I'm so glad the AX tracks and characters can be unlocked in GX. The AX cup is really fun. You don't need any gameshark codes. Just a lot of skill. To unlock the characters you need to beat the Story on Very Hard. Can't remember what you had to do to get the courses but it wasn't as tough. I guess beating on all grand prix cups on the highest difficulty. ...I know that's hard. It's still much easier than beating Story chapters on Very Hard.
getting AX courses required beating all normal cups on master difficulty. Sonic Oval is unlocked by beating AX since GX's cup format doesn't have six courses per cup, so they made it time attack/mulitplayer/practice only
I remember going to every arcade near where I lived and carrying my GC memory card, desperately hoping to use it on the AX cabinet that I never saw. Such a frustrating experience as a fan.
Bad news: I knew about this game when it first came out, but I was never able to go to an arcade that had it available to play. I was completely into F-Zero GX back then, too--it was my absolute favorite racing game, and remains the one I've played the most to this day. Good news: I knew about the arcade game because I had a friend who had the version of Gameshark that allowed him to access the AX material on GX. I copied his data from his memory card to my own, and I still have both that card and the Gamecube game. Fun fact: The AX Green Plant track is the longest track on the entire disc. If you're still into F-Zero GX, I can guarantee that the AX tracks (and the extra custom parts) are definitely worth trying to unlock.
The AX courses are amazing. I'm glad you can unlock them without the arcade machine, something I didn't know for the longest time. Beating Sapphire Cup on Master is probably the most difficult challenge in Grand Prix.
It's been 20 years since the series had a new game. An appearance in Nintendo Land, two Mario Kart tracks and an entry in the 99 series. Where's the new F-Zero entry?
Where did you get hold of the card from originally? But if you do ever want to play the hacked gamecube version, apparently there's a homebrew channel mod for the Wii that turns it into AX automatically now.
I'm pretty sure it was from the Luxor in Las Vegas that no longer has a game room. It might have also been from the original Contemporary arcade in Walt Disney World as well. I've kept it in my wallet ever since I got it and sadly it worked the first few times and then the card readers all broke. (Kinda like the older Initial D Arcade Stage games)
Arcade Hunters Ah that's a shame. are they ink based or does it burn the card? Also, do you know if the gamecube memory card slots still work? Surely they do?
***** Whenever I do remember to bring a memory card on me they work. If I knew that the owner Dave had this in the arcade I would have brought mine, on my next trip I will. The GCN slots held up good on the machines I've seen, unlike the NFL Blitz 99 cabs where their either ripped off or some kid shoved gum inside.
Arcade Hunters It did seem really odd to have them in a box on the side, they would get knocked off even by transit or someone walking past. But this memory card thing was always a odd premise. just like the PCMIA card slots for Neo Geo AES machines.
I feel like F-Zero is a natural fit for arcades. It's straightforward but difficult, exhilarating, eye-catching, and fun to watch. It would be cool if the next F-Zero also had an arcade tie in similar to AX and GX. I'm vaguely aware that arcades are pretty much gone, but aren't Dave & Buster's pretty much giant adult arcades? I feel like F-Zero would fit right in as long as the cabinets were priced affordably. I imagine they could make something similar to AX far more affordably nowadays and have it still be impressive. Heck, GX is still impressive and it's a 15 year old game.
I played a standard-cabinet of F-Zero AX once, at Wild Waves in Federal Way, WA. That was in 2005, and unfortunately it was gone by the next year. It was like finding the Holy Grail. It is still my favorite arcade-experience of all time. If only I knew in advance and could've bring my memory card with GX-data on it. T_T ... ... ... ...I need to go to North Carolina now...
Everything you unlock from the AX machine you can unlock in GX by beating the harder story mode difficulties and the four Grand Prix Cups on Master (which unlocks AX Cup).
Those AX cabinets are HARD to find. But thank God that the home version GX can actually unlock all the content from the arcade counterpart through difficult means.
this is really cool to watch all these years later. I played all the F- zero games as a kid and was in middle school when the ax machine came out but could never find one except online.
Just an update on this particular cab in the video, it has a *permanent* home at MAGFest, so if anyone (you too, Nick :D) goes to MAGfest, you can now play it at their arcade section of the con. Flipper's sold it/donated to MAGfest earlier this year (2018).
Great to hear that. Glad it will be taken care of and folks will continue to be able to play it at the con. (Now if only I could get a job where I can get the week of MAGFest off...then I'd be in business)
@@JMproductions7 The Fzero AX at Mag? Im pretty sure it is. Also one of the traveling arcade vendors to cons, Psychic Drive also has one & brings it to cons at times. Keep an eye out for cons with arcade cabs provided by Psychic Drive.

It's such a sad shame that this arcade machine is very rare and hard to find nowadays. They need to bring back this arcade machine and bring it at an arcade place here in L.A. County, Southern California!
My favourite racer of all time, in my opinion it's close to perfect in every way. If I could only choose one machine to own it would be this one hands down! The game still looks amazing in an emulator rendered in HD, if only they would release it on the eshop if they aren't going to make any more (although I struggle to think of much that could be improved!). Unfortunately I've never got the GameCube controller to PC adapter to work properly and it doesn't feel quite right without one. Great video.
Just recently played this at a video game convention. They had both the solo AX machine and the 2 player machine. I only got to play it once but it was so much fun.
You can unlock the AX content in GX without playing AX actually, it's just REALLY hard. For unlocking AX characters, you have to beat story mode missions on Very Hard, and for the courses from AX, you have to beat all the other cups on Master difficulty. It's cool because the AX characters get bios and music like the other racers in GX which you obviously can't hear in AX on it's own. I would've loved to actually get to play AX when I was little, but I'm content currently with just being skilled enough at the game that I can functionally play AX. Although the AX cup is pretty easy in GX considering they're designed for arcade cabinets and not super precise analog sticks. I think they make the AI harder in the AX cup grand prix to make up for this, since I'm used to Master, and even then, the fuckery of the AI while playing AX cup seemed uped a bit. I guess it makes sense considering it's technically the last cup in the game to unlock. I still want to play an actual AX arcade cabinet at some point.
I love this arcade game and it is my favorite. Unfortunately, only in Las Vegas is the place I can play this arcade game. I can't find it anymore in California

+Dante Barcenas It's well worth the trip. The owner keeps getting in a lot of great pinball machines. They recently got America's Most Haunted and a Limited Edition Game of Thrones.
Even though there is an AX mode that can be unlocked via gameshark, if all you want are the AX tracks you can unlock them on GX by beating all 4 Grand Prix Cups on Master difficulty.
I have one of those pilot license cards still sealed in the wrapper with a picture of Captain Falcon on it. GX is my favorite game and I finally unlocked AX cup and Don Genie/Fat Shark after many hours of practice. I would have loved the chance to go on the deluxe cabinet, and unlock the exclusive machine parts to have on original hardware without cheats. Great video anyway.
I was so happy when I found out I could Unlock AX stuff on GX by beating very hard story mode. Hard to unlock. But AX had the most fun and easy tracks!
I wonder if I can get my hands on one of this arcades. I’m a very big fan of F-Zero. So much so that I even read and still remember most of the character’s backstories. For example, Mighty Gazelle, which is one of my favorite characters and favorite theme song, I believe has one of the best backstories of them all. Having partake on the F-Zero massive crash, he lost most of his body parts and had to be replaced with cybernetic ones. Later, he decided to replace them all altogether and became a full cyborg just to enhance his driving skills and devote himself to be the best F-Zero racer in the galaxy. If that isn’t an awesome backstory, I don’t know what is.
An F-Zero arcade game? Made by Sega? With a slot where a Nintendo GameCube memory card can be plugged into it to download or upload data from F-Zero GX? That uses "Triforce" hardware conceived from a business alliance between Sega, Nintendo and Namco? Now I've seen everything lol

Vegas is where I got my card. I saw it first at Luxor back when the game came out and kept the card. I know they 2-3 units of the game scattered through the building but I doubt the card readers still work. (Since I deal with Sega Derby Owners Club that uses the same system and I doubt they make replacement cards for this.)
i played this game earlier this year, it gave me a blister cuz i played over an hour straight and tried snaking, which moved the seat left to right like crazy XD

Never played this, only GX on the Gamecube. At least you can unlock the AX racers, tracks, and parts in GX. Would be fun to try this arcade though with the steering wheel and pedals and such.
digimonFTW22456 You can. Games in the Initial-D series use the same kind of cards and since their important to the game most places keep them running. The biggest problem now is finding replacement cards to use with them.
I didn't get the chance to play this game for the first time until yesterday at AwesomeCon. In terms of variety, it is quite lacking. But it makes up for it in terms of giving players a more realistic view of driving rather than just using a controller. In terms of difficulty, I think it depends upon your skill level as a driver. Overall, I think it is good.
I still feel disappointed at myself because I forgot to play this game when I was in a arcade in another city. But at least I can play this game with Nintendont.
Not sure if it's the game my cinema had as a kid but it looks very much like it and if it was they had like 8 of these bad boi linked together, wanted to play it as a kid but i was unfortunately too small to reach the controls at the time.
The action replay code only makes the game execute the leftover AX content. To play the actual AX, you need to get a Wii (RVL-001) or a Wii U with Virtual Wii, install homebrew and use the Nintendont app that allows you to play Gamecube ROMs that also has Sega Triforce games support, or go to the arcades. This is where you can play AX now: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1imqIyLV79feSjTHn3yJcWi_nZSQIIT82mioM9oipVTo/htmlview
I love this game! OMG they use to have it in family fun center in Anaheim. Now they only have it in Las Vegas Circus Circus :( Good thing I go to Vegas ever summer!
Usually it's $2500-5000, depending on the country (Russia is the exception). One of the only AX Deluxe cabinet in Australia, for instance, was being sold for US$3500 recently. The cheapest someone ever bought an AX Deluxe cabinet for was probably $100-$500, there were four Deluxe cabinets in an arcade junkyard near Moscow, Russia that were completely taken apart, standing there for 6 years, covered in a thick mixture of wet dust and bird crap and people thought it was of no value. An arcade connoisseur from Moscow bought two of them (the ones that had the most parts intact, a third machine could be restored with additional parts but not all four machines) and restored them completely. It took him a month of hard work and now they're standing in an arcade right in the city centre. I've been tracking F-Zero AX cabinets in Russia. As it turns out, Russia has the most amount of F-Zero AX machines, even more than Japan, and quite a lot of them are still undiscovered. It's probably the only country where the AX machines are not considered ultra-rare. There are at least 15 machines in 10 public locations in Moscow alone. Here's the list of all known AX machines: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1imqIyLV79feSjTHn3yJcWi_nZSQIIT82mioM9oipVTo/edit#gid=0 Go to the Misc. tab and you'll see the prices at which the AX cabinets are usually sold in Russia.
think ive bought about 5 different copys of gx since release just bought it again with game cube still has the fun game play i enjoyed 11 years ago but never ever seen a ax in person
That's still going to be GX, just with the AX modes. The whole AX on GX disc misconception is absolutely not true. AX and GX are both very different games with very different physics.
What kind of monitor is that? It doesn't fit the look of the cab at all. It looks like they just pulled a TV out of somebody's living room and shoehorned it in there. The rest of the cab looks pretty sweet though.
I know, being a CRT it's all boxy and they should have made it look like it was molded inside of the cab. It looks like my old Sony Trinatron. Not sure on the exact monitor but it's a late style CRT so they have a really nice picture.

I love F-Zero GX and F-Zero AX is also good.
F-Zero X on N64 was good too, and of coarse the original F-Zero on SNES is classic.
Not sure if it's the game my cinema had as a kid but it looks very much like it and if it was they had like 8 of these bad boi linked together, wanted to play it as a kid but i was unfortunately too small to reach the controls at the time.
Thank you so much for putting this video
I literally own one of these machines...it’s in my garage!! No BS!
where do you live hahahaha
Let others play it
This video is awesome. I loved these things. /nostalgia
You can unlock the AX Cup in GX, but it's missing a course.
I bought the logitech wheel and the pro action replay to run this on the gamecube. Its really fun, but id still buy an arcade unit if i had the cash..
That card gimmick, lol 😆😂😆
Looks like you had fun though. 👍🎮
Never knew this and it seems cool.
Great job, Nick!
Wow ! Amazing ! Thank You So Much !
If you want to play it today, here's where you can find it: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1imqIyLV79feSjTHn3yJcWi_nZSQIIT82mioM9oipVTo/htmlview
I love this game! OMG they use to have it in family fun center in Anaheim. Now they only have it in Las Vegas Circus Circus :( Good thing I go to Vegas ever summer!
Es el juego de mi vida, no hay ningún juego que sienta velocidad como este.
A mí o me tocó jugar primero la versión AX y tiempo después pude conseguir en Walmart el GX para el Nintendo Game Cube :∆
So the F-Zero AX is in Circus Circus

How much could one of this machines cost?
Hoping to play this soon! I don't wanna cheat, that's just unfair.
I picked up an F-zero AX arcade game for 400 but did not work. it gives me an error code01. can any one tell me what's wrong or pay what I pay for it.
You found a great place to ask.
Is it still there? If not, can you find another?
Damn... Bring this arcade machine back to my country for God sake 😑
One of the best!
If this machine were to be sold, how much would it cost?
0:09 Sorry but F-Zero doesn't have Sci-Fi. But futuristic ambient... Yes
And Sci-Fi in 2003 it was too early to do it.
You and I use the same car
Can you spin attack in this one?
Yes, you can, but it's done differently here.
You sound like Professor Frink from the Simpsons
think ive bought about 5 different copys of gx since release just bought it again with game cube still has the fun game play i enjoyed 11 years ago but never ever seen a ax in person
You need action replay for ax in gx
That's still going to be GX, just with the AX modes. The whole AX on GX disc misconception is absolutely not true. AX and GX are both very different games with very different physics.
You can unlock everything as relates in gx by beating the cups on master and completing story mode on very hard for the characters
Wow
By the way do not try to snake in F-zero AX it does not work very well.
Help
I played a better version of the arcade in Japan
What kind of monitor is that? It doesn't fit the look of the cab at all. It looks like they just pulled a TV out of somebody's living room and shoehorned it in there. The rest of the cab looks pretty sweet though.
I know, being a CRT it's all boxy and they should have made it look like it was molded inside of the cab. It looks like my old Sony Trinatron. Not sure on the exact monitor but it's a late style CRT so they have a really nice picture.
i love late CRTs, the black color is godlike, like in an OLED TV
