Was anyone shot? Nope. They used rubber bullets, there was no live bullets. So one need to be very careful with words. Was there potential overbearing of force used against protesters? Probably. However one can't ignore brutality happening in both sides - the TV's siege for example, or the day of stolen tank and stabbed police officer. So it is a complicated issue.
By the way talking about totalitarianism one would need to mention's today Hungary in these remarks, because sure they following similar tradition of 2006 - if in a more subtle and clever way - like in 2006 people could gather in front of the parliament to protest, and had been able to camp there months (rightfully in my opinion), however today it is impossible to do so without prosecution.
Also just some funny facts of the events of 2006 and today: the NGO that defended the rights of the protesters (Tarsasag a Szabadsagjogokert) is on of the number one enemy of the state today, and attacked as some kind of conspirators of Soros (because they doing what they done that time too).
