    Amazing stuff, I was trying a Valve distorstion pedal on my synths these days and you appesr with this. AWESOME DUDE. In my short experience, for distorition to kick in on a synth wave (triangle, sine, any basically) you need to push the resonance high and set cutoff mid to low, and find the sweet spot of gnarl by raising slowly the freq cut (303 basic old stuff) I do this with a microbrute and lots of fuzz or distortion pedals and works wonderfully

    That sounds awesome, that radio rules. You could get an FM transmitter and use it as a wireless patch cable :D I love the sound of valves. Funny (not so much for me, but anywhom) how I'm like fixing to build a 9v noob modular with (almost just) a square wave and a distortion (because I simply LOVE square waves and I had a distortion pedal that I used on a old organ that was in a flat I used to live in) :/ Lucky me I've been scrapping for parts to make some of the simplest oscilators you showed us, so maybe it'll not be for nothing aftersall. I think this VCA will be like the first 12v thing I'll do, for when I start realizing that 9v isn't respecting my artistic integrity or something, because I just love the sound of filters and valves. Cheers

  • @zaphodb5361

    Hi Sam, great video. I had a look at the schematic and what struck me is that the bypass switch shorts the output of U2. Looking at the specs of the TL071 it appears to have a short circuit protection system build in, so because of that you won't blow out the opamp. I have one suggestion though. You might change the bypass switch into a double on. When in bypass mode, you could disconnect the tube's heating. Especially if you modular has a lot of tubes and they are not in use all the time, this may conserve quite a bit of power. It would take away the nice glow of the tubes though.

    I’m loving the rabbit hole of gorilla synths I found with you. However, if I could make a suggestion, as both a seasoned guitarist and synth tweaker, you should consider placing the tubes inward. They break easy. It’d be true horror show if a misplaced knob tweak snagged against one and it busted. Also, best not to touch them if it can be avoided. As the snobs say, it decays lifespan. Keep it up dude, you rock.

I’d appreciate any guidance you can offer, thanks Sam and keep doing what you do!!

    I'm in the process of building a power supply for my new solderless breadboad I bought from my local Jaycar Electronics store recently, the power supply will be able to supply up to +/- 15V DC at up to 1.3A, both the + and - V are independently variable, once I know it is working like it is supposed to, I will be using it to test my Safety Valve Tube VCA module build and verify if it works, I will also be using the power supply and solderless breadboard to check that all the other modules I'm building for my big modular synth, work as they're supposed to, if not, I'll be able to mod the circuits to get them working right.

  • @simonkormendy849
    @simonkormendy849 2 роки тому

    Okay, so I managed to finish building my new solderless breadboard power supply last night, worked perfect first time I switched it on, no loud bangs, smoke, or other abnormal behaviour, anyway, I used it to test-out my Safety Valve Tube VCA build, but my build didn't work as I expected it to, so I'll need to do some debugging, one thing I did notice is that the 12AX7 tube I was using seemed like it wasn't getting enough heater voltage, in the schematic, the current limiting resistor for the Tube Heater, R5, is a 27 Ohm resistor, after doing some experimentation with other resistor values, I have found that R5 needs to be at least a 14 Ohm/5W resistor (15 Ohms/5W should work fine) in order to get about 12.6V on pins 4 and 5 of the 12AX7 Tube (it needs 12.6V at 150mA to heat the two cathodes to the correct operating temperature), if you're powering the module off a +/- 15V supply, one other mod to the Safety Valve Tube VCA that I could recommend doing is to put a 47nF (473, or .047) capacitor (it's an arbitrary value I chose that seems to work well enough, you could even increase it to let more bass through) in between pin 6 of the 12AX7 Tube and R7 (the 150k resistor going from pin 3 of U2 (TLO71) to ground, doing this gets the TLO71 IC (U2) biased properly so that pin 6 of the TLO71 IC (U2) is sitting at 0V like it should be, rather than +11V, since U2 seems to be being used as an amplifier to bring the output signal on pin 6 of the 12AX7 Tube, according to the schematic, we want it to amplify without distortion, so that we get distortion from the Tube rather than the IC, so, the TLO71 IC needs to be properly biased so that pin 6 sits at 0V, one other thing I noticed with my Tube VCA build is that when in Bypassed mode, I don't seem to get any output-signal, so I'm going to re-wire the bypass switch so that it works properly, one more thing I noticed with my build is that it will self-oscillate at some point when you turn-up the level control, I'm going to see what I can do to fix that, one more thing, the Overkill switch doesn't seem to work as expected, when switched on, there is no output signal so one more thing for me to fix, this is not necessarily a bad thing, this is what actually makes DIY electronics a fun hobby, tweaking things to get a circuit working better.
