So clear and useful! I'm not even a native English speaker and you've made yourself amazingly clear! Even better that some of my proffessors. Congrats on such a talent! And many many thanks!!!!!!!!!
Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial. I have seen so many designs online and wondering how graphic designers create something like this. I am forever grateful
Teela you are the sweetest you tuber. Sharing is caring...Thank sweet Jesus that youre not another high speed drawing tute with a music track. Im half way thru and this newbie is learning lots already :)
at 4:30 when you are making the bottom nodes fan outwards, you can select all four points at the same time and then hit S for the scale tool and then drag out from one of the points and that will allow you to move all 4 points inwards/outwards at the same time by the same length. Great video though and good clear explanations.
I knew there was a way to do that! It was driving me absolutely crazy watching it and thinking I know you can do that super easy somehow. But I'm still a newb at this stuff soooo. I love how she make it really easy to understand. It was the easiest tutorial I've watched so far and I've watch a whole lot!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these video/tutorials! You are a very good teacher. :) Sometimes I get lost when I don't see you do a keystroke, but I've been able to follow along pretty well. I am going to create my niece's wedding invitation, so I love learning little tips.
I am loving these tutorials, Teela! I'm finding them very useful in learning illustrator, it helps me get my head around the program and it's fun. Thanks so much for these!
Very clear and helpful tutorial! One thing that might make it even clearer for a beginner like me would be to have the keyboard short cuts written down as you said them :)
I agree your voice is very calming and soothing which is nice because learning new things can be stressful sometimes. Somehow your voice says, don't worry you got this! It's very reassuring.
Hi! I really enjoyed this tutorial. You were very clear and your voice is lovely! I learned a lot of new keyboard shortcuts especially. I did notice that you kept on manually clicking "send to back," and was wondering if you knew the command+[ for backwards and command+] to bring things forward. Looking forward to watching your other videos! Thank you.
Love the tutorial, super informative and well explained but also just thought I'd say I think you can send objects to the back by hitting: "cmd [" for sending backward and an opposite ] to bring forward and I think if you hit shift as well it sends fully to the front or back, just thought I'd say as its always easier to use shortcuts when possible ;)
Dapper Hedgehog yep! you definitely can and that's how I work - since this is a beginner type of tutorial, didn't want to overwhelm viewers with too many shortcuts - especially the ones that are a little more complex :) Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial! Quick question though. Since the watercolor texture is saved as a png and not a vector, if I wanted to enlarge the popsicle (for example if I wanted to print it as a poster), will the watercolor look pixelated? I'm new to all this so any help would be appreciated. :)
Hi Teela, Great tutorial! I cant believe I actually made something in Illustrator. I'm used to Photoshop so Illustrator is taking some time to get used to. You've made it really easy to understand and follow so thank you! A quick question...would you be able to say the shortcut keys your using more clearly or put them on the screen/description box? I was having a hard time following some of the instructions involving the shortcut keys you mentioned since I'm new to illustrator and couldn't hear the keys mentioned as clearly. Thanks so much for taking the time to teach us newbies!
This tutorial is awesome! How would you make a repeating pattern with these once you've created them in Illustrator? Do you have a tutorial on that? Thanks for sharing this! I loved it!
Hi, If I created these and I wanted to use them as clipart to sell on Etsy. Are you okay with this? or do you want me to purchase your license since these are your designs. I hope my question makes sense? I am not sure if you are okay with me selling these individually on Etsy or using them in my designs?
i don't know why when i tried to clipping mask the second ice cream it says "the selection cannot contain objects within different groups unless the entire group is selected" although i've selected all the points. thank you for the tutorial.
The watercolors I was using were sized large enough to remain raster. I highly recommend avoiding vectorizing watercolor textures if you can - it makes files sizes massive because of the number of anchor points that are created in the process (which can crash older computers) and it can complicate a simple process like a clipping mask because if multiple objects are involved, then you also have to know what a compound path is and know when to implement it.
Teela, I would like to create a huge banner and incorporate watercolor textures. If you think it's a bad idea to vectorize watercolor textures, then how can I have a watercolor effect without a rasterized image looking pixelated?
Why will this watercolor clipping mask work on a basic square shape I tried, but when I tried it on a dino illustration i made it turns white and doesnt work?
You'll want to create a compound path of that grouped artwork before applying a clipping mask (you always have to do this if what you're cropping is composed of more than one shape). Object > compound path > make 👍
Hi - this is awesome thank you so much! I just don't know how you were able to draw the drips and have it connect to the shape like that? When I use the draw tool it just draws a line. Is there something special I have to do to draw something on a shape like that and then have that become part of the shape?
+The Cooper Review hey! You may be using the line tool instead of the pencil tool. With the popsicle shape selected, hit 'n' on your keyboard (the pencil tool's keyboard shortcut) and start to draw following the path of the popsicle at first, then into your drip, then back up to the popsicle's path and they'll connect :)
You are very talented! And an awesome teacher :^) But may I ask U a question: how did U add a handle (08:01) to the anchorpoint? Thanks for great tutorial!!!
Hi, i would like to ask, can we apply the same method with the blob brush tool? I want to create a water color effect outline. Appreciate your input with rgrds to this, tq
Mohamed Faizal Basirudin Hey! You could definitely apply the textures in the same manner if you use the blob brush since it creates shapes when used. If you just wan to apply textures to an outline, select the outline, go to object > expand, then you can mask the textures into the outline the same way. Expanding makes a stroked path an object :) Hope this helps!
Hey! You'll just have to hit 'a' for your direct select tool, then click on the texture and move it :) If you need to rescale, hit 'v' and you can grab corner nodes to scale
For some reason, my computer wont save the settings for the popsicle stick. I have entered in all the same info you have (color, 5 pt rounded corners) and opened the rounded rectangle tool but whenever I go to draw the popsicle stick, the settings go back to the original and the rectangle isn't very round at all. What am I doing wrong?
+Chelsea Lawyer It adds a border stroke and changes the brush to basic instead of 5 pt round and when I turn the border off, the round corners go with it...
Ignore the rounded rectangle settings provided here. Simply hold down the up arrow while you draw your stick to make the ends rounded. Down arrow to make them squared :)
Can i ask a question i kinda do now haha. But can i use a black color and scale the opacity to 30 for example and put it over intead pof making a darker shade of the color that have worked for me but i wonder whats better?
+kriss420 Technically, it's a better practice to adjust your actual texture instead of darkening in Illustrator, because if you were to ever print it, the results would be more reliable. You can totally do what you're suggesting though, especially if you're making it for on-screen usage and want to save some time :)
I recommend using blend modes multiply and screen and then if you were to start distributing prints or are sending a file to someone will be making prints, use the Flatten Transparency option while your art is selected and that will turn your shaded components into colors and get rid of blend modes.
I can't even express how much I love and appreciate your tutorials! They are AWESOME!!!!! Thanks and keep doing what you do....you are gifted!

Great video! Just curious, why didn't you vectorize the textures first? Won't they distort if you wanted to enlarge the finished image?

says the image is too complex, any idea how to make it work? I grouped the layers
You'll want to create a compound path of that grouped artwork before applying a clipping mask (you always have to do this if what you're cropping is composed of more than one shape). Object > compound path > make 👍
Teela Cunningham thanks so much!

Bulky Lee thanks for answer. well I'm sorry my english were almost completely unreadable.
Does this work only in the updated version of Illustrator? I have the Adobe Illustrator CS.
+Joanna Lee I'm not sure about CS - if you can make a clipping mask and have a pathfinder palette in CS, it'll work!
okay thank you!
Teela, more food tutorials!
when i clipped my watercolour...how to i get the popscile sticks not to show through??
Thank you!

your voice sounds so sweet, now i am one of your subscribers, too. waiting for your new video~
Hi I couldn't quite catch, but what was the tool you clicked on at 5:16?
+aMozburger hey! You'll have to have your pathfinder palette open (window > pathfinder) and then click on the "divide" icon (bottom row, far left)
Alright! Thanks so much!
Thanks! (from: Colombia)
KALO design Thanks for watching! Happy to have you here!

Nice video.
wow beautiful :)
What if i want to do the same on multiple shapes? it doesn't create mask.
You'll have to select those multiple shapes, then create a compound path first (object > compound path > make) and then apply your clipping mask :)
i really like this :D
Teerapat Wongsrichu thanks for watching! :)
Can u do a tutorial on how to make popsicle in Photoshop
was amazing
+DOTA GAMES thanks for watching!
you created the dutch flag!! #netherlands
may this method which use png print to good quality ?
yep! As long as the png was originally saved as a high quality print resolution (which these were), they'll show up fine in print :)
Thanks!!!!
