  • In this video I'm stalking dragonflies and damselflies. I take to the water in a pair of waders on the lookout these fantastic insects to photograph.
    By getting into one of my local rivers I can use my 105 mm macro lens by being able to get closer to my subject.
    I also share many tips for macro photography.

    Hi Steve. I enjoyed that and nice photos too. Good tips and completely agree - I only get into water that I trust. Although I've never thought to do it for dragonflies, so I might give that a try one day.

      Thanks very much Scott. Yes getting into the river gave me so many options. Just had another go with new waders that don't leak. Had a very successful shoot. Cheers, Steve.

    I saw you downloaded this yesterday but I was waiting for a nice break in my day to sit and enjoy it.
    Can I just say that I am not a photographer and even though the technical information means little to me I still enjoy learning about your approach. I watch for the wildlife and your amazing photos. 👏

    All great tips Steve excellent video. For myself I think by the time I put the waders on I’ll be shattered and too tired to take any images. Love the dragonfly images at the end. Cheers Keith

      Thanks very much Keith, the main thing is to have waders that don't leak I found that out to my cost. I have to say it was brilliant to be able to get to those out of the way areas. All the best, Steve.

    8:27 Ruddy Darter? Looked like a female Banded Demoiselle

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  2 роки тому

      Hi yes you're absolutely right the image at 8.27 is a banded demoislle. The female ruddy darter is right at the end of the video. Sorry I didn't make that clear enough. All the best, Steve.

    Good Video Steve,
    Very informative and plenty of tips.
    Fascinating things dragonflies, especially when you consider how long they've been around...

    Great video Steve, will have to give the rocking back and forth a go ,great tips. As a Long term Fisherman go and get some Neoprene waders they last much longer and are warmer. I use lots of Fishing Equipment for Photography boots waders clothing adjustable chairs small brolly with camo throw over even a bivalve as a hide👍

      Thanks very much Laurence, Yep it takes a bit of practice but I find rocking backwards and forwards works really well for focusing. Good advice mate, I've got a pair of camo waders on order. All the best, Steve.

    Good video, tips and shots Steve. Glad that you managed to stay upright in the river. Time to get my 105mm out again and try it on the Z6 11.

      Thanks Steve, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah I was slightly worried the first time I went in. One slip and it's goodbye camera. It was so nice to be able to get that much closer to the damselflies it was worth the risk. Just waiting for new waders now. Good luck with your 105m on your Z6II,it works a treat. Cheers, Steve.

    Hi Steve love video. Please don't stumble in river. You don't want camera to break.

      Hi James, really glad you enjoyed it. No I will be super careful, camera equipment and water, not a great combination. Thanks for watching, all the best, Steve.

    I've tried that method with move to focus and the press when I see the correct focus. But as soon as I press the shutter, I've moved a tiny bit. So for me I just burst shoot while moving backwards. Because that way I get one in perfect focus 😊 but yeah, I activate 1:1 and then directly deactivate af so it stays in 1:1 😊

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  2 роки тому

      Hi Villiam, yes using burst mode is a good idea, glad it works for you. AF is fantastic these days but I still think it falls short at 1-1. All the best, Steve.

    • @bamsemh1

      @@SteveHedgesPhotography if I use af on my lens, it goes to standard focus, not 1:1 😬 so to use 1:1, I need to be on mf 😊 I don't have vaders though, so I just need to bring a towel and just jump in the water 😅

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  2 роки тому

      Hi Villiam, I wouldn't just jump in the water if I was you. Water and camera equipment are not a great combination. Take care and keep safe. All the best, Steve.

    Nice one Steve. Useful advice and tips as always. I would add that where possible it's good to go with a buddy when venturing into any kind of potentially risky environment. 🙂
