  • 🎹 Guess what? The full Soundtrack to Sporepedia is now available on Spotify. spotify.com/album/0K68XZP8TQT...
Please let all your favorite play lists know it's available!
I have a new recurring live stream where I compose live. Many listeners have told me the music reminds them of the Sporepedia sound track. if your looking for more Sporepedia to chill to check out this episode of Frequensea - • Sound Design with an A...
I bet you didn't know only a portion of the Sporepedia soundtrack actually made it into the game. Read on for a great little story!
In 2006 I got the chance to submit some music to an upcoming Maxis game called Spore. After a meeting in Emeryville, California, where I got to see a little of the game in progress, I came home and composed a sample piece to submit for the game. The response was positive. I continued working on the piece with good feedback. However, at the same time Brian Eno and Cliff Martinez were hired as true composers of the game and I slowly slipped out of the project.
After the game's release I was contacted by Maxis because they wanted to send me a copy of the game. I had no idea that my song was kept as is for the Sporepedia portion of the game.
Fast forward a few years I start seeing my song posted online with credits going to Brian Eno and Cliff Martinez. I wasn't even on the WIKI page. Not only did people really enjoy the song but over time it had become a musical reminiscent slice of their teen years. I contacted a few youtube people and let them know I was the composer. Over time I have been given credit for the song.
BUT there's more. When I started seeing my song online, I knew that only a portion of the original piece was in the game. I dug around and found the hard drive and literally plugged it in backward and fried the only backup I had of the song. The full song and PROOF that I was the composer was gone for good.
Well not for good. I won't name names but it turns out that someone from somewhere special somehow kept a copy of my song during the composition process. So, it's with extreme pleasure that this you tube video has the entire never before heard complete 13 minute track for the Sporepedia section of the game Spore.

This song is too much... I remember when I used to make creatures to my grandmother 2009, I used to show her them, and we had many good times with spore... Sadly, in 2017 she died due to cancer... Everytime I listen to this it reminds me of those times, and I always cry of nostalgia.

I had no clue you were behind this. I have both an embarrassing and impressive amount of hours on the game. I would spend entire summer afternoons on my parents computer playing spore. I never beat the game because the space stage was too complex for my 9 year old brain, but I made a plethora of bright memories playing the creature stage and making monsters. Thank you for being a part of my childhood.

I remembered so badly wanting to get my hands on this game as an 11 year old up to its release date. The day that Spore came out in 2008, I got the game. I stayed up all night, and every day I was playing it. I have fond memories of toying around with the creators, browsing through sporepedias, going through through the stages of being a cell, creature, tribal man, civilian, spaceman, and designing buildings, vehicles and even planets. It seemed like there were so many endless possibilities. This game will always have a special place in my heart no matter how old I get.

It’s crazy that I never met anyone else in my life who has played Spore but it has made me so happy going into this comment section and seeing people who shared the same experience with the game as I did. When I play Spore now it feels a bit outdated but honestly when I was a kid, it was everything to me. I loved it so much. Luckily I got my little brother into it now and he loves it as well. The sporepedia theme is where all the nostalgia is stored for me. ❤️ I could listen to this for hours

This song has been a profound part of my life for a long, long time now. It is nostalgic for playing Spore as a kid, yes but to me it is much more than that. This song is nostalgia for past relationships, life events, it reminds me of smelling the night air after leaving a friend's house feeling completely happy and content with life. Still coming back to this masterpiece every once in a while. Having these comforting, nostalgic chords and progressing leitmotifs really puts me at ease. As though it really was like I was still age 11, just sitting at the computer and picking one of the many goofy dudes on my screen to play as in my next galactic adventure. This song just cruises in time with me, leaving this butterfly feeling in my stomach and a yearning for the time I spent during every afternoon afterschool, when I would drop all my math homework to explore the stars, the planets, the creatures and the civilizations. And even now, I still play Spore to explore while I can't explore the real world.

spore got torn to shreds by critics and the media, it was even the catalyst for the unfortunate fall of maxis, but one thing stands true, the game itself is a testament to negative feedback from media, yet positive feedback from the actual playerbase, you don't see that much anymore, with the reverse being the case for most games. in my eyes, spore was no failure. it stands the test of time, passing through with flying colours and an expansive playerbase that is growing to this day. spore is a gorgeous game with infinite possibilities, and this piece of music truly captures that feeling. gorgeous music to encompass the feeling of an ever expanding galaxy.

Spore had the problem of being too ambitious for its time, with a flora creator and aquatic stages/creatures originally planned to be a full part of the game. I absolutely loved the game and still do, it was such a joy for me to be able to create monsters and adventures, two things I still love to do in D&D as an adult but this game and this song scratched my imaginative itch for years. the nostalgia hit me with a truck, and then saved me
when i listen to this i dont just get nostalgia from spore, but from my whole life leading up to listening, evolving like one of my creations from spore.
the first time i played i named my species "The Naa" they were purple duck like creatures, originating as small tiger striped beans.
I evolved them through every stage, every challenge.
at one point in the tribal stage, i had sparked a war and was losing terribly, the invaders got to my tribe, destroyed everything, i only had a few people left, all on incredibly low HP.
I saved at that point and whenever i tried again i would just get killed, i came close to quitting spore as a whole, but i held through, eventually i was able to fend off the invaders by some stroke of luck.I drove them back to they're base and wiped them out.
After that it was civilization stage, an epic ot stuck i my city at the very start. i could not defeat it so i deleted that world, started a new one on space stage with the same species "The Naa".
I colonised every arm of the galaxy, terreformed planets and even the moon of the home planet.
We had may allies. but we had two enemies the Grox (obviously), but the Ixplix or whatever they were called were my real enemy, they would always attack when im far away, after who knows how long i invaded them back, i brought back my coalition of allies, destroyed roughly a half of their empire, then i made peace and was able to forge an alliance for a while, that withered away, i even had a small war with them when our alliance fizzled out, but nothing realy came of that.
All i have of that original planet i deleted is screenshots, if you know how to restore deleted planets then please tell me.
Thanks for reading if you did read this, may your life be happy.

Nothing in the universe would be able to take this track’s place on the Sporepedia. I read your description, and learning that you weren’t solely responsible for all of Spore’s music is sad, yet makes sense. The other two composers failed to capture the pure magical essence this track does. If you were the main composer, I have no doubt that the rest of Spore’s music would become 10x more beautiful than it is now.

This song is such a huge part of my childhood - thank you, thank you so much for composing this. It means more than I can say. I was wondering, is this song in particular on Spotify? I can’t seem to find it.

Hi Aitriah, no it's not on Spotify. Honestly I've never thought about putting it up there. I'm not sure If I can do that as i would technically make money off of it. Right now i have it here and Bandcamp for free to keep me out of any hot water. If you go to saulstokes.bandcamp.com it is available to download for free.

@@frequensea_experience Oh thank you!! That’ll really help me, thank you! I put as much of the Spore soundtrack as I can on my studying and relaxing playlist so I was hoping to put it on there. Maybe I can find a way. Thanks again!

Echoing everyone else in saying that this song has a huge amount of nostalgia for me - it is hard not to get emotional when I hear it! I played spore the year it came out and for a long while after. This score remains one of my favorite and most meaningful video game scores of all time to me - thank you for this :)

It must feel awesome to know you created something, that ended up becoming *Nostalgic* to so many different people's childhoods, and is fondly looked upon years later...
That is one of my personal biggest goals in life. I dream to create something in my lifetime, that will feel nostalgic to someone in the future I will probably never meet.
Thank you for the memories! :)

I actually don't think I truly understand the extent of it still. I did just receive an email from a band member that said his band once tried to play it live at an intimate gig! How crazy is this? i'm secretly hoping that someday there will be some kind of Spore conference and I'll get to come and say hi in person.

This was the second game I ever played, I was only 8 years old, I still play this game even today. It’s incredible how much a game and subsequently the people who made it, can change you , this is why I’m going into the game industry so that maybe one day I can have the same effect on someone else.

I remember as a little 8 year old kid playing on my sisters laptop. I didn’t care how much time I spent, and I would tell my mom we were doing something together just to play spore lol. I would spend sooo many hours just making creatures, I had probably hundreds of creatures that were just random blobs of legs arms and other parts. I remember she got mad once because I had like 100 worlds that I just never deleted lol. I miss this game so much I wish I could play it for the first time again. I wish I could have that childish creativity back. I wish I could just make stuff without worrying if it looked good or was “optimal” or whatever.

May I ask what inspired your instrumentation of this? (I also noticed you made the song sort of "Evolve" as it goes along, which is ingenius)

    Hi Saul,
Just thought I'd let you know that this song is incredible and is a huge part of my childhood. You're an incredible artist, and I hope you've found success in your endeavors beyond composition for Spore.
P.S. -- any change of a high quality MP3 download?
EDIT: Just found it on your bandcamp. You're a gem.

Thank you for your time and effort to get this whole version uploaded. I really appreciate getting the chance to hear the original full idea of the composer for music pieces, although they (often) do not fit as they are into movies/games/series with everything else.

I would love to know how you did some of those flowy synths, they sound so cool. I also love your story about the track, kinda strange to hear that about a track that I heard lots and lots when I was a kid. Back then it didn't even occur to me that someone composed it, it was just kind of a given.
