“So it’s one idea - displayed multiple times, multiple ways”
Back due to popular demand, Pyramind’s Chief Academic Officer Matt Donner gives us another music theory breakdown. This time, he runs us through the songwriting & arranging techniques used in Zedd’s 2012 hit, “Spectrum”.
Before digging in, he wants you to keep this concept in mind - complexity equals simplicity. This concept was also the main theme in a video Matt did on Disclosure’s hit, “Latch”, which you can watch here: • Theory & Arrangement |...
In Spectrum, Zedd repeats a 10 chord progression - a relatively simple arrangement - with a surprise minor to major chord switch. This is where “complexity” comes in. Complex chord changes can really make a simple arrangement pop.
Matt dissects the chords, voicing, as well as the vocal melody. We have included helpful visuals of the progression and chord names so that you can build these chords yourself. This is a must watch for Zedd fans, and any music producer struggling with theory and arrangement techniques.

Jesus fuck those are some sweetass chords
Respect for Zedd just went up
But the original song really doesnt sound very good, it sounds infinitely better with this piano.
+CONDESCENT just listen to the acoustic version then
I was actually more amazed at how simple yet affective these chords are. It's fascinating how far you can take such a standard idea!
I think the complexity in Zedd's music is due to his musical background. He's a classically-trained musician. We all know (well not all) how classical musicians get really technical with their music.
Spectrum, in my opinion, is one of Zedd's most creative pieces.
That's true, he is amazing musician and muliti instrumentalist. Too bad it's bean weared in such ugly EDM form at the end.
Actually, J A Z Z
@@karolk6134 electronic music with classical background is some of the best music this world has to offer. Quit being so close minded
It is actually really surprising to hear someone speak of modal interchange on a youtube video, and it's a pleasure to actually see a real teacher speaking of "advanced" music theory !
thank you very much for being who you are ! cheers and love from france :)
I hope you're subscribed to Rick Beato lol
man you're such a great scholar
More of this please, great stuff
I could listen to you all day, man thank you so much!
First video I've seen, really cool so far, hope you do more of this kind of music theory analysis as I've never seen videos like this before and you do it really easy to understand, going straight to see your other videos, keep the nice work!
Thanks for doing another song breakdown Matt! This one was just as awesome. Please do more!
I'll be honest. I love how professional the video is. It really breaks from the norm of most piano tutorials or theory tutorial videos on UA-cam. However, this is literally just 18.5 minutes of him explaining how one chord in the progression changes to its parallel major.
Its amazing, cool style and sympathic character. I just got into production and you're explaining it very well
I'm not even an amateur producer but the pleasure of understanding such a complex yet beautiful song is absolutely amazing! Thank you
Hey Sumedha 👋🏻
Can I get your IG I'd?
I'm also a beginner producer from India.
Man... this practical approach was extremely helpful. I played along and had some real breakthroughs!
Dude thank you for these tutorials! They really rock.
You're good. Really good. Thanks for creating this after myself and others requested it. Looking forward to seeing you do more!
I hope you do more of these !!!
this is wicked helpful, I hope you make lots of these videos
This is seriously the kind of video i wanted to watch since i first listened to this song
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE
Thank you very much for taking the time to deconstruct that for us Matt! Extremely concise and to the point while adding in lots of additional music theory tips about which notes "like" each other etc. This video has done wonders for me bridging the gap between learning music theory and then elaborating that into full length songs that remain interesting. Cannot thank you enough!
Love these types of videos, thanks for sharing Matt
Matt, this is amazing! Thank you, been wanting to look under the hood on the theory side of things on these tunes!
Such a pleasure to know all the chords & progressions in a beautifully detailed manner...!!
Here is a subscriber of you..!
Dope, I love to see more of this. Subscribed!
Amazing explanation ! Thank you ! I think I'll be giving your course a go!
fantastic, Matt!! Thanks so much for your knowledge and insight!!
Great work! Thanks so much for following through on this from last time when you mentioned you'd do "Spectrum" if people wanted it. These videos are super informative and I really enjoy watching. Keep it up!
This is amazing! I've been looking for something this well explained forever! What an inspiration, I wish I could analyze chord progressions like you do!
Great stuff, you just got yourself a new sub! Keep it up! :)

One of my favorite songs of all time. Thanks for this. Great rundown of the song.
Great! Thank you. Please do more
I love these theory videos. Keep making them! They are great!
great work. i love watching these videos to base my reasearch on, regarding chord progression. it is like going to a school for composition but free and without admission. love it so much!
thanks for the vid! been looking for someone to break down the music theory of some of these songs for a while, glad to have found your channel :)
Thank you for taking the time to make a video like this. It's always a gem to find these types of tutorials that get into song structure and theory while showing how to actually apply them to your music. More like this would be GREATLY appreciated!
As someone who has been playing instruments for 9 years (I started with the Trumpet when I was 8. I play the Trumpet, French Horn, Guitar, Double Horn, and Oboe) and is a producer, I completely agree with this. Music theory is incredibly important and the way that he explains it is both fluid, easily understood, and it presents it's self in a way that a person without a solid grasp of complicated theory can understand. And yes, Mathew Koma's voice is of the gods.
great interpretation! Kudos
These breakdowns are great! Thanks!
I'm right in the middle of the video and i feel I've already learned so much. The explanation is really well done. Thank you a lot!
great video, cant wait to watch more
Please more of these videos, Thank you!
Wonderful. More like this please.
I love your videos really well put together. I have been studying the berklee program with my piano teacher so it is nice to see it used in context to dance music.
Wonderful video, you're a great teacher! Can't wait for more.
Great stuff Matt!
man I love these videos. you don't even break down some of my favorite songs, but your in depth analysis of theory and modes is fantastic to watch/listen to. as a music student, thank you for the time you spend on these!
Nice stuff. Very educational!
Fantastic video!
Simply BRILLIANT! Great video. The one on Disclosure as well. Really a great job. It makes you think a lot how arrangement makes or breaks a song. And yes... minor to major sometimes does the trick. In both songs those basslines DO make the difference. Thanks a lot.
good job. looking for more videos like this

good stuff, subbed
The beauty of the creative process
Lol the hand over the face bit earned you a sub.
I’ve told people for years about the “zedd chord” where he does that modality change on the last chord of a section. After seeing this video, it’s the c major.
I know he’s not the first to do it, but he’s made that so uniquely his that any other dj or producer can’t really use it without at least making it obvious that they use him as an influence.
It’s like the inverse of a minor fall and I love it.
This video is so informative
Funny yet educational, thumbs up!
I'm the only one who discovered a connection with Matt's conclusion about the song with the title of it? ... "It's an idea (referring to the beam of light) - it is shown several times, in multiple ways"( like the decomposition in the spectrum of colors)...? Do not judge me, it's just something that came out of nowhere xD
Shinigami Miguel wow. Makes sense!
I saw that too
Genius
Matt, you are pedagogical as fuck, thanks for this
great demonstration, thank you Matt
🤙
Great voice!
This video has been tremendously helpful, very much appreciated.
