  • Episode 89. Psychedelics
No, you’re not hallucinating! In episode 89 of Overthink, Ellie and David investigate the loopy world of psychedelics. Did you know that after doing psychedelics Jean-Paul Sartre went through a “lobster phase” during which he hallucinated lobsters everywhere he went? Once paraded as mind-opening gateways to the nature of reality, psychedelics are back in the conversation today as tools of therapy and neuroscience. Your hosts take a crack at the philosophy of these puzzling substances, from their implications for phenomenology and the nature of consciousness, to the ethics of their medicinal use, in light of their risks and long-lasting effects. If a trip can transform our mind and senses, it might be that our everyday perception really is far weirder than we think.
Overthink is a philosophy podcast hosted by your favorite new professors, Ellie Anderson (Pomona College) and David Peña-Guzmán (San Francisco State University). Check out our episodes for deep dives into concepts such as existential anxiety, empathy, and gaslighting.

There is an interesting addition to the action of the DMN, which is being discussed around 20+ mins. People who have many hours of mediation practise also have much reduced DMN activity. However, internally, this leads to anything but a more chaotic, disorganized state. So, whereas both psychedelics and meditation both reduce DMN activity (and possibly our sense of self), the connection between this reduced activity and 'insight', may not be as clear cut as it appears.

I think you guys should try psychedelics sometime, it'll answer some of your questions but like gaining any new perspectives, it'll invoke new questions.
Also, poor Sartre. Once you open up your mind it's difficult to unsee what you experience.

Idk really really really random thoughts
I usually have this. For some reason condescending and obviously wrong attitude towards people who, after having a bad trip assume that the psychodelic drugs are just. Somehow fundamentally not for them because they induce anxiety. And I. For some reason can't understand that like. Even if I have a bad trip afterwards it is a positive experience because it is unique and there are so many things that happened it is as if. You become that body without organs and let reality flow through you. It is not like. Seeing more. It is more similar to letting go of all these machines that constrict the flow of things. It feels sometimes like structured mind is something to overcome, like there is that moment when you are tripping and you are wrestling for control and you suddenly reach a point when you realise you don't exist and some people panic, at least I panicked many times but then there were things even past that, like. At that point panic usually changes in me towards the state nonexistence and. It is only possible for me to go past that and not have the bad trip by relenquishing the control. And I feel that. It is. for some very weird and unethical reason. uncomfortable for me when I am with people who can't let go and just. Stop fighting and I have this internal tension when I see people with that extreme. Tension that probably comes for constantly wrestling for control during the trip. And I am not really sure why I feel that way. I don't think it's so simple as some xd deleuzian will of universe to deterritorialize I guess I am more like. I am scared of people who cling onto things. Because it always feels in some way reactionary, being unable to let go of everything and let things flow. And it's not even thinking in some Nietzschean fashion that these people are weak it is as if there are. Like I visualise these square boxes with sharp edges blocking some infinite flow of potential there xd and it is withholding a some sort of release like in these stupid instant satisfaction videos.
Anyway yeah xd i think it's one of worst traits i think I have

Interesting. Brings me back to my mid-seventies experience with psychedelics.
I can identify with some of the neuropsychological findings. I also have experienced clinically controlled existential psychedelics. Clinical control as science goes was different from the more natural taking of mescaline and LSD. ( more free )
One certainly can, through the eyes of one on psychedelics in the 60 and 70 talk “philosophically on things “freeing up the mind ( no ego) rather than that of academic philosophy
. I, from experience, get it, but certainly not a new real world as reality. I don't endorse or recommend it othervthsn an “ experience “ as in Jimmy Hendrix's experience “
I don't agree with scientific usage of it and its commune “
Many religious symbols such as mandalas are similar to cells under the microscope ( as noted by Francis Collins) is also much like the images experienced by one on psychedelics.
A friend an anorexia friend was clinically treated with psych drugs... Again l don't agree with controlled medical experiments.. Philosophically speaking it turned me against existential philosophy/ psychology.
Much prefer nature and philosophy that comes from a natural mind. Critical Thinking through a healthy mind is much more beneficial!

I don't know how anyone could have a bad trip on mescaline. Maybe he did too much? I was so happy, i couldn't believe it!
    Such a positive compound.
Y'know, people say a lot of things about psychedelics, but there is such a thing as a basic, fun experience.
    Nothing complicated but still profound.
in fact, the best way to gauge your involvement with the idea is just to start out with small doses. There's no goals or expectations that way, and you can eliminate many of the other risks. It's not a miracle or an explanation of reality. There's a persistent awareness during the trip that is very grounded and people don't mention that. It literally tells you not to blow it out of proportion.

Psychedelic shrooms trips can be truly life-changing. It's amazing how they can bring about positive transformations and have a profound impact on our lives.
