    I own this lens and have for several years.
    It is definitely not the lens in my possession that I use the most, but I do love to take pictures of tall buildings, especially cathedrals and such, and when I do that, I find that this lens can capture it in quite a unique way, one certainly no other lens I own can come close to matching. As you say, it absolutely stellar for that purpose.
    But yes, it is for that and relatively few other purposes. I guess that the tilt-shift functionality gives it some creative opportunities, but yes 17 mm is too wide angle most of the time.
    A niche lens that does a small number of things in a unique and awesome way.

    Actually, the primary purpose of this lens is for interiors. It’s true that it is occasionally needed for tight exteriors and is good extreme wide angle pano. But in most cases the 24 TS-E is more useful. The 24 is already very wide the 24 can also be used for stitching shots of tall buildings.
    However, for doing interiors especially architectural interiors this lens often is more useful than the 24.

    I like your straightforward style. Like others have mentioned, obvious stuff, the interior capabilites of the lens look quite impressive and pano shootng. Thanks.

    You are right it's a lot of money for a lens with such specifics BUT, at the end of the day I'm not sitting correcting stuff I could have otherwise corrected in camera. I'm on the edge right now with the purchase of the Canon TS-E 17mm or the Canon EOS EF 70-200 F2.8 L IS for my Canon EOS R "kit"

    You mention it's not an auto-focus lens and it's true. However, on my 24mm (but I suspect it's also the case for the other Canon TS lenses), when the focus is OK, the red dot is blinking and you ear a beep. This can help for short distances. Most of the time you set the lens to infinity.

      What camera are you using, Marc? I don't think my camera has a blinking red dot and beep when my manual focus lenses are in focus, but I could be missing something.

      @@GrantTakesPictures Hello Grant
      I am using a Canon 6D (The first version)

      I have read somewhere that the autofocus process works in AF/MF but in MF, the body doesn’t drive the focus ring. That’s why I get the beep and the red dot. However, this works only with Canon lenses. It works fine with my 24mm TS-E but not with a Samyang 14mm.

    What about for interior commercial real estate photography? I'm using a 15-35 now, but do a lot of distortion correction in post.

      This would be a perfect lens for interior commercial real estate photography. You'd save yourself a lot of time in post processing work if you had a tilt-shift that didn't distort your images in the first place. It's still an expensive lens, so it probably depends on how much time you're really spending to do that work and whether you can use that saved time to get more business to pay for the lens. But interior real estate photography is the #1 thing this lens excels at.

      Thank you! That's Anaheim City Hall. I've spent many evenings in that building and it holds a special place in my life.

    Have you use this with the 1.4 extender to make it a 24mm?

    • @GrantTakesPictures
      @GrantTakesPictures  3 роки тому

      I haven’t tried that. That would bring the maximum aperture to f/5.6. The Canon TS-E 24mm lens is an f/3.5, so you’d lose 1.33 stops of aperture by using the 1.4 extender on the 17mm instead of using the 24mm. I’m not sure what other issues you might run into using an extender on a tilt-shift lens.

      Works great with 1.4 II, the f5.6 is no issue for me, as I use tripod and shoot at F11 anyway :-)

    Probably the 24mm might be more of a versatile option for tilt shift

    • @GrantTakesPictures
      @GrantTakesPictures  3 роки тому +1

      Absolutely! I needed this wide one for a specific shot, but if I was buying one I’d probably go with the 24mm even though I have a 24-70mm zoom.

    Very incompetent recent news. I expected a more professional approach for such a professional lens.
