    You missed one big feature of the Veritas. The shape of the cap iron and dimple in the side make it ideal for using on a shooting board

    My wife wanted to get me a special present for my 60th birthday 2 years ago and I selected a premium bevel up plane. It took me almost 2 months to decide on the Veritas over the Lie-Nielsen and there were 3 deciding factors: 1) I did not want to 'tap, tap' for blade adjustment; 2) The 'dimple' on the sides of the plane (plus the shape of the cap) makes shooting board use easier, and 3) I like the mouth adjustment better on the Veritas.
    I do not have large hands and the Veritas is a heavy beast, but I have gotten continual excellent results with the Veritas plane. I was so satisfied that I ended up getting the Veritas Bevel-Up Smoother Plane for my 61st birthday!

      This was a great choice imo! And I made the same one and sold the LN lol
      Veritas makes amazing planes!! They think about the user and add features to help! Not a knock on LN but all they did was copy a design and improve it, still great users. But veritas too it a step farther and designed a plane with us I'm mind! Just my opinion lol

      For me it was the availability of an O1 steel iron. LN irons are A2, and I'm not fond of A2 steel. The bit of extra length to the Veritas was another plus.

      But, since I *have* read that Powdered Metal Veritas Ours Goes To 11 steel is pretty much as difficult to sharpen as A2, I believe my heart will still belong to O1 in the end.

    I love my L-N low angle Jack. One of the best purchases I have made on my wood working journey. I have four blades, one flat blade, one rounded (slightly) that I use as a smoother, a toothed blade that I use for flattening thin panels for ukulele fronts and backs and finally a high angle scraper blade. I have not used sth scraper blade much, but he other three get much use. This is the only full size hand plane I own.
    Thanks for the comparison!

    Inherited a no name beveled up plane struggled with it for years. Bought the Vertas bevel up Jack plane. Highly recommend this type of plane for occasional users. L N plane did not have the features like the Veritas as stated in your video.

    Great video. I'm thinking I'd lean towards the Veritas because wider blade should translate to taller shooting ability. Not that I shoot a lot of 2" or bigger stock. Conundrum.

    The knob screw on the Lie Nielsen 62 is prone to overtightening, which causes the brass disc to separate from the knob.
    The Luban 62 (or Wood River elsewhere) has the mouth adjuster of the Stanley/LN and Norris lateral adjuster of Veritas. Great plane but the build quality and fit and finish is nothing like LN or Veritas.
    The advantage of the shorter narrower LN is it becomes the ideal "do everything plane".

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! I didn't know that about the knob!
      You are right I dear alot of guys that use the LA Jack as their main plane. They use the 25* iron for EVERYTHING.
      I should do a video comparing that lol

  • @simonsharp9162

    The veritas has much more mass than the LN. The LN feels vague in the hand compared to the Veritas. I tried both today and hands down Veritas win, and i own LN planes.

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  10 місяців тому

      Thank you for sharing! That's what I'm hearing too, alot of LN people still have the Veritas Low Angle jack lol oh and the shooting plane

  • @UserNameAnonymous
    @UserNameAnonymous Рік тому

    My issue with a plane like the LN is that it requires very accurate sharpening. If you sharpen by hand and the cutting edge is even a couple degrees off 90, you might not be unable to adjust it enough to get it aligned with the mouth. I think that's the whole point of a lateral adjuster, to give you leeway so you aren't forced to go back to the stones (or back to the grinder). I think Leonard Bailey and stanley wouldn't have gone through the trouble to include a lateral adjuster on any planes unless this was an issue. It might have been easier to manufacture and easier for us to use if they added those "bumpers" to to guide it straight.
    If you use a honing guide or you're good at sharpening, it's a non-issue. If you're like me, you'd run into problems. I've wound up with skewed edges even with a honing guide because of the veritas mark 2 honing guide's manufacturng quality control issues.

    You need no sideways play at the sharp end of the iron for the hammer or Norris lateral adjuster to work best. The Veritas has them for that reason On my wooden planes I have grub screws. They make a huge difference. Lateral adjuster on the Lie Neilsen is going to be a pain and the Veritas tote is better. The best totes are on Qiangshens.

    • @BatCaveCreations

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  Рік тому

      No, not at all, imo lol. unless you make end grain cutting boards alot lol I actually plan to sell both of those
      Thay may start an argument because some use it as their main plane, I use bevel down tho so it's not needed for me. You do want something low angle for trimming box joints and dovetails tho. A block plane or the veritas LA smoother (no 3 size) are what I use.

  • @morganjames2137
    @morganjames2137 Рік тому

    I've been wondering for a while now, how does a low angle plane with 38' bevel compare to a standard plane. The angle of attack should basically be the same but what is the impact of no chip breaker on the feel for the user and finish on the timber?

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  Рік тому +2

      The chip breaker doesn't make a difference for bevel up. I look at it as a bevel up is slicing like a chisel (sole of plane = bottom of chisel, flat reference so it doesn't dive deeper.)
      A 38 iron needs alot more effort to push vs a standard bench plane. Like having a steeper angle on a chisel.
      I hope that helps answer your question!

      @@BatCaveCreations not true really. Some tools are better than others. UA-camrs are all just chickenshit to say one is better than the other because they are scared the fans of the loosing tool will stop watching their precious channel.

    • @BatCaveCreations
      @BatCaveCreations  11 місяців тому +1

      @James_T_Kirk_1701 you seem passionate about this and I get it. If I do a review where clearly one is better than the other I say it. But with Veritas, Lie Nielsen, Clifton, etc. Those higher end brands (the ones I show most of the time) it will come down to preference because they function the same, it's just the little details that will change preference. Now if I were to compare the modern Stanly LA Jack to this comparison it would be dead last. Doesn't even stand a chance lol
      I have to go back but I'm pretty sure I say my preference in the videos (most of them?) Which would mean who I thought the winner was.
      I guess I try not to be an "influencer" and persuade a purchase I want people to use the info given to decide what works for them. Unless 1 is crap over the other but again, most of what I compare is similar in "level" and "functionality" haha

    У меня Veritas, и он нравится мне гораздо больше, чем Lie Nilsen, потому что он более технологичен и в нем гораздо больше маленьких умных решений.
    Однако у меня есть одна очень глупая история связанная с системой ограничения закрывания ротика. Однажды мне нужно было вынуть из рубанка 50° лезвие, которое там стояло и заменить его свеже заточенным 25° лезвием. Старое лезвие было плотно зафиксировано двумя винтиками находящимися справа и слева. У меня рядом не было маленькой отвертки, но я смог довольно легко его извлечь. Но когда я стал ставить туда новое лезвие, оно оказалось чуть-чуть шире и я никак не мог уложить его на постель, оно застряло между винтиками и встало с перекосом. Я постарался очень бережно извлечь его, однако в какой-то момент все равно произошёл рывок, режущая кромка ударилась об ограничительный винт ротика, и на ней образовался довольно глубокий скол прямо по центру лезвия. Конечно, я сам виноват в том, что не выкрутил два фиксирующих винтика, однако ирония ситуации в том, что заточка лезвия оказалась разрушена из-за того самого винта, который должен предотвращать его повреждения. С тех пор я почти никогда не затягиваю винты в бортах базы.

      yes, yes, I was really staring blankly at one point. By the way, this was the first time I sharpened a blade using the barrel roller for the Veritas mk II sharpener (I had the sharpener itself for a long time, but I bought this additional convex roller much later). And I was absolutely delighted with the beauty of the rounded cutting edge! Both the primary and secondary chamfers turned out just perfect! And all this was destroyed by my reluctance to look for a screwdriver...

    Norris style adjusters are just a little sketchy for my taste. If you bump it while moving the blade in or out, you're skewed! (pun intended) I'll stick with the LN. With the precision bed milling, skew is pretty much impossible if you sharpen your blade properly. My LN 5 1/2 beats either of these planes for shooting, so.... Thanks for sharing!
