    My tips on these topics. Obviously every character is different, so these are generalizations that apply to many characters but occasionally not one or two.
    Placing presence: Begin by having presence in no more than one land of each type. You want to prevent all ravages, but most of all you want to prevent ravages in lands where you have presence. Not doubling up land types means you only have to protect your presence against one ravage per turn in the early game. Once you can target everything you need to on your own island, start moving into your allies islands. When you do so, place your presence in lands where they already have presence. That way you can share defense duties. Also, if you know you can't defend a particular land, make sure not to surround it too tightly. Leave space for blight cascades.
    Presence tracks: All things being equal, it is almost always better to put down more presence than to get any other benefit. If you can sacrifice something to put down more presence, you probably should. More presence is a permanent upgrade. Also, uncovering a "reclaim 1" space on a presence track is a major bonus. It can dramatically stretch out how long you go before having to reclaim, and is kind of like inflating your hand with multiple copies of your favorite cards.
    Choosing powers: Sometimes you have an innate that you literally can't use every turn. For example, until the super late game it is very, VERY hard to get the third level of Shadows Flicker Like Flame's innate twice in a row without reclaiming. This is a good time to grab a major power, because you may be able to create one hand that activates the innate, and another hand that activates the major power's upgraded version. This isn't relevant to all characters, but for those it is relevant to, it is a big deal. It can also let you diverge into other roles, which can really help. If you know a character has a hard time repeatedly activating high level innates, and you know you have a full hand of good cards that will activate that innate, you can literally stop worrying about elements and start picking for efficiency or for powering up a major power. With someone like Shadows, that might look like one hand of mostly starter cards (and activation of a high level of the innate), and another entirely different hand that activates a major power. Play them in alternation, then reclaim. By contrast, with River, you might just want to activate the innate twice in a row, or more. It's more achievable and has a big payoff.
    Preventing blight: The goal is efficiency. Allowing the blight and then removing it fixes a problem with one card. And if the invaders go after that land again, you can fix it with one card again. Defense is less powerful because the second time the invaders go after that land, they'll probably have more damage and you'll need more defense cards. Having Dahan around to kill the invaders during the first ravage is good, but if that's a plan you'll need cards to move the Dahan which is also inefficient. Killing explorers before they build is also highly efficient, and removes the invaders so the next time the card comes up there's nothing present already to add to the new arrivals. Every spirit has its own issues, but generally speaking, removing blight > removing explorers > preventing builds > defending builds.
    My bonus tip: Many spirits in the original box are there to teach you a different core skill.
    Second bonus tip: Count cards. Suppose you're about to flip over the fourth card from phase 2. You've seen sands, jungles, and wetlands. That means that the next card is either a mountain or the coast. You also have a card in hand that kills 1 explorer at range 1... but in the slow phase. If the invaders explore into a land with a city, killing that explorer won't help much. If the invaders explore into an empty land, killing that explorer will stop the entire explore/build/ravage cycle. Since you know where the invaders are likely to explore, you can calculate whether this card is likely to help this round. If you have at least one empty and targetable mountain and coastal space, this card is guaranteed to help. If all of those lands are already built up, then this is not a good round for that card.

      While you do generally want to prevent ravages, it can be better to focus on preventing builds, and to some extent explores, especially early on before there's a lot of presence on the board, and there's not much blight in play yet. If you can clear a part of the island so that some lands are out of range of explore cards(invaders only explore next to villages/towns), then the game gets that much easier as you'll have less problem areas to solve.

    One thing I noticed is that the sooner you disrupt the "invader cycle", the better. Not only because it's easier to deal with an explorer building than with a town ravaging, but because if you interrupt the cycle earlier you don't have to deal with the later (more deadly) steps. The ideal, then, would be preventing exploring, so you wouldn't need to worry about that land for 2 entire turns. However, the only way to do so is destroying inland towns/cities (since the coast is always "explorable". Therefore, I usually try to push invaders to the coast. Other thing is that apart from spirits that have a "clear" path (lightning heavily favors cardplay, with that juicy innate and low energy. On the other hand, vital earth hás awesome energy generation and poor cardplay and innate, which favors major Powers), I usually prefer to go cardplay earlier, triggering innates and a lot of small effects to get the Island under relative control. Later on the game I migrate to major Powers, when hopefully the energy generation is already advanced and you have at least 1 or 2 Powers that can be forgotten without much sweat.

    • @BeingFriends
      @BeingFriends  4 роки тому +4

      You’re so right! Preventing explores is huge. once you can start doing that, then you have so much more space to just absolutely destroy everything, where they still have explored! I find it to be pretty difficult though, and often I win before I prevent any explores!
      Yeah that makes sense! Honestly, after making this video, I started favoriting the energy/element tracks, for the most part! I’d usually try to get to 2 card plays fairly early though still. But in general, I’ve enjoyed having a really long reclaim cycle in the beginning of the game, which allows me to just keep doing the strong growth abilities and placing presence! I’m sacrificing the chance to play a lot of cards early and use my innates more, in order to seriously grow my spirit so much more.

      Like I tell a lot of new players to the game, you must not think about what is going on right during that turn. So many people get hung up on fighting against what is currently happening, and not spending enough attention on what is going to happen next turn. I focus most of my attention on preventing builds throughout all the islands in play, not caring much about explores or ravages. Because if you can deal with builds, you won't have to worry as much about ravages. Also movement in this game is incredibly powerful. Being able to move settlers out of lands that are going to build, or towns/cities away from lands they are going to ravage, is huge! Look at the invader cards - if there is a place where moving them won't cause any problems (most of the time a single settler won't blight a land, so move it into a ravage area if it will be the only one there), then do it.
      When I play one of my favorite spirits, River Surges in Sunlight, I play to its major strength - which is playing a bunch of 0-1 energy cards to build up its innate damaging power (so I just blitz the card play track and only take cards that are very low cost, but have water elements). It can generate energy by making Dahan and then getting energy from having Dahan. Using its many push abilities can help with blocking builds and ravages.

    Good video. All tips are great! Your tip on growth options and card cycling is more circumstantial. But the main tips that was awesome in your video was "understand your role" when thinking about growth and card draw. Great tip. One main tip that is missing is to have the team focus on the inside of the island. I think the beginner trap is you only focus on your own board. Really everyone should be focusing on the inside and getting that cleared out as soon as possible. A prevented explore action is a build and a ravage you don't have to deal with.

    • @BeingFriends
      @BeingFriends  3 роки тому

      I think that's probably true! Strategy in most games are more often than not circumstantial i think! those are the kinds of things you learn from experience more than anything! now im sure I might have over emphasized it in this video 😆😂

But not too recently, I've discovered the amazing benefits of gaining and using slow powers, especially early on in the game when the invaders aren't that powerful and you can do some sick stuff after they do just about nothing. Yes! Do more videos please. Some of the new spirits are really difficult, plus I have difficulty getting any wins on levels above three.
    How do you read the adversary Scotland? Seems like you can only get two cities per coast, but by doing level two you automatically put a second city on the coast their bodies instantly losing.

    • @IssacW841T

      Scotland's additional loss condition "Trade Hub" triggers if the number of costal cities is greater than twice tje number of boards. For instance, in a game with two boards, the spirits loose if there are five or more cities.

    Many thanks. We bought Spirit Island a couple of months ago, we’ve played it a couple of times, and have been completely crushed each time. In fact we’ve been struggling to see why it’s so highly rated. I think the mistake we’re making is being too tactical and not strategic enough: concentrating on defending as much as we can this turn, and not thinking about long-term spirit growth. And that of course was your main tip.

  • @buckcherry2564
    @buckcherry2564 4 місяці тому +1

    I know it is old, but a quick comment you kind of touched on (and maybe rephrasing what you said...either way, I think it IS the biggest tip). The game is going to hinge entirely on card plays. That is how you cause change to the board state/game flow. Playing more cards gives you more actions and powers innates (yet another "card play"). That should always be your focus. Energy is the wall that prevents that outcome and should be managed as such, making it a very important, but secondary factor. Lastly, it should be noted that Major Powers can substitute "more plays" and are slightly transposable though not 1:1.
    Sometimes the energy track has other tools built into it that make card plays more effective or can even equate to an innate being certain (ie a +Cardplay effect) and there are other shenanigans, but ultimately, card plays. Banked energy is potential that isn't helping you (even in the case of events with costs, there are other ways to pay those that don't handicap you with 2-4 turns of saving energy that isn't helping you win.)
    EDIT: On your Slow Powers comment, that is EXACTLY correct. Take the first ravage of the game and get 1-2 blight, but treating your slows as next turn's faster-than-fasts means you are permanently ahead with much stronger powers. That was the biggest shift in my thinking from when I was new.

    • @cgarvie151

      Thats the number ONE tip. Esp at higher levels you need to choose where your going to let blight. in order to make sure you deal with a build. as a well dealt build is a ravage saved, and Its possible at lower levels with allowing a couple of blight to end up where you have No ravages and you just keep dealing with builds. and then its game over for the invaders

It seriously is such a huge relief every time you get to move a blight back to the card. Also an interesting thing to me is that, say your blight removal cards only work on sands and mountains; then now you can be alot more lenient with those land types, since you can just remove the blight from those lands, and you are able to shift your whole focus to the others!

      The one tip that I would add to this list that wasn’t covered well was that I see too many people concentrate so hard on reacting to the Invaders. They try so hard to attack them where they are instead of moving them to where they don’t do anything.
      The best strategy in this game is to use the Ravage -> Build -> Explore system against the Invaders. If you move an explorer before they build, they cannot do build or ravage. If you move that town, it cannot ravage.

    • @Iamwrongbut
      @Iamwrongbut 4 роки тому

      AzureinkVI was going to comment the same thing. The best way to beat high level invaders is to prevent builds (in my opinion). If you can move explorers, like you said, not only do you have the next turn off from worrying about them building, but you also don’t have to worry about the following turn’s ravage in those lands. So if you prevent a build, you prevented both a build and ravage, which gives you SO much breathing room to save up energy and then blow up a problem spot with a major or innate, etc.
      He mentions this a little at 17:05 but could be a whole tip in and of itself.

    Awesome Content!🎉
    Please more content about spirit island. Specifically these areas:
    Make a part 2 of this video, using only the tips, tricks & strategies straight from your comments section, please?
    Compare the board game to the app, please?
    Whilst playing with two players cooperative -
    Strategies for the most commonly hard defensive spirit and offensive spirit combinations.
    How much to communicate during gameplay? What are some key points that partners neglect to mention?
    We would love to see a 2 player coop, and then a 4 player tag-team game.
    Two special strategies for the hardest spirits in the game. (This would probably make great “YT shorts” per spirit)
    How to convince your boyfriend to play with you?
    Thank you for sharing! ❤

    Where to place: If you have some decent 1-range, look at the board and realize there are usually two lands that, together, can touch every land type (remember the invaders are only affecting one per stage at the start).
    Reclaim: you can usually draw out time to reclaims with card gains then hit it in the midgame to have a pile of options when the game gets hard.
    Let them do their thing: that can be a problem later on. Often, your card gains have one option that can contain invaders early. Killing/pushing an explorer is easier than taking out buildings and controlling blight.
    On blight: yeah, don't sacrifice to prevent early blight. If you can do it with no real expenditure, then do it, but don't give up an explorer kill to play a blight cleaner.
    Fast/slow: fast is nice but slow just affects one card later down the track and are often MUCH stronger. "Fast for the next round" is definitely the best way to think of them. Don't let fast become a crutch.

    I myself like to match Spirits.
    For instance 2 that both utilize Wild. There is a spirit that is able to place presence up to 3 tiles away as long as there is a Wild. If an other Spirit is able to generate Wild as well it is a great way of covering the board fast.
    Besides, Wild is great for even preventing an explore. 1 Card play makes a whole 3 phase problem go away (let's call them super slow cards).

    When I'm looking at minor powers, I'm looking at what elements I need FIRST and then the effect SECOND. The elements to hit those innate powers is always more important than anything else. When I'm looking at major powers, however, I'm looking at the effects FIRST and the elements SECOND. The elements are definitely worth considering, because if you can hit the kickers on the major powers, that's usually game winning. However, the effect is always more important for the major powers.

    • @BeingFriends
      @BeingFriends  3 роки тому

      I totally get that! This is where paying attention to range and placing your presence accordingly becomes incredibly important, because most of the time you can play a slow power knowing that wherever they explore, you can have a solid answer!! Luckily you don't have to choose the land you target until the slow phase, so it's not too hard to be flexible!!

    I think you have fallen into a bit of a fallacy. Yes, reclaiming your cards is the weakest option out of all the growth options, but you're getting all your good cards back so it is certainly extremely powerful. Once you can play 4-5 cards per turn, it's not unheard of to just reclaim every turn. Yes the other growth options are better, but are they as good as playing your 5 most powerful cards every turn? In the early game of course you need to spread out and build your engine. But later, reclaiming every turn isn't that crazy.

    There is no “Secret Sauce” here fellow board gamers. Some people will NEVER be good at this game no matter how many tips you throw their way. I would say that if you do not like, or are not good at “Chess”, then save yourself some time and take a pass on this one. I have been a musician for 40+ years... music has always just come “natural” to me. Through the years I have noticed that some people just do not have an “ear” for music and NO amount of tutoring can change that... You have to be born with it... “Secret Sauce”. Spirit Island, like Chess takes a certain type of though process that just does not come natural to some of us... -> ME.
    Not trying to be a defeatist but just realistic. Thanx for the tips. Although I really am terrible at this game, for some reason, maybe pride, I keep trying. Maybe I can beat it... maybe?
