Thank you so much. I immerse myself in your adventures, more so lately & appreciate you so much each week. This escape each week is so important to my mental health.
I was there a week after Milton and experienced the same thing. Tons and tons of sand dollars. Yesterday I found a huge tulip. So pretty with a giant crab in it I did walk him back to the water as he was way up on the beach. Thanks for all you share
@SWF Beach Life , I've been on Sanibel since Nov.11th but heading out tomorrow, the 19th. I've had a ball and found so many amazing shells. My friend found 2 huge conch shells. We traveled to Fort Myers Sunday and was saddened by the devastation. I have been down a few times since Ian but seeing the debris and homes gone, its just so empty and vacant. Ill be back in March and will be staying on Fort Myers beach. Until then ill deal with my shelling withdrawls by watching you. Thank you for teaching me so much about shells/ shelling.
I was on Sanibel today and had a good time too! I'm glad your trip was fun and I'm so glad you'll be back! March is a great time to be here too and I LOVE Fort Myers Beach 🥰 I hope you do too!
Thank you for that lovely walk on the beach. I spent 20+ years on N FL beaches, I have never seen that many sand dollars at the same time. One of the things I find interesting the sand dollars in Australia are tiny, they have so many shells that are bigger than here in Florida but not the sand dollars. I am glad you are starting to appreciate tinys more because they are my favorites.
I had a fabulous "tiny" day yesterday and found so many great little treasures. I'm really starting to appreciate them more. And the clean up is a breeze!
WOW 😳 I lived on Anchorage Street on Ft Myers Beach for a year.FORTY years ago.Would love to see a shot of the beach now near the street!!!!I use to peddle my bike with my 2 year old son in the basket every single day to play and shell Your site brings back memories 😂❤Sharmon!
I love watching you, hon. I wish I was there to do this, but I just live my dream through you and others..... Y'all are fantastic!! Thank you for the videos!!
I know what you mean about the brightness. I was down on Honeymoon island in late February and the sun is so bright that your pupils are closed so tightly that it is hard to see certain details. But I also noticed that colors were amazingly vibrant. And yes I picked up as many shiva shells as I could find and I actually went swimming in the freezing gulf. 😀
YES!!!! Ok, that makes sense that it was so bright it's hard to see. Thank you for confirming I'm not completely bananas! The shiva shells were so fun! I picked up so many! I know that beach is still closed right now due to hurricane Milton. I hope it opens up again so we can all enjoy it again! You are way more warm blooded than me - there is no way I'd be swimming in February! 🥶

I love watching the live sand dollars move! Thanks so much for your videos, I live in Florida but not near Ft Meyer’s, and enjoy the different ones you find then the ones I find at Pass a grille beach.
I have a slightly irrelevant question. I have spent countless hours shelling on Sanibel and I'm dreaming on finding a crown conch but never have. Is there a beach you could recommend that I would have a better chance of finding this magnificent shell?
Bunche Beach. I know Sanibel has them near a bay....but I don't know exactly where that is. Bunche Beach always has the live ones, and I mange to normally find an empty shell. BUT....I went looking for crown conchs at Lovers Key and didn't find any. I am curious if the critters are back at Bunche yet.
We used to see sand dollars by the thousands like that at Jekyll Island GA years ago. That was our favorite place to go for years. Also saw a lot on treasure Island for one day earlier this year, then we hardly saw any after that. Amazing how the beach can change from day to day.
I was talking to a subscriber that was staying in a place on the beach and we remarked at how much the beach can change each day. I love that because I never know what to expect!

Love those live Sand Dollars. I found a couple in May and returned them to the water. But I certainly did not find as collectible ones as you have. lol. Yay, my question from last week came into the video. I just find that interesting that the colorful moon snails have no drill holes. Fascinating. The tagalus are cool. And oh my on the true tulips. Wow. And the intact Rose petal talon. lovely. And the Crown Conch. Hard to come by. I'm going nuts over the Sand Dollars. lol. I'm not sure I could have stopped picking them up. lol. awesome day. Thank you for taking us with you.
After the bottom gets disturbed, colonies of sand dollars and other sea life will wash up on the shore. I have found several kinds of starfish and sea urchins after hurricanes. Just like shells and coral.
I just saw Paul!! My week is coming up. Not sure if I will be able to come, but will try. Used to be so many dead sand dollars. Not so many for about 4-5 years. Hope I get to come this year!
Clearwater beach in July 2024 when I was there had literally thousands of them. Never seen that before like that! But they weren’t on the beach. They were on the sandbar area you can swim to. You could feel them with your feet! It was insane!
That is what I saw the first time too! I didn't want to walk on them so we bought a snorkel mask so I could just float over them and collect the dead ones. It was amazing!
look forward every sunday to our walks down the beaches together!! here a possible idea: i assume you do the voice over and editing after the actual filming but i would love to see you possibly do a small inset window of you "while" doing the voice overs. it would be kinda like those you-tubers who inset video of themselves reacting to something. the exuberance i hear in your voice reacting to something cool you've found or seen would be even better if i could see your facial expressions.
Where you picked up the sea urchin, the black thing right by it before you picked it up, looked like a fossil horse tooth. I was hoping you would have picked it up. Sure looked like one, but I could be wrong, could have been a piece of dark wood. I've found lots of fossils on the beaches.
I see exactly what you mean! I've seen a few Paleo Chris episodes and at a quick glance it does look like a horse tooth but it was just a piece of wood. I have only found a few fossil shells so far!
I see what you mean! That was just a piece of wood but it did look like it could have been a fossil horse tooth. I've watched a few Paleo Chris episodes - he even recommended the blacklight I have!
Great shell finds.🐚🦀 Do you have a recommendation (aside from acid) to take off the green/brown alge (?) that is on some of my fighting conchs I recently found after the hurricanes? I used water & bleach and that did not get the build up off. thx
Bleach and acid are the only 2 chemicals I've found that are effective at cleaning shells. If you have used bleach water and the build up didn't come off, it's likely not coming off. You can try 100% straight bleach and see if that helps but that's all I got.
Now that you mention it, I have a shelling log book that I am going to start using! For now I have everything committed to memory, but that's not going to last forever!

During the Red Tide in 2018 there were so many dead Sand Dollars on Sanibel it was terrible! I actually cried! I made videos of them, fish, turtles, etc. Broke my heart! ❤❤
@@jojoa0808I know! It sounded like barking walruses 😂 on the beach every day for 2 weeks while there. A lot of elderly tourists couldn't come out on the beach because of respiratory diseases. I didn't get in the water much because of all the dead fish and shells. We even saw a huge sea turtle being hauled off the beach. So sad😢
@ Luckily we didn’t see a bunch of dead fish or hubby wouldn’t have wanted to ever come back. We’ve been there every year since except this last year when we took our youngest daughter and her two teens to Navarre Beach which was in driving distance from where we live in Texas.
Happy shelling, everybody! I need your help with this one. While snorkeling on Bowman’s Beach a few days ago (November 14th, Sanibel Island, extremely poor visibility), I found a Brown Tibia (Tibia insulaechorab) shell. Yep, the one that is native to the western Indian Ocean. Perfect condition, shiny and glossy, just perfect. The problem? It doesn’t belong here. Is this a prank? Did someone purchase it from a shell shop (She Sells Sea Shells is my favorite) and threw it in the ocean? (that’s my theory, anyway). Any thoughts?
That is what we call a "wedding shell." It happens to the best of us! People throw parties, weddings, celebrations of some sort on the beach and use seashells as decorations. Those decorations can get left behind and the next thing you know, a sheller finds it! It's happened to me with a really cool turrid. Enjoy that cool shell that you didn't have to buy in a gift shop 😂
@@SWFBeachLife Thank you, thank you, thank you! It makes a perfect sense now. Doves, butterflies, and…. shells (happily ever after, I hope… ). The Tibia shell is a keeper. Your videos are great. Calm, relaxing and informative. Sometimes (well, most of the time), I am jealous of your amazing finds. On the other hand, looking at a perfect Junonia shell I found on Turner Beach a few years ago helps to coup with such jealousy 😁... Happy shelling! ❤🐚❤
Why are they such small ones that are dead, what makes them die so early? Also you never see any dead sea stars but you always find them in the stores?? Do you happen to know?
I'm not sure what killed them. They could have been pushed too far up the beach in a storm and couldn't get back in the water. And strangely our sea stars don't dry up like the ones you find in the gift shops. I never see any dead ones either!
That is when a mama turtle goes onto the beach and decides she's not ready to lay a nest of eggs. The tracks can be detected and it's called a NNE (Non nesting emergence) or more commonly a false crawl.
Anyone else hit the like button before even watching the video? ❤❤
Edit: Sharmon, looking at live sand dollars in a headlamp is very creepy-cool!

Yep! I know it will be a great beach-combing time!

Now that you mention it, I have a shelling log book that I am going to start using! For now I have everything committed to memory, but that's not going to last forever!
I wonder what happens to the sillia on the sand dollars, do they dry up and fall off? do they retract them into the shell? strange
They dry up and fall off over time, leaving the "test" of the animal behind. That's the part we collect 😊
Was that teeny hermit crab sitting in a wentletrap?
No, wentletraps are TINY! That was likely a mauve-mouth drill
I think the name of the shell is intended to be “rose petal” tellin, describing the shape and not the color.
There is a family of shells called tellins which they belong to - hard to say how they got the name "rose petal" but maybe!

@ Luckily we didn’t see a bunch of dead fish or hubby wouldn’t have wanted to ever come back. We’ve been there every year since except this last year when we took our youngest daughter and her two teens to Navarre Beach which was in driving distance from where we live in Texas.
I experienced a lot of sadness over on FMB during that time too. So sad to see so many animals struggling and dying.
@@SWFBeachLife It was very sad. It's such a special place ❤️
Sharmin , please tell me you go to the beach with your husband. That’s really early to be by yourself. ❤
Thank you for your concern!
Cope...☹
@@ssidach Lol! Yes, I myself can take solace in a buttercup lucine or even. Good banded tulip 😃
🥰❣💯👍
Why are they such small ones that are dead, what makes them die so early? Also you never see any dead sea stars but you always find them in the stores?? Do you happen to know?
I'm not sure what killed them. They could have been pushed too far up the beach in a storm and couldn't get back in the water. And strangely our sea stars don't dry up like the ones you find in the gift shops. I never see any dead ones either!
I'd be afraid where to step with all those sand dollars
I was being really careful where I stepped!
What's a false crawl?
That is when a mama turtle goes onto the beach and decides she's not ready to lay a nest of eggs. The tracks can be detected and it's called a NNE (Non nesting emergence) or more commonly a false crawl.
There are a lot more people in your video this year. Not that many last year.
There are a lot more people down here in the winter than there are in the summer.
