The resistor is for current limiting - if you don't add it, the LEDs will continue to increase drawing current until they burn out / flatten the battery.
Seeing stuff like this makes me think maybe I can take a swing at something like that if it ever comes up. Thanks for another great year of videos and Merry...er, Happy Christmas!
Whack a molex connector on it and then you can disconnect it and leave the wreath up while charging! You can also use the battery on other projects through the year - Easter lights, Summer solstice?! Lights, Halloween..... the possibilities are endless! Stupid comment.......
@@theana86ar Never, but most absolutely never, use a barrel plug on anything under any circumstance. More devices have been fried from using the wrong barrel plug adaptor than from any other reason. You're setting yourself or your kids up to fail.
Steve, you could consider making the battery pack pluggable to enable you to remove it from the wreath when xmas is over - you can then keep it at a nominal charge throughout the year. I also read somewhere that Lithiums do not like very low temperatures. You could protect the electronics charger board with nail varnish or something similar to help it survive the elements.
really good fix steve, the comments here are brilliant and amusing, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, to you, Your Dearest and Dave, and of course to all your watchers Patreons and Subscribers.
I did pretty much the same job yesterday, with a battery powered Roland guitar amp. It works well. Not seen the end of the video yet, but i'm hoping you're gonna find some method of waterproofing the USBC charging port 🤔
I did exactly the same thing with the exact same hardware, but for my LED plant lamps. Something to look out for: I got a few bad batteries. 2 out of 3 started bulging and lost a lot of capacity. Replaced them out of spite with completely different ones with even more capacity. Also look out for the charging chip on those boards. It gets REALLY hot...
If it wasn’t for the spy glass on the front door, I’d have been worried that Steve was at my house lol, as I’ve the same door, reef and camera doorbell!!
The USB will fit, but only the actual metal USB part. The cable plastic end may have a problem with clearance. It's good to see old parts getting new life.
Great video as always. Noticed the EUFY doorbell. I went to an E340 but it was so damn slow in terms of response I ended up going back to Ring. It was almost impossible to respond to someone ringing the doorbell without it taking so long they'd ended up leaving.
If you want this to last many years you need to put the resistor back in or calculate one to give 15-20mA. Some el-cheapo LED items just put the LED straight across a battery, but they end up drawing too much current like this and the LEDs burn out in the end. LEDs should always be used with a current limiting resistor or a special current limiting chip. Hope this is of use. Merry Christmas and thanks for another year of fun to watch videos.
Hi Steve love your videos since I found them on yt, I thought you would have put the charging port a little closer to the edge then cut a piece out. But all in all a fantastic fix. Would like to see one more before Christmas.👊🏾
You can get DC-DC Boost Modules of the fleaBay that'll take the input volts to to what the circuit needs. For example I have one that boosts the 5V input to 12V for running a couple of computer fans.
Steve with battery pack black cables the one with white on it is the positive. It is lucky you did not blow the lights with connecting them the wrong way round.
Get real Jiggy with it and add in a Light sensor so it comes on when it gets dark!! LUV YOU MAN!!! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! And Thank You for all your Videos!! PS THERE ARE NO TREES IN BATTERIES.... LOL
Happy Holidays, delightful as always, curious though how u would 'charge' it, ie presume u would need to remove the whole wreath, or is it that the battery will now last the whole holiday? As others noted, a timer or sensor would be 'fancy'. Look forward to part deux :)
Lipo bateries go from about 4.2V when fully charged to about 3.3V when discharged. Go lower than that and you risk damaging it. Higher and you risk blowing them up
Let's hope it doesn't rain - lithium batteries and water 😬😬 If it doesn't go on fire you could add a tiny 5v boost thing and that'll keep the lights bright until the battery protection cuts in
Amazing fix, I have used old discarded vape batteries in the past. Would like to know the charger board you used. This could make all 4.5v devices rechargeable.... Merry Xmas Steve 😊
It needs a daylight detector to turn it off and on automatically.
Yes! What a great idea! Thanks Jeffrey!
LDR inline with the positive (I think)
Let’s see that.
@@StezStixFix Make it so, what a good upgrade idea. :) Maybe after Christmas though as it's a bit tight for time now.
Really good idea Jeff.

On the fourth day of Fixmas, Steven fixed for thee, a wreath he upgraded to recharge eas-ily~
🤣🤣👏👏👏👏
Time to get a 3dprinter, and create your own housing for the battery!
Steve with the primitive wire strippers... LOL Love it
Seeing stuff like this makes me think maybe I can take a swing at something like that if it ever comes up. Thanks for another great year of videos and Merry...er, Happy Christmas!
Sure you can
I love the fact you’ve got the time to give us more videos, it’s like an early Christmas present 👍
Whack a molex connector on it and then you can disconnect it and leave the wreath up while charging! You can also use the battery on other projects through the year - Easter lights, Summer solstice?! Lights, Halloween..... the possibilities are endless! Stupid comment.......
Was about to say the same, except to use barrel plug...
@@theana86ar Never, but most absolutely never, use a barrel plug on anything under any circumstance. More devices have been fried from using the wrong barrel plug adaptor than from any other reason. You're setting yourself or your kids up to fail.
a nice little tweak to the project would be a solar charging set up.
I really like the way you think about alternatives for your projects. Enjoy the Holiday's.
What a smashing looking blouse, Steve.
??? Who let Rik Mayall in?
"Its a dress!"
Didn't notice the blouse. Had to watch again 😂😂😂😂😂
Excellent work! LiPo's really hate the cold though, so just be aware that you'll get degraded performance and could risk fire if it really gets cold.

Happy Christmas Steve!
I have the exact same repair to do. Thanks for the great idea!
Where i live, an airtag would be a wise addition 😂
😂
Merry Christmas to you and Dave and the Wife
MIXING BATTERIES IS 'NAUGHTY' , MAN !!!!!!😂🎉❤🙏
Those Kirkland batteries are great, except in my experience they leaker than a colander of leeks that are desperate for a leak.
Yeah, I found the same. Went back to Duracell.
i love convertions like these, please do more in the future.
I think I'm going to order a bunch of those USB-C thingies... they are actually very useful for hacks like this.
go with ip2312, tp4056 as shown here tends to heat up when plugged to usb, although the latter is a bit expensive
Hahaha. Lovely video. Beautiful wreath thing. Enjoy the festive times!!
😍 cheers Devtty, you too!
Merry Christmas, Steve (and Dave)!
Hey Steve, you should put a photo sensor in place of the key so the device would only turn on at dusk. Thanks a lot, big hug.

Great vid, I just wanted to say good reef. 😉
Have a good Christmas, and happy new year!
Love the Rwik tee shirt. Smelly Christmas. ✌️🎅
The resistor is there to limit the current. It serves the same function as when you set a current limit on your power supply.
Thanks acid! Makes perfect sense 👍
Kirkland batteries? KIRKLAND? 🤣 (merry Christmas Steve)
Brilliant, love it.
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
If it wasn’t for the spy glass on the front door, I’d have been worried that Steve was at my house lol, as I’ve the same door, reef and camera doorbell!!
It took me far too long to realise it was sat on your mat and not your door. I was thinking what a lovely coloured front door you have. Oh.
You made a right kerfullel of that! Happy Christmas!
Merry Christmas Steve.
Merry Xmas Steven to you and yours🎄
The USB will fit, but only the actual metal USB part. The cable plastic end may have a problem with clearance. It's good to see old parts getting new life.
It would be cool to add a photo light sensor... that way it turns on and off by itself XD
awesome video, happy holidays!
Merry Christmas to you and yours, special Merry Christmas to Dave, I hope you spoil him.. love your work. Keep it up … 🤙🏼🇦🇺
Joe from Australia 🤙🏼🇦🇺
P.S what happened to the RAP???? Missing it
Kirkland batteries? Costco operates in the UK? I did not know that. Somehow never seen one.
Don't buy them they are made by duraleak I had a pack and they were well in date and they'd leaked, previous to that they ruined my digital camera
Loving the T shirt too 👍🏻
Living on the edge ! Slashing through those wires with scissors with total disregard for the millivolts which could be surging from those dead cells !
Somebody get this man a dremel and some wire strippers for Christmas...
Great video as always.

did I see a little short/spark there?!

Maybe a timer 8 hrs on 16 hrs off, you can get sets that use it quite cheaply, thanks Steve really enjoyed it….😊
Great stuff. Next year, extend it with a photoresistor so that it turns on automatically when it's dark. :D
Merry Xmas mate . Thanks for all the videos wishing you and fam and more stupid fixes in 2025 ❤
What a wreath you managed to repair it 😂
Can you do the same for our lights too. My Wife and I wish we had an Off switch for our Christmas lights. 😁👍
I've been doing this for years. I use 18650 batteries. They work well on Halloween ghosty things too.
Steve finally realised that B+ and B- go to the battery, not the +5V output 😂

This was a plastic burning opportunity. Merry Christmas!
Not that we get much sun in winter but a rechargeable one with a very efficient solar panel and ideal conditions might be an interesting experiment.
Judging by your t-shirt you've having sprouts mexican this Xmas. Nice.
Who needs StezStix Fix when you can get an extra dose of StezStix Engineering on a Monday? Merry Christmas, everyone! 🎄🎄
Nice job!!
You could buy one of those usbc silicone plugs they sell foe mobile phones to keep moisture out of the port
The battery and spring are “S O L I D!”
Hey Steve, what's the little rotary tool you're using?
Great idea Steve try to have a fun Christmas. 🫥
Take batteries out and put the whole holder/contacts in kettle descaler, works a treat

I love this fix. It’s the sort of thing I might do 😂
Shame it got nicked overnight....Merry Christmas Steve.
Merry Christmas :)

Merry Christmas 🎄🎁👾 🕹️
Καλά Χριστούγεννα!
Happy Mary ding dong!! 🙏❤💪
You need a 3D Printer Steve! Could have made your own custom box ❤❤ merry Christmas 🎁
Merry Bloody Christmas!
I was betting you would make the orientation of the switch different to the writing on the case but you proved me wrong. Is it a christmas miracle ?
No music?? That's the whole reason I'm here. Bah humbug
Marry Christmas
What's the link for the usb grinding thing?
How many evenings does it last before needing to come inside to recharge?
I don't know what you're talking about but I'd trust you with my gran.
Let's hope it doesn't rain - lithium batteries and water 😬😬 If it doesn't go on fire you could add a tiny 5v boost thing and that'll keep the lights bright until the battery protection cuts in
Steve, buy a pair of automatic wire strippers for Santa's sake.
yes yes that's quite allright!!
How long does the battery last on it?
Add a motion detector and a mini sound box so it can scream at people who approach your front door!
After Christmas when you put your wreath away until next year will a rechargeable battery still charge after not being charged for a year ?
Stored at half charge it will be fine. Merry Xmas stez.🎄🎄🎁🎁
Amazing fix, I have used old discarded vape batteries in the past. Would like to know the charger board you used. This could make all 4.5v devices rechargeable.... Merry Xmas Steve 😊
TP4056 USBC
Make the battery pack detachable. So you can leave the decorations on the door while charging.
