  • In this guide for X4 Foundations 4.20 I go over a few reasons on why you would want to choose a large trader over the more common medium trader variants. From bulk trading to boarding there are a few niches where the bigger ships are best.

    X4: Foundations is the latest title in the popular X series of space simulation / sandbox games, played as action games from a first-person perspective in a living breathing universe, with TRADE FIGHT BUILD THINK as the common tag-line. X4: Foundations is unique in its depth, simulating an entire universe of NPC ships and stations, forming a realistic economy. It consists of a huge universe, simulated from the bottom up. Hundreds of stations, and thousands of ships, trade goods among themselves. Prices change based on supply and demand; resources are mined and processed in several stages. This economy is linked directly to the simulation of major conflicts in a universe with dynamically-acting factions. Every player decision can dramatically change the future of the game universe. Step in and live your very own space adventure!

    Large traders are great. When you work out the right commodities, they also make excellent choices for auto-traders; bringing in your odd million here and there while the rest of your operations give you a more consistent flow of credits.

    I personally use the L traders to buy out Claytronics and Hull Parts in prep for building stations so I can stockpile some of the required construction wares and ferry them en masse to the build storage. And for stations that sell a lot of high value wares (again Hull Parts and Claytronics are prime examples) for the same reason you mentioned with the ware reservations.

    Large traders are really good for moving high value cargo, because they're more resistant to pirating. I use them for ferrying anything more expensive than microchips. Microchips seem to be a good ware to move with a large trader, because you can usually buy silicon wafers and sell them to microchip factories in massive bulk and make 400k within a single sector. Then buy microchips, move the next sector, sell them. Buy another heap of silicon wafers, sell them again to the microchip factory. I do this in teladi space, which seems to work for my instance. Another good thing about microchips, is that their demand plummets after a large volume sell off and takes forever to rebuild. It works for large traders really well.

    L ships are great for building, too. There's one war mission type that has you build a small base (10 turrets, a couple of small storage containers, and a small dock) which you can easily do with one L trade ship. It's an easy 3 million credits, over and over.
    Also, you can drive L traders (and warships) *FAR* faster than AI pilots. AI pilots teleport through gates then meander around on the other side for a minute or two before moving on. You can hit the gate with your travel drive on and you'll be flying at the same speed on the other side of the gate. If you use control-space, you can point your ship toward the next gate and get back to travel speed quickly, too.
    I wonder if you might be better off with no weapons on an L trader other than laser towers? Two or three of those should be able to pull agro off your trader, leaving the trader free to run away.

Just made a hundred traders group with mimic command and they job now to gather food and meds from my remote factories. My big tech factories had problem with getting the food. Mining groups outside and trade stations helps the effort better than factories with miners.

    450 hrs in, finally watching some guides. I always used large traders as they could survive Xen and Khak until a rescue force could be sent in. Now I have >seventy stations in four sectors I use one large and one small trader per station (stations all >6 prod modules).
    The best use for large traders is setting up defence platforms in hostile space. You need stuff there fast, so the big hull part and turret part orders comes with them.
    Fave large traders - Antigone Shuyaku Sentinel and MOF Heron Sentinel. Always set to drop laser towers and run. Only troubles are destroyer pirates and only if you are notified when they are right on top. Max engines will get away from most destroyers in time, but sometimes you roll snake eyes.
    I'll always board and steal pirate destroyers and add to my fleet, so its at worse 1 for 1 trade.

    Large freighters are the backbone of my little space empire. They're much more efficient at filling requirements for station construction and shipbuilding, where you often need to move very large quantities of resources, and require a lot less micromanagement. They're also far less likely to get ganked by a passing pirate ship or xenon raiding group. I primarily use medium freighters for factory-assigned traders and most autonomous traders (guarded by a fast corvette in the latter case), and have six or so large ones on hand to fill in any shortages that I want to handle manually. They're rarely idle.

  • @johnterpack3940
    @johnterpack3940 2 роки тому +1

    It really depends on the volume of goods you need to move. A fast medium ship that has to make six round trips to deliver the materials will be slower than a large ship that can haul it all at once. One large ship may also be cheaper than the equivalent fleet of medium ships.

    I use bigger ship for almost exactly the same reason. Research materials are hard to gather after a certain point. An L-class makes this task easier. Aside from certain transport missions I use them for mining and high risk trading routes as they are better suited for a feisty encounter with the cockroaches or some greedy pirates. I usually go for a full FLAK/beam layout with some laser tower on top. If possible I send along some escort ship just for good measure, but that depends on the game stage. Early on i cannot afford to do so.
    I prefer vast station builds. Right now I'm building a new shipyard with over 100.000 people working right know. It's a very long and hard task but I try to do something different each time. As always.. thanks for the upload.

    A great use for small traders, or actually, whatever ship that has the LEAST cargo space (but not zero), and is fast:
    Use them to farm favor. You get an incremental increase of favor with a faction whenever any trade action completes. The size or value of the trade action doesn't matter. When farming for favor, lots and lots of tiny, fast trades are what you want.
    Build a little ship, and then use your map to ideally find a commodity that is both in high supply and high demand at two stations within the desired faction that are close to each other. Then use a Repeat Order to buy and sell that commodity. I typically set the max buy price to max, and the min sell price to min, because I don't care if I lose money. I want favor, and I don't want my favor farmer to stall, and since the trades are so small, the maximum money I could lose is minimal.
    With a tiny cargo hold, you are much more likely to avoid exhausting the supply/demand, and with fast engines you get more trades in.
    If it does stall due to no supply or no demand, just add new orders, either for the same commodity at other stations, or for another commodity.
    Get them setup early and let them farm away while you are building other infrastructure.

    • @dbrowdy
      @dbrowdy 2 роки тому +3

      To expand on this, you can set the max quantity to buy to 1, which will give you the same rep, lose you less money, and never cause supply and demand to change. It's kinda cheesy but it works great!

And about very couple hours doing mass medical supplies trade run more than enough makes more lucrative profit in Teladi space. And I did pick up that buy at the current price with x amount stays that amount for that transaction period. I even abuse the system by locking in the prices for the contract so the price doesn't fluctuate in the next hours or so on the other runs.

    my HQ is an unholy conclomeration of things to make it self sufficient and be a wharf, and ive found large traders to be exceptionally useless half the time, since the manager makes them leave with not even half their storage full. BUT they dont die to most any pirates so far. Ive been using tons of magpie sentinels for their largest S class cargo space, to make tons of the smaller trips, with a couple Ms and Ls for larger trips. And it works ok. Its also nice to have a couple Ls around to come along for boarding the occasional pirate Destroyer, or to make the rare player intervention for buying or selling something in bulk.

    As far as traders, or any civilian ships go, I kinda steer clear from medium ships. For miners, large ones are good cos they can ignore kha'aks up until there are over 30 of them. Shield recharge makes smaller swarms do negative damage, especially cos I like to use teladi cranes. They have the largest cargo of any L miner that also has 3 shields. Boron L miners are also pretty good in my opinion.
    As far as wreighters go, in my first playthrough I mostly had boron wreighters, they had solid speed and cargo capacity. The problem was sometimes they ran up to SCA phoenixes and got blown to bits if I was not there to fix the situation. Now on my second playthrough I kinda don't have a huge fleet of ships and I focused more on the stations and I let the NPC factions come and buy stuff from me. What little hauling I need to do, like supply my HQ researches or whatnot, I use Barbarossas exclusively and nothing else. Bought from the VIG shipyard, they come with argon L engines and they have over 6000 m/s travel speed making them really fast, but the cargo is on a smaller side, only 21k. Still, other wreighters being a lot slower and having 30 to 50k cargo, I think it's worth is. Especially because barbarossas are not wreighters, they are scavengers. Basically, think of barbarossa as a destroyer that traded main guns into a whole lot more cargo space. Still comes with 114k hull, 4 L and 10 M turrets, and as far as my experience goes, pirates never harass them. Barbarossa also comes with very large crew capacity, enough to board almost any ship in the game apart from a few XL ships. Another ship that can be used just like I'm using barbarossa is Shark. 35k cargo, carrier, and extremely fast (for xl ship) makes it a good "wreighter" to go build stations in hostile territory, especially if you bring a fighter wing to encourage xenon to stay away.

      I don't use escorts. The reason being the game is poorly polished and optimized and the way the A.I works is best example. So on paper it looks awesome but then you get into the problem that your L ship will constantly slow down or stop to wait for the subordinates, often the small ships will use highway or get behind when the L ship goes through a gate, at best it will double the time it takes for the L trader to do the run. Then you also have the problem of logistics, instead of building tons of escorts or paying for tons of them to escort each trader and make them much less efficient, why not use the escorts to patrol or police sectors especially places where your miners go to mine, that's much more reliable.

    Actually, large trading ships are good for contract jobs and trade deals where their cargo is filled to the max surpassing more than what's needed. The smaller trading ships handle the left overs. While the smaller trading ships are still busy, the larger ships deliver the exact amount needed to the client and then sell the rest that's left in the cargo. This is the full trading job for the client. Also, it's always good to buy wares the client station produces so that other stations can get the goods they need on the way back. A good trader never travels empty handed.

      @@Salac0 Youre right.
      Let me elaborate:
      In the east split terretory, is a silent war between split factinons plus some pressure from the xenon. You are allowed to attack split ships from the other faction (south sectors) without any penalty. This means piracy is a peace of cake.
      Those ships have 8 M class turrets and 1 L class fusion cannon. (the Buffalo)
      But from there on, you have a multyrole fleet, capable of taking down enemy fleets with superiour L class capabilities, and if you want to do something else, you can let them default back to the traiding, you set up for them.
      I just love them, because of all those things above. And because they look really cool.
      I tryed not to spoil everything ;P
      So be prepared for a hard ass war campain playing the rebel split faction or come to visit the outer rim split sectors. Blood and gore awaits you, in the endless darkness of space. ^^
      (if you start as the rebel split, just get some kristals until you can buy an M class ship, or else you have no chance)

    Large traders also offer more defensibility than M traders. When a pair of Xenon fighters are harassing you, 12 turrets are better than 1 or 2 - those fighters can easily destroy an M trader but will BE easily destroyed by L - so consider the locations you're supplying and travelling through when choosing between M and L.

And the target was not even the military ship, just a builder. Btw game calculator showed my boarding strength 2 times higher and green success probability, but every single game load they failed. Then I found a way to abuse boarding with teladi mining ships. Long and tedious, but 100% safe stealing of 2m Cr ships. I hate boarding in this game, it is insanely unbalanced.

    I found out they did nothing. It exploded. I even stayed 10 minutes or so after that to see if they arrive late. no one ever came.
    The responses of factions actually really suck in this game when it comes to defending themselves
    But if I attack it, holy crap the entire universe would want my head and everything from everywhere will come to kill me.

    Once I have enough money to buy L traders and miners, I never go back to M. Less clutter on the screen, less casualties OOS because they can take a pounding, and moves more stuff with each trip. L traders and miners shrug off any Kha'ak attacks too, at least that I've seen in my 450+ hours of play.
    May be less efficient due to no highway travel, but I don't care when I can have less ships and less of them destroyed.

    I play VRO, and I use them because they're thicc. To be honest, that's a valid reason in vanilla too. It's harder for xenon or khaak raids to down a large ship OOS than it is for them to down a smaller one. I'd actually considered using full combat ships for trading roles just because I was tired of losing things to the khaak.

      Have you looked at the Cormorant from MIN? It's listed as a transporter so will still be attacked by pirates but it has the firepower of a gunboat. Against Kha'ak and smaller Xenon raiding parties its able to fight them off

    • @williamrodriguez8957
      @williamrodriguez8957 2 роки тому

      @@JKNinja That may be the case, but I never had taken the time to rank up the ministry until I was already playing VRO. VRO mediums struggle against raids so hard that the Xenon were able to overrun both split factions when I wasn't looking. On my current VRO save I have hundreds of small and medium miners in the asteroid belt that are outfitted with war grade turrets whilst also being supported by a terran patrol carrier LOADED with fighters and I still lose at least half a dozen ships to Khaak raids per hour because I use SETA a lot. I checked my factories once on a whim and discovered that the Khaak had managed to take out every gas miner on one of the two important factories I had that was pumping materials into my wharf.
      It gets so bad that I had a Khaak raid take out a Hokkaido once. Hokkaidos are pretty big.
      Truth be told, I hate losing ships. On my first run I didn't really make real money for a very long time, and I was getting screwed by pirates regularly in Teladi space. Losing a medium transport knocked me down 1 million dollars usually and I never really notice that they were dead half the time until I noticed a supply issue. I found it easier to run with the larger ships since they almost never died to xenon or even pirates if I set the AI right. Additionally, pirates always attack large transport ships with destroyers. Every time I got jumped, I just boarded the offending destroyer and made loads of money selling it off.
