- What Is the Greatest Regeneration Ever in Doctor Who? Since the show returned in 2005, there have been several that have equally brought good and bad elements to the table. It often depends on how you view the concept of regeneration, a staple of the show ever since William Hartnell departed the role.
Whether it be the 9th Doctor in the Parting of the Ways, the 10th Doctor in the End of Time, the 11th Doctor in The Time of the Doctor, the 12th Doctor in Twice Upon A Time and even the 8th Doctor in The Night of the Doctor and the War Doctor in The Day of the Doctor (sheesh, thats a lot of "Doctor"), all these regenerations offered something to offer in Who canon. Which regeneration garnered the best reaction out of me? Which one is the worst? Which one is the best regeneration ever?

@@caleb7551 Tracking ages. The doctor states his age multiple times, verbally. If you were to look at how old 9 claims to be and how old 11 claims to be, 10 couldn’t have been around for more than three years.

In defense of 11's regeneration and in favor of the Amy Pond appearance... I thought it was actually a really sweet idea to bring her back even as a figment of 11's imagination. Matt Smith's Doctor started out as Amelia Pond's imaginary friend, I think it was fantastic that his Doctor ended with Amy Pond playing an analogous role.
I agree, the figment of Amy in 11's mind seeing Amy one last time before he goes is important, as canonically We never got to see the first face that 9 saw, and technically Rose was 10's first face that he saw. Yet due to the fact of 10 was still with a companion of 9 it didn't feel as such an important thing, until 11 when he wasn't with any of his friends or companions and the literal first face he saw was a young Amelia.
Who of which during 11s run was a huge part of his life, from the first face, to her being impregnated by the Tardis, and being the mother of River Song who not only was a good mystery to the Doctor, but his wife. Which mind you makes Amy his Mother In-Law so yeah, 11 seeing his Mother In-Law one last time before he goes had a huge importance to his regeneration into 12.
Personally it's my favorite regeneration from the speech to the cameos, I loved every bit of it.

"I don't want to go" actually makes perfect sense when you consider the fact that 10 is the most selfish doctor. That being said, the most selfish doctor is still more selfless than most of humanity. He by far is the most human when it comes to his perception of himself. He doesn't want the responsibility of holding himself to a higher standard, he does it out of bitter acceptance. He vocalizes his self loathing through discontentment with the time lords actions and what he did during the time war. He wants to be human, he doesn't just appreciate humans and love them, he envies the simplicity. John Smith was a direct representation of how 10 would have acted if he was human. It's in his nature to despise his identity being overridden. Not only that, 10 had seen so many people sacrifice themselves to help him. He carrys the weight of knowing those people saved HIM. Not the next guy who's going to do the same. They wont recognize that strangers face. 10s first interaction with someone else was rejection because of the change.
Personally, I think it was a perfect end to that character. The most human time lord we know. The lonely god, just wanting to be more human.

From my interpretation, he seemed to see himself as a god above all else towards the end of his last season. 10 probably thought that 10 was the best doctor, hence why he left kicking and screaming.

Its important to understand that 10 II is not 10 I. The Doctor after the metacrisis is 10 reborn, and if you rewatch a few times you'll start to pick up on the subtle changes in himself, his personality, beliefs and convictions. The old 10th doctor would never have pulled what 10 II did in Waters of Mars. And it wasn't until the captain killed herself that The Doctor realized just how much he really had changed. 10 II is a slightly different doctor than the original 10th. More selfish, arrogant, narcissistic, and believing he is above and beyond the laws of space and time.
I think another thing to remeber about 10 is that he was only himself for about 3 years which is a lot shorter than any other doctor.
Nah, making Smith younger again was the right call, seeing someone that doesn’t really look like Smith regenerating wouldn’t have it the same, no way.
they should never have aged him like that in the first place, made the whole story feel less believable and weighty because it looked so silly

It's as The Doctor says: It's just his body resetting preparing him for regeneration....because after the 10th Doctor became space jesus in Last Of The Time Lords it's actually believable from a lore perspective
Plus, at least some of the audience will jump to the same wrong conclusion as Clara, that the Doctor was going to remain the same. That naturally leads into that great speech about change and treasuring past moments.

I think you missed the point of the 12ths speech and exit. He's speaking to the Doctor who is coming...and considering how "off" 12th was when he first regenerated and how much he grew over the course of his 3 series into such a well balanced man...it makes sense he'd say those things to himself so that that progress was not lost.
I like to think he was talking to Chibnall about how the doctor should act.

Not to mention it makes sense 12 would use his last words to speak to the coming doctor. His face was chosen as a message to himself, to hold him to the mark. Just save someone.
The "I don't wanna go" is a great example of a timelord getting too attached to who they are right now and I think it serves as a way to express the doctors love for what happened through his adventures as David Tennant by expressing a sentimental connection to a certain body because of what he's done in it
There’s a more in universe reason for “I don’t want to go” I think. 10’s regeneration canonically would be the Doctors last ever regeneration so his fear of essentially becoming a mortal is pretty understandable.
And he literally explained that it feels like death, maybe he still has his memories but he is not in control, it's as if you woke up and had to look trough your own eyes, yet the actions you do aren't your own. But no, hE's A LiTtLe BiTcH i GuEsS-
But then he starts to regenerate in The Impossible Astronaut? I know Moffat hadn’t introduced the War Doctor yet so was probably just a slip.
Also in-universe, Ten was the Doctor's shortest-lived incarnation, basically being around for four years compared to the centuries/millennia of the prior and subsequent Doctors (Eight for instance lived 800 years on a water planet as a hermit, for instance when in-between companions).
@@danmenard6917 @Dan Menard that was something I was thinking about, Ten says he was 903 on space cruise ship and 904 during the Day of the Doctor, and I think he was still in his 900s when Nine rolled around. The other doctors actually got to exist and live out their lives (however short), but Ten didn't

I think de-aging Smith for his regeneration is partly due to wanting the quick change to Capaldi to be more jarring.
Very good point. The fact that this theme was subsequently explored in Deep Breath gives this choice more credibility.

Well its also to keep things new and special rather than just a normal regeneration and for thr story side The Doctor had already released "all" his regeneration energy, his whole body became younger and new then his face was the last to change.
I would have liked it more if Capaldi was "the younger" Doctor after an aged Smith regenerated.

I actually really love Capaldi’s regeneration. He is probably the doctor who was the biggest fan of the show. It is really fitting that the doctor who truly loved the show exits by laying out all of the hallmarks of the character. And then, his last words aren’t spoken as 12 but as Capaldi leaving the role he always wanted.

While the word I would use is not imaginary friend, I agree with you. I considered Amy to be his compass for good. The scene where she says, "See, this is what happens when you travel alone for too long." has always been strong in my eyes, cause 11th was truly the incoming storm, and Amy was what stopped that storm most of the time, She and Rory was his family, the reminder to him about the good parts of humanity. So when he lost them it makes sense to me for him to still hear the words of Amy from time to time, reminding him to stay in his path, to not let fury consume him. And when she says "Goodnight." to him in his imagination, I think it was his hearth telling me he can stop fighting, he has done enough, he can let go of the facade of the happy man.
I actually quite like 12's big speech because it feels like he's reminding his next incarnation of the elements of being the Doctor that he had sort of forgotten and then rediscovered over his tenure.

There's something ironic about you saying that the Tenth Doctor's regeneration shouldn't hate the idea of change when you also admit he's the most human. I think the way he responds to the idea of change is perfectly fitting for the character. (Plus, there's the tidbit that his adventures were all in real-time so he literally lived hundreds of years less than the other Doctors). Fair play if it's not your favourite, but I think it absolutely reflects who that incarnation is.
And while it wasn't intended at the time, it would get recontextualized by Moffat as the last regeneration of The Doctor he'd ever have. Ten knew that this was it, the new man will be the last Time Lord ever. It makes him not wanting to regenerate make more sense
I personally love the 10th doctor's regeneration, because of the themes of it.
throughout his run, 10 had become arrogant over time, his explosion about how he could achieve "so much more" isn't far off from where he was mentally at the time. After he lost Rose, something changed in him, he wasn't the same. That being said, the speech he gave on Mars about how he's the last time lord, and that time was his to control shows that he had started moving away from the idea that he's simply earth's loyal protector, and that he was a god, the infamy and his own race fed an ego inside him that convinced him that he was the best there was, and was ever gonna be. He grew contempt at his inevitable change because he thought that he was the best that The Doctor was ever gonna be, someone inferior to him, and he didn't want his life taken away from him at what her perceived to be his prime.
The choice to make him alone during his death is one that I can respect, it's thematic. In the video it's stated he's the most human Doctor, and that's correct. He's the most compassionate and caring, and he's never let anyone die alone, not even his enemies. He held everyone in his arms in their final moments, and gave them compassion, empathy, and forgiveness so that they might rest peacefully. He did everything he could for everyone he encountered, and in his dying moments, instead of being repaid for the billions he'd saved, the countless people he held in their final moments, all the people who rest easier knowing that he was there when they needed him most, and the ones who died knowing that despite their shortcomings and mistakes that they were loved and forgiven, he had to die alone, with no one there to hold him as he died, no one to give him the same kindness that he gave to everyone. It's sad, and it hits me every time
The 11th doctor's acceptance and embrace of his end is the perfect juxtaposition to 10's. When 11 regenerated, it was a bittersweet moment. He remembered everything he went through with fondness, not sadness, the took off his bow tie and dropped it to the floor, signifying that it was his end, and he knew and accepted that. He gave a speech, about it being okay to change, as long as you remembered who you used to be, and I'd like to think it's because he remembered his resentment of his death as 10, and how utterly alone he felt when he did die, again, compared to Clara being there to give him company in his final moments before transforming again.

@@thekodex1186 Although I understand where you're you are coming from with your statement, I hope you understand that the 8th Doctor has had a great deal more stories and time to cement himself as an amazing Doctor, they simply aren't in a video format. If you really liked what you got from Night of the Doctor, might I suggest you check out his further audiobook adventures? Night of the Doctor was but a taste of Paul Mcgann's excellence as The Doctor.
John Hurt reached my top 5. The others are Matt Smith, David Tennant, Patrick Troughton and William Hartnell.
@Glitchgoat I just wish John Hurt had replaced Peter Capaldi in Seasons 8 and 9. The "Am I a good man?" arc needed a better actor and Hurt fit the bill. He showed Capaldi how it's done in Day of the Doctor alone. The aspect of Hurt's performance that really sold it was his self-awareness and constant questioning of his own morality. Capaldi had no self-awareness at all in Season 8, so he failed to convey that his Doctor was doing any soul searching, instead just showing a man who was making excuses for his shitty behaviour.
Seasons 8 and 9 could have been the greatest era in New Who, perhaps even the greatest in Doctor Who period, if Peter Capaldi hadn't disgraced his childhood hero in his first season. I felt like I was watching the Valeyard while John Hurt, despite playing the one Doctor who could actually get away with acting like the Valeyard, never gave that vibe. If I were the Doctor, I'd be far more ashamed of having Capaldi in my regeneration cycle. To be fair, he managed to repair the damage in Season 9 and even I can admit that he was firing on all cylinders in Heaven Sent, Hell Bent and The Husbands of River Song but it took him WAY too long to reach that point. For goodness sake, Matt Smith is 25 years younger, wasn't a fan until he actually joined the show AND had weaker writing, yet he nailed the Doctor in his very first episode and continued to pull off every single script he was handed.
If Peter Capaldi had done Day of the Doctor, where he could afford to go full Valeyard without it being out of place, we could have seen Jenna Coleman and John Hurt sharing two seasons together instead of just a handful of scenes. They would have made them as close to a perfect pair of seasons as one could get. My only concern is that Hurt might not have lived long enough to finish them.

Eccleston's regeneration honestly makes me cry. Personally, I think this is because he's been living with the guilt of what he did in the Time War all that time, but he finally seems to be taking a step towards forgiving himself with the line: "You were fantastic... and you know what? So was I."
Was thinking the exact same thing.
I never thought Eccleston/9 was the one in the time war. He just regenerated before meeting Rose. he still carried the heavy memories of it.

The Twelfth’s speech always felt like a grandfather trying to help his grandchild on their way. He wanted to send them off with a better grasp of what being the Doctor meant. Eleven trusted Twelve to make his own decisions, Twelve wants to make sure Thirteen gets it right. “Never ever eat pears!” Is like being told “don’t take any wooden nickels” or something like that. Its a quick joke from a madman in a box. And the ultimate hoy of it is him saying “Doctor, I let you go”. Because it once again feels like the grandfather letting the grandchild out in the world with the wisdom he had to get from experience. It also turns the TARDIS dialogue into a double meaning. He knows that the new Doctor will get it wrong without this piece of advice just as the TARDIS said everyone would do it wrong without a Doctor. And more than that he could never let the one lesson he learned in his tenure: Just be kind.

Capaldi’s final speech was really important to the plot. He’s the one that HAS lived too long. He wants to be allowed to die. He knows what regeneration is, he doesn’t fear it, like the others. It wouldn’t make sense for him to then just change his mind right after explaining why he didn’t want to. If it just included “doctor, I release you” it would cheapen the story, and make it seem like Capaldi was clinging to being the doctor even though his reasons were explicitly not about that.
I think 10th’s regeneration works in the context of the whole two-parter. I never thought of him as “whining”. He has the right to be upset he’s going to die. And he ultimately made the choice to die. He didn’t have to sacrifice himself for Wilfred, but he did because he’s The Doctor. Hence, “Wilfred, it’s my honor.” I love 10 and his regeneration. Such an iconic scene.
I really loved the whole arc of 12th just refusing to regenerate, his acting is so fantastic and you truly get the feeling that this man is just tired, worn out, he doesn't wanna do it anymore. "I will not change. How long can I keep doing this? Losing the old me, I don't want to change again. NEVER AGAIN" oh my god man, peter capaldi he is such a fantastic doctor, the pain behind his words get me everytime.

He was a great doctor. At first I thought Capaldi was meh. But, after watching more of his episodes, he is such a great doctor - especially when it's an emotional scene.
I actually hated his final speech, the writing of it was so weak and unmoving and felt more like they were drawing out the scene than Matt Smith's which was so beautiful, emotional and fitting.
@Hot Rod No it really wasn't it just came off as a drawn out speech since Matt Smith had one last time so must Calpaldi, it would have been better if the last speech was the "My life is a battlefield" speech to Bill and then he goes into the Tardis, maybe says "Doctor I let you go" then regenerates.
I'm always going to be a bit bitter we didn't get at least one more season with Capaldi as the doctor.

It makes sense in that regard, but in-universe, not so much.
Smith had the best dialogue before he regenerated. "we're all different people, throughout our lives...".
I only wish Rory had appeared with Amy in that scene.

Rory was Ami's companion, much more then the Doctor's.
The Doctor wants to be with Ami, but Ami wants to be with Rory, so the Doctor has to accept Rori's presence.
He didn't have any real reason to particularly remember Rori at that moment.

Or stay with his wife for 2000 years wondering if she could really come back to life? Or have the audacity to bash the doctor for making him choose between one version of his wife or another? Or have put so much trust in his wife that he'd be willing to let her resuscitate him? Or how about even going so far as to willingly try to kill himself just so his wife and daughter wouldn't be zapped back in time?

@@ibtunesoriginals2629 he actually bashed her for it in Amy's choice. But he never caused it to sour the relationship or his love for her. To alter a quote from twelve, "do you think he cares for her so little that betraying him would make a difference?"
i don't get people who dislike twelve's regeneration. i personally find it touching
Tbf Tennant in the End of Time is very in character. He wants to be human so bad, he likely took on that self preservation instinct from Family of Blood. It's got bit more in common with 12's regen, he's fine dying in battle but he just wants to be mortal. That said what urks me is that isn't treated like a character flaw.
As for Smith, seeing Amy again, I took as him forgiving himself for letting her down when she was a kid. It was her/him saying to himself "you stayed this time, you saved all those children, you can rest"
As for Capaldi don't love it but him being a teacher, talking to just himself, it's nothing but 12. And I love the idea of a regen story as an epilogue, I love the Dr Falls largely because it wasn't the final story, things continuing unnaturally is the source of horror (e.g Cybermen).

I really like you're explanation for Eleven seeing Amy again. One explanation I heard that I really liked was that her saying 'goodnight' to him just before he regenerated was finishing the 'fairytale'.
Eleven and Amy's adventures had always been alluded to as being like a fairytale - Moffat himself calls their first season a fairytale, Amelia Pond is "like a name from a fairytale", the Doctor treats their adventures like a bedtime story at the end of The Big Bang. Fairytales are traditionally bedtime stories and they end with 'goodnight'.

Apparently in another country, when it translates to english he says 'fantastic'. I have a feeling it might be in Germany, but I'm not entirely sure

say what you want about 4th-wall breaks but I absolutely loved 11's moment when he looks at us and says "I will always remember when the doctor was me". I think it's really fitting for his character and I think it being a mix of the doctor saying it as well as Matt really works

Ithink tenths doctor’s line : “I don’t want to go” actually is brilliant! it Sums up the humane characteristics of Tenth doctor, he is emotional so it’s natural that the regeneration would be harder for him and he was the only emotional doctor, he was almost sure he’ll loose all these feelings, the love he felt, the hurts and everything cause this was the only time he could understand emotions so well... you always feel pain when you remember lost loves at the same time you don’t want to let anything to take them away... doctor is right after the 10th regeneration other doctors don’t even tap to memories of Rose but tenth doctor care about all companions even Sarah from previous regenerations.
The twelfth Doctor speak is at least for me one of the best doctor who’s scenes. People all the time talk to themselves when they want to remind themselves of important things, we write to our selves in our diaries. I find the speech so powerful and for once you feel the doctor is talking to you and you are with him instead of seeing things through the eyes of the companions.
Yeah this was definilty a major point I disagreed with in this analysis. I mean you should treat regeneration as a certain form of death for the character because even though the doctor lives on with all of his memories, he fundamentally changes his view on life and its meaning with every change of face. I feel like the reason the master and rivers regenerations are different is because of what they are fighting for and where in their lives they find themselves. I mean for the master it doesn't matter who he is as long as he's against/with the doctor and I mean we see huge changes in personality between each regeneration (same goals tho like the doctor) and river didn't live long enough to see the changes or didn't think about them before losing her power. So to just say that the doctor is mearly "growing up" is definitely wrong and something much more meaningful happens when one of his faces hands the down the mantle to the next

He changes his personality and general outlook on life, but from what we can tell he still retains his consciousness (that's obviously an assumption, but to assume he doesn't yet still can access his memories and emotions regarding characters is a bit odd). I mean, I get that he's dying after the canonical shortest incarnation and that he's MORE emotional than the others, but he still is a being centuries old and has seen billions of people live and die, so I think the vid was more speaking to the extent to which he mourns than the actual mourning itself. I personally liked the concept of the 10th Doctor's reluctance to regenerate but also was a bit tired of how long it was dragged on for what amounted to a bunch of nostalgia bait. That's why I like the more mature regeneration scenes.
i always felt, that it's RTD's tribute...he also didn't want to go, as Tennant...so that line makes sense also from that way....they both decided to move on, but their hearts were with Doctor Who..it was RTD saying goodbye to his favorite child with Tenth, who was visiting his old friends, that we never saw after that (except Jack)
I personally like to think that 10th not wanting to change was contributed by the fact he knew he had only one regeneration left in him and after he turned to the 11th Doctor he didn't have any regeneration left

Pretty sure the current writer, Chris Chibnall, has possibly shattered canon. By introducing the "Timeless Child", a child the Timelords at the time discovered who had the ability to regenerate over and over again. The entire episode tries to make us believe The Doctor is that Timeless Child. Meaning the original 1-13, weren't the original. So unless Chibnall fixes this or a different writer fixes this, the canon is current jumbled.
Although the Timeless Child could kinda fit. In the 11th's run, there's an episode in a Hotel where the episode monster was a Minotaur-like Alien, at the end the monster dies, and The Doctor translates its last words, in my rough memory "A creature from the dawn of time...." The Doctor thought the Minotaur alien was talking about itself, but it wasn't, it was The Doctor. So being The Timeless Child, could mean The Doctor has been around since the Dawn of Time.....idk, my head hurts, it's all crazy.

Matt Smith’s send off regeneration was absolutely perfect in my opinion. I loved seeing Amy at the end even though it was just apart of the tardis interface. His speech is just perfect as well, and the music, 10/10 regeneration for a 10/10 doctor.
Amy was a hallucination. If she was a projection from the TARDIS, Clara would have been able to see her.
11 being young was the right call. Him destroying the Daleks with the regeneration energy was a great moment. So you either have Capaldi pick up from that point (which means we lose his speech which I love) or you show that the regeneration had a physical effect on him by making him young again. It works
I don't get why he had a problem with him being young again for two reasons
1. The 11th being old then young showed that his soul is still old, despite him having a young body, a theme for every doctor
2. Tennant healed when he started regenerating, showing that they go back to a previous state just before regenerating
Killing the daleks like that was cool but it seemed like it was done that way because time was running short. That special feels twice as long as it is, even with the appropriate pacing they crammed alot of plot and information into that thing, that fact is also kinda impressive thinking on it now
I have my separate opinions on 10’s regeneration. He is the most human version of the doctor and it would make sense that he is the one who is the most upset about regeneration. Sure after regeneration you’re still the same person but your entire personality is gone. I understand your problems with that since it was unfair to Moffat and Smith who were already under a lot of pressure but I personally like the idea of a doctor being more scared of regenerating. That’s just my two cents anyway.
Also “I don’t want to go” is the opposite of 10’s catchphrase “ allons y”. I found that to be a nice touch.
I am not a huge fan of 10's regeneration. A regeneration episode is meant to herald a new beginning for the show, excite viewers for what's to come with the new doctor, and just make them feel comfortable and at ease with what's going to happen. Unfortunately, instead, The End of Time wastes most of it's energy on making you feel sad that 10 and RTD are leaving in the first place. 10's farewell tour would have been more appropriate for a series finale overall, but we all know it's going to end happily with him regenerating into Matt Smith. Why make the audience feel sad and inevitably alienate them from Moffat and Smith rather than making them excited for a new era?

David Tennant and Rtd was the golden age of doctor who and it *was* uniquely sad when it ended. Giving both of them a tearful send of sits just fine with me. There's also canonical reasons, 10 had a fucken rough life, and it only lasted 4 years. Couple that with the belief that this was his last regeneration and again, makes sense to me. Was it a middle finger to Moffat? Yeah kinda, but as someone with absolutely no love for Moffat I don't really care.

People kind of overlook Ten's vanity and self-absorption, but it's very much part of his character. His series-3 moping over Rose. The time-meddling arrogance of the Waters of Mars. His treatment of John Smith in Human Nature. The temper tantrum in End of Time was in character.
Whether that makes it a good artistic choice is a different question.

When 10 realises the consequences if he saves Wilf, I'd have him look back and forth, till he eventually breaks down in tears saying; "I know what I must do, and I always do it, but I'm not sure if I can bring myself to do it this time". A quieter moment that will show 10's fear in a more subtle way than "I CAN DO SO MUCH MORE!".
I'd then change 10's farewell tour to being less like it's the end of the entire show, to just simply being a short montage of adventures The Doctor has with his companions for one final time each. I'd cut out the scene where he stalks Rose on New Years Day 2005 as that wasn't needed. The montage would show 10 having some final moments of happiness, having brought closure to prior unsolved issues, before returning to the TARDIS to regenerate and saying his last words; "Allonsy!" as he regenerates on a more triumphant note to herald a new beginning
I think the fact that Tenant’s Doctor canonically lived a lot shorter than other incarnations (10 only lived for less than a decade while 11 got to run around for hundreds of years) lends some credit to his sad boi regeneration. YMMV
Also unlike the others he was closest to being human, if lets say we were told tomorrow we are going to "die" and be "reborn" in a new body with a different mind i think we would act somewhat the same to Ten.

I love 10’s reaction to regenerating. I mean by this point he’s done it so many times that he has had many personalities. And this doctor has had the most human connections too. When he changes he knows that he won’t love the same people. All the friendships he’s made will end. 11 won’t have the same connections with these people he does and so in a way his life is ending. And the fact that we actually see a doctor react to this change gives him a lot of humanity. He’s not just sad his gface will change, he’s sad that the person he is will change and in doing so he will lose all of his current relationships
I always loved the idea of the Any hallucination simply because she was 'the first face this face saw' and he kind of wanted her to be 'the last face this face saw'
He was her imaginary friend, she was his in the end

Strong disagree with Amy's cameo. Amy has such a huge impact on the 11th Doctor, as he says himself, her was the first face his face saw. It makes sense that, on the cusp on regenerating, of changing his face, he'd think back to who is probably the most important person to him in this form. It shows that even after hundreds of years, he still carries Amy with him.

Interesting take on 10th's regereration, though I must say that I can't agree at all. His flawed, much more humanlike nature is what makes him one, if not, the best doctor to me. His vanity, his fear of change, it's all the scenes where the Doctor has been selfish and his worst that built up to the point of him saying that line. I personally love that Tennant's sadness about leaving the show can be felt in the scene. For me, it elevates on 10th's inner conflict that stands at the centre of his character: His alienlike side that tends to fall into arrogance and a feeling of superiority, but also his empathetic, human side, the side that fell in love with Rose.
This scene and this line work perfectly for me, since the viewer knows that the doctor already knows it better when saying those words. He knows that it's foolish of him to whine about loosing his existance as the person he is after all the things, the humans around him just as John Smith had to endure. He realized that thats why he can't ever fully be like a human, which leads to 11, that is again far more alien than 10 was.
Completely agree. Seeing The Doctor be so... so human is amazing. Seeing him be so SCARED of death just like us is heartbreaking... and it's amazing. It's one of, if not, my favorite regeneration scenes ever. I love his solid grasp on his life and not wanting to let go just as much as I love 11ths somber farewell. And it's just like real life. Not everyone wants to die, and not everyone dies happy. And that was ten in a nutshell and what made his regeneration so amazing. It was human.

The thing that bothers me with the videos is how he kind of goes against it later when talking about the war doctor “the sense of lost time” and then shows how 9 was talking as if he was going to die and not see rose again and all the things he wanted to do. It just kinda seems inconsistent
I can't agree at all, I've always disliked the 10th Doctors regeneration. But I realize my opinion is largely influenced by factors outside of the show. After discovering Doctor Who as a kid, I soon began watching Classic Who as well. So to me the idea of regeneration and new actors taking on the part was nothing unusual, in fact it was ridiculously exciting! I think because Eccleston regenerated so soon, I didn't really have the chance to experience the shock of losing 'my' Doctor, so regeneration was a concept I looked forward to.
The issue is, as Full Fat said, that almost everyone around me immediately dropped the show after Tennant left. I remember how hotly discussed his departure was, tons of people saying they weren't sure if they would continue watching. The minute I heard the words "I don't wanna go", even as a kid, my heart sank. It felt like they had just jeopardized Matt Smith's entire introduction. People weren't going to be embracing the excitement of a new Doctor, they'd be fawning over the tragic loss of the last. And so basically everyone around me dropped the show, and never gave Matt Smith a chance.
That being said, I can appreciate it from the character's perspective, and your arguments are strong. I just don't think it will ever sit right with me.
@@JackWolf10 I totally understand that. I didn't get a chance to experience classic Who yet, in fact I found the show pretty late, somewhere around when Smith already had his second season running. So, while I haven't experienced Tennant's departure when it was airing, I know how much it has shaken the community. It's sad that narrowminded people like this drop a show just because of an actor change, but to me, those just aren't fans of the show. I for myself hate the current run of Doctor Who, but I watch it anyway, because a show that I love always deserves a chance.

Personally, I loved the idea of regeneration being truly like dying. Not only does it add more tension to every episode (Doctor has something to actually lose if he is hurt) but also because each new Doctor does feel completely different. Matt Smith really was a different person entirely to David Tennant. Plus the Doctor at the time had been growing a god complex and thought himself to be some sort of demigod
The problem is, people hated Matt Smith more than any other actor to take the role before series 5 aired, all because RTD had Ten going around saying he'll die and a new man will go 'sauntering away'

Matt Smith’s Doctor was an old soul in a young man’s body, and he failed to capture that. When you compare his ability to show emotions with any of the other actors portraying the Doctor (in NuWho), he falls very short of the Mark.
We see Eccleston’s range in sorrow, when telling how he is the last of his kind, through to his utter hatred of the Daleks (in Dalek). We see Tennant’s range from being hopeless as a human (Family of Blood), through to his god complex, in Waters of Mars, back to sorrow, with “I don’t want to go!” He took over the room in just about every scene. His comedic timing was also brilliant.
Then we have Matt Smith. His two biggest emotional scenes were in the “Rings of Akatan”, and “The Pandorical Opens” - I probably don’t have the episode names right, but you know the ones I mean, hopefully. There was no gravitas. These were supposed to be emotionally charged speeches, but they came off as a student delivering his lines in a bad school play. I felt none of the emotions I should have during these speeches, whereas Eccleston and Tennant had both been able to move me to tears. I think he was probably too inexperienced, at the time, to take on the role.
There is also the scene in “The Beast Below”, where the Doctor is supposed to be seething with rage, and conflicted, over having to lobotomise the whale, and changing his name, as he could no longer call himself “The Doctor”, after doing this. He came across as a petulant child, having a tantrum, rather than a man faced with an impossible decision...
He was just unable to carry off the role convincingly - in my opinion, of course.
I have to add, Capaldi was a Master (see what I did, there? :) ) of emotional speeches (except, perhaps, for the somewhat cringy final speech he gave, before regenerating). His speeches on being in a war far greater than the little tussle with the Zygons, being kind, because it was right, with the two Masters, and even his monologue about the bird sharpening its beak on the diamond every 200 years, are the stuff of legend.

I actually love the fact that tenth says "I don't wanna go" he was the proudest, the most human, the most vain doctor of the new era. Him not wanting to go shows all of that bc unlike the others who accept their fate of regeneration (except 12th) he in particular tried to fight it. That and Tennant was a lifelong fan and his favorite role to play. And being alone in his final moments except the songs of the ood he helped liberate is fitting. Comforted by the ppl he's saved but none of his family.
And I think Ood Sigma's words are the most important. This song is ending but the story never ends.

I haven't seen much of Colin Baker but from what I have seen, he was very underrated. To be fair, he had to step into the shoes of powerhouses like William Hartnell, the first Doctor (fuck Chinballs' Timeless Child bullshit), Patrick Troughton, the Doctor who ensured that the show could continue without Hartnell, and Tom Baker, the longest serving Doctor who was also the most popular until David Tennant took the role.
One of the best and greatest regeneration 5th to 6th way better than NuWho golden light which is a predictable as a Westlife chord change progression. Yes Classic Who had fade aways but it was the build up - not long monologues of dribble seen in NuWho be it Tennant didn't do this. The 3rd Doctor actually dies but needs help to regenerate be it that part I'm not a fan off, but the 3rd dying is moving and touching.

I understand where you're coming from with 12's regeneration and I would also have liked to see a more "quiet" regeneration for him. Having said this, I do like his speech because it isn't about him. 9's speech was about himself "You were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And you know what? So was I". 10's last line was about himself "I don't want to go" If that isn't vanity issues I don't know what is. And 11's last line was about himself "I will always remember when the Doctor was me." But with 12 it's different. It's not about him, it's about who he's going to be. It's a message for 13, a message that I think 12 would've wanted 11 to give him.

I loved Whittakers performance but the way the character was written made her feel like she never quite understood who she was. Even though I think that was intended to be somewhat the point of the character, just could have been handled a bit better.
Even more so given that 12th face was a deliberate choice of his past self reminding him on what does it mean to be a "doctor". He's passing the message on, lecturing, like he always did in his runtime. 12 really became my fav as time goes on

I think it's a great speech, just cut out the section about children and its a solid speech, holding the next doctor to a standard.
I also feel like the s10 finale helped make twice upon a time even better. It all built to him deciding to keep going.

I read a fan theory sometime ago that the death of ten’s john smith persona is the reason he was so afraid of regenerating, he was able to undergo the feeling of human death and he was afraid to go through that again
At the same time, to Ten is that this is the last regeneration he will ever had. He knew 11 would be the final incarnation, so to him regenerating one last time is his realization of his mortality. Because he always made it through, but now to him, he is now closer to the end than ever before. He never knew that the Time Lords would give him twelve new regenerations to be able to go to twenty-three numbered incarnation as since The War Doctor was really Nine, Nine is Ten, Ten is Eleven, and Eleven being Twelve. Yet since The War Doctor was considered to be THE DOCTOR he wasn't numbered in his mind.

I love the line “I don’t wanna go.” Regardless of weather you like it, it was delivered perfectly. There was so much emotion in it. I think it fits David’s character, he seems very nostalgic, not wanting to let go of the past. Maybe it’s cuz I’m also very nostalgic, but I just feel like it was the perfect end for him. But when he changed, he became a new person. A person that isn’t the same nostalgic person, and he didn’t feel the same (which fits his line “times change, and so must I” cuz he isn’t kept in the past, he’s ready to move on).
i actually think it fits as well when you look at how Matts doctor talked about how he just moves on and we all changes in our lives.
it's like someone leaveing highschool or some similar lifechanging event. he's not ready for his next stage of life. he wants just a bit more time in his current state. and it's not that he's going to not move on. but he is griveing over it being over.
I always love Smith's regeneration speech. It hit me in the right spot. Him talking about how people change and being different people through life and moving forward but also remembering who you were before. It hit me in the right spot and still does. That episode came at a time for me where my life was falling apart. I was 15. My parents had split up, my brother had just come out of hospital after being ill and I had just finished struggling through mock exams. Smith's speech just hit the right note for me. It came to me at a moment in my life when I needed that speech. There was something hopeful in it and reflective and even now in my life it gets me. I can relate to it so much and as we all change and grow and become new people that speech continues to be relevant. It has a place in my heart and always will.
Wow man...its crazy how much this show means to so many different people. I don't know of any show quite like it.
I was about to enter my first year of High School and Matt Smith, connected true to me...Him being my Doctor, and it felt like (intentionally) I was entering a near stage of Life in Everything, I was doing!!!

That age where you are trying to find who you are and you worry about being cool and popular and you try to fit in and stuff and i just connected with his Doctor. He was quirky and dorky and awkward and that spoke to me. I wasn't cool and sleek and smooth. I was a dorky awkward kid. I was nerdy and a bit bonkers. It was just seeing a character that was so unabashedly themselves that i connected with Smith's Doctor didn't care about looking cool or if people though he was weird or looked at him funny. He danced through life to his own tune. I needed that in my life. That is why Smith is my fave Doctor. He was the champion of the underdogs. The dorky awkward misfit. The square peg in the round hole. The mad man with the box. And at that time my hero.

@@McKildafor thats the power some forms of media have. Smith's incarnation came at an important time in my life. I was 12 when he started. I was just hitting my teen years. I was battling through high school, getting bullied, not fitting in, wanting friends and trying to be cool and popular. There he was. The mad man with his box. The dorky awkward misfit dancing through life to his own tune. Not caring if people find hi weird. Fully embracing his eccentricities and little quirks and never being ashamed of them. It was liberating seeing someone just be like that. And then his regeneration speech came at a time in my life where i really needed The Doctor. My life as i knew it was falling apart. My parents had split, my dad had moved out, my big brother who is meant to look after me and support me and be my rock was suddenly weak and ill and had just come out of hospital and was walking with a stick. And on top of all that i had to deal with my mock exams. That speech teuly moved me. I remember just sitting on the sofa with my mum on Xmas day and i just wept in that moment during that speech. It just touched my heart. I needed it. A little moment of hope and optimism and reflection. Yet again my Doctor saved the day. That is why Smith is and always will be my fave Doctor.
Loved everything about tens regeneration. I think a big part of the pain of that doctor regenerating meant he had to say goodbye to that part of his life and those companions and friends he made in a way and he didn’t want to accept that. Him seeing Rose the woman he loved was poetic and beautiful the first face he saw was the last he saw.
I like the fact that each incarnation sees regeneration differently. He's the same, but in order for him to grow a part of him has to change, and for 10 that prospect was scary. Even 2 to 3 (though it was the classic era) showed that some incarnations would prefer not to be changed.
For me, the Twelfth Doctor was given the best regeneration to date. It felt like the antithesis of Ten's regeneration with the Doctor; Capaldi's Doctor was one who went through a lot and lost important people to him along the way. He loses Danny, Clara, River, Nardole, Bill and even Missy to an extent. It doesn't matter if he does get his memories of Clara back, she's still dead and he will never see her again. He went into his final battle in The Doctor Falls knowing he's going to die, and at the end of the episode, having lost so much is ready to just give up and rest in peace for good ("Can't I have peace? Can't I rest?"). It's then in Twice Upon a Time that he realises that the universe still needs him and that there's a reason to carry on living. His final words felt like the perfect parting message, acknowledging the past while looking to the future, accepting change and feeling content with it ( "Doctor, I let you go."). For me, World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls and Twice Upon a Time was the perfect swansong for a Doctor yet.
I fully agree, I love the idea that after all the pain the doctor has to experience, knowing his friends die, failing to help his oldest friend, and then going into a battle he knows he can't win, when he really does want to give up he meets his original self who helps him come to terms with who he is, and then because of that he has the strength to tell his next self how to be better than himself.
I think they should legit have stopped thesjow there for a couple decades...
In addition, Capaldi gave some of the best monologues and often did just talk to himself. This felt very in character for him and for the actor.
Except Clara isn't dead, she's roaming the universe in a TARDIS and arguably he's known what she looks like since Hell Bent from the picture on the TARDIS

I find that a lot with these critical analysiss (analyi? Anali?) that they are over critical of scenes that are mor effective than they like to admit because it doesn’t always tick every boxes when you put it under the microscope, but when you actually experience the scene without this critical mindset they can be much better.

The third doctor’s regeneration is probably my favourite. Pertwee’s weakened, frail yet oddly calm line delivery really sells the moment as it’s such a stark contrast to his usual outspoken, lively and argumentative demeanour, and he passes away mid sentence which is pretty shocking and realistic. The lack of music also helps to punctuate the moment and it gives the whole scene a cold and deathly tone.
Lis Sladen’s teary eyed performance is also pitch perfect and the Brigadier’s nonchalant “Well, here we go again,” at the end is just the cherry on top.
I'd say the difference between how the tenth doctor felt about regeneration compared to River and the Master is because compared to them he's ancient; River was a bit over 20 years old before we see her regenerate for the like the third time and the Master has more regenerations left than the Doctor, considering that the Doctor thought he was going into his last regeneration
Yeah and to add on from that, the master saw his regeneration as a way to triumph , and River probably saw her regenerations as a really cool trick, because at this point she is very young and hasn’t had the experience to understand the pain of changing who she is, as she was trained, to kill the doctor and that is her sole purpose, until she regenerates into Alex Kingston’s body
I'm pretty sure the Master is convinced he's immortal anyway. He's run out of regenerations and cheated death so many times.
I think the tantrums fit, the 10th Doctor was becoming increasingly arrogant and almost power hungry by the end. If you look at the Waters of Mars episode it shows him thinking that he could be the God of time. He had grown far too attached to this persona which is why he needed to change or evolve even into the 11th Doctor. Just to lob in an overused Dark Knight quote: "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to become the villain".
Really interesting point. I'm not sure how well that theme was tied into Smith's doctor as he does also get very "I am a god"! on us. I mean personally, I think that doctor who in general doesn't make enough mistakes and doesn't have enough flaws, particularly with Jodie Whittaker.
@RhuariTheWolf Well at first yes, Christopher Eccleston was struggling to recover from war and he was at times rude and very condescending towards humans which made him so much more fascinating to watch. David Tennant had fewer flaws but still some with his inner conflict that he couldn't save everyone but after that, I struggle to pick out any flaws. Questionable fashion choice is the only thing that I can think of. And in the episodes that I have watched Jodie is always right and never makes a mistake. What do you think the flaws are?
I wish the narrative had actually addressed this more. I LOVE the whole "Time Lord Victorious" motif but it feels so wasted
@@patrickbourne3819 13 has flaws it's just a lot of time the episodes don't address them. She's very stubborn the opening third of Tauranga shows that with her quarreling with the medic on the ship. I've also noticed she relies on tech way too much, Can You Hear Me uses her affinity with tech to trick her, in Ascension she tries to deal with Cybermen uses tech, it fails and she spends the rest of the episode on the backfoot

I don't have a problem with the whole 'i don't want to go' and death vibe of the end of time, I really like it actually. I've always loved the whole angle of regeneration being like death, I'd even say it makes the ending speech of 11 and 12 even better as its them putting a brave face to Clara. While 10 was alone, he didn't have to hide his true feelings and fears but was also consumed by them

So personally I love Capaldi’s regeneration because of him monologuing. I get the points made in this video but I feel like him talking to the Tardis/himself fits and works for his character really well. I’ve always seen Capaldi’s doctor as ‘the one that talks a lot’ and his scenes at the beginning of ‘Listen’ and ‘Before the Flood’ help show that this character enjoys speaking out loud to himself and he does so during his regeneration. I also enjoy the fact that he talks about a few random stuff like ‘never eat pears’ because again, he’s ‘the one that talks a lot’ and him just rambling on about stuff that has nothing to do with anything just works. Just my opinion tho and I still respect and understand what was mentioned in the video.
I loved both 11 & 12's regenerations. 11 was reminding Clara that, even though you may change throughout life, you can always remember and grow from who and what you were. 12 was reminding himself, or i guess in this case, herself (?) how to be the doctor. He said to 13 "Laugh Hard. Run Fast. Be Kind." because those are his tenants as The Doctor. Its who and what the character is.

The ray effects were my only complaint, they looked rough but the body melding and changing effect was well done I agree.
I think now in hindsight the retconning of 10 -> 11 being his last regeneration makes the whole fear of regeneration make more sense, knowing it was his last and considering how short his current body had lived.
Obviously that's not what they planned at the time I do still kind of hate the whole brooding about it but that little bit of headcanon makes it more bareable to watch
I don't want to go is one of the best character moments and human moments the doctor has ever had. People might take the wrong idea of this, outside of the importance to the character, but this is a moment where the doctor gets to be selfish for once in his life while he's alone instead of having to be brave for everyone around him. He deserved that line.
"I don't wanna go" breaks my heart every time I watch it, and I don't care if you don't like it.

12’s regeneration speech is my favorite. 12 was the big speech doctor and I appreciated that ending for him.
My favorite was from Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi (though it was so weird) because one of my best friends (who I loved as a big brother) that looked like him had passed away and that scene of him trying to comfort Clara and explaining that change is not a bad thing actually helped me a lot dealing with my grief.

I also liked Clara’s return while anticlimactic as a sort of last ditch effort from the testimony and hence Bill & Nardole to convince 12 to regenerate. I feel until that point 12 still had made his mind not to regenerate.
Nah you missed on 12th’s speech. 12th is leaving a message for the future. Its a speech which captures the gravitas of his doctor and accentuates the lessons he learns. He goes through so much development that it feels earned.

One of my greatest fears is change. That's why I feel the "I don't wanna go" line so much. Tenth is afraid of changing just like me, and that's why he whines so much about it. Eleventh's final speech on how we are many different people during our lives is on the opposite end of that. He's changed, he's grown, he's not afraid of change anymore.
I thoroughly enjoyed 10's regeneration. He had so little time canonically as The Doctor, yet he did so much. But he used two regenerations, and was faced with turning to his last incarnation even after so much. And I think him visiting his human lover's granddaughter shows that The Doctor can relate more to John Smith. Great points on the video though!

I was surprised to hear your views on The End of Time, because I never felt it was that heavy-handed despite Ten ragging on about it so much. And I think that's because I could always relate to Ten's struggle. I had an undiagnosed mental condition that effected the way I thought and communicated my emotions when I first watched the episode (it was diagnosed early last year as genetic epilepsy). I struggled a lot with fully conveying my emotions; it always felt to me that I'd feel something, but there would be a huge gap between feeling and actually expressing. My mind was so distractible that, even while upset, I'd outwardly move on and even act as though nothing was wrong, despite it not being my intention in the slightest.
Ten talking about regeneration here brings up something previously only touched on here and there; that the Doctor changes irreversibly after regeneration. He has to find himself again, to figure out what kind of person he is. Even if he retains the memories of his other forms, there's a distinct barrier between them and his current self, because his current self is undeniably a different person with different tastes, interests and personality features. So, this always felt like a peek at the Doctor's true self to me. Like, deep down he felt misunderstood and couldn't properly convey the emotions he was feeling due to the new personalities he gained and lost in such rapid succession.
This of course would be compounded with the after-effects of war, and the fact that while Nine and Eleven were pretty long-lived, Ten was only around for a few years (in the Doctor's time), and therefore had much less time to spend as himself. I find it interesting how this subject is breached again with the Twelfth Doctor. Twelve's introduction has he and Clara nearly splitting up because Clara just can't see him as the Doctor anymore. She put so much stock into Eleven that she didn't see the Doctor's true self, much like Rose when Nine regenerated. This was never a new issue, and in my opinion it added a lot of character depth both going forward and retroactively, because it has been mentioned in the past.
Though I haven't watched a ton of Classic Who, the Fifth Doctor brings up this exact point after regenerating - that you never know what you're going to get with regeneration. He spent much of that first episode disoriented, trying to figure out who he was now and how he acted, and while the companions gave him the space to feel that out, they were clearly uncomfortable with the change and didn't know how to process it either. It's a multifaceted issue, and while Ten's way of bringing it up was definitely melodramatic, it still struck a chord with me.
Yeah, no Ten's regeneration is the whole reason I even care about any of his subsequent changes 😅 He's sad... For a bleedin good reason. Can't our boy show a little grief? For the first time we actually see how the prospect of dying multiple times only to come back as another person can effect a time lord emotionally. It should effect each doctor differently, but it should never make the audience indiferent. It has never EVER stricken me as whiny. Ten's conflicting humanity was one of the best things about his incarnation I'd say.... Flat regeneration scene? That was the single most emotional moment of my childhood thank you very much. And whenever I rewatch it it becomes the single most emotional moment of my adulthood too 😂 honestly, I had no idea anyone could have a problem with that scene. Made for an excellent moment at The Proms too.

I normally agree with full fat but having Tennant's regeneration being last and complaining about it THAT much is insane to me, especially how hard he went on Tennant's doctor being against regeneration because everything he is fades away. It doesn't come off as whiny to me at all and is a look into just how regeneration feels. Tennant is always going to be my doctor.
What broke me the first time and made me start crying was when Tennant walked away from Donnas wedding with Wilf saluting.
thank you for saying exactly what I'm thinking. so many doctorwho videos talking about tennant's regeneration somehow complain about him being whiny, or being unfair to moffat, or say how they didn't like his 'tantrum' before sacraficing himself for Wilf. I honestly just don't see how people can say that - to tennant he is dying, he was the most human incarnation of the doctor, let him express himself! how boring would it be if he just went 'yeah ok lol bye' and regenerated?
I think it is by far the most emotional piece of television I've seen in my life, especially compared to 11 and 12 where they seem to just go on and on with lengthy speeches, both not wanting to regenerate either - 12 even going so far as wanting to simply die rather than regenerate. It feels really hypocritical making remarks against 10 for him not wanting to go, when 12 goes even beyond that.
To me it's just clear that fullfat have something against tennant, because each video comparing him to any others he seems to get thrown to the gutter
@@sad_tbh Fullfat does critique 11 and 12’s overblown regeneration speeches, going as far to argue that “less is more.” That’s why he ranked 9’s regeneration as his favourite (and he also complimented RTD for keeping companion exits like Donna’s permanent) , and it’s also a tried and tested formula that’s worked out for the show. I mean just look at all of the classic who regenerations, none of them ever had an overblown speech or even had an inkling that they would even die like 10 did: 3 just died mid sentence, the 4th doctor only said one line to his companions, and the 5th doctor was mostly just mumbling to himself in a confused and delirious state.
But none of them ever complained or whined either (2 was an exception but his circumstances were different): 3 spent his final moments trying to comfort his friends while his voice was getting noticeably weaker and frailer by the second; 4’s only line was “It’s the end, but the moment has been prepared for,” and it was delivered with a weak smile; and the only thing that 5 said to his companion was that he gave the last of the cure to her and that he was “going soon.” There’s just something about a sudden demise that’s a lot more gut wrenching to me and Full fat.
I’m not saying your opinion is invalid, love what you love, I just wanted to try and clarify what I think Fullfat was trying to get across. Hope this helps :)

Personally, Capaldi’s regeneration was my favorite, not because of the scene or his final moments, but because from the very start 12 was having a life crisis and acted like he desperately needed that regeneration to be his final. In deep breath he brought up the broom analogy (if you keep changing the parts is it the same broom? Well of course its not (I don’t entirely remember the wording)), all through series 8 he didn’t know who he should be, in series 9 he offered his regeneration energy to Davros and prepared his confessional dial for his last moments (and to find peace... which he kinda needed) and continuously killed himself over and over, and then in series 10 he just had no sense of self preservation at all and was willing to die at the drop of a hat to protect just one person (going blind to save Bill, offering to fight the eaters of light for all eternity, preferring to die instead of giving humanity to the monks, and sacrificing himself in an impossible situation just to give people he barely knows time to live their lives).
I honestly would have MUCH preferred if 12 was either given a second chance at that regeneration (he had the best relationship with the sisterhood of carn who also happen to have regeneration drinks that let them choose who to be or probably some immortality potions lying around... just saying) or didn’t regenerate at all. Just imagine if his final words in Twice Upon a Time were “Yes, I know they’ll get it all wrong without me, but not now. I need to rest” or “take me home” (at the end of the Doctor Falls) and the TARDIS took him to Gallifrey. Gallifrey, you know where the timelords can bring any other timelord back to life (the Master) when they want and force the regeneration process. That way the Doctor can be given a proper period of rest or even a burial, and LATER be forcibly revived by the Timelords when the universe is going to shit (as it inevitably would). As an icing on the cake they could have recorded Capaldi’s final speech and had the TARDIS play it back to the new Doctor whenever they were revived. Then the show could have taken this opportunity to go off air and plan out the next few series or even do some prequel series (like finally giving Paul McGann a nice run as the 8th Doctor) or do some spin offs focusing on other characters (they could have used that to explain Missy surviving (though if she survived I would have much preferred her still trying to be good. I just feel like the Master’s character needs to move on and grow from “evil best frenemy” now that the drumming is cured and he knows the timelords did it)). Then have the show come back after they’ve reviewed what the next show runner has planned and worked out if it will not be complete shit.
But if we’re basing it purely off of the regeneration scene, hands down it goes to John Hurt’s War Doctor. There really is something magical about the Doctor regenerating with a smile on his face and looking forward to his next incarnation. War was born for a singular purpose (to fight in the worse conflict the universe has ever seen) and his entire life he was nothing but a soldier (for 900 years at that). To see him be given a chance to be the Doctor once again and die happy that he’s not only accomplished everything he needed in that incarnation, but also that in just that moment he will remember his life fondly was for me the best.
New who definitely has set some strange precedents for regenerations. Personally, I still loved Capaldi’s scene and I liked twice upon a time for what it was (a tie together of the first and 12th Doctor’s final stories (fighting mondasian cybermen) and retrospective look on the show), but I think that would have hit much harder if the 12th Doctor was the final incarnation (which we know isn’t coming for probably ever) or if 12 at least didn’t regenerate for the moment. I liked Capaldi’s speech, but I’m a bit bias in that I’d listen to him talk to no one for hours (and honestly, I didn’t want him to regenerate so stalling was fine) and his lines felt like a nice verbalization of his character development and the lessons he’s learned being the Doctor. I don’t know why every Doctor needs to regenerate in the TARDIS or on Christmas. 9 and 11 made sense. They both needed to get someone home and couldn’t stay in that hostile environment (at the very least if the Doctor was out of it post regeneration, his companions would be safe). 10 and 12 not as much. 10 knew how much he was holding it in and was already on Earth (he went in the TARDIS to just come back to where he was a few years later? He could have at least materialized the TARDIS on flat ground years later instead of putting it mid flight). 11’s first moments were at least funny, fun, and exciting because of the whole crashing thing, but Chibnall didn’t even do anything with 13 literally falling from space. It was just: Poof, she fell through the train (not like I wanted to see her falling through the sky and trying not to get herself killed like 11. Could have been a great moment of her making use of 12’s sonic shades and screwdriver before they broke or had his coat fall off her or... just anything). I liked the idea of every Doctor regenerating on Christmas (it’s not even that religious. For most people the holiday doesn’t even have anything to do with Christianity anymore; it’s just a holiday, and it’s not like literally every civilization has a winter holiday (because winter meant death and they needed some joy)), and I’m worried what Chibnall’s gonna do with that now that we don’t even have Christmas specials (I respect Moffat trying to desperately keep the specials and it can be said the show died for me with it’s Christmas specials).
I’m never going to not love regeneration as an idea. It was a brilliant way to keep the show going and it’s an emotional story of life, death, and rebirth all by itself “we’re all different people all through our lives...”/“either we change and go on or we die as we are”. Chibnall definitely took it took far and sucked the joy out of it for me. My canon right now is that The Doctor (12) died in the Doctor falls, twice upon a time was a nice fever dream, and NOTHING exists after that.
This is very nice. I think that head canon can work for me as well. I tried to give the Chibnall era a chance, but the show just doesn’t captivate me anymore. Peter was the perfect doctor to end on IMO. He didn’t need a whole cycle of regenerations. Just one last life to figure it all out.

I've always thought instead of David saying "I don't want to go" he should've said "Allons'y", liked he'd finally accepted the regeneration and was excited for the next doctor. The I dont wanna go however is more emotional and human and ends the era with a bang with sadness and then the big explosion.
someone else pointed out in another comment something that I never realized, that "allons-y" in English translates to "let's go" and Tennant's whole regeneration scene was about not wanting to go. I already liked the scene but realizing how his whole run he kept saying let's go and when it was finally time for him to go, he just couldn't actually makes me like it so much more. Yeah but whenever ten says allons-y he sounds happy but all of tens regeneration is sad, seriously imagine it the doctor slowly steps towards his tardis each step agony, the oods are singing him to his regeneration and ten steps in, he sets off and then the doctor puts a goofy grin on and says ALLONS-Y

But in The Bible, Jesus says “my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” before dying on the cross, but it’s taught that he was excited to go because he was dying for humanity. Maybe excited is the wrong word. It’s taught that he understood that he had to go, but even in understanding this he called out “why have you forsaken me?” So I feel like Tennants “allonsy” and “I don’t want to go” parallel that. Maybe that was intentional who knows, since people say 10 is a narc or has a god complex I wouldn’t be surprised if Davies alluded to a literal god complex. Fit with a “last supper” of visiting all his old friends as well.

I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure Jesus’ admittance of falling to understand why he had to die but still dying, and canonically resurrecting, is an allegory for the believers following the religion; it’s hard, it was hard for Jesus, but he did it and you should too, even if you can’t understand it because a new life will come out of it. So even though 10 seems god-like, he is still bound by time and space, life and death, even if his death is regeneration and he can travel through time and space. Sorry if this is kind of random. I normally agree with full fat but it was a really stupid criticism. It's not selfish at all. When he regenerates that version of him DIES. His face, his voice, his ENTIRE PERSONALITY changes. Who he is fundamentally changed, he wouldn't be 10 anymore. And after growing into and being who you are for so long of course he wouldn't want to go. 10 is also the doctor that loses. He loses Rose, Martha leaves him, he has to watch himself become the last surviving member of his race, find out he isn't the last, but then send his entire race and his home planet back to be destroyed, causing him to be the one that destroyed his race and dooms it to extinction. And right after that he gets flooded with radiation and is doomed to die. This Doctor gives so much only to constantly lose everything and gain nothing in return, he get's no reward for everything he has done. Of course he wouldn't want to go and have who he is perish, and lose one last time.
Tennant and Tate is my favorite Doctor/Companion relationship.

Never been a fan of NuWho regenerations always hoped for something different for each Doctor. But they all regenerate for similar reasons absorbing some form of power overload from some source -yawn. But Tennant's final line with the over the top music even I have to say brought a tear to my eye when I first watched it.
8:19, I do admit it’s tone deaf for him to feel this way.....but I think that’s the point. John Smith is indeed a version of his personality stripped of his adventures and struggles. John is just like Ten....not only does he cower at the face of his certain death....but he elects to die anyway to save others, sacrificing what he wants for what others need. In a way, John Smith could serve as foreshadowing for the circumstances of Ten’s own, ungrateful, sacrificial demise.
As for Twelve’s speech and the Christmas special, it truly feels like the Doctor it’s trying to stretch the moment of his death into a thousand....first as desire to simply rest....but then, during his speech, it feels like he’s just saying as much as he can just to stretch that moment on until he’s finally ready to let go. Directly voicing his desire to have a hopeful, kind, and fun-loving successor not only shows his desire to have them be different to how he started but also draws a parallel to the Yana version of the Master desiring his successor to be youthful and strong.
I think his departure being “selfish” doesn’t take away from it still being a emotionally impactful scene.
