I've done aluminum casting before. Would recommend tossing some powdered flux on top, then stirring briefly and scraping off the slag from the top before pouring, for much better flow and finish.

It's important to make those holes so the formed sprues will vent the air as well as direct the molten metal into the casting chamber. Beautiful casting.
