I know he was a fill-in until Pierce Brosnan could step in...but what a waste, I can't even watch that cartoonish crap when Pierce took over.

      It depends which book, because like the films they veer abruptly in tone. But the books where Fleming gives us a cynical Bond who's fed up and ready to snap, Dalton captures that perfectly. Better even than Craig in my opinion, though Craig is very good and a big improvement on Brosnan who I never really fell in love with. He was fine, but a bit vanilla and he looked more like a catalogue model than a guy who could beat you to death with your own shoes.

      It's underrated because at the time people were confused. They were so used to Bond being humorous and over the top, that a darker Bond felt jarring to them. They clearly didn't know that this is how Fleming envisioned Bond, so they wrote Dalton off as a knock-off of more serious action heroes. Then, these mediocre reviews stopped majority of people from watching it.
      Nowadays, Bond fans in particular are starting to see that this Bond was ahead of his time. I'm happy to see that LD and LTK are getting love that they deserve.

    In many ways Dalton's Bond felt kinda like a spiritual successor to Lazenby's, or rather the next step in that Bond's character development. Becoming far more cynical and worn from years as an agent, and from the tragic death of Tracey in OHMSS, for which there was no real catharsis.
    Something i feel is hinted at when Bond's former marriage is mentioned briefly early on in LTK.
    I also feel that the revenge story in LTK is boosted in part by this connection, with Felix's predicament paralleling that of Lazenbey's Bond at the end of OHMSS, and is something i feel fuels Dalton's Bond more than just retribution for Felix and his wife, but also pulls him back to the circumstances of Tracey's death.
    Which in a way allows his revenge to act as a sort of emotional resolve for the murder of his wife (Tracey) as well.

    • @SFNDMK
      @SFNDMK 8 місяців тому +1

      Another scene I feel that is a natural progression from Lazenby is when he is reprimanded by Saunders. Saunders telling him off and Bind going on a mini rant ending. Remember in The Living Daylights when he says “If he [M] fires me, I’ll thank him for it”... well Ladies and Gentlemen meet James Bond, the anti hero that Fleming created, a man of cynicism, intelligence and contradictions. An assassin who hates cold blooded murder, yet takes pride in his job. A man who has to be cold hearted, and yet is filled with rage and anger when a friend or ally is dealt a death blow. In Living Daylights when he thanks Saunders at the Prater Cafe, you see the gratitude, and then when Saunders is killed he is horrified and sad, but when Bond sees the balloon with the words Smiert Spionem... the rage he displays shows his humanity. Not one Bond can do that. Dalton IMO made Bond a flawed and interesting character.

    I remember reading in Tom Soter's "Bond and Beyond: 007 And Other Special Agents" how License To Kill was actually supposed to star Mel Gibson, the Producers fashioned a Bond Flick with Joel Silver type Lethal Weapon action and mayhem, they even signed Michael Kamen (who did the score to the Lethal Weapon 2) to score License to Kill. The idea was to get Gibson to guide the Bond Franchise into the 90's, which explains the Lethal Weapon type violence you see in License to Kill. The Sharkey character would've been played by Danny Glover had Mel Gibson gotten the 007 part, making his death that much more important. Don't know who would've played Felix Leiter (Carl Weathers?) .... I also read somewhere how even though he had been signed for a multiple picture deal, Dalton wasn't a lock to repeat as Bond, eventually Gibson passed on the project forcing the Producers to go back to Dalton to portray Bond.

    I think the public would've been more ready for Dalton's take on Bond if he had started with the first 80s Bond film, For Your Eyes Only. If you take a look at all the actors besides Dalton and Moore, and Lazenby because he got one film, you'll notice most of their films were from a certain decade and at least one was from the next. For example: Connery, most of his films were from the 60s, but his last movie came out in 1971. Pierce Brosnan, three of his films were from the 90s, and Die Another Day was in 2002. Daniel Craig, while having played Bond for two decades, his last film is coming out during the beginning of 2020, a new decade. Moore and Dalton are the outliers here because Moore continued into the 80s and I'm pretty sure that diverted people's expectations for a new actor they have to get used to playing Bond. In short, Timothy's Bond had no room to grow because of Moore's.

Licence took chances with the formula and has aged well for it. Great review, Chris.
