It is funny that the actor who had been protested the most because of his lack of resemblence to the classic Bond, portrayed the closest Bond that is created by Fleming.

My father LOVES James Bond. He watched them all many many times. When my siblings and I were babies, he used to play them over the VCR cassettes as he gave us bottles at night. He was dubious when Daniel Craig was cast. The first weekend Casino Royale came out, he didn't want to go see it. On Monday, at school, one of my friends went to see and praised the movie. Thanks to her, I convinced my father to go see it. We both LOVED it, and we went to see every other Craig's Bond movie ever since. Cannot wait for No Time to Die!

Here's my perspective on the Bond movies
Sean Connery- A very very nice run, and apart from the plot to Diamonds Are Forever they never got too silly despite him having basically all the big spectacle Bond movies, and his portrayal of Bond was basically a more well done version of Roger Moore's portrayal, Sean Connery was a great Bond.
George Lazenby- I'm just gonna say it, I hated OHMSS and I hated Lazenby's portrayal of Bond, he tried to have the wit and charm that Connery had but he was just so stiff and lifeless that those attempts at humor just fell flat and overall it was just a chore to sit through
Roger Moore- A very terrible run if you ask me, apart from For Your Eyes Only and The Spy Who Loved Me, I thought this era was really bad, we were forced to stomach 5 movies that felt more like Austin Powers movies than Bond movies, for those last 5 movies I was just sitting there thinking "what the hell am I watching!?!" Not a good era at all
Timothy Dalton- I'll be completely honest, I loved Dalton as Bond as well as both movies, they were darker and a lot more grounded, which is what Bond originally was like, and these 2 movies you could argue set the stage for what the Daniel Craig movies would be like, and I loved this era
Pierce Brosnan- Now, I didn't flat out hate his last 3 Bond movies but they are pretty bad, Goldeneye was good but the last 3 movies were like someone took the later Connery Bonds and cranked the giant spectacle up to 11, and they were a pretty big slap in the face compared to what Goldeneye was
Daniel Craig- In my opinion, Craig is the best Bond we've ever had, he's pretty much a combination of the badassery of Dalton and a much more subtle and relaxed version of Connery's ladies man portrayal, and all 3 movies were grounded and realistic, never stepping into the cheesy world destruction plots that the other Bonds have had, and I loved everything about this version of Bond

Agree with you wholeheartedly Ben, your analysis is 100% on point, in my humble opinion tough "A View To A Kill" is the epitome of not only the worst Bond movie ever made, but one of the worst films of all times ever made, so disappointing, and I've watched hundreds of bad cinema. Literally, it appears that Roger was there just to pick up his check.

@@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770 Well, the comment was quite brazen in its defamation of Moore's portrayal. As a Moore fan myself, the silliness and lackadaisical attitude of his Bond is what sets it apart for me, in a good way. @ricardocantoral7672 4 роки тому +3

Lazenby gets way too much crap. He was a first timer hence his wooden acting but the role of 007 fit him like a glove. He had charm in spades, convincingly cool under pressure, and the man knew how to kick ass; He moved like a panther. On Her Majesty's Secret Service ? A terrific melodrama on an epic scale; beautifully photographed, a Bond girl that was perfectly developed, and Bond and the MI6 regulars feeling like a tight knit group that genuinely felt for one another. Blofeld and his motives were rather undercooked and the escape from Piz Gloria felt like one, long interminable action sequence but easily one of the best Bond films. With the exception of The Spy Who Loved Me, NO subsequent Bond film has come close to matching it's brilliance. As for the subsequent Bond actors, Moore was a lot of fun who could convincingly charm a woman but Bond has to be a lover AND a fighter. Timothy Dalton brought the much needed danger back to the character and in his first film, he was Fleming's invention though he could be a tad too sour. Brosnan succeeded in doing a good Connery imitation but he never really brought anything else to the role. Daniel Craig was definitely an improvement but he seems to be channeling Jason Bourne instead of James Bond.

And aside from action alone, the story, humor and characters are much better in 3. Seriously, try remembering the first movie. There is a great action scene in the beggining, and in the end. The rest of the time nothing really happens in this movie.

On Spectre, it was good all the way until Bond and Swann walk casually into the Spectre compound. The moment they got off the train, the writing dropped to zero. It was like they spent all their money on the first half of the script, then realised afterwards that they only had enough cash for the shittiest, most cliche third act ever. It was also a pretty bad ending.

The time that is spent towards this villain is good. We see that he is desperate to win and you could taste the regret in his eyes.

Excellent review! This and Skyfall are my favorite Craig Bond films. I will mention that Eva Green's character after her death is revealed by M to have taken part in the double cross because it was the only thing that kept Bond from being murdered earlier during their kidnapping. So I just watched this movie again last night, and then came back to your review, for the 3rd time or so. I am struck every time I see Casino Royale with how amazing it is!! I love that you love it, Chris, because I fangirl so hard on this movie. (Not just for Daniel Craig, although I have been known to fawn over him a time or two.)
It just feels so well made to me. The character of James Bond is at his most cocky after just being promoted and he is ready to go and do whatever gets thrown his way. He thinks he can handle anything and you get the feeling he can. He is so competent, he is almost the assassins.
It makes it all the more heartbreaking and exciting when he falls into place as 007 after the betrayal of Vesper. I always hope for a different outcome, that they could sail away together and have a happy life. So sad. He will always carry that heartbreak around.
    Bravo to this movie!
(Side note: I guess that's why I hate at the end of Spectre when he is ready to quit for this chick he knew 2 days! After Vesper, who the hell is this girl?)

This is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. I mean EVER. Never mind that it belongs to a beloved, iconic 50+year series that portrays one of the most perfect protagonists ever thought up by a writer, this is a stand alone GREAT movie. I love seeing Casino Royale proving its brilliance through the test of time and becoming more and more appreciated with time (especially as the love of Skyfall fades (as it should) and Casino Royale stays its course... as it should. I love coming back and seeing newer comments years later of people speaking more and more of exactly the same things I saw this movie had with every bit of brilliance in its every scene. It's nearly as perfect as a movie can be in SO many ways: It has some of the best action you will ever see (that is NOT CG that is lazily thrown at the dumbed-down masses who ooh and ahh at that garbage). This is as much a REAL movie as they get. It has superb character development, alternating segments of suspense, emotion, feel good moments, and edge of your seat moments, with realism of villains and dialogue.. DANG it's got such great dialogue and banter. It also has a more complex act structure that so many movies fail to deliver today. 4 and 5 acts instead of the usual 3-part act, with each one offering material that would be used as the main plot to lessor movies.
And it's a beautiful film: characters, sets, women, wardrobes, with charisma abound among Bond, the leading women, the secondary characters, and loaded with some of the most beautiful, exotic locales (sunny, tropical, bright and pleasurable places, not dark, dungeony, dull and depressing like in the Sam Mendes-directed movies of Skyfall, Spectre). Casino Royale has a director in Martin Campbell (also Directed GoldenEye) who knows HOW to portray Bond as he should be, that other directors can't compare (i.e. again, Sam Mendes --who knows nothing about injecting the much needed masculine qualities to a leading character such as James Bond that every scene demands). You really admire Bond in Casino Royale. Much less in the later Bond movies. And did I already mention REAL stunts that Casino Royale has?... really great, even Guiness book record-breaking real stunts.
From the opening scene to the final punch and black out of the last scene to start the rolling of the ending credits, Casino Royale takes you for a MOST-ENTERTAINING ride; and a ride with a story! --- you remember that thing called a story that movies are supposed to have, and an even GREATER movie has when it is a COMPLEX story? Yeah, it's got that ...and everything else. Watch it. This movie will be loved forever !

One of the best ones ever is near the beginning of "Hunt for Red October" - which stars Sean Connery (coincidentally) as a Russian submarine Captain.
He's chatting in Russian to his crew - there's a cross-fade, and he's now talking in English - but it's seamless.
Then there's the interview scene from Blade Runner - where Harrison Ford is asking "Rachel" over 100 questions. The use of the cross-dissolve in this scene is masterful, condensing what must have taken an hour or more into just 2 minutes.

Cornell's You Know My Name was pefect as far as being a male alternative to the sultry female chanteuses numbers for Bond films of the past. It was fast, sounds retro and is powerful. Plus Cornell's vocals, his voice was so unique man. Plus, the accompanying music video which has the almost spy looking Cornell in an intense life threatening situation. Complete with femme fatale. The guy looked like an aging male model towards the end of his life let's face it so it was all perfect! Maybe the closest music video to go along with a Bond film since Duran Duran did A View To Kill. Although much less campy! One of the best Bond themes ever! God I miss that guy...RIP Chris! The best female sung theme in the last fifteen years was The World Is Not Enough by Garbage. Shirley Manson's vocals were reminiscent of Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger in their passion and effectiveness. Another great video featuring a spy/femme fatale like Shirley Manson with a great twist at the end.

Lazenby was the first to fit your description of a "more human" Bond. Dalton did it too

Spectre pissed me off by creating a love interest so soon after Bond lost the first woman he loved thereby causing him to be distant with women and seeing them only as sex objects.

an amazing theme song, so underrated, i loved it from the get go. And I was one of the naysayers about Daniel Craig but totally converted by Casino Royale. So much grit and reality, great movie.

Love when actors like Daniel Craig and Ben Affleck destroy the haters by giving the best performances of these iconic characters after they've been hated on.

7:25 is why Daniel Craig is my favourite Bond ever. Because unlike the previous (still great) Bond actors, Craig actually made him an actual human being in that one scene. Something all the other Bonds failed to do, attempted or not.
