Just back from Venice and I can endorse all this excellent advice. There were no wretched cruise ships but plenty of people. It is still possible to wander off and avoid the crowds in the back streets - you may get lost but it's fun. And we just took the ordinary water taxi to Burano - all included in a three day water bus pass, ate well, drifted around, paid a visit to Murano late in the day, and enjoyed the ride back.
How long was the boat ride to Murano and were there boats coming and going quite often? I won’t have very much time but would love to get over there even for a few minutes!!
Advice from my Italian father: Get ready to see a lot of laundry and bring your own toilet paper. My advice? Do not miss the elevator ride to the top of the bell tower at St. Giorgio Maggiore. Enjoy the most unique city in the world - before it's gone or too expensive for the likes of you.
Treviso is a great spot near Venice with airport as well. You can find a great apartment like "palazzina trevigiana" or "chiarano home" near the train station and then go by to Venice easily because are only 25 minute of train. Treviso is a super cool city as well, so I think is the best way to visit 2 great city in one trip 🎉

My family and I will be doing a day trip here during our stay in Florence. Aside from wandering around and enjoying Venice, we'd also love to visit Burano and maybe Murano as well.
