wow. im not good at this but i finally took a beautiful photo of the moon. thanks. no tripod, no problem.
Brilliant I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
I've just tried to photograph the Moon for the first time and now I know my mistakes. Thank you so much! This is the best, short and right to the point video
Excellent ! Especially the lunar 11 rule. Thank you. Here's to tomorrow's moon 😊
No problem, I am glad the video was useful. Enjoy photographing tomorrows Moon. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Thank you. Your tips turned my white washed out ball into a GREAT moon picture!
Hi Jim, no problem, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, stay safe, Dave.
I get perfect moon shots as follows: 200 ISO, Aperture priority, F5.6 or 6.1, single point focus focused directly on the moon, EV 3 or 4 stops under. This is the key, the underexposure. The bright light of the moon gives you plenty fast of a shutter speed to hand hold, tripod even better. In post production do minimal adjustments. A little on exposure or highlights. That's it. Perfect every time.
Excellent, with a aperture of F:5.6/F:6.1 and the EV 3 or 4 stops down you are at the same exposure as using F:11 with no EV changes. You basically end up with the same settings used in the video. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Amazing tips and straight to the point tutorial. Thank you!
Short, simple, and easy to remember
Hi Marguerite, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, stay safe, Dave.
Tip #3 needs a caveat. With really long focal lengths, upwards of 400-500mm, the rotation of the Earth can and will move the Moon out of your viewfinder within a minute or two.
Tip #3 needs another caveat. When you are using a tripod, if your camera allows for mirror lockup, then use it. Your images will be much sharper, especially if you are using a very long focal length lens.
When it comes to camera settings, it is best to set White Balance to daylight. After all, the Moon is reflecting pure sunlight.
Also, use the same Looney 11 exposure rule irregardless of what phase the Moon is in. The only difference between a full Moon and a quarter Moon is how much is visible. There is no difference in brightness.
Finally, the Apollo astronauts described the color of the Moon as being the color of street asphalt, which has been covered with grey ashes similar to what might come out of BBQ grill.
Thank you for the additions all good points.
Excellent Tips, Dave. Thank You

Hi Christopher, that is great, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, stay safe, Dave.
I took some nice shots of the moon last night which was high up in the sky and very bright. I used the spot metering which gave great results.
Hi Paul, brilliant, yes spot metering works well, out of interest, what readings did it give you? Thank you for watching, stay safe Dave
Brilliant. Thanks. Got good moon. ☺
Excellent, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
I've tried a lot of settings on my Nikon D7200.. The best is iso 200 , Shutter 1/125 and f11
Yes, that would work well. It is one stop difference from the videos suggestions. I tend to go for a slightly darker image to bring out a bit more detail when editing. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
good for any lunar phase?
for handheld cam at max zoom, i keep shutter speed faster than 1/320 s, usually 1/400 or 1/500 s, to prevent blur from cam shake.
i use max aperture and iso 400 or less, depending on the phase.
I would agree with you. Your exposure would be the sunny 16 rule. 1/125sec @ f/11 would have the same exposure value (EV number) as 1/250 @ f/16 with an ISO of 200. In the past with film cameras I have used the sunny 16 rule for photographing the Moon and I came out fine. The same incident light coming from the sun to the Moon is about the same incident light that is coming from the sun to the Earth. The Earth is 93 million miles from the sun and our Moon is only about a 1/4 of a million miles from the Earth.
Can i do this in Nikon D5600???
sahil sahani yes
I just shot the moon by your tips, I like it, my 300mm did a nice work, expanded to 100 and cropped after that. So far so good. Thanks.
Liked the f11 rule. Learning all the time. Thanks for sharing
No problem at all, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.

Nice , my biggest lens is 200 mm but i'll have a go tonight and try it out. Thank you.
Brilliant, I hope it worked out well. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
@@ThePhotoShow nice,worked great.

Brilliant video, thank you
No problem, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
OMFG FINALLY! Someone who teaches so I can understand. Do you have online classes? I had Lyme Disease in my brain and nervous system and caused brain damage. Very hard for me to learn new things now.
Hi Nicolenya, thank you for your kind comments, I am really glad that the videos are useful. Hopefully I will have some online class available in 2018. You are very inspiring and I am happy that you are pushing forward and doing something you obviously enjoy. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Respect to Nicolenya! And great suggestion..
Dear Photo Show, please make a straight to the point, informative online course like this video, this year!
There are plans for an online course and possibly an e-book. I will keep everybody posted. Thank you for watching, have fun Dave.
Hello. I know a person that had and is managing this, just 1, and she is very pretty also, as you are from what I can see of your picture. How weird for me though, every time so far in my life that I hear of this disease it seems to be striking The pretty girls.
I don't know why sometimes I have to write when I see a comment or post. It's not that often and as I stated, and never about Lymes till now, something just struck a wave in me when I saw your eye. I hope things are Going well for you and your Ups far outweigh your downs.
Was it really necessary top blaspheme God to make your point? Really?
You’re the best thanks...
No problem at all. i am glad the video was useful. Enjoy photographing the Moon, thanks for watching, Dave.
Thank you so much sir! I learned something useful from your video. I am also interested in your tutorials. Lots of respect and love from India (Assam). Thank you!
No problem at all, I am glad the video was useful.Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave
It worked out amazingly good...
That is fantastic, glad it all worked.
1/60 F8 and ISO 100, Works a treat. And if you want to stack your images, Registax is free. Get version 5 then upgrade it to version 6. Old software but works a treat.
Hi Richard, that would work, the lunar 11 rule is just a good way to remember settings that will give a good result. I have tried the Registax and got some good results. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Thank you this helped
Hi Jessica, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.

No problem at all, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Great video! Gives me a good enough reason to wake up at 4 in the morning and pull out my camera :) Thanks.
It should be worth it, there are a couple of full Moons in January as well. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
The Photo Show like January 1st

Thanks for sharing
Lunar 11 rule works
Wow.. Thanks . 🌚🌚
Hi Shane, no problem I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
great tips! my dslr is prime on an 8" SC Telescope. Its f10, but i will def try and check the lunar rule out
Excellent, the settings should still give great results, f10 may give a slightly brighter image but you could always adjust the shutter speed or ISO to compensate. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
helped a lot, thank you 🌌🌌
No problem, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Steve Perry
thak u so much sir...i treid a lot bt cant without tripod...bt your advice make this done
Hi Al, no problem at all, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Nicely done
Thank you very much. Have fun, Dave.
I'm going to try this tonight. Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse! Thanks.
No problem at all, I hope your Moon photos turn out great. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
@@ThePhotoShow FYI, with your help, it turned out great!
Brilliant, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Thanks so much man, very practically and efective!!! Later you can explain why this formula?
Hi Paul, with the light from the Moon remaining fairly constant the exposure settings will usually remain the same as well. The f11 rule just makes it easier to remember, you could use f16, 200th sec at ISO 100 but that would be harder to remember. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
I’m just getting started and I’m using a small telescope and an iPhone X! It’s working out better than I would expect!
Cellphone, telescope photography is wonderful. I've been at it, over a decade now...🐰😷🌈
Worked 🤟🤟👍
Hi Armaan, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave
Always use spot metering
It's the most accurate way of exposing
And use ISO to control brightness.
Hi Karl, yes spot metering does work, with the Moon being fairly consistent in brightness the Luna 11 rule is just a quick and easy way to get great photos. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Thank you
Hi Vikram, no problem at all. I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Good Video.
Great tips. This Wednesday, 1/31/2018 is a rare lunar event that hasn’t happened since 1866: a super moon; blue moon; and a blood moon (red eclipse) all at the same time. I was looking for some tips to make sure I could capture it. Thanks!
No problem at all. Wednesday Super, blood, blue Moon should be great. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
thats exactly what i'm doing!
Well done.
Thank you very much, I'm glad it was useful. have fun, Dave.
Wonderful video
I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Thanks for a very short and right to the point video Dave. On this chilly bone freezing cold night, I used a Nikon kit lense at f/11 (as per your video) 300mm focal length and ISO200 but doubled the shutter speed to 1/400 and shot raw. The image came out great. On a side note, what's your recommendation for a prime lense for portrait photography? I am torn between 50mm f/1.8 and f/1.4 or do you have recommendation for something better? Cheers from Canada :)
Hi Rohit, I am glad the video was useful and your Moon photos worked out. Either of the 50mm lenses are great I would also have a look at the Sigma and Tamron options such as the Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG HSM Art - Nikon Fit. Great quality lenses are cheaper than the Nikon ones. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave
Hi congrats!! Mexican here with bad english, Last night I took pictures of the (before and during) the 20th January 2018 eclipse, before the eclipse the moon was 100% iluminated I decided to use the f/13 rule and the results were perfect, maybe it was more illuminated or the camera is doing weird setings or simply my pictures are slightly underexposed Lumixfz150
I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
I think I will try this great tips thanks
No problem at all. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
thanks brother
No problem, I am glad the video was useful, Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Thank you very much. Was able to click good pictures thru cannon 1200 200 lens
No problem at all, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
@@ThePhotoShow thanks infact I need to learn lot of things from you Dave. Cheers Aviator
Thank you very much, Dave.
Hi David great simple video, I'm just starting out so what camera would you suggest for a newbie as I'm looking at telescopes and camera packages on budget,
Very useful vedio..👌
Hi Fairy Land, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, stay safe, Dave.
The Sunny Sixteen rule should apply. The moon is an object directly illuminated by the sun, in sand/snow conditions. So at Sv=100/21°, set Av=22 and Tv=1/100s, you should be good. Using the reciprocal rule for focal length, with f=200mm, set Tv=1/200s, so adjust Av=16.
Your images make the moon too bright, highlight details are lost, and crater shadows on the moon are not shadows. Instead of the bright, white disc which the light meter gives us, you have instead a bright grey disc. take it down two more stops for better details, and punchier shadows.
It's an interesting theory, my only doubt is that with sand and snow the sunlight is being reflected back at a very short distance where as the Moon is a 1/4 of a million miles away.
The idea of the lunar 11 rule is to give a very simple technique to capturing an image of the Moon. I will give your setting a go next we have a full Moon in the UK.
Do you have any examples online that I could take a look at?
Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
