NYC unveils new pavement to fight flooding

- New York City is installing porous pavement along several road sin Brooklyn as part of a new flood prevention tactic. The hope is the pavement will help drain water and reduce pressure on the city's sewer system. FOX 5 NY's Duarte Geraldino has the story.

So after it passes the test in Kensington, Boro Park & Sunset Park…it can then be used on FDR, Bronx River Pkwy, Belt Pkwy all known to flood on a regular basis?

In the winter, what happens when water seeps into the cracks and freezes? How many years will this kind of pavement last? Durability??
They wont remain porous forever. But in the short term, yeah it will help.

Ok, but how reliable will this idea be when the freezing weather comes in, will Porous Pavement be durable enough to survive heavy snow fall and ice?
Relatively speaking we already have road issues with standard pavement roads getting damage by severe winter conditions, not to mention the clean up responses unintended structural damage by use of plows scraping, and corrosion caused by sanding and salting.

The part they leave out is that in heavy rain fall the ground will get saturated very quick because there isn’t any vegetation to help absorb the water. That’s why new construction on undeveloped land requires drywells and recharge basins
5 million a mile seems like a lot of money.

Where does the water go?
Ever see what happens to a field when it rains? At least up to a point the water doesn't start running in streams like it does on driveways and streets.
So when it’s cold and freezing rain gets into the new pavement, then the temperatures drop what happens inside that pavement? Ice splits it open
I assume it has been tested through winters and for wearing etc.
My question is where are they draining the water to??? If the sewers are flooded its probably because the water is falling heavier than the ground can either absorb or drain... you can't just expect it to go somewhere else without an additional drainage.
