“So it’s one idea - displayed multiple times, multiple ways”
Back due to popular demand, Pyramind’s Chief Academic Officer Matt Donner gives us another music theory breakdown. This time, he runs us through the songwriting & arranging techniques used in Zedd’s 2012 hit, “Spectrum”.
Before digging in, he wants you to keep this concept in mind - complexity equals simplicity. This concept was also the main theme in a video Matt did on Disclosure’s hit, “Latch”, which you can watch here: • Theory & Arrangement |...
In Spectrum, Zedd repeats a 10 chord progression - a relatively simple arrangement - with a surprise minor to major chord switch. This is where “complexity” comes in. Complex chord changes can really make a simple arrangement pop.
Matt dissects the chords, voicing, as well as the vocal melody. We have included helpful visuals of the progression and chord names so that you can build these chords yourself. This is a must watch for Zedd fans, and any music producer struggling with theory and arrangement techniques.

I was actually more amazed at how simple yet affective these chords are. It's fascinating how far you can take such a standard idea!

I think the complexity in Zedd's music is due to his musical background. He's a classically-trained musician. We all know (well not all) how classical musicians get really technical with their music.
Spectrum, in my opinion, is one of Zedd's most creative pieces.

I'll be honest. I love how professional the video is. It really breaks from the norm of most piano tutorials or theory tutorial videos on UA-cam. However, this is literally just 18.5 minutes of him explaining how one chord in the progression changes to its parallel major.

Thank you very much for taking the time to deconstruct that for us Matt! Extremely concise and to the point while adding in lots of additional music theory tips about which notes "like" each other etc. This video has done wonders for me bridging the gap between learning music theory and then elaborating that into full length songs that remain interesting. Cannot thank you enough!

As someone who has been playing instruments for 9 years (I started with the Trumpet when I was 8. I play the Trumpet, French Horn, Guitar, Double Horn, and Oboe) and is a producer, I completely agree with this. Music theory is incredibly important and the way that he explains it is both fluid, easily understood, and it presents it's self in a way that a person without a solid grasp of complicated theory can understand. And yes, Mathew Koma's voice is of the gods.

Simply BRILLIANT! Great video. The one on Disclosure as well. Really a great job. It makes you think a lot how arrangement makes or breaks a song. And yes... minor to major sometimes does the trick. In both songs those basslines DO make the difference. Thanks a lot.

Lol the hand over the face bit earned you a sub.
I’ve told people for years about the “zedd chord” where he does that modality change on the last chord of a section. After seeing this video, it’s the c major.
I know he’s not the first to do it, but he’s made that so uniquely his that any other dj or producer can’t really use it without at least making it obvious that they use him as an influence.
It’s like the inverse of a minor fall and I love it.

"It's an idea (referring to the beam of light) - it is shown several times, in multiple ways"( like the decomposition in the spectrum of colors)...? Do not judge me, it's just something that came out of nowhere xD
