I remember you recommending Peter and Alice, and I own it because of you! I started it years ago, temporarily DNF'ed it bc I didnt quite have the time/headspace to read it all the way through. This is a good reminder to get back to it! I also associate that book with you not only bc of the subject matter but bc it was one of those picks that made me glad I'd found/subscribed to your channel, as it was under the radar and I knew I wouldn't have heard about it anywhere else (like Beyond The Pale by Emily Urquhart. Classic Jen throwbacks :) )
Peter and Alice was one of the first recommendations I took from you. The fact that I’ve been following you (happily) for 8+ years now makes me feel thankful, but also old haha. My favourite recent short read is Green Fuse Burning by Tiffany Morris: a lyrical literary-horror novella exploring grief among other things. Absolutely amazing
Regarding books centered around dinner parties, you may consider Babette's Feast, by Isak Dinesen. Please note that I've only watched the film, but I absolutely loved it. I'm thinking the book may be wonderful as well.
Loved Idelicacy and Western Lane. I’d recommend any book of Annie Ernaux, How Kyoto Breaks Your Heart, Small Things Like These, Whereabouts, The Inseparables, Thirst for Love!
I remember you talking about Peter and Alice! It's always been in the back of my mind since then, and I've finally gotten my hands on a digital copy. Can't wait to read it 🤗
Lovely video. Short books are my jam, since I have ADHD and long books can be... overwhelming for me sometimes. So many good recommendations here. I read "Nails and Eyes" because of a previous video of yours and it didnt disappoint.
Love this list! I've been in a short books mood as well. Finally got around to reading Convenience Store Woman and loved it. Wanted more of a similar length and theme - sounds like a few of these might fit the bill. Would love more "double feature" recommendations - short or long. I'm often reading 2-3 books at a time so having some kind of be in conversation is always a nice bonus.
Can’t believe it’s been around 10 years since you first discussed Peter and Alice 😱but I’m happy I remember those videos 🥰🎉 thank you for the videos Jen!
I have a few of these on my physical tbr...soo hopefully will be getting to these soon! Thanks for the video and recs...have an awesome and lovely week Jen! 💙👍💙🤗🤗
I need to reread Peter and Alice! Kicking myself for leaving my copy in the UK. And absolutely unbelievable that it’s been a decade since you first talked about it on here 😱
Thankyou Jen, I'd been looking for a vlog on short novels and here it is. I'd like to recommend Foster by Claire Keegan, I was a wreck after reading this, and Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (written in response to Jane Eyre) also destroyed me. I've read What Willow Says and Mrs Caliban, loved them both.
Foster is on my TBR for the vlog that in filming at the moment, and I agree that Wide Sargasso Sea is very good, though my favourite Rhys is Good Morning Midnight ☺️ x
Oooo I need to look into some of these one of the prompts for the 52 book club challenge is a book that taste place in one day I know that’s not the same as a book you can read in a day but I’m still curious about them thank you for sharing they sound really good ❤
I loved Marigold and Rose by Louise Gluck. She won the Nobel for poetry a few years ago, and this is somewhere between memoir, prose, science fiction and poetry. Try it.
I read Strangers after you recommended it recently. OMG, how I loved that book! An absolutely perfect piece of fiction and so very Japanese. I’m so grateful for the recommendation. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I also adored Cold Enough For Snow when I read it a year and a half ago. Gorgeous book.
I have written six of these down...haven't read any. In my book group we need short books from time to time, and some of these look perfect. i am now reading Home Child, the novel in verse by Liz Berry about children in Care sent to Canada from 1860 to 1960, ostensibly for a better life. Utterly gripping, and heart rending.
Such a good book! If you haven't already seen it, this might be of interest; I interviewed Liz about her book here: www.toa.st/blogs/magazine/the-home-child-by-liz-berry-book-club x
Hi Jen All us strangers=marvellous. My recommend for a short book - my copy has 127 pages - is Angelica Garnett's Deceived with Kindness. Read on a Bloomsbury jag ages ago but stays with me. Daughter of Vanessa Bell, sister of the arguably more famous Virginia Woolf, until she believed hrr father was Duncan Bell. However.....
i loved 'the bridge of san luis rey" by thorton wilder, 'property' by valerie martin, 'the everybody ensemble:essays...amy leach and 'This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen :short stores...by Tadeusz Borowski and Dawn by elie wiesel....and yes the great divorce by c.s. lewis. all unique and powerful in my opinion...
To be honest, I was surprised Elena Knows by Claudia Piñeiro wasn’t on this list! Or The Secret lives of church ladies by Deesha Philyaw! But all the more lovely to hear about some of these new-to-me -books :) thanks for this, sending lovely vibes and comfy times to your direction
I like to talk about different things, and as I mentioned I chose not to include short story collections because I have a separate video on those linked in the description :) xx
✋have read Peter and Alice out of your recommendations. Maybe 6-7 years ago? Loved it. Read it twice. Bought a copy for a friend too. Funny thing is i don’t like Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland or Peter Pan (I couldn’t finish Peter Pan). But i really liked this play. I remember I did quite some research into the background of these two and some other people mentioned , or not mentioned, in the book. I enjoyed the book , despite how much damage it did to my soul, as much as the extended research. Thank you.
I didn’t like the Netflix version on passing however I haven’t read the book I need to stop by BN and pick it up finally they always have a copy of it in the shelves
Has it already been 10 years ??? Oh my God ! It means it has been on my wishlist for 10 years now haha. Time to actually buy and read it I suppose haha.
I would recommend Shipwrecks by Akira Yoshimura. It is about a poor fishing village on the coast of Japan. To supplement their meager lives the villagers burn fires in cauldrons with the intention of luring passing ships onto the rocky shoals where they founder, whereupon the villagers slaughter the crew and help themselves to the goods to be had on the ship. One day they get a little more than they bargained for though. It was a compelling story and at just under 200 pages it can qualify to be on your list.
If you haven’t read Stephanie Bolster’s award winning White Stone collection of Alice/Dodgson poems, I highly recommend them. So impossibly intelligent, provocative, surprising and even sometimes fun.
I read Permafrost when it came out in Spanish and I remember not being here nor there about it because I could understand the narrator’s point of view but I disliked her a lot (this is not always a problem but in this case it didn’t make me want to pick up the book each time I stoped reading). I think I should reread it though.
Thanks for being here, folks! Have you read any of these? What are your favourite short books? xx
An older short book that I love is The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby. Very moving nonfiction.
Ah yes, another blast from the past! x

I'm Dyspraxic, I struggle with predicting and intuiting body movements, so On Trampolining sounds really fascinating to me!
I think I´ve watched every single one of your videos since 2015 so yes, definitely remember you talking about Peter and Alice
I've just finished Tin Man by Sarah Winman! 195 pages I think!
I remember you talking about Peter and Alice! It's always been in the back of my mind since then, and I've finally gotten my hands on a digital copy. Can't wait to read it 🤗
Happy reading! Though actually, I’m not sure happy is the right word! x

I’d recommend Miss Ice Sandwich and Diary of a Void for more short books with Convenience Store Woman vibes ☺️ x
I disliked Convenience Store Woman and Diary of a Void for similar reasons! So if one worked for you I'd imagine the other would too 😂
Can’t believe it’s been around 10 years since you first discussed Peter and Alice 😱but I’m happy I remember those videos 🥰🎉 thank you for the videos Jen!

Heart of Darkness Joseph Conrad is a classic and a book I believe one could read in a day as well
i just searched that book up on goodreads and it sounds amazing! ill have to look into that one
@@missppbb7099 yes it’s a eye opening read I hope you enjoy it

I read Premonition by Banana Yoshimoto last month which is short and also a very enjoyable read. Thanks for the vlog. ❤️
My favourite by her is NP but I haven’t read it in about twelve years. Always wonder if it would hold up x

It’s a brilliant book x
Some short books rec: Chess, Blind Owl, Timecode of a Face, Open Water
Good idea especially if your short on time and just want to read.. love the channel chgo I'll
Take care of self..
The ‘Passing’ movie had great acting and was very beautifully shot, the tension of the book was missing for me though. ❤
Ah, that’s a shame x

I just read Galatea by Madeline Miller and it was unnerving and beautiful all at once.

I can’t say I vibed with her either 😂 x
I remember the play
🙌🏼
omgggg i remember peter and alice from your channel! i was in high school in 2014. . . how time flies :)
