The power of water is almost incomprehensible. What at first looks like an overflowing bath tub (the water looks so still behind the barrier) turns into a raging torrent that overwhelms everything. Unbelievable power.

I wouldn't like to be in that bathtub 😕

notice the guy running at 0:58!
This is probably one of the most spectacular videos of the tsunami. The concrete building on the right-side of the sea wall at around 1:00 really gives a good reference point to how high the waves get. Judging by the sea wall, and the height of the second storey, the wave looks to be about 9 metres.

what's important is that little two story house practically in front of the wall,we keep seeing the house throughout the video without realizing the signaficance of it...two women will actually survive the tsunami in that house, even though its almost completely underwater,a younger woman with her elderly mother with kidney disease who had just returned home from her dialysis treatment, she wasn't up to making the evacuation to higher ground,so they moved up to the 2nd floor, but realized they weren't safe there so got onto the roof, even they weren't safe, there's was a small secondary roof which the daughter tried to climb dragging her mother by her down jacket, even though the woman was underwater, there she hung on with her mother and they both survived, that's a miracle.

1234lavallee1 but see that in itself is the problem. She didn't feel upto evacuating so she dam near died. I bet she feel upto evacuating next time. The warning is there for a reason. So many lives could have saved had they just listened. Unlike when a disaster comes and you get no warning. The people of Katrina did the same thing. They felt as the warning was actually a waste of energy. One woman even said she felt the warnings were an inconvenience. I saw a Japanese woman say that to. I don't care if I have 20 warnings and none of them turn out to be needed that 21st warning could be the one that saves your life. If nothing else, that's what these disasters have taught me. I'm happy the woman and her mom were saved but dam people, listen. Those warnings are there for YOU.

But in actuality most of the town did listen and I believe a thousand died or missing. Thats not a high number compared to other disasters.

Terrifying. I can't even imagine going through this. Makes me realize how much I take for granted. Good luck to everyone in Japan. I love you all and am thinking about you. I wish there was more I could do.

To people wondering if that's a person, above the car, at 3:50, it's not. It's just something waving in the wind.
It does look like someone running at 1:00 though...

@snowaydude The alarm gave the people of Kamaishi about 12 minutes to evacuate before the waves struck.

My heart bleeds for the whales, dolphins they massacre and the shark Fins they cut off and throw the shark back in the ocean. Probably the ocean taking revenge. Shouldn't mess with mother nature.

Time to build an elevated community with 50 foot support beams and move a bit more inland with more elevated helicopter landing pads and while you're at it, perhaps a monorail line. Good luck to these village natives.
