I need to get a copy of this!
This is a really great cover
Honestly that graph in the beginning was SUPER helpful and I ended up making a more complicated version that's weirdly formatted and bad but makes sense to me. Thank you!! I just finished like most of my plotting in like an hour
I actually want to write a mystery featuring the sleuth's sidekick as my narrator. I'm not a detective so I really wouldn't know how to think like one. That's where my Watson type character comes in. LOL
this video was AMAZING! i’m thoroughly enjoying binging your content right now 🥰
I have to pause the video 3/4ths of the way trought, to stop and think. I re-watched a great show with GENIOUS twists yesterday (Thunderolt Fanatsy) mostly because my friend and I want to try and figure out the backstory of the main characters and what the twist of season 4 might be. One of the characters of the show is a magican (established in Season 1 Ep1, just a few scenes after we met him) and a shape-shifter (which is not revealed until half-way through season 2). This is the set-up for a huge twist in season 3, where the author of the show played with the viewres knowledge and assumptions (not only about the show, but about how the author handeled the plot twists in seasons 1 and 2 and how certain tropes are normally handeled) to a masterful decree. He even considers the fact that the audience is familiar with the magican's antics by now and double-crosses the viewers by making them assume, that he is aware of their assumptions about the magican maybe shapeshifting and therefore pulling a new trick by having him not using a disguise - which is the trap, because by that point the magican duoble-swapped and it's great and by far the best twist I've ever encountered in any form of storytelling (the funny thing is that this might even work in a book, probably even better). Right now I am deconsturcting the series a bit to use it in my own writing.
If you really enjoy perfect alibi plots, check out the British series JONATHAN CREEK. He is a specialist who creates and builts illusions for stage magicians, but he keeps getting roped into solving murders because his odd don't-believe-what-you-see way of thinking makes him able to get through these "impossible" crimes. Good video, by the way. I'm really enjoying your series. If I ever get one of these published, I'll need to remember to thank you.
I would read this book
I really want to write a paranormal cozy mystery. I also want a talking cat in it. I know it's more than likely been done to death but I want that smart ass talking cat. LOL
I chose a different kind of motive for the cozy I'm attempting. At the moment I'm trying to work on the murder itself and then work backwards. The motive for this crime has been in my head for years. Around two decades. LOL
just wanted to say - you are amazing! love this channel!
I like a slow buildup to a murder. In Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile" the first murder doesn't occur until the middle of the book.
I'm making a trilogy where the first book is cosmic horror and the second book is crime literary fiction. I'm using the 27 chapter and also Alexa Donne's beats but I have difficulties to bridge between the death of first book protagonist and the second book problems and their narrative. I'll try use your outlining method. Thank you❤❤❤
The fact that the apes spoke English should have been a spoiler for Heston.
Got a question. If there are six books with the same title you chose for your mystery, should you change your title?
I would give strong consideration to changing it, yes. This is in fact what I did, changing The Perfect Crime to The Tangled Web. Your main consideration is probably searchability, so for sure if any of those books are ranking highly, that’s a sign it will be hard for people to find your book when searching for your title.
I guessed the ending of Knives out 1. 😈😈
I have a pinpoint character introduction in a standalone mystery of mine. (It is how-dunnit or a why-dunnit as opposed to a who-dunnit; our protagonist/sleuth has an idea of who, and a hunch why but explaining the whole thing is tricky.) In the opening he risks his own safety to preserve justice; however, when the criminal begins to use deadly force, my protagonist freaks out. He is saved by someone else. By the climax, his values swap; and he nearly dies as a result of trying to protect a victim he doesn't even know.
Ooooh you just gave me a great idea for how to isolate my detective from an ally!
Ooh thank you for explaining this cycle so clearly! I'm working on a slow-burn at the moment (enemies to lovers) and this will help me lay out the steps in their development more deliberately and make sure they don't coast or spin their wheels overlong. Subscribed!
Not all criminals are men.
Sudden uncontrollable rage also happens.
To think that's the only cook who knows how to make that dish is just silly
Great analysis, Jane. While I enjoyed Glass Onion (it was my first post-pandemic movie) it doesn’t measure up to Knives Out. Your analysis helps me understand why I felt that way. Thank you for clarifying this and sharing it.
What I like about this tip, Jane, is it aligns with principals of Dwight Swains MRUs (Motivation-Reaction Units) that help to great a narrative drive. For instance “motivation” naturally falls out of the general and specific; “reaction” natural falls out of the personal.
My kid attends all my meetings ❤
See John Dickson Carr's classic THE THREE COFFINS, aka THE HOLLOW MAN.
A great example of comic perspective comes from the How To Train Your Dragon movies. Here is an example where our POV character officially introduces himself: "My name's Hiccup. Great name, I know. But, it's not the worst. Parents believe a hideous name will frighten off gnomes and trolls. Like our charming Viking demeanor wouldn't do that." Here is his closing thoughts on (I think) the second movie: "This is Berk. It snows nine months out of the year and hails the other three. Any vegetables that grow here are tough, and tasteless. The people that grow here are even more so." He is sort of an outsider even though he is technically part of this community. This lends a sarcastic flavor to his commentary because he is aware of humor and inconsistencies found in the shared blind spots of most everyone else.
Do Howcatchems translate better to screenplays than they do to novels???
No way you remember Remington Steele
Hi! I just came across your channel, and I’m really impressed by your videos. However, after reviewing them, it seems like they’re not reaching their full potential in terms of views and engagement. This could be due to some SEO problems like unoptimized tags, titles, or descriptions. I specialize in UA-cam SEO and can help you get more exposure by fixing these issues. I’d be happy to provide you with a free report detailing the improvements you can make. Let me know if you're interested, and we can get started!
I agree with you. I'm in the planning stages now. It's tons of fun to create character ideas and world building. Even in a small town setting there must be world building. The continuing job of creating my protagonist began with his name to his moving to this town and his family's history in that town. I've realized his ancestor's go way vack to the founding of that town. And that's just my protagonist's links. I haven't gotten to any of the other characters yet. LOL
In the "kid mystery" genre one of the best that I have come across is the Disney Channel animated series Fillmore!
This is so useful
Girl you need to watch " Attack on titan " RIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT NOOOOOOOOOWWWWW !!!! I never seen someone so enthousiast about the craft ! Go watch it NOW !
First useful plot twist video I’ve seen
03:46 I don't remember seeing this episode but in your synopsis I instantly thought the wife to be guilty. But that was probably your setup. You did not mention what is probably the two most famous versions of this idea--THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD by Agatha Christie and of course teh film THE USUAL SUSPECTS.
Love it. Twin dogs played into a clue from Knives Out as well.
Thank you. This little clip gave me the best confidence I’ve found yet and direction on how to put my words on a page.
(For context, my mom, who is a Sherlock Holmes fan and has OCD like Adrian Monk, LOVES the show Monk. She frequently rewatches a solid handful of episodes.) Another place-shifted murder from Monk was the one where he had to stay in the FBI cabin. The lady across the lake murdered her husband in the bathtub with a radio, but froze his body and then sent him out on the lake during a storm so it look like he got struck by lightning.
nicely done!
When writing a supernatural mystery, or one set in a fantasy world, is it important to have the fantasy elements involved in solving the crime? Would it feel disappointing if the investigative elements and clues and stuff are pretty much like they are in the real world?
Hehe
At the moment I'm planning out my characters for this rough copy of my story idea that I got from clothes I saw at Walmart!
This is so clever and intuitive! Very neat!
I'm actually trying to write a DnD murder mystery and this was really helpful! Thank you
