My survival story -- what I learned from having cancer | Martin Inderbitzin | TEDxZurich

  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Martin Inderbitzin was 32 years old, with a fresh PhD degree, a new job and about to start a new life when he was suddenly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
He had to go through surgery and endure nine months of radiochemotherapy. While coping with his new situation and challenging his many fears he realized how important his own state of mind was. In the middle of his treatment, when he was barely able to walk, he decided to sign up for a triathlon, despite never having seriously practiced endurance sports before. Today, he says this was one of the most important decisions of his life.
With this new goal in mind he quickly realized the positive effect it had on his mental and physiological state. He tried to figure out how to‚train‘, while still being under treatment. After he had left the hospital his energy slowly returned and his training became more serious. Three months after the end of his treatment, Martin crossed the finish line of his first triathlon. Today, Martin is an enthusiastic Amateur-Triathlete, competing regularly in races around the globe.
During his time as a patient Martin was inspired by stories from other patients who had lived through the same hassle. While crossing the finish line of his first race he realized that he himself had become an inspiration for other patients. This life changing moment gave Martin the idea to start his initiative: to collect and document cancer survival stories in the form of short videos and make them available to other patients and their families on an online platform.
Martin Inderbitzin studied biology at the ETH Zurich and did his PhD in Neuroscience at UPF Barcelona with a special focus on artificial emotions and human computer interaction. After his studies in Spain he moved back to his home town Zurich and started to work as an interaction designer. In 2012 his dreams of a successful career were destroyed by a cancer diagnosis. While in treatment he decided to become a triathlete despite never having practiced this sport before. Since he left the hospital in 2013 he has completed multiple races and is enjoying his health again.

Hello everybody! It's me again. :) so you guessed right...I am still here! And I feel so humble and grateful to read all your comments and feedbacks. Isn't it amazing that we can share our stories and empower each other this way? My last 8 years were not straight forward and I have many ups and downs. Many treatments and surgeries, but I am still here. What I learned is that life is short. Don't wait. Go out and follow your heart. Dare to Live! before it's too late. What did you learn? I am curious to hear. With nothing but love and my best wishes, Martin

Sam D I got curious, so I did look it up in a medical database. Turns out it wasn't in it. Naturally, I got even more curious and looked into it some more. Turns out Vidatox is water. And all the studies they list on their page are references to the UNDILUTED venom. Whereas Vidatox is homeopatic and thus, just water.

He didn't want to hear the life expectancy, but it was a year at most. AND HE IS STILL HERE. Thanks to immunotherapy he's still living ,so please never give up hope. best wishes to all going through cancer.

Praise God for his endurance. There is something called GcMAF that I want to do (need funds) that can be made at home, a pro biotic that feeds the immune system. Maybe that will be of help. Also something called Vidatox; I just heard of it the other day and am reading up on it. Available on line.

Great story! I was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer stage 4 last year. I tried to fight with cancer by kept working even during chemo time. I tried to let my work speaking without telling others about my diagnosis except my supervisor, but the company still lay me off. The stress of lost job let me feel my symptoms back. I am trying to be strong and jump back the job market. I enjoyed working and concentration of working let me feel alive. By the way, I am 62 years old and I am a software engineer. We just lost to cancer, a 19-year-old young lady. She was the oldest sibling and would help her mom with the rest of the children. She died praying without ever stopping. She was angelic in so many ways. I remember her when she was still a baby. I'm still praying for her eternal rest and for her family. The community is still overwhelmed because she was so young and kind. But there is a sense of conformity with the fact of her death because she was suffering a whole lot, and all the money in the world wouldn't suffice to get better treatments than the ones she got. She was such an angel! I'm so happy that I met her!

Previously in 1976 my child was diagnosed with an incurable, inoperable brain disease called hyppsarrythmia and that he had 4weeks to 4 years to live. Doctor advised me to put my son aside and get on with my life. My son is 47 next month. He is very smart man works with computers, plays many musical instruments and has artistic talents. I am very strong in my attitude and very positive that my son would survive. When I was told of my cancer I was able to console my doctor who is my friend that everything would be OK however it turns out as I am not afraid of death.

I agree. I believe more people die from the "fear" of tne cancer versus the cancer itself. Cancer often follows a period of great stress. The fear itself causes even more. When you let your head follow that fear, your body will follow, so don't let your head go there in the first place.

My father was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer and beat it a few years ago just to find out he had progressive prostate cancer. January 2020 he was told he had a 0.0 PSA and was cleared from stage IV cancer. A couple of months ago he had a sharp pain in his back where he thought was his kidney. He still has a big CYST in his nonfunctioning kidney & thought that was maybe it. He & I and all our family were praying it wasn’t. It turned out it wasn’t that, but they found that the Cancer from his Prostate had spread to the liver & the stomach. I am so sad and hurting. I pray for him everyday, if anyone who is reading this can keep him in your prayers his name is Rafael. At the very least, at least I got this off my chest. I’m trying to find anything I can to help cure him.

My sister has been diagnosed with 4th stage lung cancer a month ago, and doc said she has 5-6 moth to live.
What you said make sense, information from internet about this kind of survival rate is not good but I do agree with you that those statistics do not define her survival rate.
I will visit her tomorrow and will encourage her to think how she wants to live her life. One thing for sure, she has been a very committed Christian and have been living her life caring and helping the needy.

My cousin Ian Evans was a huge success story. I remember him playing his bass guitar in his bedroom all the time while everyone else was out partying. He worked so hard throughout his life and long story short he ended up playing for Lynard Skynard under the name Mississippi Kid. He was shinning like a star and so happy. All of his life's hard work had paid off. Then, not long after being hired by the band, he began to have stomach pains.
Two months later he was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer. Two months later he was gone. He was 49 years old.

I don't have a diagnosis yet, but I've had some weird symptoms and I'm seeing the doc tomorrow. I've spent countless hours researching symptoms and differential diagnosis, and you're right about the doom and gloom on the internet. Cancer shares symptoms with so many other things, but I always think the worst. It's very frightening, but worrying about it isn't going to make it better. I do think I want to start training for a half marathon again. I think it is important to have goals and something worth fighting for, and it's possible your exercise starved some cancer cells. Either way, you are very inspirational. I wish you continued good health.

my mother recently diagnosed with Aggressive Breast cancer. The news brought great fear. Words cannot express . I was in great shock and cried out. I wanted an explanation for this. The fear for my mom and also fear that it is now family history. But I remembered that the word of God in Isaiah 53:4-5 surely He borne our griefs and carried our sorrows yet we esteemed Him stricken. Smitten by God and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him. And by His Stripes we are healed. This is the word of God that never fails. My mom is healed by His stripes. In this journey Lord I know that I am not alone. To all cancer patients and caregivers Christ borne our sorrows and griefs. our loved ones are healed by His stripes. We have received justification by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. I join many who will read this that we have access by faith into God's grace and we can rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we also glory in tribulations knowing that tribulations produces perseverance and perseverance character and character hope. Now hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us . For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. The life of Christ saves us from sin and death eternal. how much more , The life of Christ has healed you this morning from all diseases and afflictions from Cancer in Jesus name. Amen.

The man who betrayed me badly long time ago is suffering from cancer now.
At first, I thought the god punished him as a revenge, but now I don’t resent him at all, because I learned a lot from this TED video.
Anyone who fights against the cancer has a fear and doesn’t want to be a weak person when the cancer beats him/her.
Also, the lesson is “How do you want to live? “…It doesn’t mean how long you want to live…
The attitude toward the life means a lot.

Hi, I was diagnosed with an aggressive none-hodgekinson follicular lymphoma stage IV. That was almost 6 years ago. I went through three years of chemo. Never was I ill, didn't lose my hair, had my strength and stamina as well. I'm not bragging but I was fortunate to have very good physiology. Never once did I investigate it on the internet until recently, never went to any support groups either. What I did to survive was put it completely out of my mind. I kept busy in life, and I've never looked back. I had a total of 5 bags of blood, which was two transfusions in total. I was near dead when I was suddenly diagnosed after having problems within three weeks. In 20 years I have never even had a common cold, except one respiratory infection this August 2019 which lasted 3 weeks. I don't pay attention to diet either. My only advice would be to put the thought of cancer completely out of your mind. There's no place for it.
