Always saw the moving Slaters in as the beginning of a brand new era for the EastEnders. Brand new family, never before mentioner or even alluded to, but made immediate and lasting impact even to this day.
I think it was pretty much round this point I started watching EastEnders regularly. I'd seen bits of it now and again before hand, but never really got into it properly til around this point. Don't watch it anymore though as I eventually started finding it depressing years later and lost interest.

I think that The Slaters, Truemans and Taylors are going to be one of the most memorable Families that arrived in the 2000's. What's so eerie was that when the Slaters arrived it was on the same day that The US Soap Opera Guiding Light got Cancelled after 72 years on the air 57 on TV.

I remember this episode so clearly. I was only 16 and the Square needed some new blood. Beppe's family was meant to be that new blood but they just didn't work I hated Big Mo at first, didn't seem like there was any redeeming qualities to her and I loved Pat, so didn't like how Mo disrespected her 😂 also, because they were so popular and there were so many of them, they ended up in almost every scene for a good few years to the point of overload. Overall, they were one of the best families ever introduced to the show, though.
They were at their best from 2000-mid 03. In their later years the writers seemed to run out of ideas for them. Little Mo after Trevor just didn't work as well and she started to become annoying in her last few years-her affair with Alfie was car crash. Zoe went downhill in 2004 and the lesbian affair was nonsense and then they turned her into the bunny boiler with Den trying to get her pregnant which again was nonsense but the writers redeemed her in 2005 in her last months and she became decent again as she was good in the murder story line.
God, so much has happened since then. It's amazing how Kacey Ainsworth is now on Granchester and her Daughter is played by Simone Lahbib's Daughter Skye.

Another fun fact was that alot of the Old School Chick Lit Authors from Patricia Highsmith who wrote The Price Of Salt/Carol, as well as others like Rona Jaffe always wrote their Stories while smoking Cigarettes.

I wasn't keen on this era as The Slaters tended to hog every single storyline for a good few years. The Mitchell and Jacksons before them never did this they were still part of a good emsemble cast hence why the nineties will always be the best era of Eastenders in my eyes.
Yeah I agree. The late 90s/early 00s EastEnders was genuinely good viewing, with some good characters that were played well by good actors (Mike Reid/Frank Butcher for example). These days it's dreadful most of the time with absurd characters and terrible acting. Actually these days it's more like the Inbetweeners than a soap!

Another Family who arrived who were terrific were The Dingles, Tates & Kings on Emmerdale. Although most of them have moved away or are "Dead", their ripple effect still exists to this day.
I just realized that none of The Slaters lived on their own. Even now Kat & Big Mo never had their own Independence. I think that Kacey Ainsworth (Ex-Little Mo), Joanne Froggatt (Coronation Street) and Suranne Jones (Coronation Street) have really taken UK Viewing by storm and many US Fans watch them on PBS and HBO.
What has Ainsworth done? I agree on the other 2 having pretty decent tv careers post soap but Ainsworth hasn't nor is she anywhere in the same league as Suranne Jones in her post soap career. Jones and Sarah Lanchashire were 2 of the most successful in British tv post soap. Probably the only 1s who did notably well post Eastenders on tv/film were Ben Hardy, Ross Kemp, Nick Berry and Sue Tully and Kemp and Tully really excelled in non acting gigs. Tamzin Outwaite was expected to do better on tv after her Eastenders 2002 exit but didn't and had some big flops like Red Cap.

Crystal Chappel who played Olivia Spencer talked about her Webseries Venice and The BBC's Website Crashed because so many Fans watched The Love Story between Olivia & Natalia. F/X almost wanted to do a US Version of Bad Girls but they couldn't agree on rights and stuff. A lot of Fans wanted her to play The US Helen Stewart.

I discovered Eastenders when they played it on a PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) on a Detroit Channel. I was hooked although it was 10 years behind. Now I watch it on a Ethnic Channel focusing on The Indian Community although they are Nine Months behind. I am at the Storyline where Bobby "Hits" Dennis. Then I got on a Whim "Slaters In Detention". Charlie would turn over in his grave if he saw how bad they fell.

I remember this quite well, though for me, it was maybe 2007-2008 when these episodes aired here in my country. We were far behind in stotylines as you can imagine. Unfortunately, Eastenders doesn't air in my area anymore. I think the Slater family was my favorite. Does anyone know who's house they took over? I would have loved for Pat to go to Genoa City, WI and hang out with Mrs. Chancellor. That would have been smashing. Now Janine is back in town. I would have loved for Erika Slezak who played Viki on One Life To Live from 1971 until it's cancellation until 2011 who won Seven Daytime Emmys America's Highest TV Honor. She would have been brilliant as a Distant Relative of Frank.
Wait until The Baileys arrive on Coronation Street. The First Authentic Black Family to ever live on The Street in 59 Years. Even Ian McLeod was "ashamed" that Weatherfield never had a Black Family. I am looking forward to seeing foks reactions and how their "True Colors" Come out.
They are terrible actors except for the straight son. That's your first authentic black family on a small street in Manchester. When you look through the lens of, everyone's a racist if the have a negative perception of actors who happen to be black, you are a racist yourself.
If you can, check out the Feud with Viki/Dorian on One Life To Live (US) 1968-2011. Viki continuously blamed Dorian for her Father Victor Lord's Death but it wasn't until she did some hypnotism did she realize "she" did it. She suffered from Multiple Personality Disorder, and Repressed Memory Syndrome. Also Dorian as Town Mayor was so supportive of Gay Rights she married a Woman although she's straight just to prove a point.
@John Smith: There have always been different female characters in Eastenders, Kat Slater falls under the "Tart with a Heart" character. Liked Jessie Wallace's hairstyle back then though and glad they gave her less of the spray on tan as much eventually, they were comparing her to the Tango soft drink advert slogan for a while.
UK Soaps are so lucky. They still are on the air. September 18 2009 was also the day that Guiding Light got cancelled after 72 Years on the air, 57 on TV. US Soap Families never are overcrowded. In fact The Bauer Family on Guiding Light had Rooms above their Garage that was converted to an Apartment or "Flat". The Slaters really have hit rock bottom. Alfie stealing Phil's Money, Stacey & Martin on The Run, Kat is gone as well, and poor Jean loses her Friend to Cancer. They are so much like The Dingles on Emmerdale in the sense that no matter how bad things were they never forgot their were a Family first above everything else.

I just realized that none of The Slaters lived on their own. Even now Kat & Big Mo never had their own Independence. I think that Kacey Ainsworth (Ex-Little Mo), Joanne Froggatt (Coronation Street) and Suranne Jones (Coronation Street) have really taken UK Viewing by storm and many US Fans watch them on PBS and HBO.
What has Ainsworth done? I agree on the other 2 having pretty decent tv careers post soap but Ainsworth hasn't nor is she anywhere in the same league as Suranne Jones in her post soap career. Jones and Sarah Lanchashire were 2 of the most successful in British tv post soap.
Probably the only 1s who did notably well post Eastenders on tv/film were Ben Hardy, Ross Kemp, Nick Berry and Sue Tully and Kemp and Tully really excelled in non acting gigs.
Tamzin Outwaite was expected to do better on tv after her Eastenders 2002 exit but didn't and had some big flops like Red Cap.

@@shanefolan Oh I know that. When The Cast of Downton Abbey came to New York to promote the Show, they were treated to a Basketball Game. The folks were more excited to see them then see Lebron James play. He met them and told them how much he loved the show.
I don't think it's that unrealistic. I come from a typical working class family and I can't think of anybody, certainly no female that has lived alone. Myself included
What's so eerie is that The US Soap Opera Guiding Light was cancelled on September 18 2009. Crystal Chappel who played Olivia Spencer talked about her Webseries Venice and The BBC's Website Crashed because so many Fans watched The Love Story between Olivia & Natalia. F/X almost wanted to do a US Version of Bad Girls but they couldn't agree on rights and stuff. A lot of Fans wanted her to play The US Helen Stewart.

A similar thing happened on As The World Turns where Lisa Brown (RIP) told Lily Walsh (played by Martha Byrne) that she was her "Real" Mother, like Kat she too was raped at 13 and gave her child up for adoption. Martha grew up on Television and even wrote Three Episodes for The Bold & The Beautiful.
God it was a mass of new characters at once wasnt it? And yet, they worked a treat straight away.

I discovered Eastenders when they played it on a PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) on a Detroit Channel. I was hooked although it was 10 years behind. Now I watch it on a Ethnic Channel focusing on The Indian Community although they are Nine Months behind. I am at the Storyline where Bobby "Hits" Dennis. Then I got on a Whim "Slaters In Detention". Charlie would turn over in his grave if he saw how bad they fell.

I remember this quite well, though for me, it was maybe 2007-2008 when these episodes aired here in my country. We were far behind in stotylines as you can imagine. Unfortunately, Eastenders doesn't air in my area anymore. I think the Slater family was my favorite. Does anyone know who's house they took over? If there was anyone living in #23 before them, that is.

I would have loved for Pat to go to Genoa City, WI and hang out with Mrs. Chancellor. That would have been smashing. Now Janine is back in town. I would have loved for Erika Slezak who played Viki on One Life To Live from 1971 until it's cancellation until 2011 who won Seven Daytime Emmys America's Highest TV Honor. She would have been brilliant as a Distant Relative of Frank.

They are terrible actors except for the straight son. That's your first authentic black family on a small street in Manchester.

If you can, check out the Feud with Viki/Dorian on One Life To Live (US) 1968-2011. Viki continuously blamed Dorian for her Father Victor Lord's Death but it wasn't until she did some hypnotism did she realize "she" did it. She suffered from Multiple Personality Disorder, and Repressed Memory Syndrome. Also Dorian as Town Mayor was so supportive of Gay Rights she married a Woman although she's straight just to prove a point.

@John Smith: There have always been different female characters in Eastenders, Kat Slater falls under the "Tart with a Heart" character. Liked Jessie Wallace's hairstyle back then though and glad they gave her less of the spray on tan as much eventually, they were comparing her to the Tango soft drink advert slogan for a while.
Stacey is far more of a slapper than Kat. At least Kat feels bad for cheating unlike Stacey.
UK Soaps are so lucky. They still are on the air. September 18 2009 was also the day that Guiding Light got cancelled after 72 Years on the air, 57 on TV. US Soap Families never are overcrowded. In fact The Bauer Family on Guiding Light had Rooms above their Garage that was converted to an Apartment or "Flat". The Slaters really have hit rock bottom. Alfie stealing Phil's Money, Stacey & Martin on The Run, Kat is gone as well, and poor Jean loses her Friend to Cancer. They are so much like The Dingles on Emmerdale in the sense that no matter how bad things were they never forgot their were a Family first above everything else.
