My favorite punk band ever
I grew up with these young laddies in Philly . I've know Kenny and back in the day we called him Ale. Not many know that
unless you're from the neighborhood. I've know Michael on drums since kindergarten and as well as Chip . He was a catholic school boy..
Yes they were ahead of the curve. First time in my life to smoke weed was with Stinker and Lenny we must have been around 15 years old at the time. Bryant elementary , Sayre junior high , and West Philly high. Yes memories.
Tis I
You just painted a picture and it's great 👍
Philly Shreds baby! These guys started it all, 1975 man, that’s technically “proto-punk” it was a real treat to see this band live, they made the history as well. A Philly treasure.
REAL punk rock.
Exacto friend saludos
@@D.A.N.2007PunkMost definitely! Legends.
Pure Hell should be on the Philly Walk Of Fame and maybe even Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. They weren’t just a punk band….They infused heavy thick blues riffs with high energy rock and roll. They are definitely one of Philly’s GOATs bands and deserve to be recognized and remembered for their musical talents. When I first heard this band in 2013, I had to have a dental surgeon reattach my jaw to my mouth I was in awe at how such a young band in the early 70’s had such an amazing sound and performance. From that moment on in 2013 and after dozens of musicians, finally in 2022 I found two guys whose eyes popped out when I played NOISE ADDICTION for them that we all agreed we MUST pay tribute to them and cover two of their songs. We would like to maybe do a tribute show to them someday but that could take a lot of time and energy. But for now, I’m more than satisfied with our cover of NOISE ADDICTION. Here’s a clip of our cover I hope you enjoy… and our band name is a nod of respect to the late drummer of Pure Hell, Michael Saunders aka Spider. R I P Spider 🙏✌️❤️✊🎶🤘🎸🎸🥁🎤💥

LAME BRAIN! Love it! These guys are SO under-appreciated, my goodness. Excellent post. This too straightened out some myths and rumors. Cheers!
All-Black 'proto-punk' band 'Death' (fr. Detroit) preceded them by half a year (renamed, re-genred) in 1974 but, like proto-punks 'Simply Saucer' in Canada*, were isolated & lesser known than the more hardcore 'Pure Hell' from Philadelphia (many links below) who were in the NYC 'scene', becoming pals with the New York Dolls and playing with Sid Vicious in 1978 NYC. Musician Curtis Knight, former Hendrix collaborator/discoverer (c.1965-67), became their manager and also produced one of the two sessions the band made, the last session in late-1978 London was recorded by The Rolling Stones' favorite 'UK early-1970s underground-rock band' 'The Groundhogs' 'a guitarist's guitarist' Tony McPhee (a veteran blues-guitarist since 1963, genius forgotten underratedly-influential best [& unique/genre-unspecific] blues-proto-punk band circa 1970-1974). This session turned out to be the last hurrah for Pure Hell as after a second European tour in 1979 Knight fell out badly with them and refused to release their LP. A messy legal conflict resulted in Knight flying back to the US alone, with the band’s master tapes in tow. Pure Hell remained in Europe without any of the rights, or access, to their recordings, which Kathy Knight salvaged after her husband attempted to destroy them. Even the well-received UK tour and an appearance alongside the ascendant 'U.K. Subs' at the Lyceum couldn't stop them splitting on their return stateside.
* Simply Saucer (all Canadian white fucks, see link below, a genius ahead of it's time meld-soundish of Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, MC5, Hawkwind, and the Stooges) were in my top 15 favorite near-unknown-at-the-time 'proto-punk' bands of the 1973-1975 era, along with the UK bands 'Hollywood Brats', 'Jet', 'The Plod', and 'The Stranglers', and Australian bands 'The Saints' and 'Radio Birdman' and others (not counting bands that were in-part or near proto-punk or had major influences on 'proto-punk' and 'punk' bands).

'The Dogs' were another ahead of it's time near-unknown-at-the-time even earlier-founded loud-thrashing Detroit proto-punk trio band of 1968+ (with a very-rare-at-the-time female bass player) that played gig's with bands like MC5, The Stooges and later Death, they recorded a brilliant live set at San Francisco's Mabuhay Gardens on January 1st 1977 (the first rock concert I had ever been to since I saw a Danish garage-band at a hotel in Copenhagen in 1966 age 4):

For proto-proto-proto-proto-punk US band music check out Link Wray (half Native American and escaped being lynched by the KKK as a kid) & The Raymen circa 1963-1966 (their first record and biggest instrumental hit 'Rumble' in 1958 was banned from radio airplay in the US, authorities fearing it would cause and was promoting youth-gang violence, though relatively tame compared to some of their later stuff, it was revolutionary in 1958 and was a huge influence on guitarists including teenagers Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, Jeff Beck, Hank Marvin, Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend, Mick Green, Syd Barrett, and 10 year olds Ron Asheton & Wayne Kramer...∞), video includes footage of them live on US TV in 1959:

Some consider the UK hardcore-r'n'b' band 'Downliners Sect' (formed 1962, a.k.a. 'The Sect') THEE 1st proto-proto-proto-punk band in the UK and were arguably the loudest in 1963-1964, they along with The Pirates (UK, trio) of pre-Beatles UK fame were re-discovered and lauded in 1976 by the UK punk scenariots, resulting in a 'punk-charting' re-release of the Sects original 1964 LP and a Pirates UK+Europe-wide tour and LP in 1977. After being lauded by proto-punks/punks alike in 1976 for their re-released 1964 debut LP, The Downliners Sect, always having satirical sharp humor as a major part of their act and some of their 1960s recordings (in the tradition of slightly earlier contemporaries 'Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages', and exemplified by the Sect's 1965 EP 'The Sect Sings Sick Songs'), re-formed and recorded a satirical derivative 'punk' LP titled 'Punk Rock' in 1977 under the name 'F.U.2.' (" 'Eff' You Too"**) which was a lark for them and partly a send-up of the 'inevitable punk scene pretentiousness of the time' but most punk fans and musicians didn't get the joke and took it as an insulting slamming of 'punk' and so the band's 'punk era' comeback was a cut-short flop in the UK (it didn't help that F.U.2.'s LP was deliberately bad & condemned by the mainstream and underground music industry alike - it wouldn't be the first time the Sect's fortunes took a fall off a cliff, their 2nd [partially-humorous] LP in 1965 is considered the first ever labelled 'country rock' album, titled 'The Country Sect', and they lost most of their fans overnight):

** I just got tagged by UA-cam for using the 'eff' word, so I had to self-censure.
This is officially the longest comment I’ve ever seen on YT.
Yes, but it’s an important one, especially to any veteran of the Philadelphia punk rock scene. Excellent info. It dispels a lot of rumors for me, thanks matey!
They broke the "Ass Kicked" counting machine!
It's very rare for a band to immediately go to "one of my favorites, ever" status in any genre, but they've done it.
The young people growing up in the late 70s and 80s know who cool dudes are. Punk from Philadelphia.
dude ive been waiting fucking years for this full set
I'm not sure, but Pure Hell should be considered like the first metal punk group, some of these riffs are heavier than what other punk bands did on 77/78.
Idk, they really bring into mind acts like Dead Boys, Eddie Criss Group, and Johnny Thunders. Not to mention Death( the proto punk band).
Sure they're harder than a lot of the stuff coming out of the seventies, but I think American punk was already trending in that direction, y'know? In a few years, punks get dominated by Black Flag and Germs and stuff like that. They were really good and really harsh, but I think the only thing particularly unusual about their sound is hiw tight they are
Motörhead???
Also, I'm hearing some fairly impressive lead guitar work, which was not common in punk at that point.
@@psychedelicspiderproductio201I noticed the same. This was not as common in punk at the time. Some bands did it but many, like the Ramones, focused more on the rhythm guitar than lead. I also see some Jimi Hendrix guitar techniques (playing behind the head). Awesome! I'm releasing a video about them today. Bands like these should not be forgotten.
Oh. My. Gawd... I bought the "These Boots" single in 1978 and was absolutely flattened by it, but then there was nothing. No internet in those days; I kept hoping they would tour and come to my town, but none of the magazines or fanzines mentioned them beyond some enthusiastic reviews of the single. Wow. What a great band!!!
This band should have been huge.
These guy were robbed of their legacy
Looks like this was recorded live on a sound stage. Comical canned applause between songs but that does not change what a kick a** performance this is!
Holy Moly. This is awesome. Fast, love the guitar. I’m 60, considered myself in the know about “Punk”, Ramones for life fan but how on Earth had I not heard of this band. Tight as
52 here. Just listened to the album and was really blown away. Played it for my son, who's 22, w/out telling him who it was he said, "Black Flag?" I said, "No, black dudes!" He liked them too.
Más punks, por favor.
Para esta sociedad aburrida y vulgar.
En 1978 tenía 8 años y sigo siendo punk, aborrezco este 2023
Likewise. The left has ruined society.
Punk rock before the bad brains. These guys are awesome.
It's incredible I had never heard of them despite I'm a big fan of punk rock. The guitar is just one of the best... What is clear is they saw the Dead Boys or the Dead Boys saw them 😄.
These guys jammed with SID VICIOUS....Im not worthy!!!
They were the support band at Sid`s final solo gig at Max`s Kansas City club in New York....1978 I believe,
correction: Sid Vicious was not worthy
Sid was worthy all the punks from that era were@flyingvipers
I don’t know how these guys got past me but this is absolutely brilliant!!!
Seriously
They got past everybody.
Possibly the first hardcore punk band
this is so kick ass! the band is so tight and the guitarist is fantastic.
Finally THE GODS SHOW THEIR PROOF YET AGAIN PRAISE TO THE MOST HIGH
lol noobs attaching to cultures and rewriting them

As informações sobre essa banda no meu país são tão escassas que chega a ser triste não saber sobre a história desses caras. Me enche de orgulho ver homens negros tocando numa banda, fugindo daquele estereótipo de rap, rnb e hip-hop
Dame Homies y'all rucked sh8t the f up! Well done boys you literally bring the PURE HELL!!
ThX ManIc MediA !!! Pure Hell est un groupe dément , merci pour ces images !

Best thing EVER!! UNKNOWN
Outstanding
Awesome group
Finally got tobsee the whole performance
Important artifact
Is brutal band...💪🏽🔥
Kinda makes you think Bad Brains listened to these guys, even its not like that. soundwise the legacy is kinda present in a way
They got screwed by Curtis Knight.
Huh ? Whoa.
Wait a second wasn't the all black punk band Death formed in 1971 in Detroit, Mi.? I'm under the impression they were around way before.
I think Death 💀 were the first followed by Pure Hell and Bad 🧠. Jesus 71 seems so early real prototype stuff
Death aren't really a punk band. More like hard rock/proto punk at best. I love Death...I first heard them in 2003 when keep on knocking from their only record from 76 was put on the no one left to blame compilation (tons of other classic unknown bands on that comp too)wayyy before they released the collection of there stuff recorded in 76 in 2008 and everyone started with all the revisionism. They are a great band and Keep on Knocking is one of my favorite proto punk tracks but really Death doesn't sound any more punk then The Stooges do. I get it's cool they were a black proto punk band but people really exaggerate stuff about them(I've heard people say they are the most influential punk band of all time even though almost no one knew about them...they started getting known a bit more when the no one left to blame comp came out but nothing like when the collection of their 76 recordings came out in 2008) great band either way.
1 2 3 4!!!
oh my fukkin gawddddddddd!!!! im seeing where Kiss stole their look ! This is Gold my Black People
You noobs really need to get a clue about other people's cultures
Oh wow and you styled like how we grew up
If you wanna join a culture ATLEAST GET TO KNOW THE BASICS
Well Chuck Berry was who got the ball rollin.
Lol kiss was around since like 72. If anything dudes could be influenced by kiss not the other way around. KISS first album is classic glam rock from 72 Deuce and strutter actually sound similar to this. Pure hell is a classic band though
Perhaps the first hardcore punk album
Gawd these Hot Topic Avatars
Pure Hell are the Truth
If someone could let me know the setlist id be forever grateful 🤟
Spoiled sport goes so hard🤟
😍
11:45
Is this the full set?
I think so
9:50
Lendarios, injustiçados do punk, poderiam chegar ao topo com sex pistols e os ramones...
How have i never heard of these guys?
Because you're not a punk.
Never got their due. Death didn’t either. At least bad 🧠 got sum
lyrics for Wild One would be rad if anyone has 'em...
type shit
Was pure hell the first or was death from detroit? Both all black and at the same time
Death started performing before Pure Hell. Pure Hell feels more like the punk of the 80s while Death has a big 70s sound, reminds me a lot of MC5
@@greglamotte2536 ditto
Death is more proto punk, but yes, they were way earlier.
Death was proto-punk.
Check out Pourhabit people
Take that bad brains!
LoL.
take that ramones. bad brains autenticos verdaderos
all one culture
why are you noobs trying to reverse our cultures
really fucking annoying
why point your animosity towards another good band? take a step back and reevaluate yourself
