Death Songbook
Death Songbook with Brett Anderson, Charles Hazlewood, and Paraorchestra, and featuring special guests Nadine Shah, Adrian Utley (Portishead) & Seb Rochford (Pulled By Magnets, Acoustic Ladyland, Sons Of Kemet)
Brett Anderson, Charles Hazlewood, and Paraorchestra are joined by guest vocalist Nadine Shah in a one-off special performance of music by icons such as Echo and the Bunnymen, Skeeter Davis, Japan, David Bowie/Jacques Brel, and Suede. An exquisite songbook featuring delicate new versions of songs about death; the death of love and of loss, and transcendence.
This rich set - amplified by the diversity and virtuosity of Paraorchestra musicians in new arrangements by composer Charlotte Harding - was broadcast online by BBC Wales across the weekend of 6th - 7th March 2021 as part of GŴYL 2021 .
Thanks to the government’s Culture Recovery Fund Paraorchestra can continue to be #HereForCulture. We also give thanks for the continued support of our key funding partners, Arts Council England, The Mark Leonard Trust, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, and Bristol City Council.

(Am I the only one hoping for an audio release of this whole concert? Perhaps even on vinyl??)
hope you're happy now, took a while :)
This interpretation by Brett makes this song magic! So stunning and gorgeous! I love Brett sooooooo much!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Brett is such a good interpreter bc he sings with the guts, touching people's depths...🖤
5 years on and Colin is still being remembered. This is quite possibly the best cover version yet. Beautiful.
He signed my copy of the ‘Wonderful Life’ album and wrote ‘Have a wonderful life of your own, regards, Colin.’ I miss his honeyed voice.
I will always remember feeling down age 19 and my mother seeing me in a funk. She gave me £5 to put petrol in my vintage Triumph motorcycle and I rode into Camden Town with ‘I Just Grew Tired” ringing in my ears....
I miss my Ma dearly, too.
@@zacetto that’s so cool you got a signature and met him.
@@mrjelly5718
It was and I was very lucky to have done so, Mr Jolly - sorry……JELLY!!!!
Of course this hit is gonna be remembered... Even in our Ukraine.
@@zacetto Sorry for your loss. I saw Black at the International Garden Festival in Liverpool at a free concert on July 1st 1984 ( I only know the precise date because there is some footage of Western Promise on You Tube). This was a year before Wonderful Life was a hit. His death was tragic and very sad. I like a lot of his music and it was fitting that so many people attended the service for him at the Anglican Cathedral. My dad died out of the blue in a dreadful accident in 2020 so seeing the footage from the garden festival also reminds me of him because it is a day I remember well. I was not into gardens in those days but the event was a big deal in the regeneration of Liverpool. I hope you are doing well these days.
Mr. Anderson is perfect as always.
So missed Colin's voice. Thank you. Colin deserve a huge recognition to his work and beautiful mind.
Brett has always had an amazing voice
Being in this life with someone like Brett and his infinite talent, I am sure it is a wonderful life.
Spectacular version. Brett's celestial voice ... wonderful text for me. Despite the pandemic and other usual existential problems large and small I love a voice so singing a text like this reminds me instantly, shaking me all, that this is despite a wonderfull wonderfull Life! 👏😎❤🇬🇧✌🙏💪🌈
I'd like to hear him do a Sylvian or Japan song.
Beautiful. Absolutely stunning. It gave me goosebumps. 💎
I am mesmerised by the combination of my favorite song and my favorite singer. It's a wonderful life, thank you!
I deeply agree😊
RIP Colin Vearncombe
Wonderful life... with artists like these!
Incredibly beautiful. Literally everything brett touches turns to gold.
Great song also
Let’s not forget conductor Charles Hazlewood and arranger Charlotte Harding’s roles in this also. It wouldn’t sound half as good without the orchestration.
@@losttango I hear you, yet as a huge Brett Anderson and suede fan it’s hard for me to give them more than 20 percent credit on this. 80 goes to Brett. But after your comment I will
Consider upping that 20 percent
Amazing all around

A great rendition. Thinking about it, the song isn't unlike something Brett could have penned himself.

So hope Suede do a tour with this or any other orchestra
Wonferful !
Quality.
You know, I love the film composer, Billy Goldenberg, and he really inspires me luck. I’m a composer, and I am a composer I am also a vocalist arrange all my music and play numbers of instruments. I compose music on maybe 1000 instruments because there’s so many soundscapes and experimental music but this is not experimental this is really good. This video is really good but it’s not a composer we’re talking about why can’t we focus on composers? Why don’t we give more attention to composers instead of pop stars and entertainers? I do I get lots of attention to seriously interesting composers.
😍😍😍
Muitio legal, demias!
Loving you you are my life I'm your friend ❤
😅
😊WORLD WORLD WORLD..... 😮😢❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I sang this on kareoke once. Got a big laugh when I said “ladies and gentlemen..Toby Anstis on sax” I could never come up with a line like that these days. And my voice has gone to shit. Still. We soldier on
יפה!

@@jendavies334 AMAZING!! Thank you so much x
Brett is good, I love him, but Black is great.
On UK TV the other night.
He's not THAT guy as my Dad said of Billy Ocean/Paul McCartney.
But his faltering chewing comes at it from a different angle.
That's why people do covers ?
I didn't see any wheelchairs or wobbly bodies among these performers. Sorry to nitpick, but what has this got to do with the Paraorchestra?
Some disabilities you can't see.
Brett is white hair too.:-(( Older and older.
Everyone will age including you !
It just feels weak compared to Colin’s version.
the saxophone version was bad.
