I had the privilege of getting to know Mr Papaleo in my early teens from him being a customer on my paper route. A amazing man. He took the time to talk me on occasion. I once remember telling him that I had a chance to get into boxing in a YMCA program I went to in Hartford. I still remember his reply. "Save your pretty face". I did. And he was a good tipper.

I got to serve him a few times back in the 80's when I was a waiter there. Also, my father was a golden glove boxer in Hartford in the 50's and Willie used to come around the gym and give pointers. Of course they will you dunce, it’s a much younger sport so obviously it will take time. They all ready have their own legends. I love both sports, there’s no denying mma is more exciting but boxing is great aswell. One thing guys like you don’t understand is that mma is far more technical than boxing. There’s so many more variables and things to worry about and the grappling is way more technical than any striking art. So don’t be so quick to look down your nose. Mma will replace boxing as the main combat sport, mostly just because people are more and more desensitised and seek more and more exhilarating stimulation, but also because mma and particularly the ufc constantly have the best fighting the best and spoiling the fans...which sadly doesn’t happen in boxing much anymore

Yunno, it's funny, I heard that Willie was afflicted by Dementia Pugilistica later in his life, but he sounds pretty clear here. A great fighter, and the best technical boxers I have ever seen. Most guys would be glad to have his post-crash footwork!

Very few boxers today would have made it back in the 50's; some Champions today would not even be contenders in the 50's I think. Willie Pep would be great today but with all the promoting time needed, he'd probably would win 80 or 100 fights today.
