The Rival Battle of this area is against Shadow the Hedgehog. The battle itself is fairly similar to the final battle against Shadow in Sonic Adventure 2, as you can tell from them bringing back the music. I wouldn't say it's hard, but it's rather annoying because Shadow will get the power ups before you a lot.
When one of them gets a power up, the music changes depending on who gets it. That's why I left in this run where Shadow got a power up, because it's pretty epic, rather than redo the stage until I get the power-ups first.
Restrictions
No Hit
No Death
No Equipped Skills
Must S-Rank
S-Rank
I'm fairly sure you have around 5 minutes to do this before you miss S-Rank. On Hard Mode, you have to grab another power-up so it's 3 total instead of 2. If you keep at it you'll probably eventually get all 3 before Shadow even gets one, though I'm not sure how to beat him to them, it seems random.
Trophies
You get a trophy for beating him on Normal Mode.
Tips
You're going to want to be in Boost the entire time. The stage throws tons of Rings at you constantly for you to do this for the most part. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe if Shadow Boosts you while you're not Boosting, you get hit, since that's what you do to him in that scenario.
Both power-ups only last the length of your Boost bar, so don't mess up when you get the power up!
S-Rank tip: Using "Start Over" causes you to lose a life, but still allows you to get S-Rank. Use this if you mess up. You can't use Start Over if you're on your last life. Furthermore, for some reason, if you use Continue after losing all lives, you can't S-Rank the Act. The way to fix this is to just choose Start Over after the Continue, then you can S-Rank it.

Chaos Control is Shadow's signature power in the Sonic Series. The only reason its in brawl is because its a reference to his ability to use chaos control in the series.

damn whenever i watch videos of this battle i can't help but think shadow has rubber band AI or something (he just catches up to you whenever the hell he feels like it)
I wasn't talking about the attack itself. I was talking about his voice, how it sounded just like in Brawl. I know where it came from.
I know this is an old video, but it's still pretty funny that you put "Skill" in the title because it implies that you need to be good at this game in order to beat this boss with an S rank. xD Even in hard mode, this shit is too easy... The ranking system is this game is no where near harsh enough. ;-;
Also, I recommend using the drift instead of the side step. It's much more efficient and I think it gives you extra boost energy.

+67yroldhobo Technically yes, but some titles were too long with that. It's supposed to be read as "no hit/skill/etc".

67yroldhobo 3DS version has a tougher ranking System. Could S all levels on PS3 with no problem, but I still suffer on 3DS lol
Why do you use quick step alot? You know you can still use analog controls with ease. In fact, it's easier if you do so. The only time you'll probably quick step is to make sure you ramp to the rails on the last part instead of going through the trick ramp and dealing with the really slow tricks, and the sharp right turn around 0:40.
Why in some version sonic needs 3 orbs but in the other ones sonic only needs 2 orbs to power up

By saying "chaos control" it is a brawl reference?. U mean the shadow trophy?..... in brawl it wasn't the first time shadow usses chaos control. So what the fuck do you mean with brawl's reference. Read a book.
