There's actually a lot of ways to get out of the Backrooms, they're just very rare and / or on extremely high floors. "The End" is not actually the last level, just a trap level meant to coerce survivors into settling inside it.
I'm coming back to this after Update 4. Love to see how the game progressed. I love how the entities in level 1 and 2 were replaced with less scary smilers lol. Also he added 3 levels he said he wouldn't
To be fair, you need to ACTIVELY try to make an environment look bad in UE4. What he means is he needs someone to keep an eye on tilesets not tiling properly, places without polygons and that kind of stuff, which, yeah...he kinda does.
i think the wheat field would be a cool reprieve from the claustrophobic dimly lit, completely enclosed levels. You could come up, out of a shed or outhouse or something
its just good premade textures with the benefit of unreal engine making everything look good. If you want to replicate that, its simply building the geometry, find accurate textures on the internet and putting them onto the mesh, done
I think you should add steam workshop support later on. Wouldn't it be really cool if there was a backrooms game that had modding support to add just anything in the backrooms? You should focus on polishing the game and making it better before adding mod support though, but that's just my opinion. Keep up the great work and i will definitely be downloading this game when it comes out.
Dude i would love to see level 7, yes its an ocean, but the important part is what's in it, a bunch of unknown creature skeletons, underwater caves, and most importantly the thing of level 7. Honestly i would be thrilled to be able to play it!
@@ez-qz3lq I don't think putting VHS affects in the first person view of the game would be a good idea because you're looking through the vision of the wanderer
You missed something, it is the sence of overwhelming dread once those entities spot you and the inability to recognize their features which adds up to the overall backrooms theme. I would recommend adding a screenshake effect that is gradually increasing with the movement speed as well as increased speed when spotted. But for a 1 week game - awesome, keep up the good work!
Hey dude, i usually dont leave a comment on anything but this looks just like the thing i was hoping for and waiting for a long time. Thank you for doing this please take your time and add as much levels as you can, the poolrooms and the end would be sick. Great work!
If the animations turn out smooth, and you add a couple more levels, i think this will be the backrooms game we've all been waiting for, and if it turns out that way i think you cound even charge like 10-25$ for it, it would be worth it. Game looks so good, the atmosphere is insane, and thats one of, if not, the most important thing in a backrooms game or in anything regarding liminal spaces. You got me excited dude, wish you the best 👌
I mean there is a backrooms game before the backrooms became what it is not but its very different due to it involving sanity and a less agressive monster that has a way different pattern of how it works.
he should do like unturned did and make a supporter pack or some that lets you access any backroom that he creates or some incentive while keeping the game free to play
it's exactly my dreaming backrooms game, what i always wanted, randomly going in some liminal places, finding an exist to go in another level with its own atmosphere , avoiding time to time monsters ... the problem is that guy abuse of his humore and so it's hard to think that this game will be chillig and scary
A small idea: Maybe noclipping through pipes and walls is the way you can delay the entities on level 2. A giant maze-like pipe system where entities wander and you must stealth around them with noclip may be fun.
I agree. I would love to play a backroom simulator. Rather than being constently chased by a dumb enity, I would rather love walk randomly in an infinite backroom level with some chance to randomly meet an entity. Damn I would love to meet a smiler after a corner, and avoid being attacked by just... Slowly going backward. I would love to go to level FUN not by forwarding in the game, but by nocliping trough the ceiling of level 0, as it should be if I trust the wiki.
for level FUN, i think something you could add that would be pretty cool would be a partypooper hiding near an exit. I know that the partygoers wiped them out, but it would be a fun easter egg aswell as an advantage to those who pay attention to their surroundings, as they know that they are near an exit.
I hope there'll be a way to disable entities. Not that I'm too scared of them or anything (i might be 😭) but I'd prefer a walking simulator considering the very core of liminal spaces is the absence of any living being and the environment and ambience should itself be the scary/uneasing part. Apart from that I can't wait to play it!
Quick tip: When making something, put some pillars in corners or (when you're making something cave like) make a structure that looks like it holds the cave so it dosen't break in on itself
Finally someone who makes an in depth backrooms game, I've seen a lot of games about the backrooms but they usually only cover level 0 and have only one enemy, nice to see someone actually make a deeper game
it's exactly my dreaming backrooms game, what i always wanted, randomly going in some liminal places, finding an exist to go in another level with its own atmosphere , avoiding time to time monsters ... the problem is that guy abuse of his humore and so it's hard to think that this game will be chillig and scary
WOW this looks actually good! I have watched a sad amount of backrooms lore and it made me want a game based on the wiki. I think the backrooms are a very interesting consept. Maybe you should add almond water and like a hunger and thirst bar.
Like someone else stated here: The truest horror is that of not knowing, and close calls. It's a fine line between dying too often and making scary enemies lol. Since the skills and ... well, uh... _intelligence_ of a player base vary wildly That being said, just having a good ambience, and actually have *NO* creatures attack you, but expecting it all the time, that can actually be much scarier than being chased constantly. A couple of games that did this perfect: Alien Isolation . The whole game is perfect in regards to exposure/danger and ambience Poppy's Playground with that initial vent chase; note that this is a long and very linear game, so the vent scene wasn't oversaturating the player with chases, and once happening, was terrifying. SCP Containment Breach . Mainly terrifying because of the quality of monsters, randomness, and additional anomalies, and situation and goal, made it a great combo game. There's not any more I really found that great or scary that I can remember. I guess Dead Space and F.E.A.R. was terrifying too - the first ones I mean - because it was much uncharted territory back then, but I digress Point is, the scariest part is expecting to be scared. And the longer time goes before that happens, the worse it is
Tbh, i think it needs a mix. Once you figure out nothing is chasing you, it gets kinda boring imo. You need a good mix of extreme ambience and isolation, combined with something horrifying chasing you, with good sound effects.
I'm more of an old-school backroom enjoyer, so I really don't like how ALL entities are hostile. Now I know at the very start backrooms were a bland concept that merely worked as alternative to hell, by you being isolated, but... What if there were some entities that were beneficial? What if some only turned hostile conditionally? What if some are entirely unpredictable, and can "switch modes" like a bipolar person, being nice, passive or friendly one moment, and then murderous or unhinged the next? You could easily turn this into a survival game with more layers than avoiding the entities. I'm not saying you should add hunger and thirst mechanics, if you do, you should make it so it's not very prevalent (surviving days without water, weeks without food). But perhaps you could make an entire "entity ecology," where some specimens hunt the others, those others try to hide, etc. Level 2 was also described as being a storage or warehouse if I recall correctly, further specifying that electronic gadgets and prepackaged sources of nourishment appear there at times, making it a perfect, but highly hazardous scavenger zone. Some other level had an entire community of unfortunate survivors hiding about, meaning you could sell or give out the claimed resources, which would affect your ranking there AND support building of new semi-safe outposts in other zones, which can be destroyed by entities if too much attention is brought there (if you constantly run there to safety too many times). There is so much potential, and sadly I can't claim it, as I'm not a game dev :(
it's exactly my dreaming backrooms game, what i always wanted, randomly going in some liminal places, finding an exist to go in another level with its own atmosphere , avoiding time to time monsters ... the problem is that guy abuse of his humore and so it's hard to think that this game will be chillig and scary
Please, don't just make the fun levels. The plainer levels grant some rest and reprieve from the harsher ones. They will add a level of calm to the game. (Also include MEG and some of the other organizations)
I think there should be some kind of head bopping motion to make it feel more like you're actually walking. It would also be cool if you and the entities were a bit slower so they'd have more of a sense of weight and presence. Otherwise really good work, looks amazing.
I've always disliked the concept of "levels" and "monsters" in the Backrooms, but this game looks absolutely amazing? Any way to implement a free roam/endless mode for the weirdos like me who just want to walk around?
What I would love to see the most in a game like this is a loot system, in some of the levels you can find boxes which hold random items such as almond water or batteries and even sometimes tools.
This man's the mumbo jumbo of making a game. I'm not an environment artist so it's still rough around the edges... LITERALLY ONE OF THE BEST ENVIRONMENTS IVE EVER SEEN
When I first saw this video, in 2022, I thought this would be a funny, goofy unrealistic backrooms game, now that I've played and finished the game, I realised how different it was. it was actually scary, it was pretty goofy and funny but it was also really realistic, the models for the levels and the entities are amazing, the gameplay is amazing, overall I love this game and can't wait until the full release
Why does the second level look like the basement of the apartment I used to live in when I was like 12? I would always run through that shit when my mom told me to go and get something. The worst part about the place was that the lights only activated when they heard motion or any noise. So you would have to go close to the light and they would just flicker before they turned on. Truly terrifying.
I decided to go back and watch your older videos for this series as I had only seen the most recent couple, but wow, things changed quite a bit here. Started off with procedural generation when you talk about adding it in newer videos so I had no idea it was planned from the start, and the Scratcher being the entity for Level 1 instead of Smilers. Interesting how things changed through development.
looks great! i havent been keeping up with backrooms lore and stuff (only a video of level 1 on google maps) but this looks great and im starting to get genuinely interested in this concept
there isn't really any lore this is a sentence out of the wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Backrooms ("Although Internet users have expanded upon this concept by creating different "levels" of the Backrooms and "entities" which inhabit them, the original version came from a two-paragraph 4chan comment on a post asking for "unsettling images", where an anonymous user invented a story based on one of the photos")
Should add multiplayer where you can either have 2 players (have it where you can lose them hehe) or you can rarely see an online person. And if this is a on going project in the future you add a way to make small economies like in the back rooms with either players making them or npcs. Another is maybe like a food system where you need to drink or eat. But the bars last a while as constantly having to do that would be annoying. In the backrooms there is almond water. The carpet in level 0 has a moist substance that if drinking you go slightly insane. Hope this becomes a big and going project as most backrooms games only have level 0 or nothing really fun. Bye bye
@@verb7322 well of course games arnt easy to make But this is also my dream game I'm just showing him ideas If I could make games and I'm learning I will definitely do my ideas
The End level (2:20) is an actual place!!? Let me explain why I am freaking out. I had a dream of no clipping into level 0 of the backrooms. As I progressed, I eventually got to this Library level and these abnormal entities that resembled librarians constantly chased me. I had to hide under desks or tipped over shelves. This was the last level I was in before I woke up. You may be saying "so what, you had a dream of "The End", nothing special". That's the thing . . . I never heard of this level, not even knowing about a library level . . . until I watched this video. I swear, seeing that image gave me vivid memories of that place.
If you could add multiplayer, that would be amazing. It would be nice to play a game with friends and have a fun time while also being scared shitless.
a multiplayer mode would be interesting. I know it can ruin the horror vibe of the backrooms a bit, but it would be great to be able to play with your friends and get scared together

I've been watching your vids and I think your work is awesome considering the timeframe and all. I'm a fan, honestly. A few suggestions if I may but I think a subtle camera shake for movement/steps would add more ambiance and authenticity to your game as it would make the player feel disoriented in a way that you would understand being no clipped out of reality and being inexplicably chased to death by entities. Another is that it would be really neat to add a stamina meter and running, crouching and crawling function to have a bit of a chance outrunning and outsmarting the entities. A limited flashlight might help too as they would ration its power throughout the levels and would create a lot of tension for levels that turns off its lights. Given that the flashlight's battery will eventually die out, it would give pressure and conflict whether they should use it or not as they progress in dark levels where entities spawn endlessly in the dark. A few in game voice lines might help too but that's optional. Well, needless to say that's just my opinion but it'd be a delight to see you add such. I'll be subscribing and will be waiting for more of your games, mate. Best wishes.
I like how with the partygoer it says “me at parties” but partygoers do something called “meat parties” where they make victims into cakes and eat them. And so when it says me at parties it looks like it says meat parties.
Can you please add the pattern sequence in level 1 that allows you to go immediately to the hub: 1. upon entry to level 1 walk directly forward in a straight line until you see a door, stop there. now double back to the entrance of the level 2. when you get back to where you entered you will see a diverging path going left or right 3. take the left 4. Repeat 2 and three but take the right 5. you will see to doors labelled a and b 6. take the b 7. same as 5 8 take the a door 9. Welcome to the hub 10. if any of these steps are done incorrectly take them to level ! or something like that xd
I just realised, Level 2 straight up looks like one that room that contains a server and pipes. I don’t get HOW it genuinely looks SCARIER than most backrooms levels, I’m 16 by the way. And I’ve read the genuinely terrifying ones, like that level only describable as home to everyone who enters and leaves (it’s literally called home), Mirror Lake High School (level 494), level 923 (I’ll put the first two letters of the I nitials to prevent spoilers: T.I.) (Really good at that existential dread, even despite what little content it has, the content it does have SHINES), that room that makes your mind so foggy that going outside it makes your mind feel clearer than everything else that contains nothing but a white void, a table a chair, and a door, and the One called Paradise (No.14), similar to Home in that it makes you believe things by hijacking your mind and perceptions, even long after you’ve left the levels, There’s also The White Room (different to the one I described, it makes you unwilling to leave, it beckons you, almost. In a way, it’s worse, it’s like you’re FORCED to be a horror protagonist, forced into its plot, even if you know otherwise. “The milky whites of the walls, floors, and ceilings communicate a sense of security and sanctuary within that is often lacking in levels similar to it. If this room were a person, you may be inclined to trust her with your life and to spill all of your well-kept secrets.”) Also, don’t forget -1, by proxy, because it needs to be in order to access The White Room. Also, Level 854, Home Sweet Home, Imagine a Narcissist, living with one, now imagine that narcissist wanted you to never wake up, at all costs, also, the bottom of the house is eternally ablaze, the floor is suspended in a state of forever burning down, the bottom is basically the flames themselves, the middle is smoggy as hell, and the top is where you start. Also, Exist Here, Level 994, as a little teaser, the only described exit is “Please just go back to where you came from, the tide is coming, you must leave before the tide comes.” 922. Depressingly lonely, nothing for you but a concrete staircase and the concrete room it occupies, no room for other things. May change in the future, it’s described as “it’ll stay this way for all of eternity… at least, until our perception of it molds to give it new life.” And hints that it may be rewritten soon. Level 972: If you trust a cult member, you will be brought to the land of the FALSE GOD, here’s an Excerpt from the first part “If the anomaly deems them "Holy," the person rises into the clouds above and will fall into Level 63. As a result of being "Holy," they will also find that extra supplies are now on themselves, ranging from Almond Water to other small items, like weapons and food. Even Royal Rations has been reported a few times. If it deems the person "a sinner," they will fall through the ground and land onto Level 666, which subsequently determines their fate from there.” And here’s an excerpt from the second part, when you dig deeper and find out that it’s not all Sunflowers and Daisies. “Level 972 takes the appearance of a destroyed world. People can hear the screams and shouts of humans at this level in significant distortion. This level has an entirely red sky that emits a gas, which stresses the wanderer quickly. One can become lost within level 972 quite easily, as there are hordes of entities blocking certain roads, meaning that traversing level 972 is almost impossible. What makes this worse is that wanderers must cross level 972. If they do not run constantly, they will be found by FALSE GOD. If they get caught, their fate from there is so dangerous that no wanderer has witnessed it without dying to it.” Also, “This entity is exclusive to this level, and it has the appearance of the wanderer's depiction of God. It has complete omnipotence and omniscience within this level. This being is only visible via individual hallucinations, allowing multiple wanderers in entirely different places to see it simultaneously, giving False God an apparent ability to be ubiquitous. This entity also can noclip wanderers in and out of this level. this entity is solely confined to this level, theorizing that false God is the level itself." This entity is the main threat of this level and essentially chases around wanderers. It knows the location of all wanderers in this level, and its speed is just barely slower than the average male running speed. This entity is exceptionally hostile and has complete sentience, although it cannot be reasoned with Other Entities including hounds, smilers, skin stealers, reviooks, deathmoths, clumps, and wranglers appear on this level regularly. Instances of Denizens have also been rumored, but the M.E.G has yet to confirm this.” Imagine running from your personal horror, who is really OMNISCIENT and knows exactly where you are and just forces you to run forever, until you die to it. Doesn’t matter if your friends are on this level, they can’t help you, at all, except possibly saving you from a surprise faceling here or there. Also, Cultists are trying to force you straight to the FALSE GOD. Fun. Anyway, how the HELL do the MEG get out of these impossible to exit levels to report back?
Theres actually a way out of the backrooms and the name of it is called "The Way Out" but its extremely rare to even come by because the chances of you coming across the exit is 1 in 1*10^-27 which is literally a number with 560 digits Also another thing is that "The End" isn't actually the final level its one of the trap levels the real final level is actually Level Level 9223372036854775807 and it is literally called "The True Final Level" and its just a gray staircase that goes on forever And a quick fun fact about The Way Out is that it comes in many forms but always has a bright yellow shining light blasting through it And a more fun fun fact about The Way Out is that when you actually enter it you don't immediately go back to reality you go into this type of the middle of the backrooms and reality some type of Midrooms and then slowly after it will turn back to normal back to reality So yeah thats it
if the odds are that low, how does it make sense for anyone to know of it in context of the backrooms universe? unless there was multiple people there, and how would they know it left to the normal world?

If you have the time, because the game's still going and you risk getting jumped, you can see footage of their journey in the backrooms before their death.

I hope there'll be a way to disable entities. Like someone else stated here: The truest horror is that of not knowing, and close calls.
It's a fine line between dying too often and making scary enemies lol.
Since the skills and ... well, uh... _intelligence_ of a player base vary wildly
That being said, just having a good ambience, and actually have *NO* creatures attack you, but expecting it all the time, that can actually be much scarier than being chased constantly.
A couple of games that did this perfect:
Alien Isolation . The whole game is perfect in regards to exposure/danger and ambience
Poppy's Playground with that initial vent chase; note that this is a long and very linear game, so the vent scene wasn't oversaturating the player with chases, and once happening, was terrifying.
SCP Containment Breach . Mainly terrifying because of the quality of monsters, randomness, and additional anomalies, and situation and goal, made it a great combo game.
There's not any more I really found that great or scary that I can remember.
I guess Dead Space and F.E.A.R. was terrifying too - the first ones I mean - because it was much uncharted territory back then, but I digress
Point is, the scariest part is expecting to be scared. And the longer time goes before that happens, the worse it is
Tbh, i think it needs a mix. Once you figure out nothing is chasing you, it gets kinda boring imo. You need a good mix of extreme ambience and isolation, combined with something horrifying chasing you, with good sound effects.
sir was the paragraph really necessary-
also to add: SCP containment breach and SCP Secret laboratory both have really good sound design
Him: "Not an environment artist" also him: Starts making an masterpiece

GOOD
Should add multiplayer where you can either have 2 players (have it where you can lose them hehe) or you can rarely see an online person.
Bye bye
multiplayer will consist of 19 working chunks of coding and thats not even mentioning other features so it would take a while like about 2months

I just realised, Level 2 straight up looks like one that room that contains a server and pipes.
I don’t get HOW it genuinely looks SCARIER than most backrooms levels, I’m 16 by the way. And I’ve read the genuinely terrifying ones, like that level only describable as home to everyone who enters and leaves (it’s literally called home), Mirror Lake High School (level 494), level 923 (I’ll put the first two letters of the I nitials to prevent spoilers: T.I.)
(Really good at that existential dread, even despite what little content it has, the content it does have SHINES), that room that makes your mind so foggy that going outside it makes your mind feel clearer than everything else that contains nothing but a white void, a table a chair, and a door, and the One called Paradise (No.14), similar to Home in that it makes you believe things by hijacking your mind and perceptions, even long after you’ve left the levels,
There’s also The White Room (different to the one I described, it makes you unwilling to leave, it beckons you, almost.
In a way, it’s worse, it’s like you’re FORCED to be a horror protagonist, forced into its plot, even if you know otherwise.
“The milky whites of the walls, floors, and ceilings communicate a sense of security and sanctuary within that is often lacking in levels similar to it. If this room were a person, you may be inclined to trust her with your life and to spill all of your well-kept secrets.”)
Also, don’t forget -1, by proxy, because it needs to be in order to access The White Room.
Also, Exist Here, Level 994, as a little teaser, the only described exit is “Please just go back to where you came from, the tide is coming, you must leave before the tide comes.”
If it deems the person "a sinner," they will fall through the ground and land onto Level 666, which subsequently determines their fate from there.”
And here’s an excerpt from the second part, when you dig deeper and find out that it’s not all Sunflowers and Daisies.
If they get caught, their fate from there is so dangerous that no wanderer has witnessed it without dying to it.”
Also,
“This entity is exclusive to this level, and it has the appearance of the wanderer's depiction of God. It has complete omnipotence and omniscience within this level. This being is only visible via individual hallucinations, allowing multiple wanderers in entirely different places to see it simultaneously, giving False God an apparent ability to be ubiquitous. This entity also can noclip wanderers in and out of this level. this entity is solely confined to this level, theorizing that false God is the level itself."
This entity is the main threat of this level and essentially chases around wanderers. It knows the location of all wanderers in this level, and its speed is just barely slower than the average male running speed. This entity is exceptionally hostile and has complete sentience, although it cannot be reasoned with
Other Entities including hounds, smilers, skin stealers, reviooks, deathmoths, clumps, and wranglers appear on this level regularly. Instances of Denizens have also been rumored, but the M.E.G has yet to confirm this.”
Imagine running from your personal horror, who is really OMNISCIENT and knows exactly where you are and just forces you to run forever, until you die to it.

And a quick fun fact about The Way Out is that it comes in many forms but always has a bright yellow shining light blasting through it
And a more fun fun fact about The Way Out is that when you actually enter it you don't immediately go back to reality you go into this type of the middle of the backrooms and reality some type of Midrooms and then slowly after it will turn back to normal back to reality
