A) Love that your channel exists. Your close ups on cards and game play make it easier to learn B) I'm obsessed with Spirit Island, and it's actually a manageable and relaxing experience to play solo with just one spirit and one map tile
Well dang, thanks Ryan! I really do need to get some solo games in. Life has just been so dang crazy...... and I could really use some relaxation. That really sounds like a very fun puzzle to sit down and think through.
Tom you are fantastic! Up until I saw this runthrough I thought Richard Ham was good. Keep it up. Nice and clean......straight and direct...........All praise to you sir!!
Well dang! Thanks Steve! That’s an insanely nice thing of you to say. I just finished watching Rahdo’s “Rise of Queensdale” runthrough - so I’m a big fan of him! I appreciate you watching and commenting :-D
uve sold me on this dude. Getting this shortly. Also, the fear thing if no one is in a section to make scared, could be that word has got out that terrifying things happen to people who build on that section of the island so no one builds there. woooooo! haha
Thanks!!!! Once in a while some bad dice rolls bring out frustrated words.... but growing up in Utah, and knowing my nephews and/or students could be watching, I’ll always do my best to keep it family-friendly. Thanks a ton for subscribing and commenting! Welcome to the channel!
Brilliant play through, the mistakes (and not winning) made for a great learning experience. Many thanks, the video answered a lot of questions for me.
This is the next game on my list and while looking for play throughs I found this video. Great job making it entertaining while showing the mechanics. Thanks !!
Spirit Island is such and amazing game. You asked about strategy mistakes, and the key one is focusing on preventing ravages early on. If you focus on ravages, you will always be behind the curve. You need to prevent builds by moving or destroying explorers, which prevents *future* ravages and possibly even future explores. Every build you prevent now is a ravage you don't *have* to defend against later, freeing you up to deal with the future builds that are coming instead. You can afford to let a couple of ravages/blight through the first couple of rounds, if you can prevent as many builds as possible. It is counter-intuitive, since blight is the way you lose the game, you can easily get focused on preventing it, but slowing the invader's proliferation is much more important. Eventually, you can even carve out safe-areas in the center where the invaders don't get to explore (because there they have no units in areas adjacent to the terrain exploring), which is a full build-ravage cycle you don't have to deal with!
1) I agree about how great this game is. It mushes my brain in ways that very few other games do. As I think I mentioned in the video, I have a weakness for thinking ahead - so my first few plays of this game were terrible! But I’ve been slowly getting the hang of it.... 2) thanks for such good advice! I really like the way you worded your advice, and next time I play I’m gonna pull this comment back up and do my best to follow it! See how things turn out.... and when I lose, I can blame you rather than myself! 😜 3) thanks for watching! And huge thanks for the time you put into writing such a great and thoughtful comment. I really appreciate it!
Also, when picking cards, especially for spirits which have powerful innate powers, the elements are as important as the text. I typically barely consider powers which don't have my elements. Your innate powers don't cost energy or card plays, so trigger them as often as possible!
At about 1:27:40 you Explore in the Mountains on Good Ol' Stone Face's board, but you've played the power that causes Invaders to skip all actions in that region, pretty sure that's an error, but luckily(?) doing it correctly wouldn't have stopped your loss. I for one welcome our new plastic overlords.
Well, it’s in the works! She would be very fun to have in a video - that’s something we keep talking about. The problem is that we don’t live near each other.... so when we do get together to play, actually recording the session doesn’t really happen... specifically because I usually travel to her, and she has 6 young kids running around... not too conducive to recording... BUT, I really am trying to get some other people into my recording sessions for sure. It’ll just take some time :-) But thanks so much for watching in the meantime!
Tom Teaches yeah it's a 6th player playmat... it's in stock in the greater than games website along with the orange and green player markers as well and the promo characters
It's a great game, but yeah, it's hard to play more than one spirit solo, and playing one spirits seems like lacking something, since most of them cooperate pretty well, so, it's better to grab some friends to play it.
For sure. Especially to really focus on learning that spirit and playing them as well as possible.... So I absolutely hear you and agree with you. I'm sure there are some people who can, but my brain isn't really one of them.
@@TomTeachesGames yeah for sure. Btw thanks for the video. I want to try this out and it is explained really well :). Something I was thinking about is the 1 land away from your presence range. Does it have to be 1 away from every land with presence or can you choose one land with presence and use a land next to it that also has presence as target? Because technically it would be one away from a land with presence it just has some itself.
If I understand your question... because it’s been a while since I made the movie.... you pick one of your lands with presence, and go one away from that. So, just one away from one of your presence tokens. Not from all of them....? Hope that helps!

I love that! And I want to hear how you do! I have yet to win.... or survive into the third phase....
Just found your channel. I'm a Insta sub! Love how you think out loud. Very well done. And A+ for clean language.

Dang! Thanks Michael! It’s always fun to hear from you 😀 I hope your year is going well so far!
I like that you showed us what cards you were considering using, and the types of strategies you were considering with these cards.
Thanks a ton for watching and commenting 😀

You’re welcome! I hope you kick some invader’s booty! (I have yet to win....)

Great catch! Thank you for that. I went ahead and got it noted in the subtitles.
Great job... really helped a lot. I'm a believer and subscriber!
Thanks a million! I’m excited to have you on board (Get it?) with my crazy!
Nice playthrough! You could ask your sister to join you in a future Spirit Island (or any co-op game for that matter) playthrough.

You have to move the Daha to work, with defence to win this game
If a card has a line going through the range not the usual 0, 1 or 2 what does it mean. Thanks in advance if anyone can help😎
It means it does not have a range. It is applicable anywhere on the board.
Love this game !!@! I'm so excited to get my playmat!
There’s a playmat?!?
Tom Teaches yeah it's a 6th player playmat... it's in stock in the greater than games website along with the orange and green player markers as well and the promo characters
Dang! Count me in!
1:50:13 you picked 2 defective slow spirits in a game vs the clock, that was not a good combo

Smoke monster. Not Shadow monster. Are you sure you are a Lost fan? 😂
Oh my gosh! 😂😂😂 It’s literally my very favorite tv show.... I should have know better..... 😜
waaaiit a second. this is an Island... wouldnt there be water all around the land and not just at the top and Bottom. :D this makes no sense :D
I know, right?!? But man, I’m glad about this when it comes to the water-based invasions....

@@TomTeachesGames yes that was what I meant thank you
Think of the edges of the island that aren't "coastal" as cliffs, or dangerous shoals, etc, where no ship can approach or land.
