Yeah and he’s doing exactly that by standing up for his men. If he was sounding like a politician he’d try to appeal to the lowest common denominator and say all the right things to make you lot happy. Instead he and the team had the balls to take a stand and voice their opinion .
Might the elephant in the room here be the generational differences at play. JL is too intense (for me) means that he's giving a level of feedback that some of the players simply can't handle and in this digital/social media age perhaps Millenials and Gen Z are hard-wired differently and less accustomed to the older/harder/more visceral approach????
Yeah I think you're pretty spot on. Whether you love it or hate it, times change and you have to be willing change with it, or you run the risk of being left behind.
Pat acknowledged that JL changed the culture of the team for the better and now he's been knifed. There are some odious people in the team and I wouldn't be surprised if the culture deteriorates again.
I have great respect for Pat Cummins and I think he'll be a very good captain and lead a great side into the future . . but what a horrendous pincer he's been caught in. Between the fumbling and inept management at CA, the large team of players and personalities he leads, the former players and commentators who are "outraged" at the treatment of JL, the fans, and the media . . what a baptism of fire! That he looked uncomfortable during the interview is hardly surprising. What torrid waters he had to navigate . . with so many stakeholders and factions and vested interests to please and appease. Although I don't always agree with the grumpy Ian Chappell, I think his perspective on this matter has been sound. JL's cricket mates are far too close to be objective or reasonable - they're fired up and angry and lashing out. I think the piece by Mitchell Johnson was over the top, unfair, and unnecessarily accusative. Maybe he's selling newspapers and needed a headline. But I think Chappell is also right on the role of the Captain being more - or just as important as - that the Coach(es) . . and that the kerfuffle will blow over eventually and that a new distribution of power and influence will emerge and settle itself. I think JL was dealt with very clumsily by CA and I am sad for him but deep down perhaps the tide had turned and the senior players felt that he had done his job - and done it well - but that there was a need and a desire for a fresh start. Clearly, there were elements to his personality which were counter-productive around the players who felt that his mood swings and his intensity were sometimes harming their confidence and self-esteem. God knows cricket is a brutal sport - a confidence game - so much between the ears . . and players can be shattered by the pressure to perform and are constantly harassed by media chatter and commentators who are all too ready to put the boot into an underperforming player. I hope Pat can move on and focus on the future, and I hope cricket fans will give him a break and recognize he was put into a very difficult position here today.
This doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence. Seems like the players know what they want, but do they know what they need? Considering the reports of disunity in the camp, I think some of those players could use a bit of tough love, especially considering how much they get paid to do this job. If we have a new coach and we start playing poorly, are we gonna keep him on because he tells the players what they want and coddles them? Players have too much of a say in this day and age. I don't think it's the fault of the players; they have their opinions and they are entitled to them. It's on the board. They should be putting the foot down and realising what a bad reflection it is on them.
Ok boomers! Gee so much hate here. Langer was laying the dad energy on thick, and these are grown men who are sick of being patronised. "Don't rub it!" when a guy gets hit in the nets. They want a more collaborative problem solving approach. Less stress. Sounds pretty sane to me. Cummins is new to the job, not super polished in his delivery, but still lands many good observations. "We're all professionals". There's more than one way to play test cricket. There's more than one way to be a man. Cummins is making sure his team is defended and united, and he's got good emotional intelligence. That's leadership.
Everyone is forgetting that Australia are on the road a lot this year. If there were problems between Langer and the players when they have played most of their cricket at home for the last 2.5 years, then it was never going to work moving forward. Too many people are stuck in the past when it comes to the Australian cricket team. You need to let go eventually!
Yet Lehman and players were the problem 2 years ago. Langer and Paine saved the team and. They just told Langer to f off. Looks like we will need a Langer type coach in another 12months Cummins wants control of the team, play less 50 over cricket to play IPL and test cricket. What joke
Actually it would be the easiest way in the world to make 2 mill a year. All you have to do is oversee the players, pat them on the back and tell them they are absolute world-beater's. Don't upset them, don't work them too hard, I might apply myself.
So let me get this right, the players involved in the cheating scandal 4 years ago, get to impose their will, by first getting Tim Paine out and then to remove the coach that had to clean up the mess. It's like letting the crooks being in charge of bank and asking them to behave. My prediction the culture will slowly slip backwards into a mess. Collaborative Coaching doesn't work but I guess the new woke captain knows everything. You still need someone to make those hard decisions and criticise even the captain. I was a big fan of Pat, not anymore. Nothing but a scheming self promoter. Like all Wokesters, they lack maturity and wisdom.
Agreed. I couldn’t be more disappointed in Cricket Australia and this group of “legendary champions” who thrashed a depleted, understrength English side at home and now think they’re kings. RIP cricket Australia.
He's so uncomfortable throughout this interview. It feels like it is forced. What a poor situation CA and players have created for themselves and Australian cricket.
Ha all you boomers in the comments. Sorry but if a coach of a top level team has lost the players then there’s no coming back. This is a positive move for Australian cricket and I’m glad Pat and the team stood up for themselves. All these golden generation players just have a big mouth and want to stay relevant.
Cricket Australia are quick to recruit the old guard when the proverbial hits the fan because of outright cheating by some current players...and when the storm passes they throw the old guard on the proverbial heap and the current woke Millennials and Gen Z players cheer them on....have a look at the current Cricket Australia board members bio's and that is all you need to know about what is wrong with cricket and the broader society.
who is running cricket? it certainly isnt CA.....it seems that CA is pandering to the team n certain elements are running rough shod over the rest...they forget that they are the end product of the system, they do not run the system! i n many others are disgusted with the way the players have taken over n how soft n wilting CA has become

Every generation feels the next generation is soft, or whatever. As a 60 year old, that is one of the things that disappoints me about getting old, how many of my generation are complaining old men. Nobody really know who was right or wrong. Can the players be better without Langer, we will find out won't we. Until then, we have no idea what is right or wrong.
