The identity of Melchizedek has been a subject of debate and interpretation in both religious and scholarly circles. In the Bible, Melchizedek is mentioned in the Book of Genesis and the Letter to the Hebrews in the New Testament.
In Genesis 14:18-20, Melchizedek appears as a king of Salem (ancient Jerusalem) and a priest of God Most High. He blesses Abraham after Abraham's victory in battle and receives a tithe from him. In the Letter to the Hebrews, Melchizedek is depicted as a type or foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, particularly in terms of his priesthood. Hebrews 7 discusses Melchizedek's priesthood as superior to the Levitical priesthood and connects it to Jesus Christ's priesthood.
Some interpretations suggest that Melchizedek was a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ, while others view him as a historical figure who foreshadowed Christ's priesthood.
