Awesome tips! Like the engine and control panel explanation, definately easier to keep things clean if you don't force the hands to both control the ball as well as put power into it! :) Let the body parts share the workload, so the hands don't get overwhelmed and unable to do what they do best. I guess using the body for the "power generation", also makes it easier for the attacker to read the setters body language and have an additional information source on where the set will probably end up!
Thank you for your pointers on what a ref is looking for when a set is being made. I am a AiA Offical and I read a players body and confidence when making a hand set. I can tell who has played Beach and who is a court setter by their body positions and hands. They argue my judgement sometimes. But I agree it’s how the player sells the set to me. I wish some coaches would teach these fundamentals to their players instead of arguing the call.

I love this and love the videos you guys put out! In these setting videos do you guys plan to break down the official rules of what constitutes a lift or double? I just hear so many conflicting things. I most often see people get away with “deep dishing” in tournaments. As long as the set doesn’t have spin then it’s “clean”. I would love if you could clarify some of that

Does the Refs opinion on hand setting vary widely? How about testing that? Show at least 5 top Refs [individually] the slow motion vid. of what seem like 3 perfect settings and ask each Ref which of the sets were legal and see if they all agree.
So for a hand setting do you want to have all your 10 fingers on the ball or how exactly do you want to grip the ball when you set because I tend to not get all 10 fingers on the ball

Do you guys have any insight on "official ball PSI" ratings on playing in tournaments vs playing with friends? Any time I've pumped a ball up to the 4.5 PSI (as seen on the ball, indoor or outdoor), everyone complains that the ball is too 'pumped or over-inflated' and they want something softer. But the agreed on ball is always WAY under inflated vs the 4.5 PSI recommended. I know officials will have the balls filled and tested prior to a tournament, and checked throughout. How do I get my friends on board with using official PSI inflated balls? Cheers!

Ah man I wish I had volleyball growing up. I’m 6’3” and my body type looks like them. I had soccer - my body isn’t built for soccer. Better late then never!
#4 is so key. I like to say, you do not set with your hands. People spend too much time focusing on trying to control the set with the their fingers and wrists. The job of the hands is to give the ball a solid pocket to sit in. Use your body's momentum and your shoulders to give the push. I'm no pro though... So just listen to this guy 😅
Rafał X. I love the questions dude. You’re really breaking it down. So think of your wrists as hinges for your hands (control panels) and depending on how high the ball is leading up to the ball contacting your hands dictates how soft or rigid your wrists are. Now your fingers are always in some sort of medium tension. Not to rigid but not to soft that the ball slips through. For example in Rain my hands and fingers have a little more tension so I don’t slip. But my pre loaded arms and body are able to absorb and regulate what I need to set clean.
Rafał X. Having soft hands to let the ball in then adjusting tension according to how much spin your taking off is the key. Hands and wrist become almost one in how you embrace each ball. The only time your fingers and wrist are stiff is to dig a hard driven ball overhand.
I have came to expect more a thorough break down from you guys (hopes gutted), I think teaching a rookie on video would help make a better b/c im sure this is 2nd nature to you guys
Is there any specific reason that hand setting on the beach is so much more rare than indoors? A lot of players seem to be a little cautious when hand setting. I'm a setter for an indoor team, but haven't really set on the beach, so I don't really understand why the transition is so different and intimidating for a lot of players.
Nick Tokar because of the wind, uneven surface of the sand and other elements it is harder to set the ball without spin. Indoors they let more spin happen as long as the hands are fast and taken from a high point. In beach there needs to be more preparation so you can use that time to achieve a better outcome. Most indoor setters have a hard time at first adjusting to those variables
True that! The beach rules ask for a type of handset that takes a bit more work for people to develop, so a lot of people end up not developing that.. unfortunately!
Yes. Beach hand setting rules are far more strict than Indoor. Watching some indoor games I notice that almost all those sets would be illegal on the beach.
.k. I’ve never been called for a lift competing on the world tour in 8 years. Sometimes seeing it in slow motion it looks very deep. Trust me on this though they are not lifts.
Weird, he's always taking the ball high and using one upward motion, I can't see any way you could call those lifts... although maybe it's because he was holding the ball so long?

You break the rules because beach volleyball has no SETTER. YOU CANNOT SET BALL IN GAMES It's different from indoor volleyball.

Generally accepted for years that AVP calls way tighter than the slop sets allowed on FIVB. Amazing hands Casey
