BETTER than Restored! Mid-century Modern Dresser- Custom Built Furniture Base
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 гру 2021
- In this video I’ll be restoring a Dixie brand mid century modern dresser that was painted in black and white. I take it back to the mahogany veneer and add a new base using a self-centering dowel jig and pocket holes.

Holy COW! It’s GORGEOUS!! And to think the previous owner covered up mahogany, with latex paint!! I’m amazed at your determination and a whole lot of patience to get all that paint off, with I think every tool in the toolbox. Thank you for another inspiring video of your awesome work.💜
To be fair, it was likely blonde lacquer before they painted it. The stuff looks like plastic, which is seriously an unfortunate style trend. Though I won't necessarily defend the painter on this piece either for obvious reasons... Almost every tool was used! I had to be reminded by a friend that I had the detailed carbide scraper for the corners. Such a time saving tool! Thank you Ashley and happy holidays!
You really know your way around carpentry tools! I like your work. You seem to transform the ugliest ducklings into the most beautiful swans.
Thank you for saving this piece from the dump! You really revived it
Thank you Hannah!
THANK YOU! My heart breaks every time I see a video of someone painting MCM furniture that does NOT need to be painted! I wish these bigger furniture flipping channels would knock it off...These pieces are so hard to find and when I am lucky enough to find one, I am not finding them cheap!
Hahaha! I was just saying yesterday- if I see another watefall dresser being covered in chalk paint my head will explode!
Who would have thought such a beautiful dresser was under that cow pie 🤣! Very nice, entertaining and informative video. Thanks!
Thank you Judie! 🐄❤
Unbelievable how gorgeous that wreck turned under your magic hands ! 😍👍🏻👏🏻
Thank you Fernando!
Emily, you did an amazing job on this, not only restoring this piece, but also filming and editing it all together. It was so easy to follow and your craftsmanship really shows. Really beautiful job.
Thank you so much! ❤ Going to make me 😊 blush!
I agree with Chic Antique. However, I do have one suggestion: When filming the "after" and you get done with focusing on the details and you finally pull back for that oh so satisfying shot of the whole thing, please make sure you GET the whole thing and then... linger! Not necessarily a very long time, just long enough I can hit pause and really get a good look. This is a pet peeve of mine, generally, with a lot of UA-camrs, but especially when the transformation is so dramatic and the end product so beautiful.
Great save Emily! You really did a great job on bringing this piece back! It's beautiful!
Thank you Jim & Cindy! ❤
My goodness !!!!!! Unbeliveable! It is beautiful! God has realy blessed you with the gift restoration. ❤
Thank you Betty!
WOW - This dresser got a Second Life and looks absolutely beautiful!
Thank you 😊
That is not the same dresser! OMG you are a magician. Absolutely fantastic makeover. Love love the legs. I want to learn how to make those.. Bravo! 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
Thank you Alex! 😊
Wow!!! You brought this beauty back to life.
Really came out nice and the curved front skirt complemented the piece beautifully.
Thank you! 😊
How could anyone have painted that beautiful piece? You did a great job, I like your comments and how you go about your restorations.
Dowel joinery instead of the usual pocket holes is a very nice touch, stronger and longer lasting. The base looks original. The whole thing looks amazing.!
Dowels lack the ease of 'just screw the boards together and be done,' but the fact I didn't really need to think about how I would center things was nice. Just had to make sure to drill the holes staggering for the dowels since the legs were narrow. I think the dowel jig will come in handy to make repairs less apparent too - hopefully! Thank you Clyde! Hope you're having a wonderful holiday
This turned out fabulous. Who would have thought that gorgeous dresser was under all that
Thank you Sherry!
WOW GIRL! I bow to your talent and persistence!!! I am not worthy! 😉. Beautiful work.
You are too kind ❤️ Thank you 😊
Emily! This is gorgeous! So much hard work and so many tips…”upward scrapping!” 😬🤣
Thank you 😊
Wow! When I was a kid a looooong time ago, that blond furniture was very popular. I thought it was so ugly and gross. I still hate the way it looks. I never knew it was mahogany under all that laquer and plastic shine. You have done an AMAZING job turning this ugly duckling into something beautiful. Not a swan - someone tried that already with all that white paint. You’ve created something better than the original, with the original wood exposed and a base that makes more sense. Lots of work, but so beautiful in the end. And you taught me how to get all that paint out of the grain, too. Wonderful, marvelous video!🌸
Thank you Deborah! I think theres a lot of people who would look at the blonde finishes and think its laminate. Some of them are so thick a coating that it legitimately looks like plastic. Its probably my least favorite original finish. Though I did see an American of Martinsville dresser with almost a purple hue in the white lacquer. I think it was Walnut veneer under it so that might be why, but that finish looked nice. Also a high end brand so, probably better quality finish.
Congrats on an incredible outstanding restoration.
I never would have guessed that beautiful wood was underneath that black and white paint. Awesome awesome job. Much respect.
Thank you James!
10,000% improvement!
Thank you Virginia!
The legs made it look like it should, nice job
I laughed so hard at the gateway boxes 😆 Great save!!
Thank you Angie 😊
That was the best extreme tall boy makeover I have yet to see.
Thank you Kim! 😊 This one needed some help lol
Wow!! Look at you go! She's a beaut!
Thank you!
I wasn’t expecting a miracle, but you gave us one. WOW!!
Gateway box turned into a real dresser! 😀
OMgosh, that was a labour of love, and so worth it. Thanks for saving and sharing Ems!
Thank you Julie-Ann! Happy holidays! 😊
This is stunning in its true color. As a lover of Mahogany, I cringed as I watched you scraping all the gross paint off the beautiful wood! Thank you for restoring it! Well done!
Thank you Deborah! 😊
I think this is definitely my fav thing I've seen you do! Lovely finished piece!
Thank you! This one was quite the undertaking with all of its layers.
Great job Emily!!! The legs came out awesome & the Gateway Computers reference made me chuckle. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
Hey Mike G!! Hope you're having a good holiday! Glad you laughed. I remember seeing the stores for the first time and was shocked they were the same as the computer boxes! Has to be some good marketing though if people remember after all these years!
I'm so mesmerized at the craftsmanship you have created with all the knowledge you share with us that only hope to learn after watching this very unique piece that now has a New Life and Purpose because of you. Thanks for sharing this transformation with us. Beautiful outcome and smiling huge out here in New Orleans at the beauty you uncovered and built upon.
Thank you so much Laura! I sold this piece last week to a lady who absolutely loved it. So happy it gets another chance and ended up with someone who will appreciate it.
That bb looks so happy now 😊
Stunning transformation! Bravo!
Thank you Julia!
Wow!! Wow!! Amazing job! It's a beautiful piece now!
Thank you so much Mimi!!
That's an amazing transformation. Great work.
Thank you Ana!
Wonderful restoration of a "Gateway" dresser :) Is it just me, or did you use every possible technique here? Your dowel jig game is strong. The only thing missing is an intro poem!
I try to vary my techniques to show that things can be done in many different ways. I started to write the poem, but didn't really like it for this piece. Been in a funk since the beginning of the month, and I'm hoping things improve in January. Thanks JB!
Wow! Gorgeous, great job! I love wood finishes. 🌞👍
Thank you Maryann!
While I appreciate so many of the refinishing projects that I've seen on UA-cam, sometimes it seems that chalk paint and black paint are used so much to cover beautiful wood grain. I've only just started watching a few of your videos, binge-watching, and I really love how you restore thecwood. And I feel that if you ever chose to use paint to cover finish it would be beautiful.
Thank you Mary! I do own a few painted pieces, but it makes sense for their use and placement. I also try to look heavily at the craftsmanship put into building something. Sure most of these pieces are made in a factory but someome had to assemble and put it together. I think its important not to lose that when possible.
That base looks original to the piece. I love it when the paint layers strip off like that. You are just so fun to watch. Happy Holidays to you and yours 🎉
It is very satisfying to watch the layers peel off! thank you Adriana and Happy Holidays!
Thank you for removing another bad paint job
It's beautiful! It's hard to believe that it's the same piece of furniture. I love those handles.
Thank you Melanie!
You cracked me up with the Gateway pic lol. If this started out as a cow it sure didn't end that way. Stunning restoration, Emily! The arch was a great call, it gives much more personality and style. Beautiful job!
Cannot be unseen with the gateway box!! Thank you - it would have been too boxy to fit with the top drawers for sure! ❤
Loved the new base and legs in particular. It looks like a million bucks.
Thank you D Shey! 😊
A lovely piece of furniture, spoiled b y a bad paint job and brought back to loveliness by your hard work. And that scraping, sanding, etc looked like very hard work!
Thank you Dawn!
Oh, WOW, the tricks I have learned watching this dresser rescue. I could have really used this 3 months back on a latex 🤢 of a dresser I acquired. Good thing is I made the choice to walk away. So, off to harbour freight I go for a couple new tools...💃🥳💃🥳💗
New tools! Always a good day - especially if they make your life easier!!
@@ReconstructingEmily AMEN to that!
Your craftsmanship is incredible 😀
Thank you 😊
I have only watched a couple , but am impressed to see you brining wood furniture back to life! I refinish and repair furniture myself, and bring beautiful pieces back to life, not just cover them up with paint. Thanks! Very nice work!
Thank you! 😊 It's very satisfying to bring back the wood, even when taking the older finishes off that sometimes the true beauty.
@@ReconstructingEmily I don't want to sound like a restoration purist, lol but many just paint over something that can be beautiful. Again great work!
the final result took my breath away...so beautiful~
You are too kind ❤️
@@ReconstructingEmily 😊
You are wonderful. This piece is fantastic
❤️ Thank youu!
Flat dab gorgeous! What a dramatic save. Admire your skill set. Always learn something new from you! Thank you!
Thank you Libby 😊
Very awesome restoration with a new modern style base. Great work.
Thank you! 😊 🙏
You and Saab's Rehabs are simply master craftspersons. Unbelievable save of that dresser making it into a work of art. Loved looking at the refinished piece which is now back to its original state and up a notch too.
Thank you for this huge compliment! 😊💜
Lovely job again ! You could try sharpening down some different old screw drivers to gouge out grooves likes this.
Mind blowing results! Wow
Thank you!
That was wonderful to watch. You are very brave in all that you had to do to give this dresser new life. I admire you patience. It was worth it to watch the process. Beautiful results. Thank you.
Thank you Sara!
Wow. Love the wood finish better than the paint.
Thank you Lois! Definitely looks a lot better than before!
Man you had my heart with this guy! You did an incredible job, Emily!
Thank you 😊
This is gorgeous! The new base really upgrades the look. Only thing is that poplar never takes stain evenly and the blotchy finish doesn’t complement the other finish. Perhaps a black painted finish would have solved this and made the piece look more cohesive.
I was also thinking this. Poplars just so touchy. I am planning on trying something with a different species and just going natural with it. Just need to make sure the wood tones compliment 🙂 Always a fun task!
Beautiful I love it when people keep the original handles 👌 lovely job
Thank you Julie! 😊
I absolutely love this! I wish I had this in my home. You did it some good justice, just beautiful. Merry Christmas and a blessed new year ♡
Thank you so much BB! Merry Christmas and happy new year to you as well ❤
WOW WOW WOW!! Emily! Looks great!
Thank you Yvette 😊
WOW! How much fun was that!
Wow! What an amazing transformation!
Yes it did look like a Gateway box. lol It looks amazing. Thank you. It gives me hope that maybe one day I'll help save a desk that is (as we speak) STILL sitting in my garage. lol
Just gotta start! (I say this as I am procrastinating on my next project.) 🙃
@@ReconstructingEmily You do give me hope.
Oh my goodness. That came out great!
It’s so pretty.😊
really nice save on this one. level of detail is great, well done on reconstructing the base, impressive refinish
Thank you Daniel!
I love restored mid-centry modern! Good job!
Thank you!
great job Emily
Thank you Kimberly!
Just think of how many beautiful dressers will need this done to them a few years from now, because of all the DIYers who think they are making vintage, top quality furniture"better"with crappy paint jobs.
Maybe get a paint stripper company to sponsor me? Lol. I have a moderate rant I may slim down for my next video. To me its not so much about the paint but the quality in the work. (I do paint and own painted furniture.) Something as simple as putting tape in the drawer handle holes when painting so it doesnt drip in the drawer. Will leave it at this for now before many paragraphs ensue.
What a beautiful job! I'm so glad that you restored that piece. Someone will be proud to have it. 🙂👍
Thank you so much Holly ❤
Stunning Transformation!
Thank you Joanne! ❤
Wow beautiful. I love the way you take care of every little piece of the furniture that is rotten or mismatching. In some other videos that I have watched it's off putting when people just paint over things. Really great job.
Elegant upgrades recommended your and your site and is worth every second of watching. Thank you!!!
Shes amazing! Thank you for checking my page out!! ❤
A superb true restoration
Thank you John!
I wish this was mine! Love that hardware.
Wow! So much work, so beautiful!
Thank you Gail 😊
Impresionante el cambio! Me encantó, quedó espectacular!!!
That turned out so beautiful
Thank you Gerold!
Well done 👍
Thank you 👍
Wow! That turned out great and the base really completes it nicely.
Thank you Cody!
This is so beautiful! 💜💜
Thank you so much!!
Hey Emily, great work! So sad to see attractive mid-century furniture (almost any furniture actually) covered with gobs of badly applied paint. The unique hardware makes the piece very special. The base you built sets off the dresser very well.
Thanks JP!

Beautiful piece of furniture. Great restoration!
Thank you and Happy Holidays! 😊
What a job,,,,wow,,,,what a beautiful piece
Thank you Dodd! 😊 Happy Holidays!
Just Gorgeous!
Stunning
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful restoration!
Thank you Virginia!
Nice work 👏👏👍
Thank you so much 😀
How does anyone think covering up MAHAGONY, even if it is just veneer, is a good idea? It looks like it came out of a House Beautiful magazine pic, circa 1953. That took not just skill but patience to not rush it and do it right, mad respect!!
Lovely job 😊👍😊
Thank you! 😊
wow I'm impressed, looks so beautiful.
Thank you Ivan!
Super-fan-tastic! 🎉😊
I don't know how often you check older video comments but you might look at a nylon brush wheel for your drill, its gentle on wood but I've use it to pull paint out of crevices before and it worked surprisingly well. Got the idea from blacktail studios using it to clean off bark.
I think I might have one on the shelf in my garage. Bought the multipack with the wire brush. If not I will look into it. The tiny little crevises are a beast sometimes. Thank you for sharing!
Nice! 👏👏👏
Thank you Mauricio!
Wow! Absolutely beautiful, the work that you put in, wow again. I’m a fairly new subscriber and I love your videos, thanks for taking us along on your journey. Take care, stay safe.
Thank you so much Kathy ❤️
I'm so glad you knew what to do each step of the way, what you were working with and that you kept the amazing hardware. I could tell it had been an great MCM piece originally. But it was abused with horrible makeovers. What you did to bring this back to life is fabulous and so fun to watch. Thanks for all the information and notes in the description below. One thing I noticed and then was very glad of, you have a wood saw that is exactly what I recently bought to work on a piece. Since I haven't used this type of Japanese hand saw before, I was glad to see it being used and felt a lot better about my purchase. Thanks for this great video and your information.
The handsaw is one I have seen Elegant Upgrades use. Super handy little saw! Hers folds over though so she can take it with her. I need that lol. Not too difficult to use. Glad the information was helpful!
Wow now the handles are brilliant
Thank you Lee!
@@ReconstructingEmily I just appreciate the job...they are not easy
I'm refinishing a project that has latex paint in all the nooks and crannies. I've been using a clay sculpting set to get into all the fine details with a thin layer of stripper to soften. This has worked amazingly well. Highly suggest.
I actually recently purchased a small wood carving set. I imagine these are really similar to the clay sculpting ones. All the little crevasses - whew. Hopefully get to use them on my next piece! Thank you for the suggest - if these don't work out I will grab a clay sculpting set!
I'm not sure if the wood carving set would be more like chisels and dig into the wood. The clay set is more like using very tiny putty knives and dental pic tools.
Stunning!
