- Making over a home made dresser into an expensive modern West Elm Dresser. The dresser we're trying to duplicate costs $1,699 at the time of making this video. The dresser we're going to transform only cost $25. The cost of supplies with the cost of the dresser landed the total flip around $100 - not including tools which are not consumables. Chipotle burritos are consumables though...

Wow, almost 2 Grand for a veneered piece made in Vietnam. I can only imagine what kind of cheap labor is being put into West Elm furniture... Thank you Emily for this amazingly beautiful, sustainable and affordable transformation!
Thanks Bo!
That better be 1/4 veneer.
Emily, The dresser came out beautiful and who wouldn’t rather have a solid wood dresser instead of one made with nasty particleboard. Yours is the winner.
Thank you Joseph!! Love your kind words🙂
Wow, fantastic dupe challenge!! Am I alone in thinking that the inspiration piece is ridiculously priced at $1699!?? I could not, nor would ever pay that kind of money for a dresser! I love how you recreated the same look for only $100!! Epic!
Hey! Long time listener, first time caller. Just wanted to say that I LOVE this piece and think that it is absolutely amazing! You definitely take the cake when it comes to getting it the closest to the piece! Love the contrast of the dark drawers
If there is cake I will take it... I laughed at your intro because I can just hear you saying it: Long time listener, first time caller.' LOL Thank you!
@@ReconstructingEmily hahaha 😂
I love your idea of dark walnut Danish oil for the drawers!!! Brilliant way to hide dark stains that cannot be sanded out! I will offer this idea to my client for the desk make over I’m doing (where I cannot get out the dark stains).
Desk drawer stains are not fun! The possibilities as far as what caused them are endless. Thank you Janice! I hope the desk looks awesome!
Such an amazing duplication. I was blown away at how much the 'reveal' looked like the West Elm piece. Your attention to detail is so impressive. Like over-driving the nails in the drawers and then using wood filler to conceal them. I would never have thought of that!
I was confused on what all you mixed to get your final color. I know you said it was all water-based, but I couldn't follow the products you listed.
Definitely going to watch the rest of the videos in this challenge playlist!
I think, if I remember correctly, I mixed carts and millie charlie latte paint with drift wood stain. Then I blended that with the water based finish to make it a tinted finish more or less. It does mess with the finish sheen a bit, which can be corrected by just appling the finish only on the final coat. I would consider it a water based toner blend.
Always a joy to see more(s) of your restorations! And this is a great one!
She'd much rather scrape than sand
And it keeps chemicals off the hand(s)
With no harsh fumes
To poison the rooms
And dust doesn't cover the land
Yessss! Thats way more articulate than my short soap box moment! 📦 Love it! Thanks JB!
Love how you “created” the color to match the dupe. It turned out so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Ellen! 😊
Dear Emily, your sanding poem is a beautiful, yet tragically accurate, reality. Sincerely, Jenn (fellow refinisher who totally gets it) 🤪
Jokes aside, you crushed this dupe challenge! Spot on match in style. I like your finish better, the inspo looks more orangey. Great work!
Tragically accurate
This turned out sooooo good! A+ on the dupe! Color correction was exceptional. And did you stain the drawer interior with a darker stain? I love that contrast! It looks really crisp. The best part is you can have so many more Chipotle burritos now.🌸
Thank you Deborah! I used dark walnut danish oil which acts as a stain more or less on the drawers.
I honestly think your version looks way better than the original no joke! Great thinking with the danish oil in the drawers it really elevated the piece great work Emily!
Thank you 😊 This means a lot coming from you!
I find your videos really clear and your commentaries so informative. An excellent updating. Best wishes Alison
Thank you so much Alison!
I love the dark drawer boxes with the light exterior. And your camera work is getting so freaking good!
Thank you! It can always get better! 😀
I really like this piece. It has a scandinavian look over it, with the light finish.
In the end I'd like it to stand in my bedroom, instead of the ikea thing, that's there now.
Thank you Jorn! 😊
I love the dark inside of the drawers! This turned out so gorgeous!
Thank you Shelley! 😊
You never disappoint. I always enjoy your work and teaching. Thank you. This piece is gorgeous. You did an amazing job.
I always look forward to getting a comment from you, seriously! Thank you for your kind words 💜
Excellent results. When I started and realized the wood was pine, I thought there was no way this was going to look like the inspiration, but it certainly does.
Thank you Rachael! Pine is definately tricky.
Such a great restoration. I like yours better than the example you were following. There is a richness to yours that had no words.
Thank you so much Renee ❤️
Awesome work Emily! I love how the dresser turned out, very close to the your inspiration! I love ❤️
Thank you!!
was the west elm piece made of gold. Very funny. Great job.
Thank you 😊
You nailed this Emily. I would call them fraternal twins❣️
LOL Thank you LaVonne! 😊
You did a magnificent job matching the other dresser!
I always learn from your videos, Thank you!💕
Thank you so much Rhonda! I am very happy to hear this! 😊
Ok…I was actually talking to my phone when I saw you figure out that color correction…exact words…So smart! That worked!
Lol Thank you Karen
Looks just as good as the West Elm Dresser and yours is not veneer! Very nicely done :-)
Thank you thank you!
Come on...this was not even close to a real challenge for you! Beautiful Finish and a Win!
I struggled with the color and the excessive sanding. More of a challenge of will power LOL. For real though the color matching part...I'm still bothered by the fact it wasn't perfect.
Beautifully done. I love the darker stain for the drawer interiors.
Thank you Sid!!
This was a good looking piece to start with. What a great find! Your update has given this little dresser an awesome new life. ❤
Thank you! For sure a solid piece. I loved the variations in wood tones even though it was orange.
Love the poem. Great job. I really like the contrast of the outside and inside of the drawers.
Thank you 😊
You did a fantastic job!!! I Love the light look on the outside body and the dark inside!!!🌸💜🌸
Thank you Cathy! Happy accidents!
This video was so calming to watch. I love watching your process and you did a beautiful job on this piece.
Every time you say "dresser carcass" I have a good laugh so thank you for that :) also, now I want a chipotle burrito hahaha
Hah! Its the actual term!! I looked it up after hearing it like...is this real? I wanted one when I was editing the video.. clearly they need to sponsors me lol
You've nailed it. Even better than the source piece. Love the contrasting shades especially.
Thank you Patricia! 😊
Emily, everything you do comes out so sticking good! This piece is no exception. Just beautiful!!!!And great video!🔥👏🔥
Aww Thank you so much!!
Next time, color correct it with a green stain or paint wash first and then apply the finish you want! The warm undertones will be neutral 😄
Love your color correction and the interior drawer stain! Lovely.
Thank you Toni!
I like this piece. A lot of work, but worth it.
Thank you Gail!!! 🙂
Love what you did here! I would have personally cut off the rounded tops and make them straigh/flush with the sides, BUT ...the main point here is that you don't need to spend a ridiculous almost $2K dollars on a piece of furniture (at least I'd never do it)
Awesome work! :)
Thank you Ale! The tiny little dovetails I almost missed got to me! I had plans when I bought it to just chop the sides off...then I saw them. I just want to know how they were made.
Nailed it!! 🙌
Hah! I refrained from saying this because of all the nails in the drawers. lol Thank you!
@@ReconstructingEmily 😁
This is now a stunning dresser and I prefer it over the West Elm one. The people who shell out that much money for that one are silly!
Right! That is way too much! Thank you V bee!
Good job. It is perfect.
Thank you very much!
I Love It!!!
This looks wonderful! The wash you did is the perfect color
Thank you so much Branmuffin!

Awesomeness! I really like this. Great job!
Thank you Denise!
Amazing job! Such great inspo as well. I got an old pine dresser for free that looks very similar. I'm planning to redo it for my son's room but haven't settled on a plan yet, so thanks for this!
Thank you Alicia! I hope whatever you decide it turns out awesome 💜
Turned out Beautiful!! Love you videos

Thank you Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven! ❤️
Really lovely
Thank you Wendy!
You Nailed it.
Thank you Gina 🙂
Hahaha! "The bottom knob was chewed on" you could hear the collective..oh..yeah, by all of us that have puppies/dogs!
Wooden furniture snacks for all!
Is it made out of gold??? That's like 182 Chipotle meals!!! I was freakin dying Man. Even though I very much missed the rhyming, still a FANTASTIC video Emily!!! If Wet Elm is selling theirs for $1700 then you should easily get $750 for yours!!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
Depending upon my levels of hunger, I do equate certain large purchases to the number of burritos I could enjoy instead. Or whatever I'm wanting at the moment really. Puts things into perspective. Such a crazy price tag on the West Elm piece... Thank you Mike G!
Beautiful well done
Thank you so much Rosa!
This piece is so beautiful 😍.
Thank you Rhonda!
This is a fantastic dupe!
Thank you Becky!
Congratulations on this beauty! You did great 👏🏻

Best dupe I’ve seen! Great job.
Thank you! 😊
Very beautiful! Well done dupe. Love your top coat recipe.
Top coat recipe! I'm not much for baking but I can mix up a mean poly recipe 😀
OK!!!!!!! THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!!
Thank you Sophia!
Nice! It looks very similar to your inspiration piece and it turned out great! Great job! 👏👏👏
Thank you Emma 😊
Love it 🥰
Thank you Jennifer!
Love how informative your vids are!!!! I think I have this exact dresser from my childhood but it was painted white and orange. Will be bugging my Mum to see if she still has it somewhere that I can try to play with :D
Project inspiration! Always a fantastic thing!
Great Dupe‼️
Thank you Patti!
Wonderful
Thank you Sarah!!
Love it
Thank you Rosemarie!
I like it!!!
Thank you Beverly!
Awesome
Thank you Connie!
Love it! I also just tried that 'tinted poly' technique on bare wood in a project I just finished, and it worked like a charm. I enjoy your videos.
That's awesome! I was so happy it worked. Thank you Craig!
Spot on. Very nicely done. I do hope you don’t catch flak for showing Edward Pollard’s book.
Thanks JS! I hope not.
Beautiful,,it is so close to the WE great job
Thank you Dodd!!
Hello !!! Emily your amazballs love your work and your adorable sarcasm. good job sister
Thank you so much Jodi!
Love it! So good, Emily and in fact I like the colour much more than the West Elm Piece 😍
Yay! Thank you! 😊 So happy I watched twitch mix some paint and stain together. Never would have thought to do this!
@@ReconstructingEmily that’s the beauty of water based products too 🥰
Wow! I would pay 100 burritos for it! 😍
Burrito Math!!! 😀 Hope you laughed when you saw I added that in!
I think you did a great job! I like it better than the West Elm Original!
Thank you Elaine!
Emily the piece turned out beautiful! Well done! So sad we weren’t able to participate in this challenge
Thank you so much! There will be more and you can always take on a challenge like this just to try it. I think its interesting looking at another style and trying it out.

Fabulous beautiful
Thank you Caroline!!
Best dupe I’ve seen! You nailed it. Did that wood fill stain to match? Always have a hard time with that. Thanks!
The kind I get is stainable, but I know on certain stain colors its better and I don't have to touch those spots up if I use the pre tinted kind. This finishw as light so it worked out well.
WHOA! You totally nailed this “dupe”, Emily!! It looks just like the West Elm piece and was 1/10th the cost in Chipotle burritos (this made me giggle bc my son is the grill manager for Chipotle). Even though your piece had some tapering, which was much more obvious in its original form, you can hardly tell now. Especially with the new hardware and legs (so glad to see someone use these, I have them in my Amazon cart in gold for a piece). Yours would go for a lot of money in my area (I’m in Dallas), but less than the West Elm piece, as it’s very popular right now. Excellent transformation, Emily!💜
Oh and your poly wash toned that pink waaay down. It’s hard to do (I’ve struggled with it for some bathroom cabinets). I saw Angie (Transcend Furniture Gallery) deal with this in one of her videos. I think she put a think coat of walnut stain on and went back to her pickling stain? But yeah, the red in pine, walnut and even oak is a bugger when doing a pickling finish. You did an amazing job and love the idea of tinting the poly (top coat) like a wash. Will definitely try it (sorry for the long comment😁).💜
Thank you so much Ashley! The color tones are so tricky sometimes. If its red and you put white on it then its just pink. I'm sure there is a green stain out there but it would probably make things worse. Also don't apologize for your long comment. It was super sweet! 💜
This is beautiful! How did you keep the repaired scratches from showing?
Thank you Claire! The wood filler is natural color and stainable so when I applied the oil based stain it hid a lot of those pretty gnarly dings.
You had me at $25
Haha! Good to know!
You're so creative Emily....love Your poems and love your work...this piece is stunning...I never get that pretty Pine as I always get that Knotty pine and it's Very Naughty! 😂😂.. sorry I Had to throw that in there...I'm a poet and don't even know it...anywho Beautiful piece emily.and I think yours is better than the 180 chipotle burrito one (can't remember the exact number) lol ❣️
LOL Thank you Debra! 182 Burritos (before taxes) 🙂
@@ReconstructingEmily 😂I was close ..not too bad for a Grandma 😂❣️
👏👏👏
Thank you Maria!
I have a question. I recently received a telephone table (approx 100 years old) its in great shape but a want to recreate it into something more current and useful. Is it possible to send you pictures and get your feedback and ideas. I love your work and creative ideas.
I like the idea of making telephone tables into mud room seats. A seat at an entry way can often be a nice amenity, because you can put your stuff down on the table and sit down to take your shoes off. Hope this helps!
I was skeptical when you started, but the result was great. Did you think about squaring off the top? The legs were perfect!
Yes I did. I planned on cutting the top square with my circular saw until I found the jointery between the boards looked like little dove tails, which is why I ended up not squaring it off. Thanks for watching!
I’m curious- I see a lot of ppl using the scraper but can it be hand planed? I’ve done hand planing but not scraping
I think the issue with hand planning is you're likely to gum up the blade. Scraping is a bit easier than hand planning imo. (when its practical to scrape.)
@@ReconstructingEmily thank you
Dresser carcass 😂
So beautiful dear friend Pakistan
Thank you! 😊
