    Isn’t it sad that you have to justify your choices for fear of judgement and criticism! You clearly think through your consumer choices and your animal product consumption is no different. Keep doing what you do and ignore the haters - there are plenty of people who respect that you make your own choices based on the information and ethical purchasing options available to you, and that it isn’t anyone else’s business to judge you xx

      Animal agriculture is one of the most wasteful industries that exists. There's no reason to support it when we can get all of the nutrients we need from plants.

      Louisa Hula but that is your choice not hers - we should respect others choices as their own free will - even when we don’t agree with them. I myself am vegetarian and avoid dairy and eggs as much as possible (we have a nut allergy so a lot of vegan options we can’t have in our house) - but that is my choice. You are just a disrespectful vegan warrior who brings the whole movement into disrepute - so good luck with that and recruiting zero new followers to the movement by being a dick about it!

    First off, I just found your videos and subscribed! Also, as a vegan myself, I find it sad that you have to give a disclaimer to your own personal choices. It's my choice to be vegan and it's your choice to make the right decisions for your body. Whatever you think is right for you, is right.
    On another note, I have curly hair and have found that I don't even need to use a dry shampoo or shampoo bar. So anyone with dry or curly hair, I just use an apple cider since twice a week and I love it. Will occasionally need a wash, but I make a diy "wash" and that's only every other month or so.
    Great video and thanks!

    I'm glad you're transparent with the products you use and when you use plastic. In my opinion, I don't think there's anything wrong with using plastic as a reusable material. Plastic has done a great job keeping costs of products low. However, the disposable culture created with plastics, to me, is the problem. They are in clothes, food containers, etc that tend to be thrown either immediately or after a few months. Plastics are a long-lasting material, so to treat them as a long term reusable in products that are meant to last generations, like glass/metal/bamboo, is how it should have been treated. I understand that removing plastic from our lifestyle will help combat the disposable plastic culture, but I look forward to seeing the day when plastic being used properly, as a long-term, reusable material.

    Hi Kate, catching up on your videos! :) Interesting that you mentioned the baking soda being horrible for your hair because I'm surprised I haven't heard that from more people. I am a professional hairdresser and baking soda is not pH balanced with hair, so it's actually not healthy for your hair at all. I was concerned when the no-poo method started gaining popularity but it seems to already be dying out, probably because of this fact!

    Love this! I wish more places and companies allowed for refills. I have certain medical issues requiring products which unfortunately use a hell of a lot of plastic (inhalers, glucose strips, creams etc.) and wish so badly that I could just get refill sachets of the creams, biodegradable testing strips, and only get the canisters for my inhalers so I could keep the plastic actuator. As for salt deodorants, I have really enjoyed using them. I use a stick and a spray: the stick lasts ages, and a refill for the spray is so ridiculously easy to make so I can enjoy aesthetically-pleasing packaging while not having to buy more plastic. I have hyperhidrosis and of course it is NOT an antiperspirant but for me they have been great for odour control. If only other companies offered refills. I dream of a world in which being plastic-free is easy and accessible for everyone: where you can just go to the local supermarket and everything is packaged minimally, all packaging is biodegradable, recycled+recyclable, or next to refills, and anyone can do the same weekly shop they always do but with no single/short-use plastic.
    For people with sensory issues some things can be difficult so a couple of lil suggestions to look at if:
    1. you struggle with the wooden toothbrushes -- try wheat fibre toothbrushes! They aren't quite as good as bamboo ones environmentally, but they feel just like matte plastic and are taste-free.
    2. metal straws against your teeth or wooden straws in your mouth are a no -- try a folding metal straw with a silicone inside. Kinda hard to describe but it's metal on the body thus maintaining its integrity, it folds up small but bending it doesn't cut off the flow, and the silicone ends are soft and chewable so it sits in the mouth comfortably.
    And Denttabs now do toothpaste tabs with fluoride!! Best of both worlds!
    Side note as someone very much into scientific research and cosmetic formulating: many synthetic ingredients are completely fine for their uses and certain synthetic ingredients, such as preservatives, are 100% necessary in water-based products! There are also quite a few cases in which a synthetic version of a certain thing is better than the original, such as in medications, where the synthetic version is completely bioidentical to the human version (e.g. insulin), or safer because it has been refined and rigorously tested and regulated.

    This was a wonderfully detailed video. I am at the beginning of my no plastic, zero waste journey. I am starting with myself and using myself as an example for my husband and 3 young boys. I figure it has to start with someone and that someone is me. Hopefully, it will be all 5 of us. It will take time. Better than nothing. I have them recycling so much more than the trash we actually have. That is a start. Hearing how our recycling is not doing what we expect it should have me going another step to helping our world. Thank you, your information is very much appreciated.

    You should be wearing sunscreen/block every time you go outside. You get your daily requirement of Vitamin D in 20 minutes of going outside in the course of a normal day during daylight hours (even if it's cloudy). Remember, you get sun exposure on your hands, ears, back of the neck, scalp, etc. so even if you have sunscreen/block on your face, you're still getting unmitigated exposure in other areas.
    Furthermore, even in the shade you can be exposed to UV rays by being around reflective surfaces.

    just be weary with coconut oil! It breaks some people out. Even if I use it in my hair it breaks out my face and neck all over. Also, with toothpaste I would recommend to use fluoride. It is not unhealthy in small amounts, plus you spit it out anyways. You are more at risk to tooth decay if you don't use fluoride. Love the video though! It is inspiring me to make a few changes as well.

    I also eat meat, but I have incorporated more beans and veggies into my diet. It doesn't hurt to add more greens...and it's good for my waistline.Plus I cut up my meat into smaller pieces than I used to...especially in stews. It makes me think there's more. I buy in big packages & portion it out smaller than I used to, to make it stretch for a longer time. I just can't quit meat but we do meatless meals a few days a week. Thus decreasing my meat consumption.

    If I can offer some advice: A metal container is MUCH safer than glass for used blades. Or even sturdy plastic. A cheap one can be made by just cutting a slit in the top of a can of broth, pouring the broth out, rinsing a couple times, and labeling it "sharps". You can even make it pretty by painting it. Or a large pill bottle with a slit in the cap and glued shut. Or you can buy a nice blade bank online for a few bucks that will last a long time. Also, I'm told used blades should always be labeled as "sharps" and disposed of like used needles by dropping off at a local hospital.

    #nopoo: Baking soda is definitely too aggressive for any kind of hair. I love using rye flour mixed with water instead, but you should keep the vinegar rinse to remove all of it. It works perfectly for me because the starch in the flour only absorbs the superfluous grease on your head. You shouldn't use wholegrain flour though, because it's gonna stay on your head. I couldn't believe it works, but it feels awesome and really healthy. Even though I don't rinse out the apple cider vinegar, I never smell anything.

    All the vegans in the comments shaming her for eating meat. Ummmm.... It is her choice, her body, not yours. Just as you don't like people judging you for being vegan, don't judge her or any others for eating meat. I eat mostly a vegan diet now, but I still like eating meat and my body actually feels more satisfied eating meat than just plant protein alone. As long as animals are killed for food in a humane way, it is okay to eat it. As a former peta member and vegan, it is quite insane to shame people for their decisions on what to eat. I used to think that it would be better that people starve to death than eat any meat if that was their only food source, and how terrible that is to wish death on someone because you care more about an animal's life than a human being's life. If we are just animals, then it is perfectly acceptable to eat other animals for survival, just as other carnivorous animals are. If we are the superior species and dominant over animals, then it is perfectly acceptable to eat meat.

I make my own deodorant with coconut oil, baking soda, arrow root powder and bentonite clay. No odor and it didn’t mess up the ph on my pits. The baking soda was too harsh alone. For travel it tends to melt so I make up the dry powder and take some coconut oil with me in separate container that doesn’t leak. Or keep my deodorant in the cooler with the food lol

    Hello, I make my own deodorant with 1 part of water do 2 parts of magnesia milk. You can also add a few drops of some essencial oil for scent. I use it in a spray bottle. It works very well.

    What are your thoughts on fluoride in toothpaste? :)

    • @amandae4618
      @amandae4618 6 років тому +1

      Francesca fluoride is so confusing. It's supposed to be great for your teeth. That's why people in the city often have healthier teeth than the country (cities add fluoride to tap water and in the country you have well water) but there are some studies that it may or may not be a carcinogen.

    I must comment on this. Temperature has nothing to do with the need for sun protection everyday the sun is out even on cloudy days where as much as forty percent of the suns rays still get through. A person risks skin cancer and skin aging with any and all unprotected exposure to sun. We live in a very fortunate time where spf is relatively affordable and easy to come by so please anyone reading this protect yourself properly it is truly very important and not that hard to do now.

    • @aquietwild
      @aquietwild 6 років тому

      Adrienne Holladay true that temperature isn’t causally related to UV strength but it is correlated, eg the sun rays are stronger and more damaging closer to the equator which is where it tends to be hotter.

    • @katana5097
      @katana5097 6 років тому

      And there my dermatologist told me in our climates we should go out more without sun protection for Vitamin D production. So of course, don't bake the whole day half naked in the sun, but daily use of sunscreen is not necessary!

    • @SuperHammy95
      @SuperHammy95 6 років тому

      That is a fair point but science has proven that the sun causes both good and bad exposure to the body and you get the good vitamin D for strong bones but the bad from rays that break down collagen and can cause cancer. So I would be much more likely to rely on vitamin D supplements as one risk is greater than the other but your doctor has a point it just seems slightly flawed in its one sided approach. Also we do get some vitamin D as most of us do not apply spf properly to truly protect 100% ,myself very much included, so when we chose to wear spf it is not as though we block out all of the suns rays altogether.

    I love Marseille soap and Aleppo soap. For deodorant, I use apple cider vinegar and my husband use alcool. I also make my own mouthwash which you don't seem to use. One day, I will purchase a safety razor but I still have the same pack of disposable blades I purchase more than 10 years ago. I change the blade really seldom because I don't shave my legs. Also I wanted to thank you because I didn't even know tallow soaps were on the market again! I even read that it's good for eczema so I will try it for sure, thanks!

    I’ve been using an epilator for about a year now. I haven’t needed to use a razor. Your legs won’t be “silky smooth” as if they were shaved. But they are hair free, and I don’t have to do it everyday.

  • @ElisabettaVS
    @ElisabettaVS 5 років тому +2

    If you put only a little bit of apple cider vinegar (a real "splash") on about 750ml or a liter of (shower-) water, then you are fine and don't need to rinse out. You want to close the scale layer of your hair by using the rinse, you can also just rinse with ice cold water, that has the same effect. It will leave your hair shining and soft. I never rinse out my apple cider vinegar rinse and once the hair has dried it doesn't smell at all. Unless I have used too much :D

    I have a Van Der Hagen safety razor and it just has a little bit at the bottom of the handle that twists and opens up the top so you can set the blade inside. It’s so easy to clean and change the blade, and I’m super clumsy!

      The LissoWay yes! Good on you. I’m doing this too. I already started making my own. My fav is sugar sea salt hairspray! I use the same plastic bottle that had the pro hairspray in it. I wish I knew this recipe a long time ago. I also was going to buy a shave soap in paper but then I realized I didn’t need it since I have laser hair removal and when I do need to shave rarely I just use water in the shower!

      It depends on what kind of bulk you're looking for. I live in California and WinCo and Raley's have bulk food sections for grains, flour, cereals etc. You could try farmer's markets, or local shops perhaps, for soaps and other natural body care items. I understand your struggle though! Hope this helps :)

    Lovely to see another video from you Kate. Yay for Fat and the Moon! I’m so glad that recommendation has worked for you guys in a few different areas of life-I use the same deodorant as your hubs and it’s great. I will have to see if I can locate a kids’ natural bristle brush in Canada because I have, sadly, had to switch back to a plastic toothbrush for now (*sob*) because I need the extra soft bristles for my receding/sensitive gumline.
