Do women have head and backaches with wearing bra (even the right sized one) in thoracic outlet syndrome??
This may be possible but not a common cause. TOS can be caused by many things so we always adv a good assessment to work put the best treatment approach. All the best from the team
That first couple moments of this video about sleeping with the arm overhead was really an AH-HA moment for me, realizing how I am causing my shoulder pain to flare up like this. THANK you so much!
I used to sleep on the side with the bottom arm - the one next to the mattress - stretched out overhead, my head resting on the shoulder or the bizeps. This, along with me carrying bags with single shoulder straps for many years, I deem to be the main culprits in my struggles with TOS. I used to be a musician but sudden, intensifying pain in my hands, arms and later in the shoulders (mostly on the right - I'm a right hander) forced me to give up that vocation in 2020. I've only got diagnosed with TOS about three months ago (after years of fumbling in the dark) with a second, confirmatory assay performed just yesterday. Apparently I'm suffering from both neurogenic and arterial compression. Sucks.
Finally had a Eureka moment.. I wondered what had changed since my first TOS like flare up.. I had a heavy ass duffel and the strap was on my right shoulder and drove for 15+ hours. Ugh. So annoying. I’m going to do the exercise in this video.

I've been teaching online the past 18 months. Decided standing would be better for me, but started having tons of neck and upper back pain. I tried to have "good" posture which I also thought was shoulders back and down. Now I'm wondering if that has just been making it worse. Going to PT now but I'm not getting the answers I need. Going to try your suggestions and see what other videos you have related.

Do you recommend avoiding chest work whilst working on treating TOS? And also what about overhead shoulder pressing movements?
I would ease off the chest and make sure you give it a good stretch afterwards. Overhead should be fine and even help.

Will these exercises help if you have thoracic outlet syndrome and longstanding slouched posture?
Yes they may help but working on Thoracic extension would likely also help. I hope it helps.
Can a tear in the rotator cuff thats caused a drooped shoulder mimic the pain of thoracic outlet syndrome pain?
If the drooped shoulder is stretch the arm nerves then yes it could cause TOS. Any traction on the brachial plexus would trigger the symptoms.
I also read as well as the shrugs that the muscles that seem tight are weak so the traps as well as the scalene muscles need strengthening instead of stretching.
Yes that seems to be the case although most people would assume the opposite and convincing them otherwise is a skill.
Shrugs just make my neck and shoulders tighter; I'm dealing with fibromyalgia on top of TOS.
Can a c56 fusion that changes the degree of spinal curve contribute to TOS pain?
Will this help with venous tos?
If the scalenes are a cause of tos wouldn't shrugs cause them to become stronger?
Thank you for the comment. A slight elevation of the shoulders from an increase Trapezius activation may offload the brachial plexus and reduce strain on the scalenes. Its a neurobiomechanical/postural treatment plan. It is biologically plausible and worth trying with TOS.
From what I've learnt, a tight muscles tend to be a weak muscle because it can't maintain a good position that it should be in.
hey, very informative video. Can inverted row be a good exercise for tos? and should i stay away from chest exercise if i suffer from this? i think my case is mild because i feel improvement over 2 days. But those low shoulder killing my neck :(
Hi thank you for your comments. Train your upper back and avoid heavy bags over the shoulders that should help. See a good Physio if the issue continues.
@@ThePhysioChannel I can tell what already helped because my condition was much much worse.
My symptoms was :
-cold hand
-grip strenght weakness
-shoulder pain
-neck pain
What helped me :
-pec minor release with la cross ball
-chest stretch with PNF method
-lats stretch
-sleeper stretch
-upper trapezius strenghtening
=posterior delt strenghtening
-subclavius tissues release (with key to my garage lol)
-serratus anterior strenghtening with landmine press
Maybe someone find this useful, my condition is much better now compare to year ago, although my posture is still terrible, rounded upper back, forward head posture, hyperlordosis, but now I am aware of the problem and doing all exercises which can help fix my posture.
Szyszak hello. Ive been shoulder injured for 1 year now. Im 21 yo. Been through 3 PT’s and 2 ortopedic surgeons. The pain comes from my armpit when laying/standing up with my hands behind my head and exhaling. Could it be TOS?
@@simonhj7813 I dont think it's TOS, I think it's subscapularis injury. Try out sleeper stretch like this :
