my super brief thoughts on the MV-1 vs the MPC though:
The MPC blow the MV-1 out of the water in terms of features (sampling, effects, and now it even has vocal processing). If you're going off of sheer power and flexibility, the MPC is the clear choice. The MV-1 is still a good device though, and would be a good option for someone who wants something more portable (it's MUCH lighter and possible to power via USB) and something with the Roland sound engine.
Ohhh-Its-the Clash Of The Titans! The King Of The Ring! The Showdown Of the Century! The---Ok maybe I will actually watch the video first :-) P.S. Don't forget about Der Maschine :-)
Argh-you're gonna need a bigger back pack. Because you gotta have the Microfreak. And both the Circuits. :-0
The Novation's summing to mono is a deal-breaker for me... Crying shame for both the Tracks and Rhythm...
Only the samples are summed to mono, patches on the Tracks are in stereo, and both Circuits have stereo outputs with stereo effects and panning.
Up next, the porch 911 turbo v.s the honda accord!!! really?
Come some from office after sitting in front of 2 PC monitors for 8 hours. Looks at MPC One. Heavy sigh. Naaah....
Yeah the MPC One is twice the price, but it's basically both a Tracks and a Rhythm....no?
Pretty much, just not nearly as portable, and some might not find it as hands on, depending on personal preference.
So are we s upposed to ignore the fact that One costs 2x as much here or?
I mentioned that a few times! The devices are super different despite a few similarities, which is exactly why I thought they'd be worth comparing. Hopefully this will help people see exactly what they can get if they spend more and whether that's worth it for them.
@@GabeMillerMusic I just opted out of a Legowelt edition Polyend Tracker (same price as a One and also has a screen)
I had reserved, to get the Rhythm instead and it was partly because of your videos/love of Circuits. ;) It should be here today!
I’ll add that it’s actually pretty easy to find the MPC One for less than retail if you’re willing to go used. I just picked one up nearly brand new for $550.
@@jaredforney2372 i refuse used after my last couple purchases turned me off from it (aids)
@@jaredforney2372 i also picked up a like new, used 3 times, one for $570. It's a beast and at times makes me question everything I'm doing with music. I love it though.
Yes get the circuit rhythm if your blind so you can learn it. Cuz it looks so confusing and I’m a pianist lol
This like comparing a skateboard against a BMW, the mpc beats the rhythm in every way, I have a rhythm and a mpc force and trying to figure out how fast i can sell the rhythm, If money is the problem buy and deal with the rhythm if you have the money on mpc
This is not a fair comparison. The circuit is mono with little sample time and lacking so many features. The Mpc is powerful, not the best workflow but it runs circles around the circuit. I do like the workflow of the circuit much better than the Mpc one.

The up talking…
I don't see a comparison. $399.99 for limited, no lcd or read out groove box, vs and actual pro level, touch screen, beast MPC ONE at just $659.00 ? You're not going to scrape up $260.00 more for an MPC ONE? Instead, waste $400.00 be limited with no real 'read out' data? I will never grasp the love of the Circuit boxes! That's a lot of money for what it is IMHO. You are so close to buying superior products. I skipped Novation on count it is a $199 to $299.00 product selling at $399.00. It's got a following for sure, but why? Not wasting money to find out. LOL.
