I'm a Canadian Armed Forces Veteran and I'm not Anti-Police or anything but the Police in the U.S seem to have lowerd their standards in the last 20 years. They're not properly trained or educated. It seems anyone now can become a Police Officer with only the most Basic Requirements compared other countries that Require a University Degree and Highly Specialized training in Fitness, Psychology, Safety and also psychological testing before serving. Even the guards in U.S prisons are fat/obese which makes them a liability to others.

You can't detain someone based on pure hearsay. It might be the most true thing you've ever said, but you can't JUST have your word. And you should damn well know that before you ask the police to do something about it, because now you're going to have that lack of action hang over those cops heads forever like it's their fault he killed his family.

They can do this to anyone who has explicitly said they have plans to harm themselves or others. Even if it's family members if they have reasonable suspicion they can institutionalize someone. Police act when they shouldn't, and Don't when they're needed

As I person who has had 5150 called on them this behavior from the cops doesn't surprise me. My therapist actually had to call on ambulance for me. If she hadn't called I would have left and done what I was going to do. I had to wait 12 hours just to go to a clinic. When I finally got picked up, the EMTs said "do you really need to go you dont seem crazy?" Everyone is dismissive of mental health until something happens.

as someone from san diego, who works in social services, this story always really gets to me because we're trained to report dangerous or concerning behavior to authorities. the psychiatrist is a mandated reporter & the cops didn't even try to do their job, when she was correctly doing hers.
They didn't want to do the extra paperwork.
His family did everything right. The cops kept saying we cant do anything until he does something. Well didnt i hear the therapist say he threatened to hit his mother, thats a legit charge, he destroyed property, thats a charge. Im glad the family is suing the city. Both families should link up. Because clearly the police were being lazy. Shit they could've made up a bogus crime ,they do it all the time. 😮

The guy talked about driving on the wrong side of the road, he told his mother he would kill her over a thermostat, the parents were doing everything they could, and even a neighbor was like. "Yo, something is wrong with this guy, someone needs to hold him."
And the response from cops was "well its just an infraction, he needs to do something violent first." This could have been prevented if they did a hold or tried at least!
I understand why this frustrates people but you have to remember that you have the advantage of hindsight. You know what happened. The cops can't detain you just because and they shouldn't.
Let's put it this way, let's say you have a family member that doesn't like you and frivolously reports you to the police. You're going g to be real upset if they detain you as you should be. The other thing is a lot of people might become violent because they're being detained for something they didn't do.

Right. Like no one was asking for this guy to be arrested. They just wanted him on a psychiatric hold, which was absolutely necessary as we’ve seen. Just awful for the victims. Plus, I’m pretty sure cops have put people on involuntary psychiatric hold for much less reasons.
@@specialsause949 driving the wrong way at over 100 miles, an hour, getting out of control with his mother, and even a psychiatrist called in. I don’t think he should’ve been arrested, but he absolutely should’ve been put on an involuntary hold. I genuinely think this situation could’ve been prevented if the cops had actually taken their job seriously. It was not like one or two little things. This guy was clearly spiraling.
Yep. Same thing with stalking and threats. They tell you nothing they can do even when you show them a text of your ex saying he will rape and strangle you. They basically said don't delete that it could be evidence one day. Like wtf??

I’m not surprised as this happened in San Diego. This is also the same city where the McDonalds massacre happened. The gunman in that incident attempted to get help for his mental health before the shooting but was never called back by the clinic.
You can't help someone who don't want to be helped. And you can't held someone against their will, depending on where he was.
@@Luci-pz8xx Yeah that's weird. It's possible in my country. My parents did it when i was 19. An ambulance came, they took me, held me for 72h to assess me, and it saved me from ending myself.
As I'm watching this, I'm looking for why everyone is saying hid parents should be ashamed of themselves. I haven't found it yet. They tried multiple times to get him help and even had the cops over to get a 5150 on their son, but in typical cop fashion "we can't do anything until something actually happens".
This doesn't seem like a parenting issue. This seems like an 18 yo kid tasted success that began faltering due to him running out of ideas for content. He spiraled until this tragedy happened. He had no history of this behaviour, no previous issues with the law or drugs or anything. So why are we hating on the parents?
Edit: To any future comments, I'm sorry but I'm done responding. Half a year later and still there are so many people in the replies alone thinking the parents' are at fault and that they know better and know what his life was like growing up. I'm done with the ignorance.
You have absolutely zero fucking clue what you're talking about. You cannot just hold someone on a 5150 because someone said something. There has to be objective credible evidence of them threatening to hurt themselves or others. People have rights, and there's nothing the cops legally could have done. Their hands were tied. At that moment, there was literally zero evidence. Someone's word is hearsay and not legally admissible evidence. And what the hell are you talking about, "they can't arrest you until you do finally do something???" Uhhhh, yeah, that's how our country and rights and legal system works. It's called due process. What are you advocating for a minority report situation where people are detained before they have even committed a crime?

I agree. As shown in the video, a neighbor who was a psychiatrist told the police that they need to hold the mcskillet for a while because he was showing signs of having an episode or a manic attack. The parents even tried to put him in a hospital. But the police just shrugged it off as that as "nothing has happened yet."
Although, I do have to blame the parents a bit on how they should've tried more in stopping their kid who was showing signs of some very dangerous train of thoughts. Love your kid, sure. But know when they is clearly overstepping it, leaving that alone could leave a notion in their mind that what they are doing is fine.

It really is tragic that his family did everything right. The father parked his car blocking the driveway to prevent him leaving, his mother and neighbor kept trying to get police to lock him up to get the help he desperately needed. And while he was clearly not in his right mind he killed himself and two completely innocent people.
Nothing but victims in this scenario.
Except the cops. They definitely should have known better

The cops don't actually have to know or enforce the law, nor do they face consequences for breaking the law or abusing their authority. They're basically street thugs with a license to kill.
I hate to say it because there's no blame to be passed. But the police told the parents they could impose a 5150 when Mcskillet committed a crime. Ramming his dad's car was the excuse they needed but dad waited from morning till well into the afternoon before contacting police. Units could have been looking for & possibly intercepted him before he could commit the carnage, had it been reported earlier in the day when he rammed his dad's car.

I agree with others in the comments that the cops are at fault here, this dude was serious mental ill and they're response is basically "not our problem" if they just listen to the parents & the Neighbor then no one would've lost their life here.

I actually feel sorry for the psychiatrist too... She knew what was happening, and the police just ignored her, I imagine she's gone some very deep guilt over that. Her profession wasn't taken seriously, and innocent people died >_<
And in the UK, police CAN detain someone if they think they are a danger to themselves or others, to then be assessed by medical trained people.

It's unfortunate that this could have possibly been avoided if the proper services were rendered to the guy. I mean, even if you couldn't detain him, he could have surely been monitored to some extent without invalidating his rights. I mean, there's an entire clip of him mowing through a elementary school gate a few hours after the parents notified the police...I know he's in a McLaren, but geez...That'd of been the perfect opportunity to grab him.

When it comes to 5150 holds, it’s really up to the cops’ (or fire department) mood if they want to act on it. What that cop said about going to jail for commuting McKillet was complete BS. I have seen people put on holds for way less. I once had a patient come into my office after literally just trying to hang himself, he had fresh ligature marks on his neck. Wrote a hold on him and called 911. Fire department comes and says the same spiel about “he’s not doing anything right now so I can’t take him in”. I just calmly agreed with him and then asked for his name and badge number “just for full documentation officer” and he quickly changed his tune. In the end it’s just how lazy or vindictive the cops feel like being. The mistake here was that McSkillet wasn’t the psychiatrist’s formal patient so she had no leverage to force them to do anything
... a lot of the time their hands are tied. They need to be able to prove someones mental state is such a problem that they are a danger to themselves or others in order to put them in a psychiatric hold otherwise they could be sued for a shit ton of money and lose their jobs.
While yes speeding the opposite way on a road going like 100+ mph over the speed limit definitely seems like something a mentally unstable person would do there are a ton of people who speed in and out of traffic and sometimes go the opposite way of the road that arent having mental breakdowns...
How is "having physical evidence" of self harm "held on way less" than something that might not even happened? They're literally talking about something that there was no evidence of doing. The psychiatrist had never spoken to him. "I had heard he did something bad" isn't really an argument. People have lost decades out of their lives in prison people of hersay, and its garbage. There's a reason we're having to pay for people finally getting released for 17, 20, or 30 years in prison for something that was proven false.

Everything in this scene is a basic idea of white privilege, "We called once, and nothing happened!" "A white dude drove through a fence, it must have been an accident with no ill intent!" "I am a woman with a degree! The police must believe me!"
No one could put forth a bare minimum of effort when it mattered the most. The parents were LITERALLY told "when he does something violent. call us." They refused to do so when he did something violent. There's a reason systems protecting the mentally ill are in place. The parents were explained this. I've shown this. And a psychiatrist is explained this throughout school.
No one could be arsed to do anything the right way.
Truth is many African Americans have been put into asylums for claiming that Various US laws favored Whites over minorities. The Washington Post ran an article titles "US Virginia mental institution for black patients, opened after the civil War, yields a trove of disturbing records" which details this very phenomenon. We STILL have rich white people calling 911 over anyone non-white in their neighborhood. The school literally saw a white guy drive through a fence, and failed to call 911, until the white dude tried to kill him. A psychatrist said "you should commit him" without even attempting the bare minimum, because apparently, mental health doesn't have bare minimums? The parents saw their son wreck their car, and were like "Eh, we called once. Nothing will happen."

A family member of mine had a manic episode, he was paranoid, didn't sleep, was reckless and unpredictable. It was impossible to put him in the hospital, he thought that he''s fine and you can't put someone in mental hospital against their will. He was recklessly driving at high speed and we were terrified he would crash, potentially hurting someone else as well. We were very lucky that he started to understand something is not right and we managed to convince him to go in hospital. He's good now, but it was a very scary experience. There definitely should be a better way of helping someone like this before there's been a serious consequences.
A guy in a sports car driving the other direction as my sister and her friend on a rainy day lost control - my sister had severe injuries and broken bones, her friend died on impact, her father at the wheel never fully recovered his mobility. People don't take driving seriously enough and people fucking die
Edit - The sportscar driver died on impact as well. Ironically saves a lot of legal trouble
That's seems like a pretty tragic situation, sorry about your sister's friend and I hope that her Dad and your sister were able to recover from that accident.
But unlike the sports car driver in that situation, McSkillet wasn't able to take his driving seriously enough due to his mental health severely spiraling out of his control at that time. Just seems like yet another tragic situation except all around honestly

I was gaslighted and bullied, mentally attacked and finally physically assaulted by my Neighbor on a regular basis for 8 full years including her sending male (and sometimes female) friends and ex boyfriends around to my door to make passive aggressive threats against me... I finally called the Police after her final unprovoked physical attack and they didn't arrest her despite her other Neighbor supporting me and talking to the Police about the situation explaining that she has also been engaging in Prostitution, illegally earning money whilst claiming Social Security Disability Benefits illegitimately for several years.
The Police did not arrest her. They were much more focused on her claim that a Facebook post made by a person that did not match my name and was months or even years old was referring to her. They did not arrest her for the illegal Prostitution or illegally earning a Salary whilst claiming free Social Security Benefits.
So I know for sure that it is not illegal to ruthlessly bully a person and it is not illegal to do any of the other things. People obviously are not aware of the real Law. I also wrongly believed that it is illegal to threaten somebody but now I know that it is okay to do so because the Woman would have been arrested and imprisoned if it were illegal.

I have a family member that has manic episodes. I only feel sadness about this situation. The complete powerlessness of those involved, and the tragic loss of life on all accounts. If the police could have done more, then i hope that they are properly held responsible for a situation that could have been prevented.

Same here! He apparently tried to hide out at my friend’s house just down the road from I used to live while he was on the run, but they ended up making him leave after just a little bit. I didn’t know him but apparently some of my old friends did. Police and Texas Rangers even ended up detaining my grandpa and searching his property because they knew Trey had been reported in the area and thought he may have been trying to hide out around there, and my grandpa’s property had a lot of places where he could’ve hidden.

He shot up a store he worked at then shot himself, Mr. Anime shot his entire family to death, mom, dad, brother, then considered shooting up a school but decided not to then was caught not too long after for the murder of his family after trying to hide at a friend's house but it didn't last long they I guess made him leave then he turned himself in or something.

When I was in a tough spot and became suicidal, even then I NEVER considered taking other people with me. That's just downright malicious.

He needed help but when you’re in that state of mind, it becomes even harder to see. I doubt he had much sway of his mental state in his last moments.
Mental illness is terrible; look at his comments section and you’ll see how sympathetic people are. He’ll forever be branded as a villain for something he couldn’t control, while people mock him and get praised for it.
The police just utterly failed in this scenario. If they had actually listened and detained him, none of this would have happened.

My heart hurts for everyone involved, having a love one go through a mental breakdown is so scary and the fact he's legally an adult makes it even harder for his parents to force him to get help.

You mean a car drove through a school fence, and no one called 911 right away? They had to wait until a white dude proved a danger before realizing he might be doing harm? He drove away specifically because he was confronted by someone. Calling the police and waiting their arrival instead of confronting a possible gunman is absolutely the right call. In fact, I find it far more telling that the teachers calling for gun control because of the danger to schools fails to see the danger of a car driving through a school fence. Either the teachers failed in their basic threat detection duty, or there isn't as much threat as these teachers claim. Why would you EVER appraoch a potential gunman like that?

I'm bipolar, McSkillet's actions scream that he was an undiagnosed bipolar. From the information presented here, it looks like the CS:GO skin crash caused him too much stress (we're very susceptible to stress), this pushed him into a negative manic state (manic states are a key indicator of bipolar, and these can last months). Without the medication to control the bipolar disorder, McSkillet was a ticking time bomb. I just wish he'd directed his negative emotions onto himself (most of us do) instead of doing anything to harm another.
Also, the comment about McSkillet felt bullets couldn't hurt him, yeah, that's pure bipolar mania. Damn, do I hate that feeling.
I don't think he was intending to hurt somebody. I think he was just in the midst of a breakdown and didn't realize what he was doing was inevitably going to hurt somebody. This by no means excuses what he did as two innocent lives were lost but some of the comments I've seen genuinely infuriate me as they're the reason people refuse help for mental illness. Maybe if they weren't so judgmental and idiotic things like this would happen less often.
I have bipolar disorder and this story is just so gut wrenching every time. Bipolar disorder is genetic but usually triggered in the late teens/early twenties when a big life event, good or bad, happens. This was probably his first ever manic episode, and he never really got the chance to get help. When you’re manic you think you’re invincible and consequences are sometimes just not something you can comprehend. I’m grateful I was able to get help young, to know the signs of my illness and take care of myself. He ruined his own life, the innocent passengers lives, and he probably didn’t even know it.
Don’t get me wrong, fault is fault. Not taking action when you’re being told your mental health doesn’t seem right is up to you. But so young. Geez.

Murder-suicide is just so grim to me. The state of mental health to make someone suicidal is already harsh, the state of mental health to make someone suicidal AND take other lives with them is unfathomable.

As someone who has a kid who has a mental illness, it can be extremely hard to get help for them. I was very lucky, weird to think of it as lucky but I was, that he was a minor when he was first diagnosed. We had some modicum of control and had him hospitalized. Once he turned 18, it's a whole different ballgame. Being a parent is irrelevant to the law and the person who is mentally ill has all of the control. As long as they say they're not going to self harm or harm others when they talk to Drs, there virtually nothing you can do
I’m so used to things like this happening because of drugs. The fact none were involved does make it seem like he had an episode. If it was just speeding down the road maybe that’s teenage stupidity, but ramming the school and his parents saying he was a danger is more than that to me.
on this way, the police & system surely failed him. I'm suffering from mental health problems myself, and luckily got the help i needed to the point that i'm on the right path, recovering pretty well from the problems. When he's suffering heavily and shows clear sign of unstable mental health that could harm himself or others, that should be enough for him to go to the hospital. Had the police actually stepped in, 3 people would have been saved.

18 is when mental illness tends to onset in young men, and it is often triggered by something. So, while the changes probably triggered the manic episode, it likely would have just been triggered at a later date.
I think the police saw the sports car, decided that it was just a kid having fun, and then completely disregarded all of the other evidence being presented by a literal psychiatrist.

My husband suffered a manic episode one day and I couldn't calm him down, I had to call 911 and asked them to please take him to the hospital but instead the police came and handcuffed him and threw him in jail and had him on s****** watch. I was so upset cuz he needed professional help that they didn't give him until the next day. Thankfully he's doing so much better now.
He didn't just ruin his life, he ruined every one else's lives that he hit that day. This is just so tragic and could've been prevented if the cops did what the parents said to do.

Strange that the police said they would get arrested if they detained him. Yet seem to get away with shooting people on a daily basis without any repercussions.

I have mad respect for the son. It takes a special kind of strength to show compassion for the person who wronged you as well as the person’s family, even if they might not deserve it. I think it’s important to strive to be that kind of person in one way or another. I definitely do, even if I’m pretty shit at it

Not even surprised the cops did nothing. Had to call cops on my ex going through a manic episode and they also did nothing. Hours prior he had engaged in threatening behaviour towards his former boss, trespassing on company property to do so. Cops said because they didn't see the behaviour they couldnt hold him.

I know this is an older video but this is still so tragic. 18yo is the age onset for many mental health issues, so it makes sense that a “trigger” event like losing money at this age with a not fully -developed brain paired with genetics leading to onset of mental health issues would lead into crisis. It’s absolutely tragic and horrifying that he took other ppls lives with his actions, but Im so appalled the police didn’t find his aggressive concerning. I’ve had friends who were 5150d for far far less than the warning signs he was exhibiting. Wishing both families peace and resolution, especially the victims appealing to the courts ❤

Through your own actions or lack thereof, if someone loses their life as a result and you were obligated to help them, you are responsible for their death. Those officers who refused to do anything until it was too late are responsible for the death of both McSkillet as well as the mother and child.

As someone who as attempted suicide, I feel deeply for all parties involved in this tragedy. Quite clearly he was having an episode of some sort, and was clearly not in a normal state of mind. I find it truly humbling that the son of the mother killed was able to see that through his grief - what a remarkable human.
As someone who's deal with 5150's... police fucked up. My mother never hurt anyone, nor intended to, just herself, yet we were able to provide sufficient statements to warrant the 5150 on 4 occasions. Sure, the first time is a bit harder, but the police did an honest assessment and "welfare check " to backup our statements. They had the ambulance there in 10min, after being realeased from the pschyc hospital the police would check on her because of neighbors calling. We showed them she was on treatment and wasn't a 5150 anymore and recovering fairly well. They just did a welfare check again and concluded everything was under control. And it was controlled at that point, so they just let her continue watching her movie and let her be.
For fcks sake, the dude was broken into pieces, the parents tried blocking him, calling for help, even the PSYCHIATRIST called them! That should have been enough! They don't need to harm someone! That's only if you want them arrested! They had everything for a 5150 and the idiots immediately went to "wE cAn'T aRrESst hiM cuZ hE diD nUtHiN wRoNg"! No, but you can detain him for a medical evaluation! And i must say, even the victims son was upset that the guy was going through this. 5150s are hell for the person going through it and for those around them. It only took my mom one day to break (although a lifetime of hardship) and she was a shell of herself for years, and after 10 years we're only beginning to see a glimpse of her former self.
