I agree. Blown away by her playing. I wish she had played more Bach. As far as I can tell on UA-cam, she plays one each on the 6 English and French suites and partitas. They're all heavenly. Her English Suite No. 3 is perfection -- along with her Schubert, Mozart, Chopin....
Very expressive, sensitive and melodic.Lovely dynamic range. There's no doubting it; Maria lets Beethoven's score speak for itself - no selfish melodramatic demonstrations as so many pianists do when trying to place their mark on this sonata. The third movement just flows and the gentle parts are so gently executed. Beautiful! This is truly music for music's sake. Thanks for uploading.
*Beautifully performance Sonata No. 17 ♫❤ Recently I watched an interview with Maria João Pires, and I realized that it was not only an outstanding musician and pianist, but also a wonderful person with great wisdom and pleasant disposition. ツThank you greetings from Poland*
Yes! The key pressure is perfection. I adore Pires ❤ Her rendition of Bach's English Suite No. 3 is astonishing to me. And her Mozart, and her Chopin.....
Sorry, my little baby boy hit that button because I was playing it too loud and it interfered with his Justin Beeber concert.... But I did hit the up button to compensate.
Maria has such a good interpretation for this piece! Her style is different from Daniel Barenboim's and they are both lovely. It's very interesting to discover different understanding from different musicians. Bravo!
This, and the rhapsody in blue are my two goals as to what I want to play on piano. My teacher just ordered this so I can start to learn it but rhapsody may be a little into the future. I will do it though. And my music will be heard by people just like you guys someday.
This is a good reference. I don't always agree with her view of certain music, especially her Chopin, but here, listening to the Allegretto (last movement) of The Tempest, I'm glad to hear her not "banging" the keyboard as so many pianists do on the last movement of The Tempest. A very nice performance.
If you have the Schnabel editions (or even the Schirmers edition), the Beethoven piano sonatas, they are split between 2 books. This one is the last sonata in Book 1.
The opus 31. no. 2 "Tempest" is the 17th sonata by order of listing. By order of completion, this would be ranked 20th. The opus 49 no. 1 and 2 Sonatas 19 and 20) were composed five or six years earlier, and Beethoven completed Opus 31. no. 3 (listed number 18) before he completed this one.
Er, well...it is the 17th out of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas. It was published as part of his Op. 31, which is a set of three piano sonatas. It is the second sonata in that set, hence "Op. 31, No. 2". It' really not that complicated.
I just have 2 reservations: The 1st is the speed of the opening arpeggio in the 1st&2nd movements. I feel they're too rapid. My 2nd reservation are the turns in the 2nd movement (see 10th bar). Beethoven was very specific; an 8th note tied to a 32nd note followed by a triplet of 64th notes, ending in two ascending 32nd notes; the 1st of these last 2 notes is not a dotted 32nd followed by a 64th as Maria plays it. Listen to Richter & Pollini play it & you'll see. I still adore Pires' performance!
@Bill Alexander I am so happy that I am not a musicologist and just listen to the music instead of being masturbating my mind with minimal details and comparing this interpretation with that of any other player.
Not my taste at all! Listen to Hélène Grimaud much better, IMHO! Solomon (Cutner), Wilhelm Backhaus and Friedrich Gulda are "my" Beethoven pianists! Just compare
***** I see, it's just the way I heard and I'm used to play. I don't know why people get angry and say things like " what a modesty". I'm very humble when it comes to not knowing, I'm very aware of just how little I know in this world, it's something that defines me. Nevertheless, I prefer my way of playing that specific part...
Francisco Pinto Oh, I wasn't that angry you know, but your comment could tend to be misunderstood (like: "I play it better"), which wasn't apparently the case actually. Maybe I should have added a smiley :)
Yes, very dynamic and passionate. She can produce any piano pieces as exactly written. She has a very immense ability of retelling the story.
Rendering more than great justice to a really difficult but absolutely beautiful musical creation by Beethoven.
no doubt, imho she is the best living classic piano player. no exhibitionism, no frills. love her.

One of the best renditions ever!!
Your rendition of 'The Tempest' is my favorite. Well done.
Best one to play this sonata, so perfectly played.

Elegante e misurata nella forma. Toccante nell'interpretazione composta e senza sbavature
Maria, you are a miracle.
Finally! movement 3 played truly beautifully and not like a mechanical piece of crap :)
The pace - the key pressure - perfection, as always from Pires
Yes! The key pressure is perfection. I adore Pires ❤ Her rendition of Bach's English Suite No. 3 is astonishing to me. And her Mozart, and her Chopin.....
She is a wonder in live performance...this is beautiful playing here...
Excelente. Bravissima...!!!
her approach to the first movement is clearly announcing opus 57.. the same statement of despair. Stunning.
Quelle sensibilité ! J'adore...
That third movement...astounding.
Food for the soul! Brilliant!
Fantastico. Gracias a youtube conocemos estos magníficos intérpretes. Cada día un nuevo descubrimiento.
Suavidade de som! Magia de teclas!
Fantastic!! Love Beethoven and Maria João!
Absolutely wonderful!

I can't believe someone actually disliked this. The nerve.
Sorry, my little baby boy hit that button because I was playing it too loud and it interfered with his Justin Beeber concert....

There is no accounting for taste,..those who have none, are usually, also crass enough to tell you.
Me too

She plays like a goddess.
Right !!!

Wonderful
Remarkable interpretation.🤗👍
Well done! Just what I needed after a rather long day.
Excellent!
Excelente
I love this song.... It's just beautiful. She plays it impeccably. Bravo. My favorite is the way she plays the third movement.
AMAZING!!!!!!
magistral
ADORABLE!
Oh wow!!!!!
Bravo!

It makes me want to read The Tempest of Shakespeare.

I prefer my way of playing it xD
she's too slow for me in some parts where I want to feel the storm..
What a modesty...
***** Really?

Hm, maybe a bit too restrained - Ludmilla Beethoven, perhaps.
