Thank you Jerry! That's so kind of you to say! She really is starting to look so good, we're working hard but luckily also having lots of fun with it! Thank you for your lovely feedback, it means a lot!

Ifka, I've long admired your editing skills, and today's episode has a delightful sequence where you have laid a light jazz piano over video of you muscling the torture board across the hull. A light and lovely bit of irony. Well done. And with the white and rub rail together, the picture starts to come into focus. Another great video. Thanks.

your background music is almost classical and i love it.

Thank you John, I really appreciate your comment, the selection of the music is always hard, to predict if people will find it pleasing but we usually go for songs that we love and suit the situation. I'm really glad you like our choices. I personally love the music we use and I'm happy you do too 😊

I second that! Your background music is by far and away the best and least obtrusive of all the boat building channels I watch

Agree with music comments. Lovely soundtrack in many episodes. It sets your channel apart. A list would be great.

Oh, the memories! And I was just fanching around with a 12’ skiff! I found that an unthickened epoxy paint (Lou Sauzedde recommended one from TotalBoat) worked great to create a “crust” through which I could sand through, almost as a marker coat, before I started the fairing/painting/fairing loop. My issue was knowing when to stop. And the good news was that the new roller-applied topcoat paints are really fantastic and very forgiving. Beautiful video, by the way. And the drama with the first strip of twill was fantastic. All the best from Texas!

Guys I had a wry smile whilst the torture board was in use, the name is so apt. She is coming along splendidly and I'm looking forward to see her with the first full coat of final primer. She is a good looking girl, when completed I'm positive she's going to turn many heads wherever she goes

Happy New Year! and Happy Friday!
Always wonderful to see the progress of Tatkine!
I learn along with y’all, more and more with every episode. A perfect example, that I have no doubt I’ll be trying in the future, is the interesting placement of a cell phone within the drip zone of a full can of primer whilst pouring. I could literally hear Ifka politely saying, “you might want to move your cellphone”😂🤣😂🤣
You two brighten this old woodworker, and sailor’s day with every episode, thank you!
    Cheers from Dallas!

I'm really impressed with the progress in both build AND editing. That said, I sort of miss the videos where the camera mount slowly gives way until we are all looking at the floor. You know, similar to the way fiberglass did on this episode. 🙃 Great channel, great project. Hope viewership is sufficiently growing. It will go through the roof when you pour lead, so keep that in mind if you need a boost.

Another superb episode - and what a beautiful place to go fishing! The torture board will help you to discover muscles you never knew you had but the workout will be very worthwhile. It's amazing what a difference a bit of paint makes, and Tarkine will undoubtedly be an absolute stunner when she's finished. Keep up the good work!

Fröhe Weinachten and Happy New Year from Germany. I envy your short sleeves. Pro tip: Buy a cheap spray can of brown primer and sprinkle over surface to be sanded. This will give you a very visible guide to high and low spots during sanding.

happy new year guys, looks like a good work out Matt but mind the old war injury to your shoulder, i think the Mrs is doing better at the torture board - that surface is looking real good, not an easy thing to get right when using fiber glass, but the white guide coat is a real aid, a lot of hard work for sure, but well worth it

Amazing the impact of the rub rail on the whitened hull. Really accentuates the boat shape. Maybe doing smaller fiberglass sections. Say half or two thirds with more hull wetting and top taping. Or full sections with one or two more persons. Torture boarding is no fun. Great that you can change up the routines and muscle groups used. Neck, shoulder, arms, back and legs must be sore.

i might be mistaken but the lighter cloth you showed was woven roven maybe 3oz.
so far ive never worked with twill, which is a type of woven roven but with a specific sequence between the warp and weft which gives it a specific look and making it drape really nicely over compound/complex shapes.
ive worked with 17oz 45/45 biax, and bought a roll of 3oz woven roven because , for some spots i wouldnt need such a strong cloth and i could also save in the resin. turns out that ive laminated it as i normally did for any other time, only to be able to peel it after the resin had cured.
i lost all confidence in the cloth and never used it more, to this day i dont know what hapenned, and im sure it wasnt a problem with the resin or contaminated surfaces because im pretty anal about those instances

got to say it shocked me u left the keel exposed ...... i can see guys sailing along smack a log in that area and delaminated in those area specially how waters flow... i would wrap it in fiber glass from stem to stern

    • @Building_a_Boat_by_the_River
      @Building_a_Boat_by_the_River  12 годин тому

The whole boat will be wrapped in glass, inside and outside. The inside is already done. There are two layers of glass on the hull already in this video. The glass also wraps underneath the keel. This cloth we did in this video is a layer of twill that goes over the heavy cloth. It's to minimise print though.

Looking good! Have you considered using a wider roller when applying paint to such a large area, you could save alot of time and effort. A guide coat to show low spots when sanding will also aid you when sanding the hull, as they use in auto painting. Just a thought.
