It's funny how everybody who knows you thought of you when this story broke. If I was on social media, I prolly woulda hit you up too!😂 Like you, I didn't take her comments as political, just ignorant. I wouldn't call myself a super fan, but I do think a *little* grace is warranted. However, I would have more respect for her if she simply said she was misinformed. Because, in stature, she definitely dropped from a dignified icon to that uninformed Aunty that just be saying anything.😅 I will say, unlike you, it wouldn't surprise me if she had some antiblack sentiments, but that's just a feeling and not based in fact.

    Long answer here:
I feel Black Americans making Harris’ lineage a larger topic is because she did it to herself. Pre her presidential run, when she ran for VP in 2019, she sat down with The Grio and was asked, “Do you support reparations for Black people?”
Before simply saying, “NO”, she gave a very colorful response to it. She mentioned the LIFT ACT and so many other things before giving her definite answer, which was basically, “No, now stop asking.”
She ran around the track field 16 times and went to the grocery store came back, took a nap and then woke up and finally said, “So I’m not gonna sit here and say I’m gonna do something that’s only gonna benefit Black people. No. Because whatever benefits that Black family will benefit that community and society as a whole and the country, right?”
Same with Obama. 2008 he said, “I have said in the past - and I’ll repeat again - that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed,” the Illinois Democrat said recently.”
Obama says an apology would be appropriate but not particularly helpful in improving the lives of black Americans. Reparations could also be a distraction, he said.
In a 2004 questionnaire, he told the NAACP, “I fear that reparations would be an excuse for some to say, ‘We’ve paid our debt,’ and to avoid the much harder work.”
They are both non Black Americans that share the same sentiments on a very specific BA issues.
That is what many are referring back to as Harris’ identity has come into play and that was an identity of her relationship to Blackness for many and why it’s questioned. We know Trump is doing it for reasons to muddy her campaign run and for his personal bigot ways but this question also is not without merit. And that interview and her response years ago raised our eyebrows then and is like, “ah okay it all makes sense. Is she really Black?” It’s indicative.
Obama did the same. They start identifying with who they are and that’s not Black American. Their answers to what will you do for BAs gets so multiracially and biracially answered because that’s who they are.
5 years ago, we were cool with Harris not saying yeah to reparations but we didn’t forget. We side eyed her for it but put it off to the side and now and she’s suddenly more identified as Black American, this same answer she gave is making the identity question seem very legitimate.
Pre-2024, she’s gone on and based her identity off of her Indian Pacific ethnicity. Which is fine. There was little to no mention of her Jamaican side as the forerunner as much as it is today. And again, her father’s race is Jamaican while her mother’s race is white. And we know nationality does not mean race.
Only until now, has she done the flip of “I’m Black” with some of her ridiculous statements about collard greens in the bathtub etc. which is leading many BAs to feel duped once again with a “colored” candidate.
She should just run off of on her identify and lineage as she did before. The fakery and switch up wouldn’t settle with BAs if she had simply stuck to it.
It matters who everyone identifies as. Because you make decisions based off that. So when we see her signing off on policies and benefits that specifically aid her lineage of Indian and Jamaican people and not BAs, we can’t be upset about it.
Multiracial and biracial people are safe people for America. We experienced this with Obama and now we will with Harris. It’s worth realizing that each of any Presidents or those running who have gotten this far have not been Black American indigenous either.

      In 2019:
In an MSNBC Al Sharpton interview during Harris' first presidential run, he asked Harris, "In the area of reparations for descendants of Africans enslaved, if you’re elected president, would you sign that bill if it came across your desk?"
"When I am elected president, I will sign that bill," Harris responded.
In 2019: The Grio asked, “Do you support reparations for Black people?”
Harris said, “…So I’m not gonna sit here and say I’m gonna do something that’s only gonna benefit Black people. No. Because whatever benefits that Black family will benefit that community and society as a whole and the country, right?”
Obama 2021: Former President Obama said earlier this week that the case for reparations for Black Americans is “justified,” but he added that the “politics of white resistance and resentment,” among other issues, made the prospect of pursuing the issue during his presidency a “non-starter.”
But just during his entire 2 terms, the man opposed it. Now, post his presidential seat and years after, reparations are “justified”. What good does this post/after the fact do for us as BAS? Being scared and timid in office but bold out of office.
I don’t want to hear a thing from BAS bemoaning she didn’t do anything for us if she gets elected and spends 4 years or more in office. You keep letting these people flip flop on their BLACK AMERICAN issues and allow candidates to identify with you for a vote only and nothing in return.

Calvin, I kind of disagree on your take on reparations(or other progressive topics) and placing candidates into certain positions. A lot of the latter is influenced by big money in politics. And entities that get big money/influenced by corporations tend to have milquetoast liberal or conservative leaning politics regardless of party. There is plenty of research to suggest that they aren't particularly responsive to standard constituents and are even less responsive to black constituents. As a poor group, it is extremely difficult to influence candidate selection beyond the local level (even then sometimes). Second of all, we seem to be a group that IS large enough to have an impact in a lot of important elections, BUT are never willing to leverage our votes in elections(I mean we could at least trick pollsters into believing we are in play as a way to increase the chance that whatever Dem politician responds to our demands). "Blue no matter who"/"Keep the crazy outta office" politics is very unlikely to yield candidates that are more progressive as we'll just vote for anything that is not GOP.
At the national level (and even state level), It ends up being this never ending cycle where the Dems point out that the GOP candidate is some boogie man, and we just coalesque around and vote for some pragmatic candidate that is bought and paid for due to fear. At some point we have to be willing to try something else whether at the level of the primary or the general election. The does not mean vote GOP, but it does mean we need find some way to indicate that our vote matters and is in play versus presenting our vote as captured/guaranteed to whatever blue candidate gets propped up by the establishment and monied interests. This tends to lead to the Dem candidates feeling comfortable running further to the right and away from more progressive policies that suit or needs because they know they have our vote in the bag.
There is also the cautionary tale of an AOC who went in as a progressive firebrand, but then tacks further to the center over time as she decides to cave to or work with establishment figures. How do you handle that outside of just giving her the vote again? We would have to be open to primarying such a candidate with someone more progressive which is no easy task even if the candidate is groomed over several years (the establishment Dems may put their endorsement and money behind the incumbent OR a new more conservative candidate). Either way, I guess my longwinded point, is that candidate grooming cannot be some substitute for leveraging votes or making demands towards the chosen candidate at the time they need our support. We need to do both as much possible. "Shut up during election season" as a strategy is just wholesale insufficient and sets us up to fail even under Democratic leadership. If they can't survive being pressured to meet certain demands, then they shouldn't be there. We should expect their policy platform to at least have something that demonstrates a compelling vision for the country, including for its marginalized groups. Can't keep lowering the bar for them because their opponent is awful too.
As for the Kamala "race" conversation, I feel as if too many black folks (ADOS and non) are trying to make her Black American as if that is supposed to be the main reason we vote for her. They are hoping to tap into or even shame some people into some sort of blind loyalty where our vote is just given to her in high numbers like we did Obama. Her blackness shouldn't be relevant at all versus what her policies can and cannot do for black people. It just doesn't make any sense. People who get upset when someone doesn't recognize her as "black" seem to be upset because they expect that to be the sole reason any black person should vote for her. It's this disingenuous weaponization of identity/representation politics that is frustrating. I think that even merely voting for her as some anti-Trump vote makes more sense than voting for her because she is "black" and I am generally against fear based voting at this point.

Having dual-heritage children (indian and Carribbean) from my 26 year old marriage, it's interesting and disappointing listening to the comments about Kamala Harris not being black. Some of the opinions tend to devalue non- African American history because they see it as being less than a brutal experience. Granted, post slavery there wasn't shear cropping, red-lining, etc, but I feel that before they comment, they need to do more research on the brutality of Caribbean slavery. Tge main diffetence being thatvthere were NO checkscand balanced in the Caribbean. A start would be looking at the Dairy of Thomas Entwhistle and the Derby Dose.
