I think he should appear morally gray, at the least, but I want him to become the sleuth's confidant after he reveals a secret about her late father. So she trusts him, and thus disqualifies him from suspicion.

For the older sleuth and the police dynamic, there could be family ties. Ties could be close or distant but it makes the police character feels like it demands they show her or him respect even if he doesn’t necessarily believe or want to listen.
