  • In this video I’ll be restoring a Dixie brand mid century modern dresser that was painted in black and white. I take it back to the mahogany veneer and add a new base using a self-centering dowel jig and pocket holes.

    Holy COW! It’s GORGEOUS!! And to think the previous owner covered up mahogany, with latex paint!! I’m amazed at your determination and a whole lot of patience to get all that paint off, with I think every tool in the toolbox. Thank you for another inspiring video of your awesome work.💜

    • @ReconstructingEmily
      @ReconstructingEmily  2 роки тому +5

      To be fair, it was likely blonde lacquer before they painted it. The stuff looks like plastic, which is seriously an unfortunate style trend. Though I won't necessarily defend the painter on this piece either for obvious reasons... Almost every tool was used! I had to be reminded by a friend that I had the detailed carbide scraper for the corners. Such a time saving tool! Thank you Ashley and happy holidays!

      I agree with Chic Antique. However, I do have one suggestion: When filming the "after" and you get done with focusing on the details and you finally pull back for that oh so satisfying shot of the whole thing, please make sure you GET the whole thing and then... linger! Not necessarily a very long time, just long enough I can hit pause and really get a good look. This is a pet peeve of mine, generally, with a lot of UA-camrs, but especially when the transformation is so dramatic and the end product so beautiful.

    Dowel joinery instead of the usual pocket holes is a very nice touch, stronger and longer lasting. The base looks original. The whole thing looks amazing.!

    • @ReconstructingEmily
      @ReconstructingEmily  2 роки тому

      Dowels lack the ease of 'just screw the boards together and be done,' but the fact I didn't really need to think about how I would center things was nice. Just had to make sure to drill the holes staggering for the dowels since the legs were narrow. I think the dowel jig will come in handy to make repairs less apparent too - hopefully! Thank you Clyde! Hope you're having a wonderful holiday

    Wow! When I was a kid a looooong time ago, that blond furniture was very popular. I thought it was so ugly and gross. I still hate the way it looks. I never knew it was mahogany under all that laquer and plastic shine. You have done an AMAZING job turning this ugly duckling into something beautiful. Not a swan - someone tried that already with all that white paint. You’ve created something better than the original, with the original wood exposed and a base that makes more sense. Lots of work, but so beautiful in the end. And you taught me how to get all that paint out of the grain, too. Wonderful, marvelous video!🌸

    • @ReconstructingEmily
      @ReconstructingEmily  2 роки тому

      Thank you Deborah! I think theres a lot of people who would look at the blonde finishes and think its laminate. Some of them are so thick a coating that it legitimately looks like plastic. Its probably my least favorite original finish. Though I did see an American of Martinsville dresser with almost a purple hue in the white lacquer. I think it was Walnut veneer under it so that might be why, but that finish looked nice. Also a high end brand so, probably better quality finish.

    While I appreciate so many of the refinishing projects that I've seen on UA-cam, sometimes it seems that chalk paint and black paint are used so much to cover beautiful wood grain. I've only just started watching a few of your videos, binge-watching, and I really love how you restore thecwood. And I feel that if you ever chose to use paint to cover finish it would be beautiful.

    • @ReconstructingEmily

      Thank you Mary! I do own a few painted pieces, but it makes sense for their use and placement. I also try to look heavily at the craftsmanship put into building something. Sure most of these pieces are made in a factory but someome had to assemble and put it together. I think its important not to lose that when possible.

    This is gorgeous! The new base really upgrades the look. Only thing is that poplar never takes stain evenly and the blotchy finish doesn’t complement the other finish. Perhaps a black painted finish would have solved this and made the piece look more cohesive.

      Maybe get a paint stripper company to sponsor me? Lol. I have a moderate rant I may slim down for my next video. To me its not so much about the paint but the quality in the work. (I do paint and own painted furniture.) Something as simple as putting tape in the drawer handle holes when painting so it doesnt drip in the drawer. Will leave it at this for now before many paragraphs ensue.

    I don't know how often you check older video comments but you might look at a nylon brush wheel for your drill, its gentle on wood but I've use it to pull paint out of crevices before and it worked surprisingly well. Got the idea from blacktail studios using it to clean off bark.

      I think I might have one on the shelf in my garage. Bought the multipack with the wire brush. If not I will look into it. The tiny little crevises are a beast sometimes. Thank you for sharing!

    I'm so glad you knew what to do each step of the way, what you were working with and that you kept the amazing hardware. I could tell it had been an great MCM piece originally. But it was abused with horrible makeovers. What you did to bring this back to life is fabulous and so fun to watch. Thanks for all the information and notes in the description below. One thing I noticed and then was very glad of, you have a wood saw that is exactly what I recently bought to work on a piece. Since I haven't used this type of Japanese hand saw before, I was glad to see it being used and felt a lot better about my purchase. Thanks for this great video and your information.

      The handsaw is one I have seen Elegant Upgrades use. Super handy little saw! Hers folds over though so she can take it with her. I need that lol. Not too difficult to use. Glad the information was helpful!

    I'm refinishing a project that has latex paint in all the nooks and crannies. I've been using a clay sculpting set to get into all the fine details with a thin layer of stripper to soften. This has worked amazingly well. Highly suggest.

      I actually recently purchased a small wood carving set. I imagine these are really similar to the clay sculpting ones. All the little crevasses - whew. Hopefully get to use them on my next piece! Thank you for the suggest - if these don't work out I will grab a clay sculpting set!

      I'm not sure if the wood carving set would be more like chisels and dig into the wood. The clay set is more like using very tiny putty knives and dental pic tools.
