He's the most captivating storyteller I've ever heard. Even though I don't agree with what he done he's a legend in my mind the outlaw of deer hunters.
This guy needs to make an audio version of his book, and he needs to narrate it. He’s got an awesome voice, and he’s extremely good at telling his story.
agree 100%. My brother let me borrow the book and I just finished it.. This should be an audio book with his voice.. would be awesome.. great storyteller...
For all you guys that completely missed the whole concept of all Charlie’s stories here it is. We and he knew outlaw hunting wasn’t right, didn’t matter how hard you worked or who’s butt you kissed you were not getting an opportunity to hunt these ranches. These were cattle ranches that could care less about deer at or until the latter part of his outlaw career! Wether or not you choose to believe it or not, a bunch of the land “acquired” by these land owners was claim jumped and/or stolen originally. This guy killed around 75 deer in 22 yrs… That’s off of around 1/2 million acres of land! I have managed deer ranches and we killed 200 to 300 deer off of them in one season legally. I didn’t want poachers killing my deer either so I understand. Here’s my question to you…. Who was hunting, feeding, managing the deer he killed? No one was! He was damn good at what he did and basically only got caught because he wanted to. He was killing deer for his own gratification and wasn’t hurting no one. Believe this, if he would’ve been a mediocre outlaw hunter they would’ve shot his ass in one of them ranches and never told anyone. What if one of the land owners would’ve just invited him out to shoot a trophy??? I bet it woulda been much different outcome. Trophy deer hunting is a rich mans sport and always will be! I’ve worked for enough millionaires to know. Bunch of them consider them targets and nothing more! I’ve worked for guys that killed more than a dozen bucks over 160 inches and never ate a bite of deer meat! Does that make them right because they got money??? So y’all get off your high horse thinking you better than this guy. He is a legendary deer hunter and did it for the love of deer and nothing else. He coulda hunted a circle around you and me and we would’ve never known he was there! I didn’t say he was right I said he was a legendary deer hunter! Peace out!
@@chrishenicke2052 not bad at all. Well put. I was a Trooper in my state and worked a case on a couple of brothers that killed a lot of big bucks in my county. It’s pretty rich to make claims of the land owners as thieves themselves. You have no such proof. Yet, you float this claim as a defense for this criminal. What if it was your land he was trespassing on and killing game on? Oh, I see, you’re as pure as the wind driven snows. I’ve known many great hunters in my lifetime and not one them was a poacher. Furthermore, if a landowner doesn’t trust you to hunt their land then there’s probably a good reason for it. I’m positive that if you came to my ranch and asked for permission to hunt that, within a minute, I’d see right through your b.s. and tell you to leave. Thieves aren’t victims. Thieves aren’t justified. Thieves aren’t welcome. Sell your progressive, leftist, Marxist argument to some teenage girls in your neighborhood and don’t waste your breath on those of us who know how the world spins.

Great to see another podcast with Charlie. The man is a hunter. It's a shame that people bash this man, or anyone like him. I've listened to and watched every podcast that Charlie has done, multiple times. Simply cannot get enough of the man and his stories. Hunting is hunting, regardless of what wildlife agencies or lawmakers determine is 'legal' or not. At no time in human history did any of our ancestors care about the 'ethics' of hunting. Concern over time of year, time of day, quantity, or the methods used to take game was simply non-existent. Humans have always used any and all methods available to kill game. Driving entire herds off of cliffs or into pits wasn't frowned upon by the spear and club crowd. If early man had access to firearms or artificial light (they did hunt with the aid of torches, by the way) they certainly would have used them. Only recently (past couple of centuries or so) have people started to try and apply some sort of holier-than-thou philosophy to what has always been inherent to us. Don't try and fool yourself with the "they hunted for food" or "natural predators don't kill for sport" nonsense. There have been documented cases of numerous species of predators, globally, that partake in 'surplus killing'. A radio-collared male mountain lion was tracked by a game department and killed 26 deer over the course of 7 miles...in 12 days! He fed only on the first two. It is called INSTINCT. You cannot stop a predator from hunting. You cannot turn your back on your heritage. We are predators. We hunt. Some of us do it better than others. Some don't do it at all. Those that don't are the ones who are fooling themselves. Those are the ones who are 'wrong' or whatever other words people try and apply to this man, or those of us like him. There is nothing 'wrong' about killing game. There is nothing 'wrong' about doing it in places where game is abundant. What IS wrong is people feeling like they own the game on this planet, or even the land the game lives on. I'll let you in on a not so little secret: Nobody owns the game or the land. The game is native and you're just renting the land. Want to kill some game? Do it. Do it so as not to put another human life in danger, but other than that there's no rational reason not to. There are only obscure and ridiculous 'illegal' reasons not to. If you feel otherwise, that is sad and pitiful. A wolf will hunt. A sheep will be eaten. A sheep dog is irrelevant. INSTINCT. Hey Turkey, give me a call anytime. 👍
@@seankerrville2714 Man U ain’t kiddin when he was talkin about jumping in the cactus to hide from the two ranchers on horse back, just the way he talks about that, you can just tell that close call shook him up!! Always ask permission, you never know, I have about 7 acres of mostly hardwood, surrounded by a lot more woods and farmland, friends who live in Utah own the house they grew up in and about a 85 acre farm with a small irrigation pond, mabe 50 acres are for row crops. Both places are absolutely full of deer, I caretake the farm and have given permission to 3 people to hunt, one went mabe 4 times, other two never went, don't ask me. Gave permission to a guy that buys lead from me this year, he couldn't believe it, he went last weekend and shot two, said when the sun came up they looked like ants in the cotton fields.

I could listen to this man for hours and hours. He isn’t bragging and admits it’s wrong and he was just a deer hunting machine. I know guys like him as far as the passion and it’s crazy and you are born with it
For those who instantly judge this man maybe need to take a look at their self. We are all sinners and have done things in our life's that we look back and say "I should been better person" it's not our place to judge this man it's God that will have the final judgment on all our life's. Those are God's creatures and he will be judge one day just like we all will. Did he do wrong sure he did. But praise him for turning his life around to be a better person and not judging him for all his wrongs. Cause we all sin and all have done wrong.
@@williambray7876 no he should be judged and shunned from the hunting community, there’s a difference between accidentally killing a deer or even poaching a deer or two but poaching over 100 deer is not something we should forgive him for. Not to mention, majority of the deer he just cut the heads off and left, which is a lot worse than poaching a deer. He’s also not sorry, he may say he is but he’s lying, he’s laughing while telling his poaching stories, then he’s also trying to make money off him poaching by getting a book deal. It also gives fuel to the anti hunters when all these “hunters” support him and buy his book, you guys are making all us real outdoorsmen look bad.
How many other non military trained men do you know that can go out alone for 22 days with just a backpack. I would love to spend some Rea time with him.
He is spot on with his opinion of Ronnie Brooks the game warden. He once watched my dad shoot a buzzard from the road when he was a young man. He wrote a ticket and searched the truck. Dad had a little sack of smoke and Brooks poured it out and never said a word about it. On the other side of the spectrum there is wardens like Jim Lumberg, former Cooke county warden, that pulled us over when I was about 7 years old. Told me I would probably be a good kid if it weren’t for my last name. What peace officer tells a kid that??
I couldn’t agree more man!!! I was lucky enough to live around a game warden who did his job, but also treat people with respect, and give every hunter the benefit of a doubt…. He wouldn’t lie or treat every hunter he came across like a suspect like so many other games wardens I’ve came across… I mean seriously so many wardens today are just itching to write you a violation even for the smallest thing, instead of a warning, a little information, and a chance to correct it… But if you get caught again doing the same thing , it will not be good for you next time at all!!!! I really admire a good game warden when I come across one…. 9 times out of 10 people will reach out to a game warden like this than the warden who goes strictly by the book thinking he’s all that, and can do whatever he or she wants to because they have a badge and a little bit of power….

Great story telling! I understand totally. I started bow hunting in the late eighties in southern Illinois. Back then, not many people now hunted and we pretty much had free range on property. It was all legal but then more people started bow hunting and more people started leasing ground. Now I’m restricted to about 100 acres that I can hunt. And it’s not one parcel.
There was a man in Ohio that spent his time hunting poachers. True story. He finally got in trouble himself for a citizens arrest. He of course was not a deputy etc. He waited for a well known SUSPECTED poacher and he was. The problem….he allowed the man to come back to his truck which was his second trip…he came out looked around to make sure it was clear than went back for the two heads, nice bucks. When he came back and loaded them, this guy came out put a gun on him and said, you move and I’ll shoot you. He had a shot gun with buck shot in it. They did arrest the gentleman for illegal hunting and poaching and huge fines and jail time. They also arrested the poacher hunter for holding a gun on him and threatening to kill him. He said that he laid across the road from the guys truck for seven hours waiting on him to come out. He had helped arrest four different guys who were poachers over a 12 year period. He quit doing it after he got in trouble. They told him that it was illegal and that he was not a police officer and he could get killed. He said he already knew that and he spent two tours in Vietnam going after the enemy so he was well aware of the danger involved. He was a quiet guy I guess and he was retired and never bothered anybody but what happened was he had a big old bump on his own property that he fed for several years and thought he was beautiful and didn’t want him to be killed. The poacher killed the buck. He started hunting poachers.

116 deer on 440,000 acres equals 1 deer for every 3,793 acres. No big loss there. The real crime is having that much land and not allowing people to hunt.
@Brandon McClarnon You sure? Because look at the Top 3 Whitetail diseases with maps and explain that one. Don’t let your jealousy or lack of research cloud your comments. Larger land tracks enable better monitoring and control. Through QDM, culling, and oversight, the herd is much better managed. Just a basic review of what gets produced compared to public lands defeats that logic. It is not your fault, the forums are full of “facts” provided by lazies that spend time there instead of investing in what it takes.

My dad and my uncle Paddy, during the 60s,70s, 80s, and early 90s, poached an average 5 deer a year from estates throughout Scotland, constantly at odds with and being sought by the police, Ghillies, and Highland gamekeepers, their escapades only came to an end when my dad passed away in 1996, uncle Paddy continued poaching salmon in local rivers until his death in 98, but my cousin Ronnie continues his legacy and still poaches salmon today, may poachers never cease to keep gamekeepers on their toes.

Had two daughters. Killed some nice bucks over the years most with a bow. Biggest one is in the 120's probably. 25 years ago I would have been jealous of this guy. Great story teller. Great subject matter and persona that hunters, conservationists and poachers themselves need to hear and reckon with. Poaching is in large part a familial tradition passed down generationally and a way of life, at least where I am from. For many it is about basic sustenance and others about getting that elusive buck by any means or the thrill of being outside the law and social norms. East Texas antler restrictions have helped our trophy potential, but poachers still rob us ethical hunters of chances at incredible bucks. A long time friend's uncle followed buzzards to a carcass of an incredible buck they had on trail cameras in a few locations on their respective farms. It was an old buck and the horns look like battle clubs a caveman would've used in conflict. They are pretty confident that deer was shot by a known spotlighter in the neighborhood.
@Lucas Oldaker In East Texas - and I think many other states have taken on similar rules regarding bucks you can harvest - you can only shoot a spike, any buck with at least one side that does not have a branched antler or any buck with an inside spread 13" or greater - outside the ears is what we are told to go by in the field. In the counties I hunt, I can take two doe and two antlered bucks - but can only take one antlered buck with 13" or better. But here's the kicker. I can go over to the county next door and fill that second buck tag with a 13" or better...or the spike. It's supposed to be a way to increase age classes of deer, and it has worked to a large degree.....but doing it that way may not actually help a lot of good 2-year olds become really good 3-year-olds. We're definitely seeing better deer though after - I think - going on two decades of antler restrictions in those counties.
I had a friend that was a awesome hunter that hunted everything and he shot a monster with a bow and the deer lived. He hunted it hard and got another chance at him and he got him. All legally, and when he got it mounted, the taxidermist said he found buckshot inside the cape. He got inside a magazine for it.
He might have found buckshot in it. If he did, it could’ve been from a previous season from a different hunter. Or he could’ve lied because of jealousy, who knows
I love outlaw romance but at some point, when i began to realize he was just a headhunter and left the rest of the deer on the ground to go and get another head, the whole recount began to lose its luster for me.

@@tylerdesautels1857 then don't recognize him. I believe he does deserve recognition.
Peace out!
Well said sir

@@skylerspringsteen5730 so I guess your one of those people who has never done anything in your life that was wrong in your entire life.
@@williambray7876 no he should be judged and shunned from the hunting community, there’s a difference between accidentally killing a deer or even poaching a deer or two but poaching over 100 deer is not something we should forgive him for.

@Brandon McClarnon You sure? Because look at the Top 3 Whitetail diseases with maps and explain that one. Don’t let your jealousy or lack of research cloud your comments. I remember 25 years ago I wrote on a card that had different questions for some work place thing, the question was...What is your near life goal? My answer was kill a big deer. I got married. Had two daughters. Killed some nice bucks over the years most with a bow. Biggest one is in the 120's probably. 25 years ago I would have been jealous of this guy. I hear about all these big deer and it does nothing for me. I sit in my assassin stand about 600 yards in. I see some deer and fox squirrels. I get excited every time I hear one coming. He said he is ruined...He is. Because the old saying fishing ain't catching is true. It's the uncertainty that creates the moment. The pulse quicken. What's coming up behind me. Maybe it's that 100 inch buck I've been chasing. Sigh it's just a yearling.
Agree 100%. This guy had to break the rules to get big deer. Any hunter knows how hard it is to get ANY deer (without bait), while following the rules of the state. I’d rather not know what Im hunting than screw up my spots with 15 cameras.
Legend ,they don't make em like him anymore.
What an interesting guy. He put a lot of time in the bush imagine some of the big deer he seen and the thrill of hunting them.
He’s a poacher/thief.
Unbelievable
@@michaelshuey1614Why is it unbelievable? The world is full of criminals.
@@russelllangworthy8855 “Unbelievable” to me is not that there is a poacher or a thief among us, rather it’s the statement made by Donnie King to which I was commenting; the same comment which you’ve now misunderstood.
Charles is an absolute legend.
This is life adventure stuff any outdoor person would love to experience!
The buck he's talking about on the refuge was a sure enough 190" buck my dad and I watched that deer for 5 years before he disappeared. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some stories about hunting in whiskey flats.
Remember that 188 class buck with a double drop that hung out at ceillo flats,, on the back 40 trap,, by the wood wind mill ?? He,,seemed always holed up in a whitebrush thicket,,,,,It was a pasture they seldom hunted? The neighboring property tried to purchase that little parcel several times back in the 90s,,with no deal,,, I thought he arrowed that buck late in the season, and didn't find 🤣 the deer for over 1 week as it left little blood,,an died in a Mott of black brush,,28" spread, heavey bases and tines, missing left beam dog catchers,14,,points,a real MUY GRANDE!
@@seankerrville2714 whiskey flats or down by the lake where it went to the subdivision at lake worth?
This is very interesting....towards the end....he made me feel good about me and my hunting style...ive been fortunate to hunt some good property...lol..nothing compared to this.. Midwest farms...120-150 acres...but I'd sit all day..I can't tell ya how many times ...ive sat daylight till dark...dozens of times....id only hunt when the wind and time was right...and I have 21 LEGALLY killed bucks lol !!! Most are bow kills...
Awesome stories I’ll be ordering the book this week
I hear CHARLYS,,, got quite the fan following now and a few women who find his bad brush style attractive!!!,, a mass you tube sensation!!many people want to take up his (brand) of activity 😀 😉 😄 😜 🤔 😁 with just a wee amount of caution!!!
Guys don’t realize when he says he took some 180” bucks that’s true 180s !! To most they would say that buck is 200+ but he’s being honest about the scores ! He has taken 200” bucks with deductions 180s net ! The man has taken giants !
I love this guy and the way he did some of his things and how big the deer were it must have been a sight to see some of these deer coming in the way he did a lot of people couldn’t have ever got those deer to come in like that and people have think back then it wasn’t that big of a deal it was more cat and mouse games till somebody got caught and let me say atleast he was hunting these deer walking in stalking them down getting them within 20 yards to shoot them and trust me the meat didn’t tuber
I see huge deer all around Azle, Tx. I live just outside of town. 6 years now.
This guy is like my idol but it does suck how much trouble you can get into now a days
really really enjoyed this!
Listen to part one and part two, this guy is a great storyteller and had some unique experiences, but honestly I have probably more respect for the lawyer or doctor who’s a guy that sits by a feeder but doesn’t break the rules. As long as he isn’t this guys ex wife’s lawyer!
My highest respect for anyone in Texas during this time period that was getting record book bucks on public land. Especially with a bow!
There’s basically no public land in Texas, he did what every not rich hunter in Texas wants to do
Can Y'all have him show his Rattlin' Antlers? Or even some mounts? Think that'll be Great.
Just curious. How many people call b******* on this whole thing maybe it's true maybe it's not. Me personally I don't think so
Read the book it has pictures to prove the stories
Just, curious how many hunters should call bllsht on you! Your a traitorist enemy! F-OFF..

Love it and can relate to allot of his stories lol awesome stuff!!👏🏻
Oh, another poacher. You might want to admit that down at your local cafe instead of just sharing it with little ol’ us here on UA-cam.
@@michaelshuey1614 well aren’t you the touchy one 😂😂😂
@@michaelshuey1614You seem to have a chip on your shoulder.
Shot those deer out of airboats at night back in the day. Its legal to shoot those exotics at night on the tidelands.
How about the O'Connor Range from Refugio to Corpus Christi?
Where to buy his book?
Always entertaining! Good interview!
Here in Maine it’s hard to call a good buck in we just don’t have that many in one area
Have this issue on my own property and watch your deer all summer pattern it and somebody will drive by and shoot it while I'm at work about 6:00 to 10 days before season opens
Must be nice to have all that money,! 😕 and own,,,,, all that property,, that is,,until you get humbled down just before season by a skilled poacher and you find out that owning and having,,,,,,,,,don't allways guarantee payday!,lol

I get it, and agree, but not your deer
@@seankerrville2714 yeah and assholes like that is what make people set traps for ignorant people they don't care about laws or anything else and I don't have all the money I actually work I don't lie cheat and steal
@@charlessanders4586 waking up you my dear but it's mine that I watch manage and follow all the rules and laws trying to get legally it's not the poachers dear either and a lot farther from being his or hers because I'm not following the rules or paying the taxes to have the land to manage that gear
That was an awesome listen
Crazy book, crazy stories, crazy life!
All law enforcement should stop treating everyone like a potential suspect
I like some of his stories though. I had many chances to shoot the biggest bucks in my area just wasn't legit at the time for me. I hunt river bottom whitetail bucks and love every minute I'm out hunting. Note there's eyes out there everywhere now days. 😂
We get a lot of poaching where I’m at and and other year I kill a buck with buckshot in him
I love outlaw romance but at some point, when i began to realize he was just a headhunter and left the rest of the deer on the ground to go and get another head, the whole recount began to lose its luster for me.
The man is a living gem. In my eyes, he is as revered and respected as any prominent hunter.
Everybody has a friend from school with a crazy Uncle that tells stories like this lol. The "I had Saddam Hussein in my crosshairs" type stories. 😂
But these are true lol
My uncle is the guy who killed Osama

Throwing the "I found Jesus" crap is just like listening to a murderer say the same crap. I don't believe any of it, send him to prison and fine the shit out of him and make sure he never hunts again! I was a Hunter Education Instr. and this is exactly what we teach against but apparently he thought he was special, yeah he's real special!
He was caught ya idiot. It wasn’t a felony when he was caught. And he quit and ended up working on the ranch helping out with deer habitat
First negative comment I found after reading close to 100 so..This man has forgotten more about hunting then you'll ever know.

I wish there were deer like that where I'm from. Around here there are so many does and so little bucks they don't even have to fight. I've never, in over 15 years hunting, seen two shooters in one hunt.
Blind to his own hypocrisy. Such a waste of meat. Horns are for ego. Don't get me wrong, like a big rack and older critter. These deer hanging in some goofs cave who has never got his boots dirty. Credit: This guy is a great story teller. I give him that.
Yea,,this guy was a sqeakey clean hunter
If the game warden still living that caught him you should get them to together that would be epic
I knew a guy that would hunt similar to this here in the mountains of Virginia. He'd see a big buck and have his wife drop em off he'd take a bow and by the end of the weekend he'd kill that buck. Iv killed deer ever which way you can kill em but ol dude could flat out get em. Nothing like those south Texas bucks but good 140 or so class deer is giants here in VA
