    Alan was a really nice bloke and invited me into his home in Scunthorpe to do the interview. He could have gone on for hours with great stories of the 70s and 80s football.

      @Daniel Lawson I was the same but met him twice. Once on a stadium tour and later at the special meeting for 1972 club ( I contributed funds to Don's statue so we were invited to meet the team). He recognised me from earlier that year and was just a friendly and very down to earth bloke. Always immaculately turned out as you can imagine. Spending a full afternoon with that team was something else.

      Even Clough in his autobiography recognized Allan Clarke in Cloughs opinion was the nicest guy at Leeds

    Probably the best forward in England back in the early 1970s

      Love watching Allan Clarke in his early 1970s pomp. So quick, so smooth, so composed. He LOOKED like a football hero, as well. And I'm a Liverpool supporter.

    Notice that Allan doesn't talk about his disastrous time in charge of Lincoln!

    I never asked Allan about his Lincoln days but I should have done a version about ex-players becoming managers. He did okay at Barnsley didn't he?

    Allan Clarke was idolised by many of us back in Lancs in the 70s ...and I mean idolised. Brilliant player.

      Allan was a great player and when I look back at some of his goals - which I did for research - you see how many needed skill and composure. He's not on TV enough.

      @@lesrowley1 I agree. All football books listing great finishers ignore him purely and simply because he played for Leeds. Some of his goals were almost artistic and he seemed to glide on the ball, arms outstretched, holding his cuffs. He could also pass the ball like a cultured midfielder. How he only played 19 times for England is a joke really as he scored 10 goals in those games, but Don was a bit reluctant to release him I believe. Allan is also a very nice bloke who has all the time in the world for the fans.

      @@stephenoldfield7124 I've interviewed a few footballers over the periods and Allan and allow you into their world of football. Stories he told were like the first time airings and you speak to him long enough and you can see behind their eyes the real love of football. I'm a @Lesrowley_

      @@lesrowley1 fantastic. I fon't think there has ever been a really deep biography on Allan and I'd love to write it one day ..or wish somebody would. I have the David Saffer book and Allan's books from the 70s, but he's never really been done justice. I agree on the seeing his love of the game. I could listen to this guy all day.

    Very talented player we all know that.
    The jibe against Rooney is ridiculous, just look at the honours.
    I think Allan Clarke is HUGELY bitter.

    • @lesrowley1
      @lesrowley1  Місяць тому

      I tend to agree with Michael. Allan Clarke had no reason to say what he did about Wayne Rooney, and the stats will show Rooney as a much better player. When I interviewed Allan, he earned most of his money doing after-dinner speaking engagements with Leeds fans. The audience wants a bit of partisan punditry, but as players once at the top of their game, there was respect there.

      He does not hang back when criticising Manchester United. He was a true gent inviting me into his home and great to get in front of the camera. Thanks for commenting on the programme.
