I agree. I keep experimenting. Here in northeastern New Jersey (near Manhattan), I overwinter with screened bottom boards. I experiment with leaving a small opening at the top with a small opening on the inner cover. I push the telescoping cover away from the inner over opening to give clearance. It serves as a covered opening to protect against the rain/snow.
I'm down in central Texas and successfully used open screen bottom boards for a few years...even though the crazy freeze we had they all pulled through. I believe they help in a multitude of ways. Thanks to your videos I tried screens and your insolated inner cover for year round benefits as to our heat and apparently our winters hah I appreciate your two cents...they add up.
You're cracking me up, JC, especially with the bib on your little sausage! As for the wintering configuration, here in N-east WY and S-east MT I use mostly screened bottoms but keep a piece of 1/2" Styrofoam inserted under the screen. I leave this and the 1 or 1.5" side insulation plus quilt box attic on year-round. It does make for more work/time to work the hives but seems worthwhile.
Hi Jason, Glad Ladybug likes the Honey! Our dogs also love it! One has a cough that he has had all his life , it seems to help with calming it and all three look forward to share the bounty a couple times a week.
Great suggestions Jason. Here is what I am going to do. With my FlowHive2s, I'm going to flip the pest tray on the bottom which will make it a solid bottom board. Then I am going to wrap the hive with a thin black wrap blocking up the bottom entrance entirely----and then have a 1/2" top entrance. This way, they have one entrance on top that won't ever be blocked. We will see won't we. Oh, I am always adding a 2" hardy candy sugar board.
I'm going to try several different ways to over winter my bee's i know we don't have bad winter weather here in north alabama but every couple years apart. Great looking dog and I have the same problem with my inside dog not enough outside time . Been a bad year here rain every other day. ❤👍🐝🐕
Awesome! I think you will learn a great deal by experimenting even if you don't have super cold winters. Thanks, we love Ladybug. Such a great loving dog!
So glad to hear the screened bottom boards work in central Ohio. I'm in northern middle Tennessee and was worried about using them until hearing your experience with them. Ladybug is awesome. Cool how she waits to see if you're serious about going in the house. Lol. Work smarter not harder!
Hi Jason, Ladybug 🐞 sure enjoyed that honey!! 😋 Speaking of screened bottom boards, I've only had bees for 2 years. My one and only hive last year didn't make it through the winter. So I started over this year and I have 4 hives that all seem to be doing good. I have screened bottom boards that come with the mite board. I thought the mite board was to stay in all the time, but from listening to you talk about screened boards, I think I have been doing it wrong. If I am understanding correctly, I should only put the mite board in when treating so I can count the mites afterward. Otherwise don't have the mite boards in? Thanks for another great video💖
Hello Jason , I think ladybug liked the honey but was not 100 persent sure about it. Talking about the screw bottom boards . I am in NC an I am just starting back out with Bee’s again this year . I have screen bottom an also a screen top inter cover . My go to man told me to go thru winter with my insert in the screen bottom an use the screen top inter cover . We have some cold weather here but I know it is not as bad as a lot of places. I will see how it goes . Was going to tell you I saw a picture today of a really really nice looking new hat
Ladybug had the focused look, saying Oh Dad that is yummy. For this Winter, I'm going to go with what has worked for me, a Vivaldi Board on top and Insulation around. For 1 Hive though I'm going to not wrap it and check the Temps/Humidity to see what happens.
@Castle Hives Yes, I noticed the concentration on Ladybug's face. lol She was surely into the taste test. I am anxious to see how your setup does for you and to see how your sensors work for you. Best of luck!!
Thanks. I know not much on beekeeping but not every single video I produce will be beekeeping only. Sometimes we need to take a little break from bees then the following week we will go back on topic. Hope you understand?
Your suggestion would make the wife extremely happy. lol She's wanted to get another dog since we got Ladybug but I have stopped it. Maybe I do need to consider it. 😉
@@JCsBees I dont get a choice as I pour it out or any spillages she is there doing clean up, LadyBug is a beautiful dog I walk mine 10 miles a day split over 3 or 4 walks but being in rainy England she doesn,t like it too much at the moment LOL roll on summer
@Kebab6597 That I understand completely. Why don't they make measuring cups that don't pour very well without making a mess, I just don't understand. lol I am considering getting a hand pump to transfer my syrup from the bucket to the feeders that way I am not making messes and causing robbing. I seen Amazon sells a few different styles. Thanks for a the kind words about Ladybug, we totally agree. Ten miles a day is a lot but that is great you can do that, even in the rain. lol I took Ladybug to our lease beef farm the other day and the smells had her exploring all over the place. She stayed in eye sight which was great too. I may have to start taking her more. Also considering getting her a buddy to play with to burn some fat. lol
Jason, New to your channel the last couple months. I watch every week. I notice you have a lot of Nuc boxes - Why Nuc boxes instead of moving all of those bees to 8 or 10 frame boxes? Yes, I'm a 1st year Beek.
Thanks for watching the last couple months, much appreciated! The reason for all the nucs is I sell them come spring the rebuild each year. For this reason, I just leave them in the nucs and if needed add another box. This is how my bees pay their rent, I don't sell honey. I found I can manage about 30 nucs and still have time to run our cattle operation, as where selling honey took too much of my time when you count harvesting. I should do a video series on this topic, I guess. lol
@@JCsBees Good video to do - Different approach to what most of us think what bee keeping is. Got to pay the rent, more than my girls did this year - a whole 2.4 oz of honey. lol
Jason, hopefully Ladybug won’t get a sweet tooth while outside and do a little harvesting on her own. I knew way before this video that you are definitely crazy about her and I totally understand, she’s a fine looking pet!
If Ladybug learns to harvest her own honey, I'm gonna have a serious problem. lol And you are right, I am crazy about her, she brings so much joy into each day. Thanks for watching!
Ladybug knows when you are talking about her. She may not understand every word, but she understands your tone of voice, pride in her and your love. About the weight - have you considered getting her a companion?
Thanks for the kind words. We are considering getting her a buddy but that is a big step. It takes double of everything to care for 2 dogs and I don't want to take away from Ladybug. It's a tricky decision for sure.
I hate to laugh but everytime I hear "fat sausage" I can't help it. 😂 I am being told to get Ladybug a companion (another dog/pup) from a lot of follower but from the sounds of your comment having more than 1 is no help to causing them to exercise, is that correct? How far would you guess you walk your dog in a days time?
Clearly keepers need to discover for themselves what works best for them. Don't argue that someone is wrong if you haven't tried it. There are so many ways to winter a hive. Just because someone told you to never do something doesn't make it right. Trust but verify!
People put half the effort in mite control all year as they do piling on all this sugar wood chips all this packaging I'd be making more honey selling less bees. Lady bug needs dog friend to chase around maybe .. I have problem keeping weight on my Llewellyn Setter she's lean mean chicken pointing pheasant finding machine. She runs in hides around bees thou . Even if I get stung she can smell the pheromone sneaks away. She down wind 50' smells that pheromones she's gone. Spends most the day on point like always know where the chickens are dogs pointing at them. Dog spends hours pointing chicken likes it or something . Never grabs chicken just points
We are considering getting a friend for Ladybug. I just hope that the right idea, I don't want to take from her. What kind of dog food do you feed your dog? Have you considered switching to help it gain weight? Glad to hear it knows to avoid bees. Our last dog would eat them, it didn't matter how swollen his face got he never learned not to eat them. lol
@@hootervillehoneybees8664 I thought about letting Ladybug try Victor but she really like the Taste Of The Wild she's on now. Before that she was on Diamond but I had to beg her to eat it so I switched.
@@JCsBeesmy lab does good on that cheap Purina dog Chow anything else gives him the runs. They rather eat each others food. Something different. I could switch I'm sure she like that. Victor makes nice turd easy to clean up
@@hootervillehoneybees8664 We used to feed our old dog Ol' Roy's dog food. It cheap Wal-Mart food. If kept the dogs happy but after they died I realized if I fed them better they could still be here.
