    X4: Foundations is the latest title in the popular X series of space simulation / sandbox games, played as action games from a first-person perspective in a living breathing universe, with TRADE FIGHT BUILD THINK as the common tag-line. X4: Foundations is unique in its depth, simulating an entire universe of NPC ships and stations, forming a realistic economy. It consists of a huge universe, simulated from the bottom up. Hundreds of stations, and thousands of ships, trade goods among themselves. Prices change based on supply and demand; resources are mined and processed in several stages. This economy is linked directly to the simulation of major conflicts in a universe with dynamically-acting factions. Every player decision can dramatically change the future of the game universe. Step in and live your very own space adventure!

    I always try to give my ships a crew whenever I can afford it. I've noticed that my transporters always have a higher chance of survival against pirates when they have a crew. Hell, I had a pirate ship blow up something I was flying, but I had a transport ship swoop in to save me and they did a much better job than I did in fighting. Crew is definitely worth it, IMO.

    • @Neoplasmer

      That might be due to the fact that service crew operate turrets (or at least I think it used to).

  • @donjonson1748

    To make it clear how the whole thing works in the game...
    1. The repair does NOT scale with the number of service men. Not for now, anyway.
    2. The repair does scale with the number of service men if the ship has repair drones. And also with the number of repair drones.
    3. The repair does scale with the number of total crew men. And I need to elaborate on that a little bit...
    Each ship has a value "crew skill". It doesn't matter if they are Marines or Service, they all count. If a place is empty, this place also counts, but with 0 points. Empty so always bad.
    The combined skill of the entire crew determines how well the ship is repaired, how effectively it mines, how long it takes to find an job ect.
    *Bonus*
    The skill of the pilot and the morale of each also counts to the crew skill. That is why a crew repairs the ship better when the player himself controls the ship. Because the player has completely max skill points. Morale is then another issue, it too is higher when the player is on board.
    Before, until version 2.0, the skill had massive influence on the flight behavior of a ship. But unfortunately, players didn't understand that. There were many complaints about stupid flight behavior. It was about removed from the game with 2.0. At that time, the difference was extremely visible even in a boarding pod. A marine with bad pilot skill had hardly any chance to reach his target and was shot down very easily. Back then you had to destroy all the turrets when boarding. Today that is hardly important.

    • @Altair1243WAR
      @Altair1243WAR 2 роки тому

      I mean, considering how stupid the AI is today, at least at times, & considering how long it takes to actually TRAIN said pilots I'd agree it needs to be removed or at least heavily nerfed. To begin with it sounds like a cool idea but you can't make something so frustrating to get also extremely important

    • @JKNinja
      @JKNinja  2 роки тому +1

      As far as I can tell salvaging is meant as a side grade, not a replacement for factories. Since it relies on wrecks the output is highly variable which makes repeatable testing really hard to setup. But is there something particular about salvaging that you would like further explained?

    • @dethoza
      @dethoza 2 роки тому +1

      @@JKNinja Actually right after posting this I realized that a salvaging station needs solid storage space for the tug boats to pull scrap to it :D
      that was all that was missing *facepalm*
      But yeah you are right about how hard it probably is to create test cases for this. Additionally I assume crew count doesn't change the efficiency of the tug boats a lot, since they don't really have to maneuver a lot.

    I noticed that service crew had level up when ship self repaired. And the damaged captured ships are also repaired up to sometimes 75%, even 90%. And my damaged miner ship had 100% repaired. I have noticed, that service crew can make essential repairs and save your shops in danger zones. And the crew trains while in service, so you can make them trained captains for new ships or better managers for new stations. And having some marines on bord change the fighting behavior or stats if you are not in sector. So yeah basically no need, but if you can get some, go for it 😉

  • @MurseSamson
    @MurseSamson Рік тому

    It probably stands to reason that better service crew in a larger crew complement, would allow you to move faster through multi-sector trading in sectors with asteroids and busy traffic. So maybe that would be better for multi-sector trading. (Although that would be very difficult to prove numerically - maybe the best way is just to track the length of a trip in time from one set place to another.)

    It makes a bigger difference if you're in the system they are trading in as well. It's not a common case as most will be out of your system for part of their trading if not always.

    I'd recommend using crew for traders for two reasons:
    1. If the ship is ever damaged it will be able to repair itself.
    2. It allows you to train Able service crew for combat ships.
    One strategy I use is to have my large universe traders have a full crew roster and when I make new combat ships I fill them with new recruits. Then I swap the able service crew from the traders with the new recruits from the shipyard. This allows the new combat ships to come right out of the dock with an able crew and lets the recruits train passively on the traders.

    Glad you're back to X4. But how about races? XML files confirm that there are different piloting "styles" for each race, so it's possible that other roles might differ as well. There are claims that the paranid might have a bonus for engineering, but I can't seem to find any evidence to confirm or deny the rumor. Might be a "fun" idea for part 4.

    • @JKNinja
      @JKNinja  2 роки тому

      I've seen the XML with the scripts "dogfight 1, dogfight 2" etc, but it looks to me more dependent on pilot skill. Admittedly I could be reading it wrong

      I was referring to the "So Pilots ... Gospel from developers on them?" thread on egosoft forums, after looking though XML again it seems like it affects whether dogfight 1 or 2 is used, along with having certain weights for each disengagement option. Fun stuff, might be dated as it was accurate for 3.0

    Can you test the same thing with a different selection of wares? I remember a dev post on the Egosoft forum from way back when, saying that simply selecting all the wares is not a good way to go about it. I believe he suggested that for optimal outcome, a single ship should only focus on about 4-6 types of wares. This would allow you to prevent it from wasting its time on food delivery, when there's more profitable stuff to be had at the same time. Also, the volume of the traded wares should be matched to the overall size of the cargo hold. So don't let an S hauler auto-trade in bulky goods like Scanning Arrays for example.

    Ran these numbers through the same quick spreadsheet calc I just mentioned in the previous video... with similarly interesting results. Both crewed ships had greater standard deviation than the uncrewed ship. The base crew had 50% greater deviation while the elite crew only went up by 22% compared to the uncrewed ship. Given the trivial gains in the average I don't think I'd use a crew unless I planned to spend a fair bit of time in risky areas. A single run would be too much of a gamble. You can see this in the charts in the video plain as day. three of the five sets of runs the elite crew made were lower yield than the uncrewed ship. Would the uncrewed ship outperform the elite crew 60% of the time over the long haul? Maybe not. But why send out a ship that has a 60% chance of doing worse than another ship?

  • @Neoplasmer

    Thanks for uploading these tests JK Ninja, I'm curious if Pilot level would affect traders running the same set-up (i.e. between 0, rank 1, and rank 3/4) with everything else being equal, maybe if the range was set to 1-system it would have a greater effect? or perhaps it has a bigger effect over a slightly longer time period (15-20 Minutes in SETA). Reasoning being was that while there wasn't significant gains, there did appear to be a statistically weak, yet positive correlation between having crew and not having crew. (like 0.1 or 0.2 (10-20% correlation).
    Also curious if Service crew improve fighter-craft sized vehicles at all. I always run 1 on a ship I'm personally using (1 if a fighter, max if anything bigger, and then mostly service crew w/ some marines on whatever my dedicated boarding craft is (currently a Raptor carrier thanks to your video about how dope the raptor is).

    • @JKNinja
      @JKNinja  2 роки тому +2

      The regular crew actually performed better than the elite crew, so any gains were most likely due to random chance.
